I would expect that the barn was there long before the road was - at least in the road's current form)

Had to check with someone that we know up there--turns out the alignment would have brought the barn about 6' from it in its entire length. There is a mural on its long edge of an ear of corn. That pix was scrubbed b/c a dang truck went and messed it up!

And that bunch of buildings is just crying out for a semi-blinking (maybe with a letter out on it) neon sign saying: "Freeway-to-Nowhere Mall" on it... Black Eye Looks like somebody (as I think it was Todd said:) 'repurposed' an old viaduct...

Nope. All due to weird angle of the view we had from there----now, if'n I figgered out how I was going to get up to this wonderful bridge

then the view would've been better!! Actually the bridge that was 'repurposed' is actually what gets into downtown Paris ON. The mess of buildings is actually the backside of the buildings facing the main street---I've a bunch of film pix that I'm in the process of scanning into the 'pooter so I'll eventually have 'em all upWhistling

I've been spending the last bit scanning--or rather learning toWhistling--some old pictures of mine into the 'pooter---some of these will end up in photobucket then here. The humidity has been sitting at or just a little above 80% all day---we reached 33C and got at one time a humidex of 46C------sheeeesh. There were a couple of dribbler showers that came through but not much else---

Flo, I'll have a bowl of chocolate/caramel ice cream and a large RBF please---I'll be at the RC as well---

Afternoon, Flo - I'll have a grilled cheese sandwich, bowl of tomato soup, and a RBF, please 'n' thanks! Got some more catching up to do from yesterday (and whatever else the crew has piled on while I've been gone...).

Barry, I think that barn and those cars would be very appealing to Robby - with that one boxcar maybe being a little challenge even for him. Wink I would expect that the barn was there long before the road was - at least in the road's current form). And that bunch of buildings is just crying out for a semi-blinking (maybe with a letter out on it) neon sign saying: "Freeway-to-Nowhere Mall" on it... Black Eye Looks like somebody (as I think it was Todd said:) 'repurposed' an old viaduct...

Robby, looks like you're on your way to the New-and-Improved RR there. Got any sketch/drawing of what you have in mind once you get the benchwork relocated and revised? The extra room should be helpful - and won't feel as crowded, with the extra space in the middle. Of course, you might find out - as one of our MRR club members did when he got his layout "finished" that he had a hankering to extend an industrial area out into some of the big ol' center space... Oh, on the weathering? Don't worry, I will be contacting you when I get to using those new brushes, and I have saved several files and photos of your work for future reference. Yeah!!Thumbs Up

Lee - I understand you're having an invasion of Germans at your layout? Wink What all have you been doing on the layout lately?

Rob, that sounds like a good idea about working on the wife's layout (make all your learning mistakes on the wife's layout first, and then yours will look that much better...) (Shhhh... don't let her hear me saying that...). Hope your tests do find out that most of your difficulties can be corrected so easily (and inexpensively). AngelAngel

Jerry, Oops OUCH!! That had to hurt big-time! Hope it gets healed up well (and SOON).

Calif.Tom - (or should I call you "Scarlett"?) sorry to hear that your weather is reverting to its (usual) true form. Sigh And sounds like the Challenger's(?) feedwater heater moved Uff-Dah along better than a "cat prod" would've. Smile,Wink, & Grin (ONLY KIDDING, any ASPCA-types peeking in the window). Guess Uff-Dah didn't have his battle helmet on when he was poking around the heater, eh? Wink

Ray - EXCELLENT scenery (and building) work there in WPF! On your one photo, I'm guessing that the ballast jar and cup are up in the tree line, right? Or else you did an even better job with PhotoShop than you did on the scenery and buildings...Wink  I'm gonna save the scene with the bandshell and buildings for later use; I like your variations on the bricks - they had that back in the '20's? Cool!

