The wife is fine, and she feels fine.  Thanks for all of the thoughts/prayers guys!!

Here is a couple fo pictures to give you a idea of what I am going to do to the layout.

 1.  The backdrop will be removed and the layout expanded to the end of the "gray" metal cabinet.  I have a piece of blue tape on the floor.  If you can see that, its a better idea of how far I am going out.

 2.  The shelves/metal cabinet will be moved to the underneath of the layout.  Since I won't have anymore room against the wall.

 3.  It will still have the upper and a lower part.  I'm still leaning towards having the top just do laps, and still keep the bottom for switching.

 4.  I will probably add another 10ft to the layout.  If it wasn't for the breaker box, and a cheap/not finished bathroom in the basement..........It would be a lot bigger.

I will add pictures when I do more.  The first thing I have to do is rip up track, and move some things around.   I hope to get more done next week, and the following weekend.

Ray- along with your "Don't even think about touching the models" sign, is it too late to get a T-shirt for you that says "Keep me away from the models." Wink

LOL!  Nope don't have THAT shirt..... Yet. Whistling   Probably should have, although I seem to do OK as long as I am not rolling a Topside Creeper around! Smile,Wink, & GrinLaugh

I do have one that says: YIKES!  AND I THOUGHT I WAS SCREWED UP...   As well as one that says: HOW CAN I EXTRACT MYSELF POLITELY FROM THIS CONVERSATION?!  Both are from my favorite store, Dispair.com.  I have worn the first one, but am waiting for the right time to wear the second.  Probably will be to some "important" meeting.........Whistling

Heat index reading for today is supposed to be 115.

I'm starting to sweat just thinking about it. I wouldn't spend alot of time fixin' your hair up. (chuckle)

I hear ya. My hair just gets a quick brush anyway. I'm fixing to go to Wal-Mart to turn in a Blue-Ray DVD I bought the other day. To those who don't know, Blue-Ray DVD's work ONLY on Blue-Ray players. They won't even work on a computer DVD drive.

We'll be joining Jeff for the sweat bowl today, High of 93F with a heat advisory in effect fom 1pm today til 7pm tomorrow with heat a index of 100 to 105F. Ok, ok. 100 to 105 is hot, but not unusual for some of you. However, when the temp is 93 and the humidity makes it 105 then it is waaaaay sweaty hotter than just 105. The August motto is "It ain't so much the heat as it is the humidity" And we have a birthday party for our 1 year old grand daughter, the only girl we have, at noon and it's outside. Shouldn't last long.

That's pretty warm all right. Be thankful you're not here. Heat index reading for today is supposed to be 115.

Mornin everybody. Large mug of coffee please. Late night last night. Pretty busy at the restaurant at least it wasn't Pure Pizza H*** night.

Jeff- I hope the operation goes well. Maybe you should stock up on few kits this month to hold you over while you're recouping. I would imagine you'd have to stay off the foot for a bit or at least take it easy. Speaking of which, the garage is shaping up.

Tom- Sounds like you had a not so great day of failures. At least you were able to get what you need for the Challenger.

As I was clearing the "wreck" from the turnout. I once again tried to run the cars over and over through the turnout and as usual, flawless. I guess I just can't be looking for it to happen. Oh well, that turnout is a thing of the past soon anyway. Possibly as early as this weekend or even today. I'm replacing with another Atlas. They really have served me well for years. If these last as long before giving problem I'll be very happy

John- Yeah it was me. You are correct about the eye filling in (sshh! Don't tell the guys at MTW that.) I never noticed the railing issue non-issue. Knowing you are iNvisible scale, if you said you had motorized the gate you were going to get about 6 of these.Shock

Vincent- A sixth finger would be cool. Nice stuff.

Bon Soir- Sign - Welcome to the diner! Sounds like you had a good day at the LHS and you are right, you always seem to get more than you went in for. (smack) What was that for Flo? (whisper, whisper) Oh, yeah, ha ha. (ahem)I knew that. Yeah, I happen to speak fluent French, so I knew that.

I thought about the list or impulse buyer thread at Hammer's yesterday as a guy was pouring over the stuff going from one aisle and back (as I usually do too) saying, "I really need to bring a list" I chuckled and said "I make one out all the time and it's laying right where I left it at home."

