"Hi~  I'll have just a menu and a glass of water please"

Yo!  Ray, you bet I'm having fun.. tons.. Would care sit aspell and hear a bit?  You two Barry and Joe~~~ Cuz I still have alot to say.. but having fun.. sure, my wife gets involved and she has alot to say.  She's sayin I could cut .. but mostly add to the curves.. since the elevation has already been established... she says I could easily make the hidden areas more accessable from the front by adding to the curves.. making them wider in some areas and install bridges that open that particular area.. even by adding some cliffs to accomadate.  Sounds confusing I know, .. shes very adamant about it.  She claims that by not having the third main.. there's plenty of room.  Having fun?  Yeaaah~  I even have picks to show and tell,.. but dont' get me started unless you're stayin a bit.  And other topics such as perspectives.. and the total line up of houses.. arranging them in a fashion of largest to smallest.. and from foreground to background to give a better 'depth' perceptive of the layout.  Even has considered doing that witht the trees.. and have bought HO N and even Z scale trees to help in the overall depth perception.. .. including the cars.. maybe have the large..(only N Scale) vehicles such as trucks closer.. and the small VW bug.. farther away.  So hey.. if you want to sit a spell.. I just love talking trains.  But don't get me talking.. once I start.. I can't stop!  You ever stop to think .. with this long layout.. I could have a 'operator'  for the for each line up.. one for each line and one for each line back down the mountain. Even have separate operators for the trainyards.  "Ah yes the family that runs trains together stays together"

Barry:  Well, after much consideration.. I am planning on using.. for this particular theme.. having the wooden ribs for ridges..  plain old window screen.  I do not want to use cardboard or newspaper.. for the obvious reasons to me.. MOLD~  ew~  The wads of paper.. I really don't think I could get that kind of height.  The wads of paper idea could come in handy when doing small jobs.. lets say around the tunnels..  or a cliff area.  But all in all I'll stay away from the mold part as much as I can.  Also, weight is a major factor to consider.  I really have enough work ahead of me re-enforcing everything.. including especially wooden ridges that will carry the general load of that given area.  I'm planning on using less plaster strips.. hopefully because of the inherent strength of the window screen.  Also in reading in this forum, someone suggested using.. slightly wet paper .. to lay temporarily to see the mountain.. to get some idea.  Then I read someone uses window screen to lay plaster strips over... and found it to satisfactory.  When I read that.. I was amazed about using the screen.  Why?  Well.. being that I like to see things ahead of time.. anyone can easily just place screen over some proposed mountain area.. and get the feel of it all.. before you even lay plaster strips.  I hope that all makes sense.. I'm not even going back to read it.. or check the spelling.

Coffee and a slice of cheesecake please!

Been gone too long!  I see there are a some new folks around.  If I get a chance I'll try and catch up on a few pages.  I did read about Jeff.  Glad you're doing okay.

Back at school working on a research paper.  Between work, school, and EMT time doesn't exist again.  Ceasar (cat) is keeping an eye, and body, on the layout.  I need to get up there and do some work before I go crazy.  Now that the temps are comfortable maybe I can do that.

Sheesh! 10:30 already!  Well, time for sleep.  Paramedic Assist class 9-2 tomorrow.  Great way to spend a Sunday.......

I'll try and stay in touch. Eric

Sawyer, yeah, makeup stuff really does suck. I never seems to go away either...

Eh, it goes away for me; just means I have to stay after school for several days.

Evening, once again. Chloe, another RBF, pleasenthanks?

Keith, we don't mind if you have a lot to say, we're a talky bunch! Seems like you got a lot goin with that layout of yours, too!
Eric, glad to hear from you again! Hopefully time will exist again for you and you'll be able to stop in more often.
Sawyer, sometimes, if your grades are fine, your teachers will just let you slide out of the makeup work, depending on the volume. If it's only a little bit, and it won't make a difference in your final grade, they pretend you never missed anything.