Today, I was finishing up the hole for my Kadee delayed uncoupler (magnet), and when I got done, I was like you, Tom. Looked at all the 'little' gaps in the track pieces, thought about fiddling with them, and decided that tomorrow would do just fine! I really need to go through, close all the gaps in the track, pull all the Atlas insulated joiners (since I'll be going with DCC from the start, now) and put regular ones in, and check track gauge very carefully. Hmmm,... have I been sitting at the RC too many times?Whistling

I started going through some boxes and tubs of MRR stuff earlier this afternoon, and was pleasantly surprised at the variety (and quantity, so long as I don't think of how much I've probably put into them) of assorted detail and nick-nackery items I have accumulated. Looked in another box, and found some bags of foliage and of ballast that I'd forgotten I had. Not sure if I'll use them as ballast, or maybe have some gravel road/parking lot somewhere. Decisions, decisions! I did find some items I had been thinking about ordering, so now I don't have to get those. Yeah!! (Save that money... for other MRR ideas and projects later, anyway).

I'll be at the RC, checking out that 'catapult' to see if it's really prototypical for catapults...EvilPirate

Blessings and prayers,

Went to Lowes and got the wood I need.  Got two 4x8 sheets, and some 2x4's, and some 2x2's.  The layout is going from a 8x12 to a 12x12.  The inside will be opened up more than it was.  I'm happy about that.  Now I can get some ideas of what I want done.

Got my sister's yard mowed and now it sounds like a storm is moving in. The Seymour Block building is almost done. I just have to put the roof on.

Mornin' everyone!

Just poping in to get some coffee to go...  Have to be on the road in just a couple minutes.

Nice day here in the Finger Lakes.  Damp, muggy, with predicted thunder storms............  Oh well we can and will be inside most of the time anyway.  Wonder where my co-conspiriter for the day is going to set up the grill?

Tom, thanks for the comments.  I figure the most inportant person I have to please is me.  Since that is almost impossible, I shouldn't have a lot of trouble with the judges.......Whistling

OK, thanks for the coffee, Flo.  I gotta run!

Later!

Its going to be a hot one today.  It will be the first time we have seen 90!!  Might have to put the window unit in!!

Well I worked on the layout for a few hours yesterday.  Wondering to go to Lowes or not today.  Not to much planned thou.  Just dreading the "juror" duty tomorrow.  I HOPE I don't get picked.

Barry.....Great shots, I like the "very rusted" boxcar.

Tom....Its one of of those thoughts "why did I add/do this, if I am going to do something different to the layout????"   Just thinking of the money wasted, time put into it.  Once this is done, ITS DONE!!  Well the expanding part.  Plus the wife came down stairs and was Shock.

Jeff.......The buildijng is really coming along.

Jim......If you need some tips on the weathering just let me know.

Well I guess I better go get some breakfast.

I will pop back in later.

 Good morning.

It's 74 and partly cloudy.  The high today will be around the mid 90's and there's a chance of rain.

I took the time yesterday to glue together the walls of the Seymour Block. While I was at it I decided to add to the red and green decor. I added a little yellow and some terra cotta and just a splash of brown. I still have to add the entry door and the roof. I also pre-painted the 'Skip's Chicken & Ribs' and the 'Robert's Dry Goods' kits. The ribs joint is painted yellow with green trim and the dry goods kit is red with terra cotta. I also worked on the Walther's REA Reefer. The base color on it must be green as I couldn't get it stripped back to any other color. I did get the lettering and graphics off it though and I cut the ladders down to modern height with the exception of the one up to the brake wheel. I also removed the roofwalk. The next project will be to remove the plug doors and replace them with regular sliding doors. I might get to mow my sister's yard today depending on the weather. If it rains all bets are off.

Jeff, are those Detail Associates backdrops in color? They sure look impressive, all right.

I'll let you know when I get them. I don't think they'd sell many if they were B&W.

