Afternoon......  Ooooooo!  is that fresh baked pie????

Ah, Chloe, I'll have a biiiiggggg slice of the pie and a Dr. Pepper (specially since I apear to be buying this round...).  I'll go over and sit at the Rivet Counter.

Sawyer, I bet you can hold your own with the best in the league. Thumbs Up

So Jeffrey, what did you decide to do this afternoon?

As for me, I took a bunch more photos of the layout.  This round is starting the close up shots.  here are a couple teasers:

The abandoned tunnel.  The story is that some time ago the old bore had a roof cave in so they decided to make a new bore near it.

This is a shot that has never been done on the layout before showing the stream and bridge at the waterfall near the yard lead.

Enjoy!

Man that IS good pie, Thanks, Ryan! (Barry, leave all weapons at the door........)

So Jeffrey, what did you decide to do this afternoon?

Watch some old 'Mission: Impossible' shows from the 60's, season 1, before Peter Graves and Leonard Nimoy joined it.

Evening all, just stopping in for a RBF and a little relaxation before probably going to start dinner (my turn for the night, so left-overs will be brought in afterwards).  Got a bunch of paperwork finished up with Advance so I can start with them.  Just waiting on my MVR and drug test to come back so I can start.  Guess the way I can look at it is at least my foot is in the door and I can move up from part time to full time when a position comes open.  Its a job, and afterall.  SOMEthing is better than NOthing.

I've also been working on getting my track plan color coded so it can be read easily, I might be able to get a picture of it and get it on here this evening if all goes well.  Only down side is that I can't really ID some of the industries that the subdivision map is showing on an aerial shot, so I'm "guessing" as to where they really are in relation to certain towns, roads, etc.

Well, Amy and Heather are home, so I'd best see what dinner is going to be (something with hamburger, just not sure what).

OK, so I've been meaning to get some new pics of the bike, and a few people have proven themselves to real gluttons for punishment, because they actually wanted to see what I looked like.  (Very scarry stuff there!)

So, here's some pics from today.........

Been watching a movie called 'Along came a spider'. Quite interesting. There's some train shots in it, subway mostly.

Good Evening, Chloe, Vinnie. (Hmmm, he's not usually in here at this time. Wonder if something got out of hand earlier today/tonight...Better not ask...) Uh, I'll have a Santa Fe mug of coffee and a hot fudge sundae, please, 'n' thank you! Oh, wait! Do I see some of Petra's streudel? I'll have some of that, too, please!Dinner

Thanks, but I'm not sure I really know what the smeg I'm doing...As long as something ends up looking like what I'm trying to make it look like, based on a prototype photo; I'm reasonably happy. I'm not out to win any awards, I don't sweat the petty stuff (and I don't pet sweaty stuff Dead)I do try to find a prototype pic of something if I'm thinking of buying...if it's close, it's a consideration for expenditure. IF I find it's a 100% foobie...I move along, nothing to see here. With the Penford hopper, I figured a little w**k and I could get it looking close to (but nowhere near exact to) the real thing. It's coming together...it'll be "good enough," and it'll look like the ones in the photos...minus one bay

Hey, Chris - that's why I like 'protolancing' - all I have to do is claim that somewhere, somehow out there, there is (or used to be) something vaguely resembling whatever I have sitting on my layout. Whistling And nope, I don't mind longer answers; come to think of it, I might, just might have given one or two of them in my posts (sometime, somewhere, somehow...).Smile,Wink, & Grin

Let's see - what was the saying? Thousands of comedians out of work, and what do we have in here?....Laugh

And Jeff, I think you have that one (about the watching a wee bit too much...) pegged right on the mark. Wink

jeffrey-wimberly
I got two more covered hoppers converted to shelf couplers this morning then had a lunch of sausage and rice. Now, what to do for the afternoon.

Nap, Jeff?

Vincent, I'd say you get the sleuthing award for the week - great job of finding out which SW that was, cause I was having trouble distiguishing from the aerial/bird's eye views. Way to go! Yeah!!