Tom Wright- The wife and I have often talked of one day trips. Lot's of people who do them, enjoy them as you have said. Unfortunately we still haven't gotten around to it. (he he, there's that word gotten again. You notice how some people can just find way to get that word in a sentence.)

Robby- Hopefully you will be at the Hospital to get the wife out by the time I get this posted. Sounds like things went well and I'm glad. I agree a wad of Wal-Mart flowers will do wonders. Also looks like you and I have the same plans for a while. Looking forward to progress pics from you. I hope to do the same. I'll use it as a double plus, get some tips and work on my digital camera skills. The latter of which is probably hopeless, but I'm not in a photo contest anyway. Though it is nice to see the guys clear photos instead of the poor ones I put out.

Gotta get cleaned up so I can go sweat. The first sweat isn't bad and sometimes the second sweat ain't real aweful, but the third sweat can just about run off a skunk.

Have a Great Day!! Adios all. (see I told you I speak French)

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have the #2 special, over easy on the eggs, bacon, and a double order of sourdough toast if you please and my usual dark roast Java in a R&GV Mug.  Thank you, I'll be at the Rivet Counter.

Nice cool, sunny day here in the Finger Lakes.  Currently 69°F with a high around 78°F.  Right now the air conditioners are still off and the windows are open.  I'll have to reverse that in a couple of hours as it is already getting warn inside the house......

Today is panic day for the NMRA Picnic tomorrow.  I have to get all the little things done that I have been putting off, like a sign in sheet for the members and guests,  A few signs that say something like "Don't even think about touching the models!"  And making sure that everyone who has said they would help with things is ready and remembers.  I will also have to get most everything needed packed into the car this evening.  Looks like we will have to go to plan B for where to put the grill as Thunderboomers are predicted for tomorrow.  Lucky the picnic is inside the New York Museum of Transportation and there lots of places to get inside down the line at the R&GV Museum as well.

Time to get started I think, so I will see yu all later!  Hope you have a wonderful day!

Morning everybody,

Yesterday the wife and I drove up to Conneaut, Ohio to visit a little railroad museum there for the first time. It turned out to be an interesting place with lots of very old photos, lanterns, timetables, etc. Even an HO layout for kids of all ages. Outside they have a Nickel Plate Berkshire and a Bessemer & Lake Erie hopper and caboose. The museum building is the old New York Central station.

Right behind the museum is a CSX two track line which is pretty busy. In two hours we saw about 6 or 7 trains. we got a couple of folding chairs out of the car and just sat in the shade of an old tree to watch the world and CSX go by for a couple of hours. Norfolk Southern has a track about 2 blocks south where we saw or heard 3 trains. I really enjoyed catching CSX because I usually watch Norfolk Southern at home. As it's only a little over two hours from Pittsburgh, I will definately be going back.

Lake Erie is only about 10 minutes north of the museum, so we drove up to see the lake. Besides a very nice beach, we found a great park. The park was very well maintained (one of the best I've seen) with picnic tables, grills, playgrounds for the kids and other amenities. A nice place for a family outing.

We have been having a great time taking these little one day trips (usually railroad related, but the wife doesn't mind). We are finding so many interesting things that we have missed over the years. Oh well, better late than never.

Everyone have a nice weekend and stay safe.

Tom

Morning all,

A coffee, cream and sugar, please. Add an order of  corn muffin to that

An absolute perfect day here. May take a ride up to Rockport (MA).

My daughter, April, is in Indianapolis for the finals for the "drum corps", they are in second place so far. She is Colorguard, they have been running in 1st so far. Once she gets back next week, I will move her into a house she rents w/ 3 other girls. This will be her 3rd year out at UMASS, Amhearst.

Scenery and layout work has gone in high gear lately with all the new guys. Hope to post some new pics on the progress.

I posted the youtube links back on page 16. Apparantly the club website is under renovation and they weren't working properly. Here is one in particular if you don't want to search back.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phSML0Ntdr4 The film maker is the CSX fanatic as you will note.

Robby, my continued prayers for your wife, sorry to hear about these developments. My wishes for a speedy recovery.