Evening all from WhatNextCal?   Yesterday was 82 for a high, today was 92 for a high and tomorrow is scheduled for about 102 or thereabouts.  That neat little low pressure off the coast went traveling--FAST!--up to Idaho, and we're left with what passes for 'normal' around here for August.  Whoopee! Whistling

Played Vesper Mass this evening.  Feast of St. Clare.  She's one of my all-time favorite ladies, a 20th-Century Thinker in a 12th Century setting.  Unfortunately, whoever chose the music (and it wasn't me) for her Feast Mass somehow chose at least three pieces that I HATE playing.  Of course, being a professional musician, you HAVE to give everything equal value.  But what it adds up to is that when you play music you like a lot, it's Enervating.  When you have to play music you DON'T like, and play it as if you loved the Heck out of it, it's just Bloody Exhausting.  Tonight kinda/sorta did me in.  It's times like this when you're thankful that you're playing for God and not Critics, LOL!  Tongue

Came home, looked at the almost-relaid yard in the garage, then at the Challenger on the kitchen table and decided the Heck with it.  Tomorrow is another day, LOL!    Yard will get the last piece of track in, and Challenger will get re-motored (plus some additional Tomar pickups).

Jim:  Not worried about Uff-Dah and the Challenger in parts on the kitchen table.  It's only three parts to begin with--boiler, and two mechanisms, but he's staying away from it.  I think he bumped his little Norwegian head on that 'eyebrow' Elesco feedwater heater when he was sniffing it, LOL!

Chris:  I won't tell you how many times I've accidentally Glosscoted a model when I've reached for the Dullcote.  Just make sure you've got the Dullcote this time, whack it again, and it should look okay.  I'll bet you that the weathering is still there and the additional coat will bring it out again.

Robby:  OUCH!!!! Shock  If you're like me, that first cut into the layout must have really HURT!   But I can assure you, that the rest of it  becomes easier, as you re-adjust things.  The initial shock wears off and the sense of 'improvement' takes over.  Believe me, I know.

Ray:  Just saw your photos on WPF.  All I can say is OHMYGAW!   That's some absolutely GORGEOUS scenery you're doing.  I sure hope you get your NMRA certification.  If you don't, then THEY'VE got the problem, not you.  Just beautiful.  Oh, and PS:  Uff-Dah says that Manet's little bro sounds like a good Goalie.  How is he on skates?  Tongue

Nik:  Sounds like a MAJOR leak in your area.  Hope everything is okay.

Well, that's it from SunnyCal tonight.  DEFINITELY going to finish the yard up tomorrow.  That new Proto Mallet of mine is still in the engine facility with noplace to go.  Getting IMPATIENT!

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Oh wow, looks like I just either bought late dinner or tomorrow's breakfast.  Go for it.

Evening all,

Tonight I poured the second coat of “water” in Fox Creek.  I’m using a product from PARKS; a two part clear coat, each pour is equivalent to 60 coats of polyurethane. Application is easy all you have to do is pour it in the area and it’s self leveling, takes about 20 hours to dry. If you walk buy it you would swear water is sitting in the creek.

Last week I ordered 67 Germans for the layout; not really all Germans but the Preiser Pedestrians and the Passer by’s (# 14402 and 14412) were on sale this week, so I have a bit of gluing to get done.  Today I got the first pay check for the new job so I thought I’d celebrate a little bit;  I picked up the Walther’s Hewlett un-loader, a 50’ DT&I round roof AUTO box car (BLT37), and a PRR 50’ single sheath 50’ box car (BLT47).  My LHS had BOB’s news stand marked almost 50% off so I grabbed that as well.

A sub sandwich and then some Chocolate cake, please & thanks. (I won't be eating this stuff anymore after next weeks blood test, so I'm making the most of it)

***Nik, you mean you didn't grab a camera and try getting a pic of the leaking car?Whistling Wow, that must have been a shock for those who discovered it. YeeHaw!

***Barry, those are some cool pics!Thumbs Up Can't help but wonder if that boxcar was parked to close to Robby's home.Laugh

***Jim, I'm practically back to square one with the track plan. Still have no idea what I'm doing with it. Thought I had something for a time, then decided I didn't like it again. For the time being, will concentrate on the wife's layout instead.

Now if I could just find my notes from Jeffrey's lesson on "lighting" for structures, then I can finish the wife's hospital. I know it's around here somewhere.Dunce

The young poachers were back, parking only yards away from where some of our horses go to drink. I was going to confront them but my wife talked me out of it and called the proper authorities instead. I know the officer went to investigate, so we'll see if it is quiet for awhile or not. I would still like to set up some hidden video cams around our farm, but those things cost too much.

