Did a bit of ordering of scenery items from Walther's today.

First, from Busch, background scenes, hilly landscape. Ordered 3 of these. Bckgrnd Hilly Landscape    189-2872

Detail Associates, background Rail-Scene, Rail-scene farm town    229-7508

Detail Associates, background Rail-Scene, Rail-scene land    229-7509

Detail Associates, background Rail-Scene, Rail-scene woods    229-7510

I also have on hand 18 sheets of sky blue poster board and enough white glue to stop a small army in it's tracks. Is it fairly obvious that I'm getting ready to build a new scenery backdrop?

Cocoa in a large  Burlington Northern  mug, please & thanks.

Looks like a lot of mrr'ing projects underway in here. Keep posting pics, please!

***Robby, sorry about your wife's troubles. Glad your new job is working out.

I'm stuck on finishing the assembly of the wife's Hospital building until I get some lights to stick in it. Now is the time to do it before the upper walls & roof are glued in place. In the meantime, I have other projects to work on.

Jeff.... I gave up on water based glues and pastes for paper backdrops due to wrinkling that took place as glue was absorbed into paper. I use 3M 77 spray adhesive while wearing a respirator. ......Maybe, your white glue is OK, but you may wish to test a small piece first......... I don't want you to have the experience I had. I put up a lot of paper backdrop one evening, and the next morining is was all stretched out into bubbles and wrinkles. It was awful..........

I spread the glue very thin so that it dries within 5 minutes and doesn't soak through the paper. It's a trick I learned in art class back in '74. I've used it on everything from cardboard to tracing paper and have had only one mishap. That was letting my father attempt to help. He didn't spread the glue out enough and the paper had bubbles the size of pancakes. Needless to say I don't let him help anymore. Oh yeah, I always use Elmer's glue for this. Tite-Bond white glue is OK for sticking down foliage and turf but for backdrops I always use Elmer's.

Evening all. Chloe, I'll take a RBF, thanks.
Been busy since I've last been in (yesterday morning).

Robby- Congrats and glad to hear the new job went well! Sorry to hear about your wife's report, though. Maybe it'll go better next time. As for that section of the layout, maybe you could cut it off and move it over and build between the two parts. Just a thought. And that Ann Arbor car is looking good! Thumbs Up
Todd- My layout's looked worse than that. But i got it cleaned off, and hopefully it'll stay that way...
Ulrich- Guess I wasn't around, but sorry to hear about your "adventure." Glad you're on the right track now.
Tom- That 2-8-8-2 is purdy!
Phillip- Where do you find all those cool smiles? I's gots to get me soma those.

Well, I just ordered a BN Blue Box SW1500 from Atlas. And the "state government" (my parents) will be giving funds to help purchase a few NRE 3GS21Bs for the Tri-State Railway. The railway will be purchasing three, one to operate in each state (CT, NY, NJ), but I'll only be representing one, the "State of New Jersey" unit, number 1002, since my layout is only set in NJ. Although they're Atlas Trainman, they're "Trainman Plus," so they'll have extra details that are not found on regular Trainman models. I'll be heading up to a hobby shop in Pt. Pleasant sometime before the end of the month to preorder one. I can't wait until this thing arrives in January!Big Smile

Guess that's about it. I'll be in the back booth for a while before I head out.

NittanyLion

Came across something some of you guys might be interested in.

At some point, a tiny fraction of my tuition got funneled into a project called Penn Pilot.  (http://www.pennpilot.psu.edu/)  It only works for Pennsylvania, which makes a lot of sense.  The neat thing about it is that its like Google Earth.  Except back in time.  They come in three batches, the late 30s early 40s, late 50s early 60s, and late 60s early 70s.  The resolution is extraordinary, given the technology available insofar as aerial surveys.

Looks like some helpers? on the south rim of the Horseshoe Curve in 1938.

The B&O's Glenwood yard was a busy place in 1938 as well.

The data seems to be rather extensive.  Even very rural locations that still don't have high res imagery of the current data available online have 70 year old coverage.  I've only looked at western and central PA but I'm sure Philly is just as covered.

