Robby, Sorry to hear about your report from your wife's doctor. Will add prayers for you two for healing of all kinds. On your layout, so long as you can reuse your turnouts (that's the more expensive part), I'd say go either way on your plan. Do you have a layout design program (RTS or such) to help you? Or some graph paper, pencil and some drafting tools? One thing to keep in mind when you widen the layout is - can you reach the back side of whatever you're gonna put in? Otherwise, Mr. Murphy will guarantee that a car/loco will derail in that back area where you can't get to it - and block that track... We'll see you in the morning if you're still awake when you get back from work.
Todd, I'd say your layout looks immaculate compared to mine - as you mentioned, your track is mostly clear... Mine doesn't have that much level space, and it is way more loaded down with 'stuff.'
So Chris, now that you've mastered the intercontinental ballistic airbrush cap (and gun), you're just... uh... sitting around watching paint dry, right?
BridgeTom - hey, what's the Walthers number on that Gordon Biersch bottle car? My coaling tower will be a little shorter than yours I think, but maybe I can make it work... Good to hear you're having better weather lately out there. I'm guessing that Uff-Dah and Spooky have approved the exporting of those locos, right? Or are they only making you keep the Mountain and the Yellowstones?
Barry, I'm sure you are glad to have the report finished and turned in. Now, I seem to recall that you had mentioned some elusive thing called a 'vacation' was coming for you, correct?

Spent most of the morning mowing my parent's yard. It was already in the upper 80's when I started at 9 am. I finished just before noon and stumbled home for a bit of lunch and some well deserved rest. Went to Alexandria in the afternoon. First to the LHS and picked up a Walther's 50' REA Express Reefer then to Hobby Lobby and picked up a Bachmann Canadian covered hopper (Santa Fe - that won't last long), a Mini-Metals '68 Ford Galaxy Fire Chiefs car and 3 new DPM kits. The #12100 Seymour Block, #10500 Skip's Chicken and Ribs and the #10200 Robert's Dry Goods. Stopped at Wal-Mart and picked up 10 sheets of sky blue poster paper. With what I already had at home that gives me 18 sheets, more than enough to do up a new backdrop.

Came across something some of you guys might be interested in.
At some point, a tiny fraction of my tuition got funneled into a project called Penn Pilot. (http://www.pennpilot.psu.edu/) It only works for Pennsylvania, which makes a lot of sense. The neat thing about it is that its like Google Earth. Except back in time. They come in three batches, the late 30s early 40s, late 50s early 60s, and late 60s early 70s. The resolution is extraordinary, given the technology available insofar as aerial surveys.

The B&O's Glenwood yard was a busy place in 1938 as well.
The data seems to be rather extensive. Even very rural locations that still don't have high res imagery of the current data available online have 70 year old coverage. I've only looked at western and central PA but I'm sure Philly is just as covered.

This is good because by the weekend Saturday, the day Martin( my one friend) and I go to St. Thomas and area to do the photo stuff, will be muggy and 30C. I am just back from selling my railroading goodies - you will not believe how little value all these "collectors" items have when you are forced to sell them! But it is cash and will buy food for another 3 - 4 weeks. My train room is nearly empty - cannot go in there anymore with out getting tears in my eyes.
Chris - it was cardiac arrest - called the doc this morning to inquire about some results. He told me that sometimes a body just shuts down if things are getting unbearable.

Robby- I am so very sorry to hear of the miscarriage. Yes I can imagine she would be upset. My prayers are with you guys.
JR- Yep no overall plan, that's me. It started out as a 4X8 double oval with a small yard and a engine house with turntable and three stalls. Then I expanded and made it larger to about 5X12. Then came the other addition which was 2 plans from MRR that didn't fit the size they said it would, so I modified that etc. then the other didn't work out either. The problem is I want a loop with stuff to do and large curves for longer cars and 6 wheel locos and sidings, a decent yard, you know all the good stuff you can have with a basement size layout....., in one room.
Tom- My intention was to also show the mess that exist under the layout with the monsters and my modeling desk (from here on out referred to as bench). I guess when I took the picture I subconsciously just couldn't show the mess of stuff accumulating under the layout. Like I said, it looks better in pictures. Now that you mention it, maybe the giant beer bottle had something to do with all the people passed out around the water tower.
Chris- Thanks for the barn compliment. I loosely based it on the old western TV shows I saw of the stable/blacksmiths in towns. It still needs some work and isn't done yet. (Hmph, Imagine that). Needs some Dullcote some more detailing and to be set "into the ground" It turned out a bit small I think but it'll do. Oh the sky, now that's a story. When it was a room before the great allowed wall coming down, the wife was trying her hand at fancy two color painting. She used red and white. Needless to say instead of the desired look it came out more like.... Well I called it the mass murder room. Anyway, I have yet to paint the walls (wich will require a primer coat of Kilz if that will even cover it)which is probably another thing I'll regret not having done when I should have.
(yawn) sleepy I am. (said in a rather convincing Yoda voice) Guess I'll pick up on page 13 when I awake. Again. In a little more than an hour.
Oh and for the record. The subsequent rooms,3, that she has painted in the same fashion, came out very nice and as expected. Of course she didn't use red either.

