 Mornin´ Everyone,

did not sleep well, too many bad thoughts in my head keep me from relaxing. Woke up and found my pillow to be all wet from crying silently - my wife called the Doc in. He says, it´s my nerves. He has given me this little pink pills to make a gray day bright, but I won´t take them - period! I don´t believe in chemical sunshine.

Chloe, just a coffee in my ARR mug, please.

PC - my prayers for your daughter!

John - that idea about Petra´s Strudel Place is haunting me for quite some time now. I know it would be successful! There will be a big market for strudel in USA and Canada. Many times I have been trying to figure out how to just lock up everything here and move to Canada, i.e. Nova Scotia, because that´s my favorite place in the world! But unfortunately, Canadian immigration laws and the lack of necessary funds preclude this - Sigh. So it will remain a life on the dole - a thought unbearable to me.

Mind if I pop in? Well yeah it's a bit late, but I've got cake, PIE, and ice cream from today yesterday, I see, because it's now 12:13... Well anyways, yesterday was my 15th birthday. Nothing train related at all, just money, clothes, oh yeah... AND A BALCONY SEAT FOR THE AUGUST 31ST AC/DC CONCERT AT THE TACOMA DOME! AND YES, I NEED TO SHOUT ABOUT THAT!

Can't wait to see that, should be great. I think with the money I might wander down to guitar center, maybe over labor day for some good sales, and take comparison between an Eppy SG310 or SG400, and maybe take a gander at the Paiste 2002 24" ride. Should be fun.

Anyways, I guess I'll be heading out.

Mark.

 Good morning.

It's 70 and clear. The high today will be around 90 and it'll be partly cloudy.

We got the new belt for the mower late yesterday. Now we'll see if my nephew can be trusted to put it on. I'd like to get my sister's yard finished before Tuesday. After all, there's still my parent's yard to do. On the layout front, I'm still working on some foreground scenes (paper cutouts) to be placed against the background so it looks as if there's going on across the tracks. One scene I'm working on on this side of the tracks involves road work. A disused RR crossing in Sundown has been closed and the road going to it is be removed. A road crew is starting on it with picks, shovels and a jack hammer. Four prisoners have been detailed to help and a state police cruiser is nearby. After the road is taken up the area will be reworked to serve as a freight loading/unloading area on the adjacent spur.

Good morning all,

I’ll return with pictures of yesterday’s project.

Jeff, that sounds painful, I wish you luck with your foot.  Now this isn’t the sore that’s been bothering you for the past year or so is it?

David, it’s nice to see you in the diner again.

Paul, I have some “good” news for you; the Chicago and Cleveland steel mills are firing back up.  Taconite has been moving from Superior down to Erie 26,000 tons at a time.  The old PRR Taconite dock is almost full.

Dick, I hope bill passes you right by and doesn’t make land fall.  Sounds like your ready for some rain and cooler weather after he passes.

Sawyer, experiment with that Krylon clear coat!  You can’t spray it on like its paint; you have to apply several very light coats or you get build up in the corners, or it will start to sag.

Barry, is that Windsor or Sarnia area in your pictures?

Rob, are you using resistors and track power for those LED?

Morgan, when I was in High School (graduated in 1985), the first 2 days of small game season, first 4 days of deer season, and the first day of planting season were excused absences.

Ray, I enjoyed the videos of 211, but it threw me off a little; 211, looked, sounded, and smelled like a RS3, I had to look up RS3 with the twin funnel stacks and learned she was a RS3M.  I see she was a former PENNCENTRAL locomotive back in the 70’s.

Mark, congratulations on the AC/DC concert seats.

Ulrich, I went through a similar period between 2003 and 2006, believe me it’s not fun, but something will come around for you like it did me.  Once I pay off my creditors I can put it all behind me. Keep your chin up and stay focused on the future.

PC, I’m sorry to hear about the accident, thoughts and prayers for your family, I’m glad your daughter was able to walk away from that one.  Best wishes for a speedy recovery to all involved.

John, the hot tar trailer looks great!

Barry, is that Windsor or Sarnia area in your pictures?