My dad went crazy over this. It also helped clear up some mysteries (Such as the narrow gauge that used to run by my house.) and brought up some family history lessons, and the location of mines in Scranton and other stuff. Thanks! Bow

Just dropped in for a night-cap, and to say Hi!  Thoughts a nd prayers for all those on the sick and stress list, and also general rejoicing with those for whom things are looking up a bit.

I had a half decent haul of stuff from our two LHSs the last time I was in..28th July I think.  A flat with stakes that I made a more modern brake wheel setting for, and liked so much I did the depressed centre flat as well.  An Erie covered hopper  and a CN grain hopper (actually that one was the trip before last). A Dixie hopper and a 80' cryogenic McCain car (Maritimes potato products, yum!) needs knuckle couplers. A built up hotel - Model Power I suspect.

On the layout front, i've got the rail access end of the container port security fence coming along, and as to work area clutter, here's the "work bench"...which is why the actual work is done here! ...not that this is much better. Clown

Dentist tomorrow - yikes that's today here already...Goodnight all.

Just checking in to see what's going on. Decent night at the restaurant. I'll talk quiet so's to not wake Robby.

Tom- Maybe the Yuba River is as proud of their new loco as you are and keep it clean. Hmm? That reminds me I'm gonna have to revisit your website.

Robby- What can I say. Looks real good. Good luck on selling it though I don't think you'll need it.

Jeff- Needless to say I wasn't enough of a beans and corn bread kinda guy when I was at Tunks. Nice haul at the not so LHS. I have the same buildings ( Skips and Roberts Dry Goods) setting side by side in Gold Creek. They are the ones with their backs to the camera to the left of the church. I'm glad you posted the links to your backdrops. The ones my hobby shop carries do not really fit the scenes I need or want and are much more expensive and the ones that are less expensive aren't very good. Kind of cartoonish. The ones you posted are real nice I must look into Walthers choices. All of those you linked would fit my scenes at various places.

Barry- Not to fear my good man. Gold Creek will not be modernized. Just rearranged.

John- Looks like you did well shopping also. I really like the fence. Is the gate motorized? You have set the bar for my fence around the brewery. I see I have 1 square inch more free space on my desk, oops, I forgot I was calling it a modeling bench, than you. I feel pretty proud about that.ApproveLaugh

Prayers for those in need. Zzz

I've just got a meeting and a bit of left over stuff to do today and then I'm off for 4 weeks!! YAY!!Smile,Wink, & Grin

Todd: Whew---thank goodness for that!Approve

Chloe, I'll have a coffee and a toasted bagel to go please----

Good Morning All,

A regular to go and a donut in a sack please. Tons to do again and a trip to Essex to pick up a motor as well. The CFO is off to San Diego tomorrow for another of her Seniors meets so things are especially fraught this morning as we try to get loose ends set for next week when (gulp) I run this place with just my daughter to help.

Der - that's the problem with work benches. (I'll just stow this one can here underneath I still have lots of.... oh now I can't fit either foot underneath cause there's too much stuff - how did that happen Confused).

Thanks Zoe,   Catch y'all later, J.R.

Good Morning Folks!

Thoughts and prayers for those in need, healing, recovery and bed rest! Angel

I'll have the Southwest Scramble this morning Chloe! And some of Ed's OJ and a cup a Joe please. Dinner

Glad you like my breakfast choice from a few days ago Sue! Chef

Hi Ray, so glad to hear that you have started using the spice mixes, the Rub is getting more popular and selling twice as much as the Cajun mix, I am going to look into getting it bottled by a professional bottling company here in NC soon. Maybe I can quit my day job before it might end at the end of the year....Yeah!! Let me know how the BBQ Beer Chicken comes out for you!

Oh, and hey, we have two Chihuahua's both are the miniature kind, one weights in at 6.5 lb and the other is 5 lb. Very tiny lap dogs.

Jim, that DPM garage kit/built-up is a nice little one to get back started into structures. Just the right size for tinkering around with structures if you've been away from them for awhile.