Well, on another forum ,there's discussion of models of NJT's Arrow IIIs. I had decided that because the only models of Arrows represented the old cars (pre-rebuild), that it would not be worth electrifying the line, and service would be just diesels. But the current discussion is about a possible release of a mod kit to make the models represent the new, current cars. So now I'm contemplating this. It would allow me to use Arrows for Hoboken service, and maybe even ALPs (44s and 46s) for MidTOWN Direct service into New York Penn.
And I could even have some fun with this and add an electric motor to Tri-State's roster. Maybe they could buy an old AEM-7 from Amtrak and put it in freight service. Doesn't mean I couldn't still use diesel locos; they could be used if the electric motor dies, or needs to go for it's 92 day inspection.
Hmmm, decisions, decisions....

Enough blabbing, I'll be hangin at the RC for a while.

Paramedic Assist class 9-2 tomorrow.  Great way to spend a Sunday.......

Hey Eric, best "assist" is to ensure the patient has A, B, and C intact or being maintained when the ParaGod swoops in to save the day. Smile,Wink, & Grin Seriously though, good, solid BLS skills do more for the patient in general than the "paramagic" ALS stuff. But, that said, it's good to have Basics who can lend a knowledgeble, competent helping hand when the stuff is hitting the fan. But yeah, not the most enjoyable way to spend a Sunday... So, from a former EMT/Paramedic, let me say "thanks for what you're doing." Thumbs Up

Good evenin', Keith's suggestion of fries and a Coke sounds pretty good...Dinner

Some fool sent the Wife and I a little bit of cash, presumably for our anniversery. She had already budgeted a meal out, which we are partaking of tomorrow. This extra bit of cash, is going to be divided and spent completely irresponsibly. We're going to Toys R Us, so she can (hopefully) find some more die-cast VW BUGs for her collection. Then, we're going to Menard's  where I'm gonna grab some "L" brackets, maybe even some 1x4s for the future RR.

As the brothers of the Masonic Lodge say: "So Mote it Be!"

Uh, anybody have any advice on how to find studs, which may not necessarily be on exact centers (100 year old house), and are hidden behind plaster and lathe??? I don't recall if it was Barry, or Ray, or somebody in here who said they knew a guy in a similar sitchamacation. I'm thinking of drilling very small holes where they "should" be. When I 'miss' I can easily spackle it over. When I hit, it'll be covered by the bracket. That's about the only thing I can come up with. If anybody has a better idea...please don't keep it to yourself!

JIM: Another capital idea...selling prints. THAT editor beatcha to it. There is a link on the website (www.northlibertyleader.com) for people to look at, and purchase pics. She eventually puts not only what we ran, but also the left-overs. I've got a Flickr account (Christopher D. Umscheid), I think there's a way for people to buy a print...but don't know how that works. I know I haven't seen a dime from it. I'm almost to one year of service with this bunch. Hopefully, that'll spur a salary change. Oh, and I guess technically, anything I shoot for the paper, on the paper's dime...is technically the paper's. But, I do freely post what I've shot on Flickr...when I get around to updating it. That's my online portfolio.

Hey Keith, pass the ketchup and salt 'eh? Thanks Pal...

Hello everybody ...

I'll have an RBF please. (Newcomers, that is a root beer float.)

Canadians .... I hear you have your Thanksgiving on first Monday of October. Any truth to that rumor? I hope it is a good one, eh! I heard from somebody in Halifax and they are celebrating at their house tomorrow. In Halifax, they have "Pumkin People" which is a lot of fun. Perhaps, Der John will join us and tell about it although he is east of there in Nova Scotia.

Our little local community is having its annual Ham Festival this weekend. I'm sending a reefer of country hams to the Diner, and they should be there for breakfast.

Jeff .... It's really good having you with us again. I'm glad this hospital visit was really brief, and hope your next appointment goes well.

Ulrich  .... That German electric locomotive looks like a great one. I recall seeing some similar locomotives in Germany, but not in the green color. I may have seen another type.