That is the Goderich ON area--about an hour and a bit NW of London. If you go from Sarnia you would just go up the L. Huron shore and you'd eventually run into it. This is not the best area for travel in the winter as it is the snowbelt up here---Highway 21 between Goderich and the village of Amberley gets closed a lot between December-March because of snowsqualls right off the lake. Those grain elevators do not get as much use as they did in the past but they still get used---BTW--Goderich is the western terminus for the Goderich and Exeter RR.

Hoppers can be seen --somewhat at the bottom

Last night was rough.  The pain meds just weren't cutting it as they upset her stomach, even with food in her.  She's resting now though, so thats good.

Looks like I'll be driving the cage (our van) most of the week for a while so she can get to school......oh well.

 LUNCH!!!!!!

I've been weathering up a CSX ex. B&O hopper all weekend, and its finally done.  I will post some pictures later.

Barry....I like the shots you have been posting.

PC....My wife was in a pile-up before we moved to PA.  I understand about the pain meds, it kinda seems like they make them to strong now.  Rest is the best thing.

I will pop back in later.

Here are some progress pictures:

The new bench work for the port authority. The gap on the right will be the ship mooring. The bench work on the far left is for the Coal mine.

Here are some rough pictures of the Christmas tree lot.  This is on the property you saw the Farmer’s market.  I need to dress up the curb and find some tree shoppers.  I have a car with a tree tied to the roof to park in front. The last picture is the farmer’s market, as you can see this lot lifts out to change with the seasons.  I’m still working on the Spring-Summer lot.

This is a quick stop.  Sweet tea to go!!

Just sold the "Wheeling & Lake Erie" engine.  I had no use for it since the layout is under construction.  Also here's a couple of shots of the new car.

Its just been a busy weekend.  I will talk to y'all later.

 Hopper looks good Robby.

Personally, I would have kept the engine though, because I'd be running it when the layout is ready to roll. but your choice.

That Krylon Clear Coat works great, almost finished with a hopper, but tired of weathering now, gonna get some more work done on it next weekend.

We just started to harvest our first batch of Sweet Corn---and yes, Ray, they came out wonderfully. The largest ear came out about 14" long and was just YUMMY!!Smile,Wink, & Grin We had a BBQ with some marinated ribs, corn on the cob, and some various veggies from the gardenDinner

Apparently Hurricane Bill is doing a number on the maritimes---hope John et al, are doing OK.

Good evening everybody,

Wow, another location for the Diner again already. I think I'm caught-up on everything (again), wonder how long THAT will last???

Let's see, a tornado, hurricane, car wreck, car stuck on a bridge, more benchwork going up, Santa's got a little hottie helping sell trees, lazy nephew needing a boot to the butt, young gentlemen going back to school, someone's gonna go see AC/DC (sweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeet, I worked a concert of theirs back in the early 90s, Angus ROCKS!), an overheating locomotive, and much, much, much more.

Good grief.

TODD: a little late, but glad you managed to duck the "finger of God," be careful helping with the clean-up.

ROBBY P: more awesome stuff there Sir. How's the arm doing?

LEE: Geesh! Between you, Robby P, the King of Toddland, and everybody else slamming out benchwork; you guys are all gonna give me a complex!!!

ULRICH: GLAD to see you're back in here regularly...the place wasn't the same without ya. Keep the struedel coming, keep your chin up. Better days HAVE to be on their way.

SAWYER: congrats on surviving your first week as a freshman. Around here, college level courses taken in high school count for both: HS credit, AND college. The community college I worked for even had what they called "High School Academys" in programs such as healthcare (Nurse Aide or EMT), automotive technology, and one for engineering. There may have been others, these are just the one's I knew of. Outside of that, other college classes were availible. Good way to get a head-start in the higher/post-HS edumacation. How'd that Krylon stuff work-out for ya? I'm looking for a good alternative to Dullcote.

JEFF: your new backdrops look GREAT! I feel your pain on the "goof-up," I've had too many to keep track of, and that's just this year alone! Heck, I discovered as I was finishing up the weathering on a boxcar; that I had installed a ladder backwards. Dunce Had a heckuva time prying it back off, trashed it out in the process. Fortunately, I had a ready replacement thanks to grabbing a bunch of Front Range ladder sets off of the Bay not long ago.