Well we have a nice respite from the heat and humidity. A cold front came through and it wasn't even 60F this morning. We've got the shop doors open and the big fans on to exchange the hot air for cool and the difference was noticable right away. I'll have the breakfast special and a regular coffee please.
Ulrich - sorry to hear of this additional problem on top of the rest of your woes. For sure stress doesn't help - probably why I have hypertension now (plus the family predisposition to it).
Robby - sorry to hear about the probable miscarraige. Most important is if your wife's ok. Hope your first day at the new job went well.
Todd - trying to run passenger equipment on a layout based on a 4x8 was what did me in. If you have an actual room to work in, the around the walls deal works real well as you can run large radaii in the corners. My second attempt was in a 9x9 more or less room and I ran an upper simple open 2 track loop with some sidings and an incline to a lower level point to point with lots of sidings and a large yard (never finished). The upper level was all cantilevered off shelf brackets with 1/4" ply topped with 2" extruded styrofoam and averaged 6' wide on the walls so I could run passenger equipment. The corners were 30" to 36" radius and most of the sidings were in the corners. Cheap, fairly easy to landscape and lots of fun. I never finished the lower level before the roof leak finished the whole thing off but it averaged 36" deep and had tons of switching to do.
That was a tasty breakfast - especially enjoyed the home fries - just the right amount of onion and seasoning - yum! Time to pick up tools and be a productive person. CUL, J.R.

Jim- your, and others as well, advice to Robby about the most difficult place to reach is comforting that Mr Murphy (gotta be polite, don't want him to show up any more than he does) visits others to knock cars off the track as well. Or causes a mouse to pick a sealed tunnel to die in. The location of the most current derail is the easiest of the two locations where a car split's a switch. Of course as you can tell they are old brass switches (maybe you can't the track looks brass but it's NS) but they don't usually cause problems, just the occasional wrong turn on the turnout. What usually happens is somehow the wheels change tracks in the frog. ????

Pork or Beef, sweet sauce, tangy sauce or no sauce. Mmm, mm, mmmmm! Speaking of snacks and Alexandria there was a place that served crawfish, (I know you don't like them), outside of Alexandria, set back off, I believe, the road to Leesville. Not sure it's been a few years since I‘ve been there and it was only once, but they served a big "snack" of crawfish there and it was real good. They had billboards all over the place for it. Can't remember the name of the place though.
All that talk of ribs has done flung a cravin' on me Zoe. Full slab please, no sauce I'll add as I choose, bring the rack of sauce cause I can't decide. Probably eat some without anyway. Oh I'm sorry, pork ribs please.
Ulrich- Sorry about your trainstuff. Hard times call for hard decisions. I hope the sacrifice gets you through until you get this deal. I'm remaining positive it will work out soon.
JR-Yup again. Passenger cars. Right now I have most turns at least 22" but there is one on the old section that is 18" and it is on the mainline so I'm afraid to buy anything other than 4 wheel locos or cars because of that. My Great Dome has three axle trucks and combined with it's length, it doesn't like that corner so it doesn't get run much.I really am contemplating around the room with an island......,or two......, or connected! Ooo, now there's a thought. Anyway that would remove the last 18" but would make the whole Town With No Name almost impossible to loop around and come back out without another sharp curve. The town is on the main and has (is going to have) the other passenger station. Another reason I haven't really "installed" the structures is I've come to realize, but don't seem to want to admit, this plan ain't a workin' and adding or modifying ain't workin' either. I'm afraid I'm just going to have to make some major changes to get what I've come around to wanting. THANKS TO YOU GUYS!!!! You know more of a Railroad than a trainset. I'm going to have to tear something down. It was soooo much easier when all I wanted was a loop around a town.
I've got to incorporate the current ideas into a working track plan. I don't need an elaborate perfect plan, just something workable. Like this one is not. The good news is it should only cost time for the bench work and very minimal cost, I just might have enough track to at least lay the main, well probably not now that I think about it, I'd need more switches and to replace the remaining historical brass track. No WAIT! Brilliant! A Historical section of track! Kinda like the strip of bricks at Indy.