 Good morning.

It's 74 and sunny. The high will be around 93 and there's a chance of rain.

My foot surgery is tentatively for a month from today. Hopefully this will eliminate some of the problems I'm having. On the MR front I'm slowly building up some new buildings to replace some of the older toylike looking buildings that are on the layout at present. I hope to get started on the new backdrop sometime this month. My order of scenery backdrop aids shipped from Walther's yesterday and is on it's way via priority mail.

Good morning.  Thats for all of the thought and prayers!!

I believe the wife might get out around 10:00 am or so.  Visting hours aren't till 9:00am.   The only good thing is that the parking garage is $2 all day.  You can't find it that cheap anywhere.

The plan today is...........Probably take apart the oneside of the layout, and maybe a trip to Lowes.  That will give me something to do today, oh and I have to cut grass again Grumpy.

Hope everybody has a good day, and I will be back in later.

Good Morning All,

Up at 4 this morning to make the run to Bradley Airport and the CFO is on her way to the Senior Tournament in Santa Cruz (not San Diego as I said before - that would be my own senior moment).  I have a couple of people showing up at the shop this morning so I'll do some finish stripping on some of the interior columns for the house while I wait. Nice and quiet at the shop with no one else here. Later I'll go back to the house and continue stripping the staircase - the only piece along with the columns that survived the rebuild. Plumbings done, walls and ceilings painted, floorings in and windows and doors done. Waiting on the electrical and then the heating system to be finished and they are threatening to deliver the counter top for the kitchen next week. Once that's done we can go for the C.O. finallyThumbs Up. Thanks for asking Bob.

Jeff - hope the surgery goes well. I got a real lesson this year on how important a usable pair of feet are. I also have an appreciation for how tough it is to get them to heal up as I'm borderline diabetic and the diuretics they have me on complicate things even more. Anyway, good luck.

Robby - sorry to hear about your continuing problems. perhaps some flowers are in order when the missus gets home? Even a small arrangement can do wonders for the old mood.

Ray - I hate it when I do that. Glad you've nearly finished the repair. Gotta be careful with the inanimate objects though - my friend broke his hand punching a door that turned out to be solid.

Der - I love the fence and gate. Ditto Chris' comment above.

Sawyer and Joe - I never minded hangin at the beach. In fact I spent two full summers there 6 days a week as a life guard. And no, I'm not one of the ones that was sleeping on the job. Don't understand how you can do that with all those cute chicks around anyway Big Smile.

Coffee is all done so time to hit it. Catch y'all later, J.R.

Good evening, Zoe? a big RBF please 'n thank you....yep, at the RC.

Well RAY, you're not the only victim today... I took a break from re-arranging my home office to hit the 41' CNW gon with another blast of Dullcote...or so I thought. I forgot a basic tenet of paramedicine: confirm the drug before administering it. Turns out, I grabbed a can of GLOSSCOTE instead. Banged Head Yep, the nice grungy, rusty, rolling RR dumpster is now shining like it just rolled out of the Clinton paint shop. Banged Head I remember thinking the can seemed to a) have more in it than the last time, and b) was spraying a lot better (1st coat of Dullcote was sputtering...nearly empty can). *sigh* Not as dramatic as nearly destroying a coaling tower, I know...but, crap happens.

Der John: I can't begin to fathom HOW you create, what you create, in N-sane scale! Bow. Incredible.

ROBBY P: Very sorry to hear of the latest complication... hope she's doing as well as possible.

SAWYER and others: "Beach?" What's that??? All I've got around here is field upon field of corn or soybeans. Beach? Huh...

TODD: I was gonna say something about something you said earlier, but must've lost that though somewhere along the way. Oh well.

Best thoughts and wishes to all those in need, regardless of the need...

Have a good night,

ChrisEight Ball

Good evening to all, just stopped by for a nightcap, I see most of the Diners have left for the night, DUKE is in the corner table sleeping, and Fergie is in the back painting another (pink) car!

Got to the LHS this past Wednesday, and of course you can't walk out with just what you came for. He had two new U18B's, one was a P&W and the other was a Maine Central. I picked up the MEC as this will fit well with the present layout theme. I also picked up some paint for weathering the truss bridge, and two cars, a B&M 2 bay hopper from Kadee, and an Athearn Sargento Cheese box car.