Jim CG .... You rascal! You went to Chuck's with no advance notice. I don't know what to think.

Is Duke sleeping in the corner both again? He must have worn himself out going to NC. Perhaps if I poke fun at his favorite prototype, the PM Berkshire, he will wake up and tell us about the steam meet in NC. ... Nope... On second thought, I think he is really conked out, and .... he is full of zzzzzz's.

 Yaaaawn - good morning folks,

It is just 6.15 am over here as I start to write this - way too early for decent folks to get up on a Sunday morning!

Zoe, I´ll take my coffee IV and some buttered toast with jam, thank you. What? Yes, your are right, there is a slight smell of garlic around me. Our neighbors invited Petra and me out for dinner yesterday. The  three couples of us went to our favorite Greek restaurant ... Dinner

Petra and I have started to make lists of the stuff we can take along into our new habitat - we have just too much gear. We will try to sell some of it to help offset the debt. The house will then be up for foreclosure sale - Sad

Losing all for what I have worked for over 30 years is a big burden on my poor soul, but being blacklisted for the rest of our lives is even worse - Sad

Robby P. - I really had to look twice to see what is the model and what is the real thing - just fantastic!

Sue - Mr.B´s subway is really something, I have watched his video a number of times. I guess you need to be a little "shady" to build a subway - I´d rather go for this:

Garry - Deutsche Bahn has changed their color scheme a number of times in recent years - an easy task when the tax payer is picking up the bill. Until the late 1970´s all passenger electrics were blue and the freight ones were green. Locos for special service like the TEE trains were red-and-cream colored. Now all locos are basically red with some white striping in front. It could very well be that you have seen the loco in this livery. The model is a new generation Marklin edition with an MRSP of about $ 400 - Sad I can save about $ 5 a month, so that will be over 6 1/2 years before I can buy it - SadSadSad

Jeff - I am so glad you are on the way of recovery - man, I was really worried!

Keith - I don´t know whether the guys have given you the warning about Vinnie - he is the guy with the shotgun and the switchblade. We are very cautious not to upset him or wake him up. I had an argument with him once and the only way to get out of it was to promise him a month´s supply of Petra´s strudel... Big Smile

Sawyer - makeup work is awful! As I was ill quite often in my school days, I still have bad memories on this part of school life. You will survive it, though - so cheer up!

Today´s going to be a wet day - do I say wet? I mean WET! Time to watch my favorite TV show called "Train Romance". It is a show about trains all over the world, very interesting and entertaining Thumbs Up

Y´all have a good day!

Evenin, up late tonight I am. Milk and a few Snickerdoodles please. Thought I'd stop in and see what went on today.

Robby- Those Graffitti things look good to me. Well, you know what I mean. I would be tckled pink if my hand was half that steady.

I'm not into that for two reasons mainly, one- I'll never be able to duplicate them with my so called artistic lack of ability. And two- well let's face it is vandalism. HOWEVER, that being said, and I want to say this quick before the mods shut me down and someone gets upset, it is a fact of prototypicalness (word?) that it exists and that being what it is, if a person wants to model it then it is their choice and I have absoluuuuuutely no problem with that whatsoever. I can appreciate someones efforts at reproducing them on a model. After all, it's their model so it can't be criminal. Right? Anyway lack of graffiti is just my personal preference like the color of my truck. White. The absence of color. How ironic.

Jim- A real light frost that barely even qualified. Just enough to make the wood floor boards slick and the grass just barely. Tonight, or should I say tomorrow, that could be a different story. They are calling for lows of about 28. And yes there is something comical when a dog looses control of 4 legs for a second and the look of sheer terror as it regains it's footing. Like a statue that says " what happened"Laugh Her time is coming, it happens every year.

Ray- You are lucky to be so blessed at the museum! And thank you for carrying on the legend of Stanley. He was a good ole bird. Oh and please, one more favor. Next time please warn us before you tell a story that is a golden opportunity for JR to come back on. (groan) I'm surprised there wasn't a same time post from Garry too.Wink

I'll start on page 5 tomorrow, tired and sleepy.