Well I'm up!!!!!!!! I can't sleep. Maybe its the sun, lawn mowers, a 70lbs boxer jumping into the bed, to beat up a cat .
Last night was my first night at FedEx. I worked the unload, and its like I was back at home. I did pretty good, since its been like 5 years since I worked at the other FedEx. This is a very small hub, and it has unload doors, but only loads "home delivery trucks". Its a job!!!!!!!!!
The plan today.....Is to finish up the Ann Arbor car, and who knows a nap? I have to go in tonight at 3:00am. More videos.
The wife is doing ok. She was thinking yesterday she caused what happened. Shes a lot better today. Plus I think shes happy I'm back to work.
I will get that car done, and post it later.

Hey, that's one thing this Diner is good for (as I think Dick J../greyfox has said in his sig) - we all get to learn from others' mistakes, so we don't *have* to repeat them (...even if I have on an occasion or two...). Time maybe for getting the paper and pencil (or RTS, or...) out and do some doodling. Just don't spill the ribs sauces on it, though. P.S. - I like your barn/blacksmith's shop!

I'll second that suggestion. When my wife died 22 years ago I went through some very hard times. I couldn't shake the feeling that I should have been able to "fix" it. I was very lucky to have some personal miracles happen or I wouldn't be here today chatting with you folks. Robby, don't hesitate to seek out the help of a trusted Pastor, friends, or medical personnel as needed. All can be important in the days and weeks following something like this. You and your wife are in my prayers!
Ulrich! Glad you got immediate help with the heart! Know that better times are just around the corner and this chapter can close and a better one can begin for you. You are in my thoughts and prayers!
Looks like there will be a small but reasonable sized group at the division picnic this coming Sunday. This is the first time in many years that the Lakeshores Division has had one. Wish twice as many people were coming, but it will be a good group and another chance to promote both the hobby and the Division.
Hope to get more scenery complete on the SLOW today. I am almost finished with rail painting, ballasting, and redoing the section I have been w**king on. I'll have some photos of the area this weekend for WPF.

Temperature's supposed to stay in the mid-70's today, with thunderstorms. That little low in the Pacific has moved in and is supposed to give us a taste of October, today. I just hope we don't have 'dry' lightning in the Sierra, otherwise any rain at all out here is extremely welcome.
Nittany: I love those old aerial photos. When I worked for the Forest Service in Truckee, we had a whole file of late 1930's aerial photos of the Donner Pass and Sierra Valley area--used to study them like crazy. It even showed the old logging railroads north of Truckee before they were taken up in the late 'forties, and with a magnifying glass you could even see an occasional logging train or two. Fascinating.
Todd: What, you have a mess UNDER the layout? Never heard of such a thing, LOL! I have NO idea what's under mine, I refuse to look. Come to think of it, I did hear some growling down there yesterday when I was out having an Op session. And no, it wasn't my under the table sound system, either.
Garry: The recession hasn't affected the Calif. RR museum, it's not on the list of cuts. In fact, money just became available to re-do the boiler and flues of old Sierra Ry #3 (the Petticoat Junction 4-6-0), so it should be running again in Jamestown next year. Don't ask me how, with the condition off the rest of the State. I think it was largely donations from private concerns. One thing out here, we take our RR history SERIOUSLY! Which may be why that upstart Union Pacific is still the 'new kid on the block' even after 25 years, LOL!
Robby: Ahah, the 'Duck-under'. I see your point, now. ALL 'duck-unders' should be elminated by the time you turn 30, otherwise they'll just turn around and bite you in the rear end as you get--ah--'more mature' and the back starts going, LOL!
Ulrich: Prayers to you, friend. Follow the doctor's orders to the Letter. And I'm sorry to hear about the model railroad. Prayers that things will turn for the better for you.
Jerry: That's a sweet looking 4-8-2 you've got there. Must be a Spectrum. Should run sweet and smooth. I've got one of the heavy mountains in HO, and I like it a lot.
Speaking of new locos, thought I'd share this little beastie with you guys--the new Proto 2-8-8-2. Surprisingly smooth and powerful. Here she is with a drag freight on the 2% eastbound grade of Yuba Summit. Of course, she looks a little bright and shiny for a drag-freight engine, but I'm not hitting her with the Bragdon chalks until I've got her completely broken in.

Jerry, you got the sweet end of that deal, thats for sure. BTW, you can make it a real stump puller if you slightly lift the axle blocks from the frame on the traction tire axle and slip a piece of masking tape in there on both sides, then reassemble it. If the traction tire axle is the third axle, swap the third and forth axles and do the tape trick and she'll climb the side of a house. These are great little loco's with just a little work. I've got 4 of them.