Ulrich, good to hear from you again (and better that even when you're recuperating those 3 weeks, you can stop by for your (Doctor-approved, of course) meals in the Diner. And I'd agree that the bright side of life is a better place to hang around.Cool

JR - good to hear you're getting close to getting your C.O. for the house. On your 4X8 plans, remember to check what 4X8 plans are in the MR track plans database in here, and if you're not a MR subscriber, email me... I'll pass to others about reliable N scale track, though. Does sound like your team's doing all right. Thumbs Up

So, Barry - what courses did they talk you into teaching at the Univ.? And the important question - will this mean more MRR/LHS funds, hopefully? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Todd - and how long did it take you at the doctor's to get the stitches and all, after your remark (and Brenda hit you)?OopsBlack Eye

nik .n
Just a shiny medal. And being featured in a national magazine.Big Smile

Ah, Nik.n, that sounds like the best part there! Thumbs Up

Eddie/Bama, good to learn your (other?) name. And, we'll look forward to seeing what delights in track design you have for us. Wink (And remember that the layout only slightly resembles whatever track plan you started with, right?) Thumbs Up

PC, your bike looks really nice - not sure if I'd seen the overall photo(s) before. And you clean up pretty good too (did you cut your hair/beard?).

Sarona Terry - Auggghhhh!  "Tasteless... but that's why I love it!"...

Well, w**k was fairly good today - interesting mix of two different clients who showed up for appointments, couple of follow-up clients who arrived a little late (each) for theirs, lunch for my supervisor's birthday (highlights were the cheesey chili (great!) and also juicyburgers (pretty good - now, if I'd have something to mix the two in together, could've been really good!), plus those Frito scoop things. Got done with appointments by 3, but then got a call from a client's girlfriend (for whom I had no confidentiality release), so I couldn't even acknowledge if the client had been here, yet she managed to stay talking most of an hour and a half on the phone, with questions about commitments, how to get the client meds ASAP, what she could do (not a lot, except maybe kick 'em out), etc. Then when I get home and am getting out of my car, two women are standing there and one recognizes me from w**k and wants to ask a question about a homeless person she was helping who needed meds NOW... (not a lot of options, and I'm not fond of being 'on the clock', so to speak, when I'm away from w**k). So I give her basic info and options and dash (okay, I walked...) into the building. GOT to find another place to move to, soon!

But I have my rail cutters and track gauge, so I can get back to the track on the layout Friday evening (after laundry). Smile

Think I'll chill a bit at the RC here. Okay, Eddie, JR - let me see those track plans a minute. Okay, what if you moved this turnout over to...?

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

*comes in bearing a large platter of tacos, burritos, and gorditas*  All right guys, told ya I'd be back w/ left overs!  Come and get it!

Jeff, I've seen "Along Came A Spider", it was a quite interesting movie.

I went out a rode some today, probably going to go out tomorrow and ride some more.  Well, the color-coding is almost complete, just a few more things and I'll be all wrapped up with it and be able to post the picture of the track-plan on here for y'alls critique.

I hear another traing coming, Heather and I went and watched Q650 as she swapped some cars out for the Conecuh Vally RR, and then she happily headed NB.  Train I hear is coming SB, so its probably a grain train, no other "scheduled" trains run until about 11:15pm tonight.

Well, I guess I'm going to yield the floor now and catch up on a few things, and more importantly get the color-coding done.  Remember y'all eat up! -- Eddie

Guess I've been lurking along here for long enough without posting anything so I'll jump in.

Somehow, it's not the least surprising that there seems to be an high incidence of Monty Python fans among the model railroading community.  Absent any obviously commonality between a venerable transportation mode and a wacky British comedy troupe, does correlation imply causation, or is something larger at work?

The other observation is, given the recent warning about forceful symbols, is it risky to say "w**k"?  (as if that was a dirty word).

Evening guys, just stopping in to show off the plan.

Y'all tear it apart if you so desire, and if you can't read it, I do sincerely apologize.  I know its smallish, but its the best I could do considering all facts.  PC, the bike does look good, I've gotta get some pictures up of the one I've got use of.  Well, I think I'm about to hit the shower and get to bed, gotta try to get a little more rest this evening.

 Good Morning, Everyone!

Zoe, some coffee in my LKAB mug and a bagel to go with it, please. I´ll be at the window watching the switcher switch whatever it has to switch, while I wait for the gang to drop in.

Folks, it is a wonderful day! The doc came in yesterday evening and  told me that I could go home, all the values and checks were just fine. I called my wife and she picked me up (or shouldn´t I say it this way?) So I am at home now. Can´t really move around choppin´ trees, but all I feel is a little pain in the chest.

While the doctor´s kept me knocked out, I had this strange dream. The surgery did not go well and there I was, at the gate, requesting permission to enter. St. Peter looked in his book, but did not find my name. You are not in my book, he said, but as you are already here, tell me, what have you made out of the life given to you? I told him that I worked hard, built a house, planted a tree, raised a family, but the focus was on work. St. Peter answered, that this is not what he wanted to know, he wanted to know about my life, my happiness, my sadness. Step aside, he told me, while I think about what to do with you. Next in line was an old man, who told St. Peter, well, I am dead now. I am not sorry for this, because I had a fulfilled life. I enjoyed all the gifts the Lord has given to us - the beautiful girls, the good food, the wine and the sunshine. I had a good life, for which I am grateful. Come on in, answered St. Peter, you are welcome! He turned at me again and said, "This guy has understood life, you - not yet!"  Finally, he concluded, that he cannot let me come in, that I had to go back, to find out what life is about.