Been busy at w**k lately, which is good for the paycheck. Had some challenging articles to write...will find out tomorrow if THAT editor likes 'em, or had to play Editor and fix 'em.

Have a good evening, and stay safe everybody...

thanks man.

Like I said, it's working good. I'm kinda tired though, which explains just why I messed up the GP35. Oh well, it works good.

I'm in a rut with my model railroading, lol. Looking forward to getting some track in the mail this week and also for fall soccer. That should get me back up to my usual self. What sucks is I had one of the best week of my life last week. Oh well.

Chris......Its about 99%.  I think the supervisors are happy, kinda got my speed back.

Sawyer....I liked the engine very much, but with the layout getting expanded.....well.......I need some track, turnouts, etc.  It had to go.

Afternoon/Evening, Flo, I'll have a bowl of broccoli cheese soup, whole grain baguette, and a RBF, please 'n' thank you!

Sawyer, you go for it - especially try out a college level course or two. As you said, you might even not have to take some when you go to college... Thumbs Up Hey, it's not the good weeks that are the problems, it's adjusting to the fact that we don't get them all that good. One good thing with MRR'ing is that with all the parts of it (weathering, layout design, benchwork, tracklaying, scenery, research/MR reading, etc.), there's always something else we can do for a change of pace.

TMarsh
Come to think of it, nothing seems to last long anymore especially the daysWhistling. Well except for payments!Laugh

Boy, isn't that the truth, Todd!

TMarsh

Barry- Is that a Dopplar Radar tower? I've heard what they look like. I guess I could look it up....

Todd, I just think that's an older radar tower (to protect it from the weather) (could be Doppler, but hard to tell without a 'peek under the cover'). When I was a teenager, we had our Air Explorers (part of Boy Scouts) meetings at the Air National Guard building at Lambert Field (St. Louis Airport), and the tower for the airport was on top of the same building. (We even got a chance once to go up the stairs and watch the controllers - but "DO NOT TOUCH ANYTHING....") Nowadays, that is something that I doubt anyone will get to experience - unless their folks work for the Secret Service or the U.S. Government, however.

And Barry, what's so 'odd' about that elevator? Smile,Wink, & Grin Is that a sand processing facility on a sandbar in the river/edge of lake? Good set of photos; you've had good success on your rail/photo trips (when the weather cooperates and lets you). Wow!! 14" corn ears? That sounds yummy - er, I mean great!

Ray - aren't you glad you're a volunteer on days like that? Oops You go home as tired as if you were working for pay on a railroad, actually. Dead

PC - Ouch! Glad that Autumn wasn't hurt worse than she already was, and I'm sure she is indeed feeling it in her leg. Will add her recovery to my prayer list (and that the whole truth on the accident will come out). AngelAngel And will pray for some rest for you and the missus, as well. Looks from the damage like the other car was about even with her and coming from the right corner when it hit her car.

DerJohn, what amazes me most is that (IIRC) you're building your tar trailer in Horribly Oversized scale(!), but you model in iNvisible scale - unless you've been thinking about changing over and haven't told us yet...Whistling Great work - you sure you weren't an engineer before you went into the ministry? Thumbs Up

I thought I heard some shouting last night, but just rolled over and went back to sleep. Was that you, Mark (Hoople)? Oh yeah, Happy B-Day - and have fun figuring what you want to use that money for. Thumbs Up

Jeff - five years? Yeah, I'd say it's high time to try the surgery, since it isn't appearing to fix itself...

Ulrich, I'd agree on the walking suggestion - and if you have some more uplifting music in a player, that also helps with it. Exercise can help stimulate the body's own chemistry some.

Lee, looks like the LS&W continues to expand its empire Thumbs Up (and Santa has a cute helper, too)! Yeah!! (Hmm, you seem to have stirred up several of the Diners with those pics!). Smile,Wink, & Grin Hey, when are/did you start up with the new job? I musta Zzz'ed off if you already mentioned it.

Robby, great job on the CSX hopper. Tough call on the loco, but then again, depending on when you get the layout back in operation, you might get a better one with whatever improvements the manufacturers have made on them by then. Do you still have any other locos? Good to hear your arm's most of the way there. Thumbs Up

Chris - good to hear you're keeping busy (now, to persuade THAT editor that the articles are just fine (and no need to do anything more than run the spelling checker across them...). Will add THAT to the prayer list, also - it'd be nice for you to get a brief meeting with her, I'm sure.