Hey Robbie, will you get FedEx shipping discounts? Maybe your can ship with FedEx now when you sell your weathered stuff! Thumbs Up And I agree with Sawyer, if you need to expand the layout don't be afraid to knock out some to make it better. I toiled with the same thoughts and just went ahead and did it, cut out a 6' section of track to make way for a much better track alignment on my layout last week. And sorry to hear about the wife, hope she is better now. Angel

And your latest Ann Arbor box car is fantastic! Cool

Todd, nice pics from the layout! Thumbs UpThumbs Up Even it it looks like pasta!

Chris, airbrushing and patience are a dual package don't cha know! Laugh

Nice to see Sunny Cali Tom in the diner!

Hey Garry, pass the salt and pepper over here please! Thanks! Dinner Lunch is just around the corner....

<<< grabs the pepper and takes another bite of the Southwwest Scramble >>>

And I'll second that motion by Garry on the 3M 77 adhesive spray, good stuff there!

Barry, speaking of working in a cubicle (me too) there is a sign near mine that states:

"How can I think out of the box when I work in a cube?"

Hi Der John, good luck at the dentist today!  Smile,Wink, & Grin Hey, that GATX Articar is way cool! Whistling

And so Garry, for lunch today I'm putting in my order early for some Shrimp and Pasta Pesto Alfredo.

<<< takes another sip a Joe and a then a bite of scrambles>>>

Good morning folks.

It's starting to feel like summer around here finally.  Just in time for my weeks vacation at my mothers lake house next week.  As soon as I get in some lake time, we can go back to fall like weather.  Highs in the seventies was good for the suit business!

My wife had an interview two days ago. A couple of optometrists are looking to hire somebody to run the business side of their practice so they can get back to being doctors. Both doctors just happen to be good customers of mine. I hope they don't hold knowing me against her!
They told her that they will make the decision within the month. The pay is going to be about the same as what I make. That's twenty thousand less a year than she use to make, but more than unenjoyment! We have our fingers and toes crossed that they'll hire her.

I ordered new wheels for my Athearn heavyweight passenger cars the other day. I noticed that they don't spin well and have trouble tracking on code 83 turnouts. I hope the new wheels will help.

Progress continues in a measured pace on the layout. I go nuts for a few days, then nothing for a few. It sems that I have to go to this place called work every day. It's really getting in the way of my social life and hobby time!Big Smile

I hope everyone has a good day!

Goood morning. Bowl of Super Sugar Crisp pleas and toast with plum jam and coffee thank you. What? I know they call it "Golden" Crisp now, but for crying out loud it's been years, are we still that afraid of the word "sugar".

Looks like I'll be heading to Hammers Hobbies today (the "other LHS" you may have heard me refer to. The are a multi hobby shop that splits nicely between model cars and planes etc, RC stuff and choo choo trains. Not nearly like my FLHS but they have some scratch building supplies and a smattering of structures and stuff and a fairly decent, actually, selection of cars and locomotives. Plus they too are a discount shop. About 20% off MSRP.) I need some turnouts and some cork, and a piece or two of flex to begin my project. I hope I don't get in a hurry to see some trains run and botch it up. I'm looking forward to getting the two bad spots gone. I'll probably generate 3. Then grocery store and work at 5.

Barry-Is you new job title a promotion? Or a nice name that translates to more work for ole Bare.

Ryan- Oh my you're right! LaughI guess I've been hanging around pasta too much Laugh. Looks like I have another recipe to try.ChefDinner

I think I'll keep this short this morning. Busy day.

Have A Great Day!!! And Happy August 7th to those who celebrate.

If you have any hot incandescent lights near it or shining on it or sunlight hitting it direct it will fade. I use four 27 watt CF lights in room with all but 2 small windows covered. Back when I was using incandescent bulbs the paper would fade badly.

Just got back from town. Went to see the foot doc this morning. The wounds on my feet are maintaining a status quot which neither he or I are happy about. I go back to see him again on the 31st. At the time we'll be filling out the paperwork for surgery on Sept 8th. It can't happen fast enough for me.

Afternoon folks!

Flo, I need some comfort food!  So a cheeseburger and fries with gravy sounds good.  Yes I know that isn't on my diet!  Don't care!