Speaking of the cardiovascular system, ULRICH! Glad they got to you quick and got you back. Somebody must've been in the right place at the right time, since survival rates here are (much better than 40 years ago) still fairly low. As a First Responder, EMT, and Paramedic, I was in on several resuscitation attempts...never got a "save." You are, truly, a very lucky guy. With the financial situation, it may not seem like it...but trust this former paramedic, somebody IS watching over you!! I too know the pain of selling off prized possessions. I had to several times over the past 4 or 5 years. It hurts sometimes, especially when I walk by the shelf that used to hold my customized, personalized fire helmet. It's the wrong color for the dept. I'm on now, but I still wish I had it. Selling it to a firefighter in England paid some bills though...kept things going. Everything happens for a reason. Keep fighting, we're with ya!
Also, while I gotcher ear Ulrich, I met a very nice lady from Germany today. She's visiting her distant American cousin. They've been e-mailing/exchanging letters for 2 years. The American visited her in Munich for 2 weeks, then brought German cousin home with her for 2 weeks. The German had her first taste of root beer...she said "It's pretty strange." I'm trying to remember how you described it...I think your description was far more colorful...
TODD: Good luck covering that paint. Kilz would be a good start, I'd still bet on multiple coats. We bought our house from a certified NUT, who liked to paint. We've hauled 52 cans of paint out of the shed, garage, and house over the past 4 years. Kit's studio (former dining room, we think) was painted in a light dusty mauve/pink kinda color...to cover up the multi-colored Pee Wee Herman's Playhouse/Hippee House look it had before. Kit wanted it a deep, dark red. So, I goes to Sears, get a gallon of... "Ruby Lips." Ya ever try to look really macho, manly, and straight while asking a burly guy for a can of "Ruby Lips" paint??? Anyhoo...it claimed "one coat coverage." My eye! I think the final tally was SIX coats. Unbelievable. My RR room was white with black zebra stripes. I think it took 3-4 coats of the two "sky blue" paints I used (darker up by the ceiling, lighter from floor on up). I put a CNW green and CNW yellow stripe around the room where the two blues meet. I hate painting...

Wow, 36" radius takes up more space than you'd think. I'll keep trying. Might have to go to 24" I hope not. Now is the time to try and make it work. I've decided to keep working on the structures that i have because I want them. However scenery construction shall cease. Which by the way would be hard to notice that it stopped. I'm going to work on a track plan that I like and redo the layout. I gave it some thought as I was weed eating until I used the last bit of string and decided if I continue to put it off it won't get done and I'll be adding that to the ever growing list of "wished I had'ves". Especially if I put more time and scenery materials in it. Thanks guys, you've succeeded in turning a trainset guy into a Model Railroad wannabe. I don't plan on being a rivet counter or a proto railroad modeler, just my own made up railroad using a fallen flag name because it seems easier to me (I hope the UP doesn't find out) that's enjoyable for me to run and build. With my budget, this could take a while.

Todd, yeah passenger equuipment looks cool but doesn't favor those of us who don't plan well. I could get over the looking clunky on a tight turn stuff, but the Walthers full size coaches plus my 1st release DL-109's just wouldn't have those 18" curves. And I also had a few bits of 15"R as well in the far reaches and sidings. The Bachman HW's do 18" ok because of their articulated couplers though I did retro fit them with hornhooks because they need really long vertical transitions on inclines otherwise.

Behold, the "old" Gold Creek. Before the upcoming reconstruction and it's impending destruction. (please remove any hats as this is a somber occasion)
In the second picture you may be able to see another trouble spot I have. At any rate this will not look the same after the reconstruction. I have a plan to relocate the passenger station and therefore the track. It will no longer be an abrupt change but more of a siding through town. That too will be relocated and will not be square with the world. Which by the way appears to be flat after all.
Progress pictures will be placed on the diner walls as things progress. Feel free to stop me if you see something going the wrong way. I will post the trackplan as soon as I get it presentable. Right now it's just a rough draft and shows little disruption except to the poor unknowing people of Gold Creek and since there appears to be only two ladies outside the restaurant gabbing, a poor fellow outside the bar who can't seem to find his car and a jolly fellow in a suit going into the bank who can't seem to stand up...... there doesn't seem to be much of a problem there.
EDIT: I've just noticed two wayward souls who seem to have driven off the bridge into th e dry creek bed. I knew I should have finished it before someone got in an accident. I hope they aren't hurt. No ambulance.
Every day this week I've come home from working hoping to find a UPS package from BLI on the porch but no joy so far. I'm starting to get impatient about box o'stuff I ordered from their yard sale. I really have the modeling itch lately and it needs scratched for a while until I can get over to my brothers and use his new tablesaw for some important work.
