Mine would just be Wheeling and Lake Erie gp-9. Fully equipped with DCC and sound. Though for 1000.00 maybe a minature working deisel engine. Justs a thought.

WM Potomac 4-8-4 Was a dream loco for me for years. 800 bucks in brass , unpainted with no DCC. Now remotored, with a new gearbox, DCC installed and paint, and I'm over a grand before adding sound!!!!!
But it's worth every penny![:D][:D][:D][:D]

That is way beyond the limits. But if I could have a locomotive with all my specifications, it would be a 1:87 Santa Fe 2900 class 4-8-4.

She would have 24 wheel pick up, a super-bass filled sound system, an intense amber LED headlight, lit number boards, no traction tires, an ultra powerful 5 pole motor with 2 flywheels, deeply blacked running gear, and the engine itself would come in at 31 ounces! Her dicast boiler and lead weight would make it quite the hauler! [bow]

I would pay 1000 dollars for an HO Scale "Live Diesel" AC6000 with a real little turbocharged diesel engine in it...

It would have to be the GDRM&MCo M1a 2-10-6. It would feature DCC, high quality sound, perfect detailing, all brass so it would weigh 48 ounces, an extremely ultra powerful 5 pole motor with 2 flywheels, 30 wheel pick up and would probably be able to haul as much as its prototype could, at least 350 cars.

I've seen the engine I want at stores or on eBay (a painted and detailed Sacramento Northern GE steeplecab) for around $450 and passed it by. To date the most I've paid for a loco is abut $130, and I'm not that willing to go much higher...although I said that about paying over $100 for a loco last year. We'll see... either I'll break down for the SN loco or the brass "Moraga" observation car one of these months.

On a side note--how many hours would you spend MAKING the exact engine you want--either painting, detailing, kitbashing or scratchbuilding--from less expensive kits/parts/materials?

For me to even remotely consider a $1K loco, there are a lot of things in my life that would have to be taken care of first. But let us assume that I am now debt free, college funds paid up, wife plied with jewels etc.... I am not sure I would justify this on one locomotive. With a K of bills in my sweaty hand to spend on trains, I would switch to DCC, order to BLI E units in the Q scheme, gets lots of details (figures and vehicles) to populate my scenes. etc. It is amazing how quickly $1,000.00 could be consumed by this hobby!![:D]

I certainly would love to see Kato make a few unique models in "N" scale like Big Boy,Challenger,Mallet(s),Allegheny and a few other steamers.Also a DDA-40X,an Alco C-855,GE-U50 and the Veranda(all Kato's) would be nice to own.But a thousand US dollars for any single loco...never...divorce settlements are way too expensive.

As much as I would like certain locomotives, $1,000 IMHO is far above the mark. So much more I can with that type of money. I recently located a shop that stocks Overland brass HO New Haven EP5s for $894. Been wanting one for years. Not going for it.

However, for those of us here that are making good salaries and can afford to budget these locomotives, by all means go for it-----as long as you take care of home and obligations first!!

The kitbashing route would be the way to go for many of us.

Just for fun, I've always wanted the express locomotives from the video game Final Fantasy VII. Those things were works of art, lightyears beyond anything in the real world. Probably the best way to describe it would be a cross between the NYC's original streamline J1 and the LNER Mallard, but with absolutely beautiful engraving and embossing based upon a stylized french imperial style. The loco was finnished in stainless steel and green, with NYC disc dirvers.

I'd go for one of those for only a thousand. I can immagine that building my own would probably cost that or more. I'd probably want BLI to make it, and I'd want it with sound, DCC, in cab camera, and those absolutely over the top gemed lights that Marklin puts on their platinum engines. While I'm at it I'd probably front a couple thousand more for a matching consist of passenger cars.

Mine would be an ULTRA DETAILED (way better than Trix and Rivarossi) HO 4-8-8-4 Big Boy. It would have two can motors, with two flywheels each. It would also have a bright, pierceing headlight, lit number boards, lit markers, a reverse light on the tender, an in-cab light, and a firebox glow. It'd sport a Supreme QSI sound system, with actual sound recordings of a real Big Boy. All 37 wheels would pick up power from the tracks. It'd be able to take 18" curves, have an all dicast boiler and frame, and have a lead weight in the tender. It'd also come with a little plastic figure of me to put in the driver's seat[;)].

There you have it, folks. The ULTIMATE HO locomotive.

well its hard to top the bigboy mentioned above - wowzers- but my two choices (yes i'm listing two) would be:
a quartet of Union Pacific GP40x's
or
a Union Pacific 9000 with sound, DCC, a fully realistic (and yet non harmful) smoking stack, steam releases etc.(all in HO scale) oh and 100 exquisitely detailed PFE reefers for it to pull.

If I had 1k to blow after all the other bills were paid, I would purchase a Pennsy Centepede semi-pemanent coulpled dual diesel....complete with trainphone! At 182 feet long and over 800,000 lbs, that is a BIG baby-faced Monster!!