About time for me to head out for now. Have to start the (groooaaannnnn...) mental adjustment of getting back to w**k tomorrow morning, and see what this week may bring. May you all have a good night's rest (and only a little rain from Bill for JR, Dick, DerJohn and Fergie) and a good great Monday.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Thumbs Up Hey, it's not the good weeks that are the problems, it's adjusting to the fact that we don't get them all that good. One good thing with MRR'ing is that with all the parts of it (weathering, layout design, benchwork, tracklaying, scenery, research/MR reading, etc.), there's always something else we can do for a change of pace.

Yeah Jim, only problem is all I have that I can do right now is paint/weather. might start a diorama though.

Robby, you got a point man.

Evenin' folks!

Another very successful and fun day at Diesel Days at the museum.  Turns out the RS3 #211 has a broken water pump.  Prts will have to be ordered, so she is probably out of service for the rest of the season.

LSWrr
Ray, I enjoyed the videos of 211, but it threw me off a little; 211, looked, sounded, and smelled like a RS3, I had to look up RS3 with the twin funnel stacks and learned she was a RS3M.  I see she was a former PENNCENTRAL locomotive back in the 70’s.

Yep, old #211 had quite a career over the last 50+ years.  She has on at least 2 occasions survived the scrap line. Once at least narrowly....  The twin stacks are not original but came from the replacing of the ALCO Prime Mover with an EMD 567B Prime Mover which is what she is still running today.  You can see it in this photo:

For any of you want to read more about here, go here

Today we had a wide range of clientele ranging from a lady in a wheelchair to a gentleman who had great difficulty climbing steps to some teeney boopers who were very "grossed out" that I made them hold on to the grab irons and railings riding outside on the deck of the Penn Central.  The two girls decided to change their attitude after I described what could happen when the brakes are applied to the train and they have no hand holds.......  One finally looked at the other and said, "eeeeiuuu, why are we riding out here....?"  I told them you will be very safe if you do as we ask....  Then we had the 20 something Dude who knows everything about trains and safety because HE volunteers at the XYZ railroad for their passenger excusions......  I gave the standard talk about holding onto a rail if you are standing inside or outside on the caboose.....  he just grinned and said, Its OK, I don't have to do that.... Did I tell you that I volunteer at the XYZ Railway?...."  I finally got all over his case and told him that around here our Volunteers model proper behaviour for our passengers!  he got the message and begrudgingly held on to  the rail......  When he got off the car host from the other platform of the caboose came over and said, What a Flaming Jerk!  (actually he called him somethng else but I can't really quote him here.  I asked Harold if I was within protocal to dump on him, and he said (as the conductor), "absolutely!  I was just about to stop the train and ask him to get off!  We were later talking about him to the dispatcher for the day, and he said, "Oh really, if volunteers at the XYZ Railway he should be aware of AAR rules that mandate holding on when the train is in motion.  I'd have kicked him off right there and then!"  I also let the fellow know that I knew several of the paid professionals that work for the XYZ Railway.... That cooled his heels a bit as well!

The lady in the wheelchair was a sketch as was her husband.  Riding the train was this years "trill".  Last year she went bungie cord jumping!!!  Yep 120' straight down.... In her wheelchair!!!  We love to help out people like her who are so, so appreciative of our getting her on the train!  Adds a very good feeling to volunteering there.  Of course just getting to ride on antique equipment all day is a high in it self!

I have yet to catch up on all the posts.  So have a great evening all!

Good evening Diners. Johnboy Thanks for your thoughts! (and BTW, D. Duck must have a permanent seat at our Rivet Counter!)  Happy to report that Bill, while still a Hurricane, has gone past quickly and without causing damage or flooding here. In fact I was reminded of the line from "Albert and the Lion"..."...There were no wrecks, and nobody drownded, ‘fact nothing to laugh at, at all!"  We were truly blessed.

Ray:

By Monday or Tuesday I bet Thunder Hole in Acadia will be "talking" pretty good.
...your observation to Fergie in the last Diner location...did you see that 11 people were swept away there today? 9 rescued so far, 2 still missing at our 6 o'clock news time.