Good Morning

Well, off to work, I mean committee meetings I mean CHURCH-----that's it!!---

It's the stuff AFTER church that amounts to an all day thing-----Whistling

We got some light frost mostly on the roofs here --- the real frost is supposed to come tonight --at least that is what the weatherguessers are calling for. Our weather now is sunny with a few cloudy periods and increasing clouds tonight---then our Thanksgiving Day wil be dull and 60% chance of showers----which will continue through next week---again. Sigh The high today? 8C.

Todd: That is why I'm so glad that the era I'm modelling was not immersed in graffiti---at least from what I've seen--Whistling

Chloe, I'll have what Ulrich is having please --- I'll be over at the RC for a bit--before I take off for the churchSmile,Wink, & Grin

Mornin'.............Zzz

Huh?  OK!  I'm awake.........Zzz  Yawn!  I have already been over to church this mornng to do the skit advertising the Kabob Lunch next Sunday.   It went very well.  The kid doing the skit with me walked in with about 3 minutes to spare.  I had our associate Pastor ready to fill in if he didn't show.  We got an ovation and loads of laughs and grins from the congregation.  I came back home to get some breakfast.

That reminds me.....  Zoe, I'll have the #2 special this morning, over easy on the eggs, bacon, homefries, and a double order of sourdough toast.  I'll be over at the Rivet Counter for a while.

It is currently 44°F here in the Finger Lakes under partly cloudy skies. We have the same Freeze Warning for tonight that some others have mentioned.  The predicted low is 33°F but they are taking no chances.  The wood stove will get fired up again tonight.  Sure felt good to have a worm house.  This afternoon will be spent bringing in anything that can be hurt by a frost in the garden.  Mostly some peppers.  I will pick all the winter squash as well.

No foot problems thus far so no news is good news. Also the daily fevers have ceased. That's one thing I won't miss. The doc said that would be a good sign that they had gotten all the infected bone out. I'm looking forward to the visit with the foot doc tomorrow and I'm understandably curious about the progress of the healing. I've been doing a lot of TV watching of late so as to stay off my feet as much as possible. This does however take a heavy toll on my computer time and layout work. These are two things I want to get back to as quickly as possible. The computer helps me maintain the link with my friends and the layout work keeps me from going up the wall. One of the prices to be paid for being disabled and unable to work is that the daily schedule seldom changes. Therefore any chance to get out of the house, even a visit to the docs office, is looked upon with favor and an excuse to break the daily schedule.

Good morning.

Hello Duke! I woke you up late at night! Big Smile Thanks for the neat photo!

JimCG metioned buying turnouts. I use Atlas and they do fine. I also have Peco and Shinohara. The switches in my steel mill and in my new yard were used when I purcahsed them. For example, my new freight yard has used Shinahara's. I bought a lot of about 12 on eBay for less than $5.00 per switch. Some needed repair work, but I am using all of them.

Ray ... It must be nice to have a nearby RR museum and to spend time there.... The KY RR museum is roughly half way from here to Cincinnati, and we have met up there with the kids and grandkids who are in Cincy. I recall riding in an old coach about 4 years ago with them as the museum operated a train between New Haven, KY and Boston, KY (Not like cities in the East with such names)..... We passed some old donated, rusty hulks on a siding. Granddaughter (then a 4 year old) said "Grandpa has to fix those trains." .... One of them an old L&N EMD E6 would have been a neat one to fix, and I understand the museum is no doing that. ....The museum has a nice looking C&O Berkshire, but don't tell Duke. Big Smile

Ulrich .... We rode a train between Frankfurt and Hidleburg (round trip) about 15 years ago (or more), and I think it had electrics looking like that type. It had very nice coaches painted blue and white.

Jeff ... Good morning. Glad the foot is improving.