Prayers to all who are in need.

Bon Soir,

I ain't been in here in a while, best start to catch up.

Sawyer, wait until you live on a beach for 13 years. It gets old; really old.

Jeff, hope that surgery works out for you.

I went to register for the fall semester earlier this week. Best part is I only have 6 more classes unitl I get my degree, and no more general education classes!!! (I can get my degree before I turn 21!!)

The other day I noticed a bump on my right hand where the ring finger goes in to the hand. There isn't such a thing on the other hand, and it feels like it might be bone. Wonder if I damaged my hand and broke something or it's an unusual growth. Maybe it's the start of what would have became a 6th finger...... It's not hurting or affecting anything, I'm just curious as to what it is. Besides I have a more pressing matter than a bump, I only have 20 days left of being a teenager!!! I should probably go and live it up for a few days...

I got some new stuff recently:

A BLI NW2 with sound and DCC.

Some cars that came with it.

I'm not changing roads or eras, I just happened to get a good deal on the NW2. I may end up repainting it for BN if I can't find a BN to swap it for it.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Evening all. Janie, I'll take a RBF, thanks.

John- That's quite the load there!
Corey- Hope your wife gets that job.
Phillip- Right you are!
Sawyer- That's nothing! I spend the entire summer down here, with absoutely no trains! I can't get enought of the beach. I get tired of the beach towards the middle/end of August (pretty soon), and then I'm ready to go back up north and see friends and stuff. And now that I'm in HS, I actually kinda look forward to school. I just wish I had a layout down here. Maybe next year, I could build a diorama or something to fulfill my needs...
Jeff- Good luck with getting that surgery scheduled!

My mom's calling (Ugh...), so I'll finish catching up later. Peace.

A quick night-cap again please - can't stay too long. glad you liked the start of the fence at the port. Because it's N, and because it strikes me that much of what we do in scenery is to create an impression the viewer filling in the details from their experience; I cut a lot of corners on the construction. The top rail should be aligned with the posts, but because there are those razor wire carrying projections on the posts, to do that alignment meant cutting over 85 separate pieces of top rail and gluing them all perfectly straight at 9 scale feet from the ground. That I was not prepared to do! So I glued the top rail behind the posts Shock That means the mesh doesn't touch the top rail evenly, or is not glued to it al all!  the eye really does fill in - it's quite remarkable. Oh, is that my night-cap, I'd better take that and join Ray at the Rivet Counter! Whistling

Someone (Barry?) asked about the gate, was it motorized?  I've considered how to animate it to open and close, but for now it's manual. If you meant is the imaginary prototype motorized, yes indeed. Here's the inside look, and the motor truck is at the base of the rear end. It would have rubber tires, and the power pick up I envision as shoes on a rail, probably covered in some way either side of a steel and concrete rail that would also keepthe gate running true forward and back. The front truck sticks out in front of the gate, and docks with the concrete post WHICH (Todd Wink) acts as a stop and lock.

I have totally lucked out!  As a start towards repalcing the card mock-ups of the buildings which act as a tunnel to hide a portion of  my upper level return loop with plastic models, I am accumulating kits. One such I got on the Bay as a fire-damaged (aka pre-weatherd!) Model Power 6 storey appartment building. The thing came about 3 weeks ago, no box and added charcoal! I needed the width to match my mockup, and here's how it worked out.

The dentist was a doddle, over in 10 minutes with an expert high tech repair to a chipped incisor. Back home by 4:p.m. (No LHS this time, just did that) We were in Dartmouth, but worked a route that avoided Cole Harbour Place and the 80,000 adoring Sydney Crosby fans worshiping the Stanley Cup!

Time for bed, Prayers continuing for all in need of healing, comfort and peace. May I say, as a retired pastor, that the level of care and sound counsel available in this Diner is staggering! Thank you, on behalf of all to whom you minister.AngelBow

Evenin' folks!