Hope everyone is doing well.

Good Evening Janie, Flo - I'll have a bowl of broccoli cheddar soup, one of those little whole grain rolls, and a RBF, please. Thank you!

[Memo to self: Remember NOT to skip going by the Diner for more than one day; totally too many posts to catch up on...]

Todd - Gold Creek looks like one nifty town. Thumbs Up I sure hope you can use most of those buildings on the new layout; it'd be a shame to have all those sitting on the shelf or in a box. Ah, I saw your later post that the good town will only be re-organizing itself. That's good!

Jeff, are those Detail Associates backdrops in color? They sure look impressive, all right. Yeah!! Oh, I've thought that the (DPM) Seymour Block building looked like it'd make a fine bank (with the law offices of Dewey, Cheatham & Howe located on the second floor...) And hey, take good care of your foot until the doctor gets the surgery to fix it up ALL right. Don't blame either of you on not being happy with the status quo...

Chris, I like that barn too - saved the photo so I can use that color when I build my Revell Barn kit (the red-orange of the plastic doesn't look like any barn red that I can recall seeing). Evil Oh, and that beach they're referring to is wider than the half-inch or inch of sand that you see alongside a river or creek up your way. Wink Oh, and watch out for the coolade, too. Whistling

Rob, looks like your wife('s layout) is keeping you fairly busy there. What's next on the list for your layout, now?

Barry - so, is the new QC job a promotion or a 'lateral' move for you? And will your paycheck see any change to compensate for all the time that you've spent on THAT report? Wink Good to hear you get a little more room (and a door!).

Robby - thought of you when I stopped by Hobby Lobby yesterday evening (picked up a set of three small brushes - I think they were 2/0, 5/0 and 10/0 sizes). With the discount they had on art materials, the set cost me all of 99 cents plus taxes. I also picked up another can of that 'Brick' red and another (JL Innovative) oil can display rack (those 3-level kinds they used to have out by the pumps in the 'old days'...).Like your newer Ann Arbor boxcar, too. Thumbs Up Wow - just saw about your wife going into the hospital! Good to see that she's out and doing better now. And best wishes on your expansion for the layout.

DerJohn - whose fence did you use there? I know the Walthers HO scale is hard enough to build, and I couldn't imagine doing that in an N scale one...Banged Head Ya did a great job on it, however you built it. Yeah!!

JR, best wishes on your (and your daughter's) holding down things while your CFO's out West having senior fun. Shock May your problems be few in the meantime...

Man, the word I got from the ladies is that Ryan was wolfing down that Southwest Scramble on Friday - almost made Jeff look like he'd lost his appetite, by comparison! Dinner Smile,Wink, & Grin

Corey - I hope your wife gets that job with the optometrists (and even a raise in a few months). I'd guess they wouldn't hold it against her that she knows you; they might even be more likely to hire her, since they'd figure "If she can put up with Corey, getting along with surly customers should be easy for her!" Whistling

Blindfold  Ouch! That hurts about your creeper-coaling tower collision, Ray! Hope you can get things so nobody will notice. Central Valley makes some (plastic) railings and stairways, though I'm not sure whether they'll be the right size/shape for what you need...

Bob K (bogp40) - that's a weird coincidence for you - your daughter's drum corp competition sounds like the same one that my co-worker in crisis (Jason R.) was heading to see this weekend. I'll have to ask him if the 'Citations' did well come Monday when we're back in the office. Yeah, work is... work. Not too bad, though right now the case workers are under pressure (they're our biggest revenue source) to keep up with expectations. So far, crisis is not under much pressure, since 1) we provide a lot of 'free' services for folks who cannot pay, and 2) how do you cut down a two-person team that has to cover walk-in clinic and initial screenings, follow-up appointments, some intake assessments and some outpatient therapy clients (who overlap the group from #1). For a period of time, I was the only one on the team, and everybody remembers how short-handed that left us (try getting to lunch, for example...). Anyway, Jason and I (despite the age differences - he's late 20's or maybe early 30's at best, and I'm a hair above 60...) are both somewhat of mavericks. He just has different taste in music than I do, and has curly hair and some earrings. I'll see about getting/posting a photo of him later this week. Oh, good to hear Linda's still lighting up your life... Smile