PC: Autumn is being prayed for (included in our service here this a.m.) Hope she heals up quickly and isn't put off driving.

Grandpa Paul: on Nathanel John.

TeenSteam:

(by CapeJim ) maybe Ulrich might be able to give you some info on 'across-the-pond' steam. I think there are other Diners familiar with British steam (DerJohn and others), but DerJohn and Ulrich (Ulrich) are in more often than our few British/English/Scottish/Welsh Diners, who haven't stopped by to visit recently.
...sorry to disappoint, but I'm no longer  as familiar as I used to be. Mind you, I was inoculated with the mrr virus at high school (for want of a better term recognizable to most Diner Denizens) in England where one of the teachers ran the model club and scratch built GWR locos and stock in OO brass.Bow  We were on a line to Swindon, and I recall one summer spent watching line after line of BR steam being hauled away for scrapping there. In fact Lee's url brought back a lot of memories. More often than not our train to school was pulled by a GWR Class 8750 Pannier Tank, it says there!  You asked about wheel sets for BR steam...have you tried Northwest Short Line, or Bee Line?
Ulich, I bought a Holden B12 in 00 scale and fits fine in an HO gauge. I only have a few flange problems on code 83 track
...I haven't read on from Page 3 to see if this is answered, but the reason is no mystery, OO Scale runs on HO Guage. Don't ask me why, but it made it possible for me to run a Hornby Intercity train, and that GWR Class 8750  on my British Columbia Raiway HO layout when we lived in B.C. (In fact I think I may still have the driver and fireman from that somewhere. If I come across them I'll PM you.)

Todd:

I'll be interested to see how this flea speck of a model turns out. Looks fantastic so far. I'm already picturing the tar stains and spills all down the sides.
...Actually Todd, it's in HO already; sort of a diversion for me before I finish the fence at the container dock, or whatever it was I was doing before I needed a diversion! Thanks for the kindly thoughts re Bill, and he seems to have done as he was told!

Ulrich:

... So it will remain a life on the dole -
...only if you say it will My 2 cents I agree with the others here on this. Things will get better. I read last week where German consumer confidence took a huge leap up. That can't hurt, as it feeds into the public perception. I know employment is usually the last to recover in a recession, but remember you've friends pulling for you here, people you feel confident enough about to share as you did.

Mark: My MIL's hairfixer went to their Moncton, NB concert and really enjoyed it. Not my tipple of Schnapps, but to each his (or in this case her) own. Hope you have a great time.

Lee:

cooler weather after he (Bill) passes.
...it's pretty tropical feeling here right now, and won't cool down much overnight. Tomorrow may be a bit cooler, we shall see.

Sawyer: Usually happens that a "mountain top" week, or day even, is turned into a valley PDQ. Welcome to life! (or in my case DCCClown)

CapeJim:

you sure you weren't an engineer before you went into the ministry?
...funny thing that, but in my Food Technologist days, I did design a meat pie production line; and of course I built a scale model for the demo to the Directors.  In the ministry ,I built a scale model of the redesign of the tower/entryway of the little country church whose folks I was pastoring.  That project was my own design too, and the model served to get the thing approved at all the necessary levels. (Tobermory Ont. Barry, but the whole building's been replaced now I understand.) However, most of what I know eningeering wise I've picked up since I re-started mrrback in B.C.in the 80s!!Whistling

Well, that's me caught up for now. I'm off to do a bit more on that trailer, and then it will be bedtime once again. So, I'll say goodnight and God Bless. Prayers continuing for all in need of healing, comfort, prosperity and peace.Angel

Jim......I still have a GP35 Cotton Belt.  The plan was to sell it (WLE), and get another engine/track.   Now I believe its going to be mostly track buying.  I could probably sell a weathered car and get another engine.   I never even got to run the engine thou Blindfold

Confused how'd I miss that? Oh well, it doesn't take away from the modeling kudos. I'm still looking forward to seeing the finished project. I'm glad Bill took it easy on you.

Ray- There always seems to be one in the crowd. The know it all, look at me because I do the same thing. Usually causes the most problems because he thinks you'll cut him some slack. You did the right thing. IF he even was a volunteer from XYZ.