Ray:  I didn't know you had a Topside, buddy.  I love mine, but the only thing I wish is that the top was somehow adjustable up and down.  I've caught a few trees up on the peaks with mine rolling it around the layout, but never a coaling tower.  OUCH!   But as you said, you didn't like the steps on part of it, anyway.  Even though that's not the happiest of excuses to rebuild them.  BTW, Spooky sends best regards to Manet.  She thinks he's a Major Hunk.  Uff-Dah wants to know if Manet is interested in joining his hockey team.

Had it for a couple years now.  Very usefull for reaching those areas of the layout 4 foot back from the aisle........  I have no one to blame but myself for the accident.  I know the top of the thing will hit the coaling tower. Even thought about it as I started to move it.  Got so caught up in getting the bottom of the contraption around the legs of the layout and down the ailse, that by the time I started to look up I ramed right into the tower.   This is the third time that I have damaged it while using the creeper.  usually I reach out without thinking to grab some tool or steady myself to rerach a back item and knock the tower over with my hand.......

I showed ManĂ©t a photo of Spooky some time ago.....  Maybe that's why he is always sitting here watching what I'm doing. Whistling   Oh and he would love to join the Hockey team, but only if his little brother can pay too.  ManĂ©t weighed in at 20lbs at the vets Wednesday and his "little brother" now tips the scales at 19lbs.

Hope you get that Challenger back up and running soon!

Barry, Yes I did throw a serious fit over being that stupid... I got over it and have almost got the damage repaired.  Replaced one railing with a short piece of scale wood.  Tomorrow i will see if i have a matching paint to blend it in with the plastic.

Jeffrey, now I remember you talking about that problem some time ago.  Hope the surgery will correct the situation and allow you to get that foot healed up!

Zoe, I think I'll have a Hot Fudge Sundae over at the Rivet Counter.  Don't give any grief about my diet, this is not a good time, and yes I know Vinnie is sitting over there in the booth.........

Have to get to w**k on a Powerpoint Slide Show that I may use on Sunday.

Gary, small world huh?  A lake around Mankato in the country sounds about right.  Lakes and fields, that's all there is when you get out of the river valley.Smile

Bob K. , the trestle is installed and waiting for details.  I still need to add the water to the river and trees for the area. I need to do the highway as well, but that can wait.  Right now the trains can cross so that's it until later.  I'm working on fleshing out 'Mankato' with building kits while it's still warm enough to paint outside.  Once it's too cold to paint I'll return to the trestle area.  I'm glad to hear that things are going well with your lady friend.Thumbs Up

Jeff:  Hope they can get the foot problem stabilized soon.  BTW, that's a nice 'haul' you made at the hobby shop in Alexandria!

I hope so too. I've been fighting with that thing for years. I got lucky on the DPM Seymour Block kit. It was the last one Hobby Lobby had in stock. They had plenty of the others.

YAYY!!! ---I'm off!!! HeeHeeHee!!!Tongue

I spent today having meetings with my new supervisor and had a good lunch--on the boss no less--then spent the rest of the afternoon getting stuff shuntled around from cubicular cube to a real office---one that allows me to shut the door when I'm trying to do up reports. I went with Audrey to a little dessert place and splurged on a chocolate/pecan cheesecake and a Chocolate Raspberry Coffee (so there)

Todd: The job doesn't really have an increase in the workload as such--the type of work is different though and that means another learning curve for me--Whistling I'll probs have a few of Ray's grumble snort days though---

BobK: Yeah, I have a  friend up near Oxtongue Lake--near Algonquin Park--that we'll be visiting for a couple of weeks and th rest of the time will be in our own area doing daytrips---much like the industrial archeological thing we're doing tomorrow--Whistling

Ray: I was wondering why the sky was looking a little purple/blue and greenish that way. And those sounds--OIShock One of the fellows that is helping on the kids layout did a number on his grain elevator with one of those dang things! Took out the whole thing with it----We made a rule that a spotter be with him at all times if he's anywhere near the thing the next time---he has damaged a few things on the layout that wayDead

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I'm going to clear out the card in the camera tonight as we're getting ready to go to St. Thomas to see about getting some pix down in that direction. I'm never too sure how many shots that card is holding as we go and delete and then pile up a whole wack more on this thing--Tongue It's a good little cameraWhistling

Chloe, I'll just have a large RBF for now---I'll be at the RC--

Afternoon all from SunnyCal:  Temperature's about 3 degrees higher today than yesterday, which puts it in the low '80's.  We didn't get any thunderstorms, but the northern part of the valley and the Sierra got some nice rain out of it.  And believe it or not, it was SNOWING up near Donner Peak for a while.  Hello?  AUGUST??Shock

Jeff:  Hope they can get the foot problem stabilized soon.  BTW, that's a nice 'haul' you made at the hobby shop in Alexandria!

