Mornin' everyone!

A bright but cool morning here in the Finger Lakes.  Currently 64°F with a high of only 71° and lots of sun.  My favorite weather.  Should be a great day for another picnic at a Graduation party.

Flo I have the #2 special this morning.  Over easy on the eggs, bacon, homefries, and a double order of sourdough toast.  Oh and lots of that dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug as well.  I'll be at the Rivet counter telling Barry how to grow corn......... 

I need to do some cleaning today before I head out for the party. May get down to the layout for a bit this evening...  I want to get the light on that Tomar signal wired and working if I can.

 Good morning everybody.  Seems like the sun will be out today, well for the next several days.  Of course we didn't get any rain yesterday.

 I worked on the Ann Arbor car some yesterday.  I might work on it some more today.  Gotta clean up around the house first.

Todd.......The wife is doing much better since her operation.  Now if she could get a better job (a person she works with is still being a pain), she would be even more happier.  I put in for a job the other day for 2nd shift working at a warehouse (ships out food/supplies to grocery stores), and the starting pay is $13.00 a hour.  If I could get something like that, she could go be a sub-teacher.  I hope that place calls. 

 Barry.......Those are the easy one's to do..Plus here's a picture that might help ya.  I got this picture back when I went to visit in NC.

Good morning folks.

It was a beautiful day yesterday. Picture perfect summer day if you ask me. The wife and I went to play a little tennis last night. It was quite a comical sight I'll tell you that!

Today we're going to a Twins/White Sox game at the dome in Minneapolis. We had to go to one more game there before they start using their new outdoor park next year. New park without a retractable roof! What idiots! Haven't they been to Minnesota in April or October? Oh well, I'm sure the new stadium will make the team more competitive.

I learned a little thing yesterday about paint surfaces. Every other time I've spray painted a kit I've used primer as paint. Well, this time I had to use a satin in order to get the color I wanted. When it came time to give the painted kit a black paint and alcohol wash, it didn't turn out too well. The wash spotted as it dried and looks like crap. Now I have to decide what to do about it. I'm thinking of dull coating it and washing it again. These buildings will need to be pretty dirty anyway. We'll see how it turns out.

Has anyone ever taken a ride on the Milwaukee 261?  They have a trip that goes from Minneapolis to Winona in the full Hiawatha passenger train.  Well, then the trip goes down to La Crosse and back, but that is another section that is cheaper and shorter.  I saw that the SP 4449 will be pulling the train this year.  A guest star if you will!  Coach seats are $99 a person for the longer leg.  I think my wife is up for going on another choo choo ride!  You can ride in the sky dome as well, but the tickets are $329 a piece !  I'll take the coach seats instead.  I just thought I'd ask if there were any past riders of this magnificent train.

Good Morning

The t'underin' boomers cleared out last night and then our low went to 8C as of 7am. We're now at 11C. It is going to be sunny this morning then go to a mix of sun/cloud this afternoon. High today will be 22C then go to a low of 7C tonight-----this in July. The high under the sun/cloud mix tomorrow is supposed to be 21C.

Robby: The approach you are talking about is the exact thing that potters do with their own glaze recipies. You will not see too many of 'em saying much about those. And I'm doing more weathering as well---I've a real simple one-----2 hoppers that are used by a quarry---all Limestone----lotsa white dust!!

Got the grass mowed yesterday. I started around 7:30 am and finished before 11 am. Today will be an easier day to deal with (Murphy's gonna jump on me for sure now). I don't really have anything planned for today so I'll probably get some laundry done. My nephew is putting a new engine and transmission in his Jeep. He said he'd have it in by midnight. I'll go by and have a look.

"You won't find many giving tips".   Its kinda like a secret thing.  Even more if the people are trying to make money off the weathering.  I try to help others.  I don't make a "killing" on train cars, plus I rather give advice if it will help.  I know once I start to work, I will start to save these cars for me

Robby-Your humbleness is admirable and your generosity is appreciated more than you know. I truly hope that soon, very soon, you can keep any and all the cars you do for yourself and the cars you sell are just for mad money and because you love to do it. Not to try and pay bills. You haven't mentioned the wife lately, how's she doing?