I really feel having been given a new chance for my life - to start all anew. Petra and I will do a lot of thinking on how to make best use of this and if you allow, we will share our thoughts with you - to be followed by a supply of Petra´s special Strudel! Chef

Bama - that track plan of yours is looking great - lots operation! Good work!Hope to see pics of it here soon!

PC - GREAT bike! Looks like an Indian, but I am sure, it isn´t , is it? Could not check on the beard, though, as Photobucket would not enlarge the pic. I had a beard until a year ago - just to compensate the lack of hair a little more up north Big Smile. Might start to grow a beard, again...

Philly Bill - being a full blooded model railroader requires a certain dry humor and sarcasm to put up with some of the "challenges" of our hobby. It is this "Has anyone seen the soldering iron - ouch, I found it" - thing. Monty Python, actually my personal favorite, is the epitome of this type of humor, closely followed by a former BBC TV show called "Allo, allo" with my favorite character Herr Flick saying "Ve hav vays of making you talk!"

Jim - I will have a word with Vinnie, Vinnie? - about a constant supply of Strudel - it´ll keep Petra busy and out of mischief!

Ray - that "dead" tunnel looks just great -  a real scenic high light. Reminds me of the Hagermann tunnel on the former Colorado Midland RR.

Barry - you are into teaching now ? Congrats! I always wanted to do that, but unless you are a former politician, like our Mr. (?) Joseph Fischer, aka Joschka Fischer, of the Green Party, who received a call to Boston University, you don´t have much of a chance to share your experience with the younger ones. Fischer made some career - from hurdling rocks at policemen to secretary of state to professor... Whistling

Have a good one!

 Good morning.

It's 70 and mostly clear. The high will be around 84 and thunderstorms will be moving east to northeast.

The coupler conversion went well yesterday. I removed the Kadee #5's from several covered hoppers and prepared to install Kadee #119 shelf couplers in their place. On little problem, only in appearance though. The #119 is a full shelf coupler such as would be found on a tank car and are very rarely seen on hoppers. These cars normally have lower shelf couplers. Easy fix. I simply filed the upper shelf off most of them. I left one car's set of couplers as full shelf. Gotta have something that the eagle-eyed rivet counter down the road can lock onto. It took an average of 10 minutes per coupler to get them all mounted. That being said I have to say this about this type of coupler. The good thing about them is that they really stay together and don't come apart easily until uncoupled but the bad thing about them is that they really stay together and don't come apart easily until uncoupled. There's no lifting one coupler clear of the other with the old 0-5-0 with these babies. An uncoupling magnet, dual-tool, skewer or small screwdriver will suffice to uncouple them. Today I think I'll take some to clear the junk left over from many projects off the layout as I'm tired of seeing it and would much rather see the layout instead. This is one of the hazards of the layout and the work bench being one and the same.

Good Morning All,

50 and cloudy here with a high in the mid 60's but no rain predicted. I'll have a regular in a NYNH&H mug and a blueberry danish please or is it appropriate to have strudel for breakfast?

Ulrich interesting dream on coming back until you get fufilment. For sure making full use of a second chance is a very worthy goal. By all means keep us posted as your journey continues.

Bama - I might have missed it, but what size room are you building in? I assume HO scale as well, no?

Jeff - I like the shelf couplers but had held off getting any (really they are too new for my era) until I could see how they looked on a model. Thanks.

Spent last evening sealing woodwork at the house. We're using semi gloss polyurethane over the stained wood and I think it's coming out nicely. Not too shiney and all the grain shows through to nice effect (gunstock oak stain underneath). We left the chimney brick exposed in the dining room and master bedroom but we masked it and sprayed Rustoleum flat clear over the brick and mortar to seal it. That came out well also and the flat clear is very thin so it might be usable on models as well. I have a bit left so at some point I'll experiment and report back. We still have some trims to do and the backsplash for the kitchen, but most of the interior is done. We also have a small punch list for the outside for the building department (extra lags, etc.) but we did get permission to start moving in. HOORAY!

Welcome Philly - Most of us who hang here have exhibited or developed a somewhat skewed sense of humor but we do eventually even talk about trains. And since we don't curse here it should be no surprise that the four letter word denoting labor is never spelled out (actually in deference to one of our newly minted ROF's who got a bit hinky about it a year or so ago).