Well, it is time to go warm a pew. Bye.

Good morning, All.  Chloe, I will have a cinnamon roll with my coffee.

Jeff, Glad you are doing  better.  In speaking first hand,  I am glad to not be on the couch all day long sleeping to movies.  I still have not made it back into the layout room, but soon.

Philip,  I would love to see a photo of your progress.

Jim,  Are you picking bushes for trees?  It is the season.

 Hi everyone,

it is a wet afternoon here, so I thought I´d just drop by for some coffee and cake...

Jeffrey - I know what it means to be tied to the house! Though not for health, but for pure economic reasons I try to avoid any unnecessary trip. Cocooning is not really my thing -Sad

Garry - from the late 1970´s until the early 1990´s, Deutsche Bahn had painted all locos and passenger cars in an ocean-blue-cream livery, which looked only good for a moment after leaving the paint shop. This livery acquired a "dirty"look within minutes and all rail fans were finally happy when it disappeared.

A few pics for comparison:

That´s the paint scheme when built.

The ocean-blue and cream version.

... and finally, at the end of service life - looking a little sad already.

Hi Sue - I sensed you like cinnamon rolls - got a recipe to share with Petra? I have this smell of coffee and cinnamon in my nose - Tongue

Sounds good, Ulrich.  Unfortunately, my recipe takes 12 hours to make, so I think about them more than I eat them.

Great photos.  Thanks for sharing.

AmanaMedic - It doesn't always work, but sometimes the easiest way in the long run is to remove the baseboard. Often there is enough gap at the bottom of the plaster wall that you can see the studs themselves. If not, it's a good place to drill some exploratory holes to locate them. Drill a 1" hole and use a stiff wire to find the studs to the left and right.

Well, it's been a busy weekend for the wife and I. We took a couple of days and went to the train show in Timonium on Saturday. Didn't find everything I was hoping to, but managed not to come away empty handed either. I spent more time looking at the operating layouts than shopping probably. I'm telling you, there are some really talented folks in this hobby. And what great ideas one can get for future use in building that dream layout.

Howdy do all. I'll have a cup of coffee please. And some of that ham Garry sent in. What's this? A menu? I didn't even know we had one. Looks like a set of encyclopediasShock. Oh, I see. Next time Keith comes in, tell him the cooks know every recipe. Well almost. (Special items brought in are always welcome). So just order whatever his heart desires. Those things are too much for the girls to lug around.

So, I have a train section runningYeah!!! The new control board works like a champ. I came up to report in on my progress, and catch up on what's been going on before I get too far behind again, when I was hit full force with a Honey DoGrumpy. Luckily it only involved putting the storm glass in the screen door, so that didn't take long and now I'm back in train mode again. So far, great day. Don't know if it will last into the evening because they may call me in to the restaurant if they get busy. I hope not but when progress is being made in Toddland, (of which I'm king) something always happensSigh.

Well, gotta get working on another board for the Gold Creek section. That will be requiring 2 control boards. Not so much for the amount, but more for the arrangement. There are actually two sections and I decided instead of putting 2 on one board I would make two boards.

Have a Great Day!!! er, Afternoon!!

Good afternoon, Flo - I think I will take up Keith's idea and have some fries, but make mine with cheese on top, and with a RBF, please. You know what? Also have the cook fix me a ham and cheese sandwich, since you have Garry's Kentucky ham shipment in. Thanks!

Hey, uh, Garry - I think Nova Scotia (last time I looked) is still part of Canada... Whistling Oh, you meant tell us about Canadian Thanksgiving, not just the "Pumkin People"...Wink

Heartland Division CB&Q
Jim CG .... You rascal! You went to Chuck's with no advance notice. I don't know what to think.

I was thinking (when I had the spur-of-the-moment idea) that I should call you and Mike(Inch), but I don't think I have phone numbers for you guys. Email 'em to me, and next time I get a wild hair of an idea, I'll call you (I promise it won't be in the middle of the night, though!).