I actually got to spend some quality time with the layout this afternoon and tonight.  Thing is very time I finish something, I think of 3 things that need to do be done before the layout gets judged........  One of these days I am going to say, "Close enough" and see what happens.  In the mean time I am having fun. 

Looks like we might get another thunder boomer pretty soon.......... 

Tomorrow I get to go to another Graduation Party.  This one is for a young lady from our church who has been very active in musicals in High School.  She was singing in her dad's band by the time she was 8 or 9.  I have done some recording for her father and am friends with the family.  Nice people.  Should be a great party if I know them.......

 Jim.........That's probably it "burnt sienna", if its a orange color.  I'm up stairs, and the oils are in the basement.  I will make sure about the color tomorrow.  When I mix the oils, powders.....I use a drop or two of mineral spirits.  Kinda mix it all up.  The brushes I use are 0/20 to 0/5.  From very thin, to a average size.  I just use the tip of the brush for the pits/gashes.   Is that hopper working out ok????

  I'm glad others think I am improving.  The few that knock me out the water....well one is Aggro.  We talk sometimes by email.  He gives me a lot of tips as well.  I will say this.  "You won't find many giving tips".   Its kinda like a secret thing.  Even more if the people are trying to make money off the weathering.  I try to help others.  I don't make a "killing" on train cars, plus I rather give advice if it will help.  I know once I start to work, I will start to save these cars for me .

Robby, I'm guessing that color would be burnt sienna, right? I only recall (from my undergrad art major days) two 'burnt' colors - burnt sienna and burnt umber, and burnt umber is a very dark brown (hard to tell from black unless you have bright lighting, at times). How small of a brush are you starting with - 000/0 or something else? (Sorry to be a pest with all the questions...) And I'd agree with Todd - I think there'd only be one or two weatherers who could keep ahead of you (if that). I figured it as only a matter of time before we see MR running an article on weathering with your name in the byline.

Lee, that idea on the Medusa Cement sounds about right to me.

I started on another of my structure kits this afternoon. It's the leftmost part of this building, but I'm gonna build it just as a little transfer company:

However, mine is only a bunch of beige plastic at the moment, not so nicely colored as in that photo... I'll see if I can get further along tomorrow and post a photo in the afternoon. I have the dock base together, and the four walls glued together so far. Still need to put those together and start on the roof.  I think Walthers probably stole the design from RDA for the (now built-up) Walthers truck-transfer (kit) building. I moved the Roberts building kitbash to the DR table to see about 'ungluing' the base from it, but I think that may go better tonight or tomorrow afternoon. Also got most of the 'dark' alcohol (originally 91 percent) into containers - a smaller bottle that I'll probably use for the India ink/alcohol wash mix, and the rest in the original bottle the alcohol  came in. Washed out the baking dish and measuring cup (which I used to get it into the smaller bottles).

Rob, good to hear you have a w**king airbrush setup, and even better that you got the tractor linkage w**king also. Particularly for getting into the barn - don't want to be going full speed in there, I'm sure!

Barry, you seem to be getting your fair share (and then some!) of the T-boomers lately. How many days in the past week have you had them, anyway? Good luck with your corn - of course you realize, that if you get going okay with that, next year you'll be adding more veggies and rows, and the next, and before you know it, you'll be applying for farm subsidies! Oh, wait - that's right, you're NOTB, so I guess you're not eligible...

Chris, no problem - I appreciate you covering all that info on the poles (and thanks for the info on the 2-nub telegraph poles, too). (Hey, I can get a bit long-winded from time to time, too, y'know...)

JIM: I take silver/alluminum/metal colored thread and make a half-hitch (I think that's the name for it) at each insulator. With the line "snugged" around the insulator, I put a small drop of an ACC-type glue, let it set, then on to the next. It wasn't as bad as that may sound...I only did it on three poles!  IF/WHEN the layout is ever built, I'll probably go with the Rix brand poles for along the tracks (even though the real pole lines are/were long-gone), and Walther's utility poles for the electric lines.