Speaking of w..k I need to get after it. Lime Rock nxt weekend and then Thunderbolt in Millville, N.J. the week after and we have lots to do as usual.   Catch ya later,  J.R.

They look just like the pair on this tank car. I was impressed with them right out of the package. Up to that point I'd never seen a #119 or #118 coupler.

They hold together extremely well, don't come uncoupled on grades and they can be easily modified to "E" bottom shelf couplers by cutting off the top shelf. Now do the same thing I told myself to do. Stop kidding yourself and get some. Once you try them you'll like them.Smile

Sir Madog
PC - GREAT bike! Looks like an Indian, but I am sure, it isn´t , is it?

Looks like one, but it's a Kawasaki Drifter.  It's Kawi's tribute to the Indians.  They actually made less of these then they did the real Indians!  Real limited production ya know.

Sir Madog
Could not check on the beard, though, as Photobucket would not enlarge the pic.

Strange.....a couple other folks said they had problems opening the pics too.  Wonder what thats all about?  They worked fine for me, even when I logged out of my photobucket account and viewed them like anyone else.  Hmmmmm............

Sir Madog
I had a beard until a year ago - just to compensate the lack of hair a little more up north Big Smile. Might start to grow a beard, again...

Haven't lost much up there yet.  My father is a bit thin up there, but not too bad, and he's pushin' 70, so maybe I'll be OK!

Good morning. Some of that pie Ryan brought in yesterday and a cup of coffee please.

Jim- I didn't say so, but your request for my assistance in you getting some rest, has and will continue to be filledAngel. But you probably already knew that. Yeah I can imagine about work being brought to you when you're just standing at your door off the clock. But what do you do, you don't want to be mean. Looks like you might need a double whammy dose of peace and quiet prayers. Done.

Bama- Hey Eddie, sorry you didn't get the job you went for, but you got your feet in the door and who knows, many times they'll loose someone and you can pick up more hours. Then after a bit the Managers spot may come open again. Like my Daddy always told me at least you got a paycheck coming in and no one says you can't keep looking while you're working. Ya know, I've kinda got used to knowing you as Bama. If'n you don't mind I think I'll just keep calling you Bama. Kind of a cool nickname anyway. Whoa! I just got to where you said the same foot in the door thing.

Ok I suppose I need to step up to the 20th century. I just found out ( the hard way) that if you hold the shift key down for too long, the keyboard turns off and the dad blamed thing won't type. Now what purpose does that serve other than to ...uh..., upset, those of us who are pooter stoopidDunce. Anyway, that took a while to figure out, but now I'm back. Luckily I noticed a ticking noise every time I pressed a non- functioning key,(which was all) or I probably would have went out and bought another keyboard only to find out that wasn't it.

Garry- Welcome home glad you had a safe trip. Good luck and have a safe trip.

Ray- Great photos! I must say, though there are many, the abandoned tunnel is one of my favorite scenes.

Jeffrey- Love the old Mission Impossible. I had forgotten about the ones without Peter Graves.

Philly Bill- Well, considering that as adults, we take a miniature toy size train. Put it together with some track that we made up in a world that many make up, put up little industries along the way and pretend we are loading, moving things around and unloading. Very much like when as a child we played with Matchbox and Hot Wheel cars in the dirtpile out back making a town. Or with the John Deere tractors that we used to buy at the fair every year (and now regret playing with them after finding out what the old ones are worth....... Nah, I had fun )and farm. I guess we are a childish bunch and some would say silly for investing a large amount of money into something like a Model Railroad. So it stands to reason some would be attracted to one of the most childishly silly adult shows I can think of. We probably think the old Looney Tunes cartoons were the best also for their mix in appeal to children and dialog and inferences that adults found funny also. As to the asterisks, It's never been explained to me but my assumption is, we are here to enjoy a hobby and leisure time not to work so work is a bad word. I myself forget so I might be considered a bit, well potty mouthed. Oh I see J.R. has explained. I guess I was kinda close.

Ulrich- Wonderful to hear you are home. And you can have Petra pick you up anyway you want!Wink WOW! Talk about a dream! Wonderful! I do believe you may have had a Divine visit of sorts. Could be the answer you've been looking for as to why all this is happening to you. Um......, If you have been asking yourself that question lately.Whistling

Barry- You may not have introduced the weapons, but I could have sworn I saw you open the window in the back of the car before you left yesterday.