Calif.Tom, better be careful about encouraging the Feline Forums - your furry ones and Ray's (and everbody else's) will be logging on at night and plotting who knows what kind of mischief...ShockLaugh And better not leave that Challenger out too long, of Uff-Dah will try to teach himself loco repair and maintenance. Oops

Vincent, that's a really nice haul there - and just in the right era for my layout, in case you ever decide you don't like those... Smile,Wink, & GrinWhistling (just half-kidding there....)

I don't think we were in contention for Jeff's Sweat Bowl today, but it's about 9 p.m., and it's still 82 F, so we might've been a contender if just the temp was all we were counting. Maybe next weekend... Sigh Hey, did anyone else notice that jeff's painting his building Christmas colors (to make it seem a little cooler down his way)? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Nik.n - That's one heckuva way to get yourselves a trip out! Hope nobody your way got much of that breeze, that stuff doesn't smell right in even small doses. Thumbs Down

Well, I'm not all caught up, and it's time for me to head home and backup the hard drive on this laptop. Definitely will be keeping a lot of us Diners (and family members) on the prayer list, for healing, travelling safety (to/from), and comfort. AngelAngel G'night, everybody!

Blessings and prayers,

Thank you Garry!  Yep, that is the one.  Did you find the things that need to be done?  Actually they stand out much better in the high res document which can be blown up a bit.  I haven't painted the replacment board near the top of the stairs, and the "cable" (string) for the coal chutes looks terrible.  I am going to replace it with piano wire bent to shape.

Barry, nice photos.  That boxcar has seen better days.........Whistling

I am heading out to bed a bit early tonight as tomorrow morning will be an early one.  have a great evening!

Good evening..

Barry ... good photos for ideas! .... The boxcar looks like a candidate for Robby.

Nik.... Sounds like a real adventure with the hazardous commodity spill near you.

Ray ....... I like your photos in WPF !!!!! Is that the coaling tower you were talking about?

JohnBoy ....good to see you!

I'm wondering about some of our diners....... Has anyone heard from Paul? I hope his wife, May Ann is doing OK. Kidney disease is not good........ Also, I am worried about our German friend, Ulrich. It sounded like a big crisis he was having, and I hope there is a light at the end of the tunnel for him..... I'm glad Jerry (I think it was you, Jerry) heard from Ed..... I hope Ed finds the time to visit. His Mexican RR photos last year were great.....

While I'm a brilliant guy I haven't yet figured out what I'm supposed to be so brilliant at.

I had one back in the 70's that said 'I'm with STUPID!' and had an arrow pointing to the right.

My late wife and I had that one too.  Or should I say she had that one.  I had to wear the one that said, "Stupid" on it..........Whistling  She thought that was very funny.

Good afternoon, ladies? since nik .n is buyin', I'll take... a large lemonade for here, and a bucket of ice water to-go.

Summer is back, very hot/humid. The only saving grace out there today is a pretty healthy breeze, but it looks to be out of the south. Guess I'm among the mowing brigade around here today. Did the "front" yard this morning when it was only 81 degrees and humid. Will wait a bit more on the "back," like say maybe until around 6:30-7 tonight.

With the re-arrangement of my office nearly complete, Loving Wife is now re-creating her studio. I'm keeping a low profile/staying OUT of the way, lest I get "re-configured" or "re-purposed" in the process!!!

The up-side of it all, is I got a little MRR w**k done, replacing missing end ladders on an RBL boxcar soon to be painted for Fruit Growers Express, but patched to CNW. The CCP caboose sits in primer white, waiting on white putty for final seam w**k before getting red paint. I think I can cobble up enough decals to finish the project. The CNW 41' gondola sits on the photo track, glistening in it's wonderful coat of Glosscote... Banged Head. Next resupply from Walthers will have the proper spray included.