The Rapido pole line looks OK...but with all the crossarms and lines, it would only look "right" along a very busy main line, and I'm not sure how easy it would be to remove crossarms/lines to customize it. A "plus" for the Atlas poles, they are fairly easy to customize. Shaving off a crossarm (or two) isn't too bad.

Back in the early 90s, I took some Atlas poles and re-made them into shorter poles with two side-pins to represent a late 19th century 2-wire telegraph line. This was for the flood destroyed display layout at Usher's Ferry in Cedar Rapids. A "historical village" imagineered at a long-ago crossing of the Cedar River. They hauled in a section of the MILW depot from Olin, IA. The club I was with at the time was "hired" to model the village in a display layout housed in the depot.

Crimeny! Long answer to short question... Sorry 'bout that!

Thanks for the suggestions guys. I did find an adapter in my Dungeon and hooked up a water trap and airbrush to my noisy, very basic Porter Cable compressor (it comes with a regulator) and "there be air in the air brush". Cool. Would much prefer the one I had specifically for airbrushing, but this one is here and I really don't want to buy a new compressor just do do a handfull of models with. Whew!

Also replaced a pin under the tractor that enables you to shift from high to low. Really needed that one, especially with the need to bring fresh shavings into the barn today. Thankful that is all it was.

The bad news is a used (N) Pacific I recently bought on the-bay arrived today and runs like ^#%*. I let the seller know, so we'll see what he says. It is definately NOT a keeper. Gurrrrr!

Good ol' fashioned T'boomer came along just awhile ago and dumped a monsoon on us. We had 2 good showers as well---and it is supposed to go down to 8C tonight(?). Oh well---

Todd, Ray: This would be the first time that I groweded the corn----at least our own corn----neighbour always supplies us with almost ever't'in' else here. LOL!! Our soil ain't quite the best  so we are just tryin' with a coupla rows for now-----heeheehee

Ray: The current lot of T'boomers and such gave us the fits---the forecasts would say 30% chance and then along comes a monsoon-----east of here---e.g--Woodstock ON had a full slate of 'em today- Oh yes. Also ordered the Jordan kit---and the catalogue----

Spent the day basically doing some small stuff on the HDL then started doing some more of my Purina Mill project----as I got the pieces of railing and staircases for the front part of the complex----I also ordered enough pieces of railings/staircases to start on a Limestone quarry mill of mine own----

Ray- First stop before going to Grocery store was the Farmers Market in Sherman. Best part of summer is the fresh produce. I would plant a garden and I probably will some year but I remember as a kid the weeding and boy I hated that!! That's why so far we just have Gooseberries, Black Raspberries, Blackberries and of course good ole Rhubarb. No weeding. I've already got my yearly feeling of "gee I wish I'd planted a garden this year" after listening to all the people talking about theirs

Robby- I wouldn't say but very, very few weatherers "blow you out of the water" and even those I still would say is a stretch. I do recall your work from just what, 7 or 8 months ago and even then I thought it was pretty good but now.... You're really bringing it to the game. If I was wearing a hat I'd tip it to ya. (odd I'm not wearing a hat. Hmm)

Jeff- I'd never heard of Dragging Canoe and that surprises me after reading about him for a brief bit. I would have thought that he should have been talked about in school at least some. Of course around here all we hear about is Abe Lincoln and Pocohontas. Oh and Michael Jackson.

Rob- Robby's right. But if you already have the regulator and a water trap then yes it should be fine. I already have a larger air compressor in the garage and it has a regulator built on and I have and air drier I'd purchased a long time ago to keep the air impacts from getting too wet. Plus I thought I could paint a car. You notice I've never talked about painting cars?

Bought a couple new cars for the layout; Train-Miniature SWIFT 40’ wood reefer and a 1956 C&O 50’ box car with the Chessie Cat logo in color (ATHEARN #70780)

 Jim........I use a fine tip brush for the pits/rust gashes.  The color of choice is a rust colored powder mixed in with burnt seriea (if thats spelled right).  Its a orangeish color oil paint.  After it dries, I go back with a darker oil for the depth.  You are suppose to go light to dark, but I go the other way.  