PC- I like the beard. Makes you look younger. (SLAP!!!) HEY!!  (Zoe gave me an NCIS slap to the back of the head) But it does! Allright, Philip, that didn't come out exactly right. Oh well, you know what I mean.

Have a Great Day!!

Hello everybody......

We're leaving in a few minutes for Nashville. Maybe, I'll be on here this week end.

It was good of Ulrich to share his "dream", and I hope people read it. I will always remember my own experiences last year when my heart stopped and I was "dead". There is no doubt we have something waiting for us when our bodies die.

We still have not resolved our computer issues. I had some good advice from amny of you, and I have spent a lot of time working on them. Hopefully next week I can get back to the problems and fix them.

It would be nice to have time to work on the layout again. I have numerous layput projects needing my time.

Cheers

Philly Bill, welcome to the diner, we try not to use those four letter words in here especially; S@#W and W#@K.  How ever winter is just around the corner here so S#@W might slip once in a while.  Until things dry out down south we will refrain from the word r#$n as well.

Bama, how big is the room.

Yeah, I think it's all the grey in the beard that gives me that youthful glow!

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe just coffee, dark roast in a R&GV Museum mug, oh, and a couple of those chocolate chip cookies you got over there.

Ulrich!  Good to see you again!  Sounds like you are recovering well.  A lot of wisdom in that dream.  Enjoy every day!  A friend of mine (President of the MLK Committee) who is an associate pastor of one of our Black Baptist Churches here in Geneva whenever he is asked how he is replies, "Well blessed!"  He now has me answering that same question with, "Life is good!"  Wink

Philip, nice photos of the wheels!  That beard will look better as it grows in.  See what it does for me:

Covers up all 3 chins.

TMarsh
Ray- Great photos! I must say, though there are many, the abandoned tunnel is one of my favorite scenes.

Thanks Todd!  I kinda like the tunnel area myself.......Whistling  Boarding it up and leaving it saved me considerable work and is probably the best use of the area.  Got the idea from a thread about abandoned ROW here at the forum.

Barry, so what was with the catapult on the trailer attached to your car.....  Oh yeah, innocent, uh huh.  Lucky we finished the pies up before you arrived I'd say. WhistlingWink

Philly Bill, what I have always loved about Monty Python is the little things that are added that refer to scenes you haven't even watched yet.  Like the Witch scene in the Holy Grail.  At the very beginning of the scene the knight is attaching a coconut via a string to the foot of a pigeon.  You have to watch the movie again and again to see all the gags that are in it.  Also the plentiful things going on a the edge of the scenes.  The other movies I love for much the same reason is the Grumpy Old Men movies.......  And yes, the same inane sence of humor seems to permeate the RR hobby.  Oh and Sign - Welcome to the diner!

Well!  Time to get a move on I think.  The Yaris goes in for its 6th. month oil change today, and there is a NRHS Chapter meeting tonight in Rochester.... not to mention I need to visit the grocery story sometime today.

 Good Afternoon,

it´s been a mild and pleasant autumn day with lots of sunshine and a temperature around 20 C. The trees around us show golden and red leaves and you can hear flocks of geese flying south for their winter quarters. I guess we will have a cold winter coming soon.

I have been trying to get hold on my current life, but I have to admit that I am still too weak to do so. Something I cannot explain is still happening to me - I hear things I never could hear before, I see things that I never saw before. I am confused, but not worried about this.

Petra and I have started to talk about our life and how it will change. We both know that the coming weeks will be really tough on both of us, as we have to fold up our "previous" life before we can find and head in a new direction.  She really surprised me - I thought it to be much harder for her to give up what made up her life for almost 20 years.

Folks, please bear with me when I start to get philosophical - I´ll make up with more Strudel and other goodies Petra knows so well to make (like her award winning chocolate chippers, her apple pie, her Linzer Torte - the list is endless, but please don´t let Vinnie know...)

It just feels so good to be back, also with you!

Flo, I´d like to have an RBF and a slice of that butterscotch pie - did I tell you how much I missed my daily
RBF?

PC - Photobucket is now working, so I took a look at you with a beard - keep it!

Philly Bill - a late, but big Sign - Welcome to the Diner! You´ll find the folks in here one of the finest in the world - REAL FRIENDS!

Ray - I like your smile!

Todd did that---he stuck it on my trailer so he could have more space for all those airbrush caps he was importing---Whistling

BTW--Ray: which thread was that about the retired ROW? There also seems to be another one developing about the old garages that now sports all manner of things oldTongue---of course when one goes meandering back roads and stuff----

Got most of the junk left over from the recent projects cleared off the layout now. I knew I was getting close when I found rails under there. Still some more stuff to sort back into boxes.