This morning I did one more check of the back area of the main room on the layout.  Cleaned a fea more spots where I had painted the top of the rail.  Found quite a few last night when I ran the 4-6-0 with the local milk train to check out the track.  That is one of my "most likely to find any problem" locos.  he I decided that I could put away the Topside Creeper and get the area cleaned up.   So, I pull the creeper up and around the aisle and while watching the legs on the bottom of it, rammed the top part right into the coal tower!!!!   Aaaaaaaarrrrrrrgggggggggghhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GrumpySadAngryAngryAngryOops  Sure glad that none of you were here as the language was not my usual type!!!  I think I used every nasty word I know.... several times!  Slammed some doors and pounded a couple of inanimate objects.  This is the third time something like this has happened to the coal tower.  This time I detroyed the stairs going up the side of the tower.  I have spent the last 2 hours piecing it back together again.  I will have to fabricate a couple of missing railings and then paint the staircase to try and cover up the damage.  Not a happy man!

Nice day weather wise here in the Finger Lakes.  Sunny with a high around 75°F.  The air conditioners are shut off and the windows open.  Nice for August.

Have to get materials and details all together for Sunday's NMRA picnic.  Waiting to hear back from one person so I can finalize the schedule for the day and make sure all the helpers are aware of "what and when".

Hope you are all having a better day than I!

Jerry.... Do you have caboose markers on the power chair, yet?

Sawyer ..... Uh, huh.... a week at the beach is too much.....hmmmmmmmmm

Jeff I hope the Sept 8 surgery works out OK for you.

John ......... That fence looks great. Hard to believe it is N scale. .

Ray.... I must have been writing my post while you posted yours. Your adventure seemed like the sort of thing the old Laurel and Hardy movies portrayed.  Remember, the L&H skits when they carried a ladder, and bumped into all sorts of things as they turned around? Your story of the topside creeper reminded my of that.  .... For your next act.............

Jerry- Yes I like Hammers. Friendly place, just not as much stuff as Castle Trains. However they do have a good supply and the order from Walthers and are included many times in they participating sale shops. Understandable though as Castle Trains is a trains only shop. No I've never been to First Hobby. I don't get to Decatur often and with both Hammer's and Castle Trains having just about everything I need except money, luckily I don't have to go farther than Springfield. I do plan on going to First Hobby if/when I find myself in Decatur.

Ray- I thought I might have heard something I just thought it was thunder. Of all the times for that to happen.....Banged Head(as if there is a good time) If it will make you feel better and take some pressure off, I'll rip up some track on your behalf.

EDIT: Whoops Laugh forgot why I stopped in. Went to Hammers today as Castles is closed on Fridays and picked up some switches 2 left code 100 for Gold Creek and 1 left and 1 right code 83 for the new siding on theh route to Gold Creek from the ttown with no name. all are #6 CustomLines like I used on the new extension. I hope they serve me as long as the old snap switches, (about 40 years), but will not cause trouble with long cars etc. Also I picked up a white fire tuck from Boley that was out of the package for 4 bucks.

Some fantastic weather we've been having here south of Boston. It's about time. June was the wettest I can recall. Only 5 days of sunshine, thought I was in Seattle...

Finally able to head up north to Lake Winnipasakee, Meredith, NH. Found a great B&B Inn there.

JR: How's the house coming along?  It's good that the shop is still keeping busy. I just hope things will pick up here soon. Used to be able to be rather selective and choosey about the w**k, but now I'm taking anything that comes along. I agree with adding more feeds to the bus. I would never rely on any solder joints/ rail joiners,, plus the added resistance of the rail length doesn't help either. We use drops at every rail section @ the club to eliminate any troubles like this. Simple insurance for sure..

Barry: Hope you make good w/ all that time off. Any plans to head out of town or just doing a "stay-cation"

Jeff: Think you need to find another route to Wallyworld, Good thing you caught that truck in the rearview!  Been noticing quite a bit of pics w/ the layout and equipment, coming along real good. Especially like those engine facility night shots you did a while back.

Philip: How's everything these days. Hope all is well w/ the family. How's the layout progressing?  Haven't noticed many pics or progress on the layout. Might have just missed it.