 Rob.........I was using a nail gun for my last compressor, but man it was loud!!  By the time you by a "nail gun/whichever compressor", a regulator, a water trap, extra fittings, etc......You could have bought another air brush compressor.

Can't seem to keep up with the posts. Interesting history there, Jeffrey.

Went to start up our old Badger 380-6 silent air compressor and just a quick hum and it clicks off...no compression. Any suggestions? I haven't used it in a long time, but it always ran great in the past. Can a regular compressor (like for nail guns and such) be used with fine model air brushes (providing there is an adapter for such a hookup)???

Looks like I'm not going to get the wife's Diner or spaceship painted anytime soon. Guess I could start assembling her carnival rides or work on the layout(s) some. Just don't want to have too many projects started without completeing something.

Robby - "Gentlemen, you make start your brushes! (Uddun, uddun!! Roar!!!)... And away they go, in a cloud of rust!" Hey, what are you using to make your little 'rust nicks' like on that Railbox, by the way (brush, toothpick, or something else? and what colors)?

Chris, how'd you add the lines to the poles? Ye olde tedious method of gluing a line of thread at a time to each 'insulator'? Or do you have a secret on making that job more bearable? If so, I could sure stand to learn it. I've been debating about the Berkshire Junction (?) wires, or maybe going with the ready-to-go ones that (Roco? whoever?) makes. The latter is more expensive, but I might start saving up - my patience level with certain things can be kinda low...

Garry - I want to learn your secret on transportation. 330 miles going to Cincinnati, but only 300 coming back? Did they move while you were there? From the video, it looks like that black car was zooming along when he passed the SUV. Wow...

CN Charlie, that sounds great on the decoder - I recall you becoming quite frustrated after 'toasting' a couple or so decoders earlier (that was you, wasn't it?). Congrats on getting that w**king, now it'll likely be easier on other ones from here out.

Ulrich - good to hear your project/company might just still come to pass (in whatever form). You could start smaller than you'd wanted, and as things come out of the current MESS (TM) (sorry, Fergie!), you may be able to expand things and grow the company. will continue, and have a cup (of coffee, we won't torment you further with RBF's if you don't hanker after the taste of them). And as for the weathering, remember that even Robby and the other masters at that, weren't that good from their mama's lap - they had to learn. So you're just newer to weathering (as I am), that's all. Keep at it, and in a few months or a year, you may be the one inspiring someone else new to the Diner!

Lee, my cement plant will probably be named something else than Medusa, actually. Not necessarily "Hoffa Cement", but something else...  Yeah, I'm kinda a fan of Art Curren's method of naming industries - that, and naming them after various friends (with some kind of 'inside' joke to the name). Have fun cleaning up those gremlins before your show-and-tell!

Jeff, you stay cool there today - get the mowing done early as possible. That KCS hopper looks good - maybe a little clean for Robby's tastes, but still nice! And your family history looks pretty impressive, from that search (just in Wikipedia's listings of it).

Penn.Tom, that car cruise sounded like fun - I accidentally went by one when I was going to a church retreat a bit back. They were holding it in the parking lot of a burger place (where we stopped for dinner on the way there). Probably not a big and varied as yours, though. Congrats on your new acquisitions for the RR, too!

Man, sounds like our folks east of Missouri are getting hammered from the storm that moved through late last night (but I think it was more north of us for the worst of it). Today it's stopped raining, just muggy and grey, with the occasional peek-through by that yellow round thing in the sky. Back to THAT kind of weather again...

Went by H-L after I got laundry done this a.m., and picked up a can of 'Brick' spray paint, and found they have Dullcote (over with the plastic models and their paints), and also got a DPM Pam's Pets kit with my 40 percent off coupon. But with the humidity, I won't be doing any spray-painting until the air dries out a bunch.