I see by that Berkshire idling on the next track over, that somebody must've woke up Duke last night, eh? Nice photo, Duke! Guess you can post pics at about midnight, when you get as many Zzz as he does. Wink

For Todd, Robby or those wanting prototypicalness on their modern RR's, I should mention that there are companies in Walthers' catalog who make decals of a variety of graffitti, so your hand need only be steady enough to get the decal onto the side of the car and let it go in position... But I'm not in that particular prototypicalness group, so how would I know?...Smile,Wink, & Grin Oh yeah, and with decals, if you're careful, you can take the graffitti off later when you come to your senses if you change your mind...OopsWhistling

Todd, good to hear that Missy isn't totally flawless. Maybe Garry missed posting on what you said because he was Zzz On those encyclopedias menus, how do you think Vinnie stays in shape?

Sawyer, good luck getting your school things all caught up by Friday (and done well)!Yeah!!

Looks like our eastern Diners are in the frost territory for tonight. I don't think we're supposed to get much cooler than the 40's (F) again here, though.

Jeff, good to hear about your fever going away, and best wishes on your doctor's visit in the morning. Thumbs Up

Sue - I saw the article in MR's current issue (and recalled your and DerJohn's talk about doing the 'shrub thing', but for one, I know about nothing about which bushes/plants I would get (I'd probably forget a half hour after I saw a photo, even), and two, I don't think we have any such bushes near our apartment building. Besides, I'd likely bring in bugs with them that'd infest my apartment... So, I use the artificial kind. Well, except for some dried plant thing I got at Michael's a few years back (when I was in Memphis visiting my friend Linda). Those will become some kind of aspens, if I recall the directions correctly (I know I have that article around here somewhere... Wink I do admire what you and DerJohn and others can do with the 'shruberry though.

Ulrich, you might ask Chef Ryan if he has a cinnamon roll recipe; I bet he has at least one (or a dozen...). Chef

Ah, Flip - you got about the reponse from your report on your temps as I did on Friday at w**k. See, I have this widget on my computer for the weather, and I have a setting on it that lets me switch to see what Key West's weather is like. I think on Friday - when it was about 50 something and sprinkling, it was 90 F (heat index of 104 F) in Key West. Oops Didn't impress them too much, either...

After church today, when I was putzing around in my apartment, I hear a woman screaming and some thuds (sounded like the next door apartment), and a woman's voice asking/telling someone to give her her phone. Next door neighbor has at varying times since he's been there, had different cars (which I think might be girlfriends he's connived into moving in and taking care of the cleaning, and possibly the one or two kids he may have partial custody of). I'm wondering if the gal's in serious danger, so I called the police and told them what I was hearing and requested they send someone to check. A bit later, I heard a knock on next-door's door, but the voices weren't loud enough to tell for sure what was said. But after the police had left (there were 2 cars out front, I noticed), or while they were still out front, I heard the door open and shut and saw a woman going out to a car in our lot and driving off. Hope she is out of that situation for (her own) good. Now, so long as the neighbor doesn't decide it was me that reported it, and try to take revenge on me/my car. I don't especially trust him much. More than enough said on that.

Todd was talking about his progress on the layout; I was able to get 95 percent of my mainline down and nailed. Kept having those little tacks bend on me, so in some spots I just pushed/tapped them in 1/2 or 2/3rds of the way, and I'll go back later (maybe tonight) with a nail set and take it down the rest of the way. But here's the mainline for now, with the changed turnout closest to you:

Yeah, it's not completely straight on that mainline, so I guess I'll sit at the RC for now and look through that Walthers catalog a bit more. Dinner

Prayers for doctors' visits, healing, comfort, and a productive MRR'ing weekend.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

 Thanks Jim!

Well, posted these in WPF, but I'll post them in here too. Finally got the homemade terminal strips wired up. Yes, I know they look like crap, but hey, it works, lol. I'll insulate them with electrical tape after i've got all the feeders wired up.