I've decided to take another look at a trackplan, "National Docks Ry." from the 2/07 MR. With a little "flip 'n turn," it looks like a contender for the space I have. It also looks like I'd have several of my "must have's" which include: the "city" yard, Quaker Oats, Cargill (corn plant), and a small yard for the Chicago Central. Where the designer has a double-track dummy main line, I can have the Stickle's Salvage and Feder and Sons junkyard, which includes the ex-Rock Island roundhouse and car shop complex...

Now, when the wife is freed-up, I gotta have her help me to get ACCURATE room measurements.

I might finally be on to something here...

I'm also having a flashback... I've got my iTunes playing currently. I found a bunch of WLS AM 89 (Chicago) jingles. While at school in Morrison, I listened to "The Great AM 89." I also would pick it up on rare occassions in Cedar Rapids. The WLS jingles just ended, and "Cherry Bomb" by John Mellancamp was next up in the rotation. For a moment, It was August 8, 1987; and I was back in my dorm room in Morrison...

Zoe? What did you put IN that lemonade????Whistling

I do have one that says: YIKES!  AND I THOUGHT I WAS SCREWED UP...   As well as one that says: HOW CAN I EXTRACT MYSELF POLITELY FROM THIS CONVERSATION?!  Both are from my favorite store, Dispair.com.  I have worn the first one, but am waiting for the right time to wear the second.  Probably will be to some "important" meeting.........Whistling

I had one back in the 70's that said 'I'm with STUPID!' and had an arrow pointing to the right. It showed up in a school photo one time with our schools science professor standing to my right. What made it funny was that his IQ score was a bit lower than mine and mine is in the upper 180's, quite high. The highest you can score is 200. His was in the 170's, 10 or 12 points below mine. Average intelligence is 110-120 and 70 is considered to be a moron.. The higher you score the smarter you are supposedly. While I'm a brilliant guy I haven't yet figured out what I'm supposed to be so brilliant at.

(Peeks in, sniffs the air, and then walks in)

Milk, Chloe.

Today My family and I was evacuated because a train in the next town over leaked a small (I dont know the scale, we are dealing with trains here, so small can be 100+ gallons. ) amount of Hydro-Chloric Acid (Formaly known as battery acid) on the tracks. The crew found out a car was leaking, stopped the train regulary, (ouch.) walked back, saw what car it was, said "Holy S***, get the hell outta here!," (Scanners are wonderful) called 911 and dispatch, and hightailed it. As usual, the next three towns over bolth ways were evacuated, and the convoy of sleek black Semis and SUV's went down the road. We went to the mall, (Yay) went shopping, (Boo) ate, (good) and went home.

See Yall!

Robby, looks liek you'll have some fun man.

Well, my plan for where to put my switching layout has gone, because that shelf is only 4 foot long. However, this is a blessing in diusguise because I can build a 6 foot long by 1 and a half foot wide switching layout, anhd then later on expand it on my 4x8 to include a yard and a small mainline area (give the yard more purpose, maybe even my freelanced central Aiken yard for SCRail). I would probably expand my 4x8 out another foot or two.

Hi Gang,  It's good to see ya all.

Chloe, I'll have Jerrys favorite , A Cub's dog with a stroll thru the garden and a double RBF. Thanks much....

I just ran across this and thought I should share with you.  Chances are that some have seen it, but the chances are that a lot have not either.

For some reason I can't get the link to work today...

So just go to youtube and punch in Railex   fresh express.

There are two videos and they a really good.  Anyone modelling present day -- here is a winner.  Just similar to the juice train only produce.

Hope you are all having a great week-end. and that the problems seem smaller by this time of the week.

I'm still having siatic nerve problems but with some acupuncture I am controlling the pain and getting some sleep.

Prayers and blessing to all in need.

Love the photos and hope soon to learn that skill as well. So keep them coming.

Philip, how is your son doing? I think of him often.

Ulrich, I think you are going to hard on the RBFs.  You should build up gradually and then you should be able to stay away from the nurses or is that your intent????????????  Stay well friend.

Johnboy out for now.............................