Sawyer:  Hey, I hear you.  A week at the beach (with or without a MR) is too much for me, too.  I start growing fins and gills, LOL!  Tongue

Bob:  Thanks for the comments on the photo.  And yes, that Heritage is a surprising lokie--I've said before I'm not into Proto at all because of their lack of pulling power, but this little baby will take off with anything you want to put behind her.  And no traction tires!  She's a keeper. Thumbs Up

Robby:  Sorry about the further complications with your wife.  She's on my prayer list.

Well, had an interesting day, yesterday.  My older Westside Challenger (photo in WPF this week) was pulling a priority freight and just gave up the ghost.  Boom.  Just like that.  After about 35 years, the old open frame motor just went to the Great Beyond.  And then to top it off, all of my code 83 Sinohara/Walthers turnouts in my main yard lead went kablooey.  Which left me with several locos in the yard and no way to get them onto the main.  Tried everything.  Finally said the heck with it.  Went down to Bruce's to ask Dave what I should do.  "Machines or manual?"  Dave asked.  "Manual"  "Get some Tortoises"  "Can't, it's foam.  No place to mount them."  "Hmm," and Dave went into his Thinker Pose.  Then, a bright smile on his face, "Peco's." "That's a river in Texas,"  I stared at him.  "No, PECO's.  Turnouts.  They're foolproof."  Dawned on me.  I HAVE a couple of Peco turnouts on my code 100 main.  They ARE foolproof.  So, left the shop with four Peco #5 RH turnouts.   "Oh yah, need a replacement can for a Pittman DC-70."  Dave slumped.  "NWSL.  Can't get anything right now."  Sigh.  Sigh

Then I remembered.  Mike, at Roseville Hobbies had a bunch of NWSL motors.  Drove over there.  Picked up the replacement.

SO:  Right now, I have a torn-up yard in the garage and a Challenger in parts on the kitchen table.  Can't decide what to do first.  Probably the yard.  I mean, there's this big empty space between the main and the engine terminal, right?  And those cars in the yard can't go anywhere, either.  Aqnyone need four in-fairly-good-shape Walthers/Sinohara #5 RH turnouts with a little ballast clinging to them, LOL?  That really only work 'foolproof' with Tortise switch machines?

Anyhow, that's my weekend project.  Spooky and Uff-Dah will help with the locomotive (even though Challengers aren't really their cup of tea), but the yard relaying should be interesting.  Kind of like Ray's Topside Creeper/Coaling Tower incident.  Hopefully for BOTH of us, what emerges will be an improvement.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Jeffrey, you mention surgery.  What do they plan to do to help you?

There are two bones in my right foot that are causing me some major problems. They'll be removing part of those two bones to ease the pressure on the bottom of my foot.

Evenin; folks!

OK, my blood pressure has returned to normal (I think).  Todd, I don't doubt that you could hear the thunder all the way to where you are.....  I was not a happy man.  I got some of it put back together right after I had the disaster, and will get back to it later this evening for a bit.  In hindsight, there were a few problems with the staircase any way involving some pieces that didn't fit right, so I may end up with a better model.  Who knows.....

Ray: Remember, you can't use that "rub" on the Chiwawa

Not any meat on that little thing anyway...... It's mostly hair!  Here is a photo if my son holding the dog:

On the other hand, this is me with my "little" kittie Manét:

Robby, prayers that all goes well for your wife.  Tough time!

See you all later!

I got the DPM Schultz's Garage kit done with a little twist. I wanted it to look more like a city building so I cut the front and rear down slightly and installed a flat roof. It still needs a couple vents on the roof and a rooftop AC unit but it's done for the most part. Now I'm starting on the DPM Seymour Block kit.