Oh, I started stripping the paint off the C&O gondola yesterday, and found out that 91 percent will even start to dissolve some of the plastic - yikes! At least, it turned the alcohol dark (and the lettering was white!). I'll just use the surface 'etching'(?) as a starter for some possible rust and wornout areas when I get to weathering it. I also ordered some more decals from Champ Decals this morning for my ore cars, gondolas, cabeese and some other cars, and checked over my freight cars that I've already assembled. Found that one Accurail 3-bay hopper needs a little re-gluing of the panel that's over one of the weights (came loose), and I need to reglue some on another Accurail 50' boxcar (weight came loose and the understructure comes loose from the sides...). Minor stuff - just sidelined a couple of cars to the RIP track for now.

I'll go sit at the RC and see what Barry and Ulrich are talking about - oh wait, Ulrich's napping, and I see Barry just got handed some kind of HD list by Flo. Guess Barry's wife must've dropped it off as a... reminder. Well, I'll sit a spell at the RC.

Didn't get in here for breakfast today and I've already had lunch, so I'll just have that RBF that Ulrich didn't want as long as it's all made up already.......

I was just about ready to do a post this morning when I started to hear.... rumble, rumdle, and then BOOM!  So I decided to shut down everything real quick....  By the time the storm had passed, it was time to head out to the State Park here on Seneca Lake for a graduation party.  I just got home and looking at what Barry is sending my way, I decided to cancel going out to camp to play with the speaker system on the roof of the dining hall... Not sure I want to send anyone up on the roof to remove the speakers and act like a Lightning Rod.......

We are under a severe thunderstorm watch for the rest of the day and into the evening here in the Finger Lakes.  May be a good day to get some yard work finished (on the layout... you think I'm some candidate for that Darwin Award thingy???).

Jeffrey Back a decade or so ago I was with my Boy Scout Troop at an international camporee where there was a couple selling Dream Catchers and other Native Crafts.  Seeing the Dream Catchers, I stopped and told several of my Scouts the Legend of the Dream Catcher and its purpose.  The owner of the display came over and listened to me for a bit.  When I had finished, she asked me if I was Sioux.  I told her no but that my step great grandmother was Seneca....  She then told me that the  version I was telling was the Sioux version and that she was Cherokee and asked if I was interested in their version of the Dream Catcher story.  I was so she told me of Grandmother Spider and the rest of it.  I still have the Dream Catcher I bought from her  that day hanging over my bed, and yes it does help me to only follow the good dreams and stay on the true path.  I might just add that she was very easy on the eyes as well...

Barry ought to have no problem growing corn as It grows here in the Finger Lakes magnificently! And he actually lives a little South Of where I live according to the map.   In fact in a few days the first of this years sweet corn should be appearing in farm stands.  I can't wait!  My squash (summer) should start to produce in about 2 weeks.  From that point on I will be living on a diet of local vegies predominatly until we get the first frost sometime in October.

Mornin I think I have a day or two of rest. It's been a pretty hectic couple of weeks. Train room here I come. Oh wait, I have to go to the grocery store. Masking tape, I need masking tape for the roof of the water tower. Better add that to the list.

I guess I better get to practicing or I'll be left in the dust. Looks like the diner is getting' full of you weathering guys. I've already got a mountain to climb. Keep those photos coming. Like pages in a text book. I get more help by looking at pictures in these forums than any book I've bought. ( sorry Kalmbach.)

Jim- If your talking about going to the top of the page you posted to (say bottom of page 5) and it goes to the top of page 5 even if your post goes to the bottom of page 5 or even page 6, yes mine does that, but it always has.

On that wreck,  A shame. Many people paid the price for his or her showing off. Now after seeing the video, we can add the people sitting in the SUV. They had a front row view.

Ulrich- Sounds promising the fingers and toes are cramping but they're still crossed. And I agree with you, I'm not a fan of Accurail couplers either.

Jeff- Any famous Cherokee's we might know or heard of?

Robby- Like I said earlier, the pictures you've been posting really help me a lot to see how it's done. I'm a "need to see it" person. I blow up your photos and try to see what you've done and how. Not to mention they just look awesome. Thanks and keep ‘em coming. Someday for me, someday.

Thanks, Robby P. - for the picture, I saved it on my computer to be used as a reference when I get daring enough to weather my all brand new and self-assembled super box car. I just say that because I am still too to habe another try at weathering...

 Btw, how about writing an article for MR on your weathering techniques - you are really mastering that!