Corey: Think you might be procrastinating w/ that trestle, or just haven't figured exactly the way you want it? Anyway, there's a lot of other projects to keep busy.

Robby:  Twins, miscarriage, reports like this will make you nuts. Glad the wife is feeling better. My prayers are with you both. Glad you got the Fedex job, times are tough, not many jobs out there. Gotta luv those W&LEs. I always like running coal drags. Now you're going to need all the hoppers and loads.

Chris: I like that sihlouette shot too, great for testing your loco recognition skills...at first I would have thought it a GP40, until seeing the 2 dynamic fans.

GARRY: Nice to be back, I see you are making some good progress w/ the layout and misc equipt.

Jim: So is your w**k still running you crazy, I know it can be demanding at times. Good to be back, always great to see what all's  been up to. I personally don't have any new pics, but the club website should be updated soon, There we have quite a few. A lot of new members these guys are chopping at the bit to do scenery, and a few are some real pros (put my work to shame)  http://ssmrc.org/  Check out the Utube videos, Some good stuff.    That Chessie coal drag is mine.

Sue: As long as the layout runs, excercise those locos all you can. There's always plenty of time to do layout work..

Rob: Ever figure out what it is that you have trouble eating? Did they test for any gallbladder problems?

Lee: Sounds like you still have your work cut out for you, Is this an around the wall design? Levels? Staging?

Ryan: Hope that job worries are only just that at this time.

Ray: Remember, you can't use that "rub" on the Chiwawa

Tom: That is a real sweet loco. The detail on the Heritage is superb. Always enjoy the pics from your layout.

I know I missed a few of the gang, sorry.

My youngest daughter is on tour w/ her drum corps "Citations", they are heading to the semi finals in Indianapolis. Wish I could surprise her and be there this weekend. Acually her mother and a friend made it to Madison. WI a few of years ago. My wife had just been between Chemos at the time and Did she ever suprise my little girl ,April, She will remember that for the rest of her life. (For those that don't know, she lost her mother shortly after)

I am still enjoying the company of my terrific lady, Linda. we have been together over a year now.

Got to go, a few things still to do.

 Good afternoon everybody.

WellI got off of work this morning, and the wife called saying shes in bad pain!!!   Took her to the OBGYN, and they did a ultrasound.  Of course more blood work.  Now shes in the hospital, just for over night.  They are going to give her a shot to "abort" whats left of the pregnancy.  Shes in pretty bad pain due to that.  The doctor will release her in the morning.  So I guess I have the house to myself tonight.  Plus I haven't been to sleep all day.

Both my cars sold, and that will help  money wise.  Maybe put some towards the layout.

Other than that, thats been pretty much my day.

I will pop back in later tonight.

Coffee in a large UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

***Bob K., one of the blood tests I go in for next week is for determining that. Whether diagnosed with Celiac disease or not, there is little question (following my self experiment) that gluten is the major trigger for my inflamatory troubles. The blood test will just verify what I have finally figured out on my own. Just hope I'm not creating too many new granulomas between now and the blood test.

I finally put in our train order, 90% of it being HO stuff for the wife.Mischief Two buildings each from Walthers, Nu-Comp, Rix, and one from Imex. This will completely finish out her town. Also added a Scenic Express Flock/Turf blended 6-pack to mix with my natural (baked) stuff.

Y'all have a good one!

I got the DPM Schultz's Garage kit done with a little twist. I wanted it to look more like a city building so I cut the front and rear down slightly and installed a flat roof. It still needs a couple vents on the roof and a rooftop AC unit but it's done for the most part. Now I'm starting on the DPM Seymour Block kit.

Evenin; folks!

OK, my blood pressure has returned to normal (I think).  Todd, I don't doubt that you could hear the thunder all the way to where you are.....  I was not a happy man.  I got some of it put back together right after I had the disaster, and will get back to it later this evening for a bit.  In hindsight, there were a few problems with the staircase any way involving some pieces that didn't fit right, so I may end up with a better model.  Who knows.....

On the other hand, this is me with my "little" kittie Manét:

Robby, prayers that all goes well for your wife.  Tough time!

Jeffrey, you mention surgery.  What do they plan to do to help you?

See you all later!
