Mornin' Everyone!

Sir Madog
And you guys are paying 5 bucks a gallon? We pay nearly 34 times more for that stuff. Any questions?

Ah........  I think Jeffrey and others are talking about the artificially maple flavored corn syrup base stuff from MallWart.........Whistling  Actually Pure NYS Maple Syrup and Pure Vermont Maple Syrup Grade A or B right here in Geneva direct from the farms that make it (One is about 3 miles down the road from me) cost $18.99 for a pint.  You can find it on line for up to $40 a Quart. Check out the price of this: Combs Farm Maple Syrup.  Your prices over in Germany are not out of line for the "GOOD" stuff.  People are not comparing the same product.  I only use Maple Syrup (usually grade B or Dark as it has a stronger maple flavor).  A little goes a long way and is the healthiest and tastes so much better than that other stuff!!!

Oh and even the corn syrup with some maple FLAVOR is a bit more than $5 a gallon most places: Pancake Syrup  Don't forget to check out the ingredients......

If fact, Zoe, I'll have a short stack of pancakes this morning and don't forget the Pure NYS Maple Syrup!  Oh and a side of bacon and my dark roast coffee in a FGLK Mug.  Thanks!

I'll be at the Rivet Counter with the other folks.

Oh Garry, while I do have 2 0-5-0s, I only use 1 at a time so it is still just a 0-5-0....Whistling

Lee, thanks for that link. There are 198 jobs within 30 miles, some over 80K+.

Jeff, that hotel looks good.

Ray, isn't maple syrup just boiled maple sap? There are a few maples in the area, maybe I could try making some.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Well you could......  But the maples you have in Florida don't generally make good quality sugar.  There are actually several different types of trees that can be used to make sugar but the quality and flavor will vary greatly.  In the Northeast the most common tree tapped for sap is the Sugar Maple (aptly named....) and you will need slightly more than 10 gallons of 2% sugar-content sap to produce one quart of syrup.  Its a bit involved, and you will need to set up a Sugar Shack out back of your house or provide several large fans to remove the steam from the house and be prepared for some major house cleaning when you get done.  You can read more about the process here: http://ohioline.osu.edu/for-fact/0036.html

Good luck and let us know how you make out with it......WinkWinkWhistling

I knew there is a catch to it...

That 20 $ a pint maple syrup is grade  a stuff - so it is not out of line... No chance for a good business, then! Whistling But maybe a good idea for an industry to model on our layouts...Smile,Wink, & Grin

That 20 $ a pint maple syrup is grade  a stuff - so it is not out of line... No chance for a good business,

Two years ago I found a quart of Medium Amber (Grade A) Day Bros. Farm Maple Syrup in late August at the Mennonite Farm Market I get Vegies from during the summer.  They are just down the road from Day Bros. Farm.  They had it for $24.95 a quart (they must have got the remainder of that years inventory from the farm....).  I grabbed my wallet and bought a jug!  Lasted me a year and a half.  Right now I am using a pint of dark (Grade B) that came from a School Farm (for troubled youths) in the Southern Tier of NY.  It was given to me by my Daughter in Law who works at a different location of the same school near where I live.  I think they get over $14 for a half pint.  But man is it good!  The designation A or B has little to do with the quality of it, but rather the type.  Grade B (dark) actually costs more to produce as it is more concentrated and has a stronger Maple flavor.  Garde A is the Amber colors (light, medium and dark Amber) and has a lighter flavor.

Mornin' I'll have pancakes and Maple syrup please. ???? What do you mean you're out of Maple syrup. Why? Oh you don't know where it went. Hmm Odd. Ok some blueberry syrup then.

Noooot much happened yesterday. Work in the evening and went and visited mom earlier around noon.

Johnboy- The link sent me to a video of an ore car dumpingConfused, But.... I found the video of Dolly Varden Mines and it is spectacular. I love those kind of layouts. Old timey backwoods settings. Love em' I should have done one myself but I didn't think about it when I expanded off of the old "kid layout". I should have, it wouldn't be like I was saving anything. Because I could build one like that yes I could. Uh huh, yep sure could all I need is time and talent and I could build one juuuust like thatWhistling. Thanks for the link.

Say, I still could. Would that be considered changing my mind? Again.

J.R.- I don't blame you on getting someone else for the tree. When it comes to big trees and chainsaws I never let machismo enter the picture. If I ain't sure, I walk away and say , "sorry not for me". As Dirty Harry said in Magnum Force "A man has got to know his limitations."

Jim- I'm with you on the Customs fees and such. Without dealing with it, it just made my head spin (which isn't real hard too do). I think I'll just stick with letting big business import and export.

Robby- I hope the car sells. You're right it is a bit plain for you, but you know, not all cars are rough. There are plenty that look just like this one. Someone may be modeling close to the year and don't need a rust bucket. It still looks great as usual. Good luck.

Garry- (takes big breath, so sit down or skip over) Pearl beer is predominantly a Texas beer anymore, but it didn‘t used to be. It was brewed in San Antonio in what was described as the "Most Beautiful Brewery in the US." It was a major supplier for generic beer to the troops in WWII and brewed the infamous Billy Beer. It used to be very popular up through the 70"s though by then mostly in Texas I believe. Pabst bought them several years ago (how many?) but now it's dwindling down to almost solely eastern Texas and probably less by now and very scattered at that. Too bad, it's very good beer. They say the foam in a glass looked like little pearls (looks like foam to me). They shut the brewery down a few years ago and it's made in Ft Worth now. Hamm's was pretty good also.

I didn't need that car (Hamm's) because it really doesn't fit my scenario but it's my world and I liked the car and I guess if I want it to fit, it will. Of course 3 Pearl cars will probably hold a years worth of that stuff too. To tie this more to RR stuff, the Pearl brewery in San Antonio was serviced by the Texas Transportation company and also serviced Lone Star Brewery (my favorite) for a while. It was a shortline and ran electric locos like this...

There, railroad stuff. No waste of bandwidth. Say maybe that would be a good beerline subject for someone with limited space as the shortline was something like only 2 miles long. 2 breweries and and a mainline connection. If you're interested here's some info.

Rob- A hairball. There has got to be some modeling use for that. Oh I see Robby already thought of one.

Ulrich- maybe you'd like a Pearl. It's a German beer. Oh maybe not, it's pale and served cold.Shock Sorry, we United Statesians just don't know how to drink beer. Laugh

Jeff- Ditto the remarks on the Hotel. And if I want to record, I too use a VCR. (unless on computer)

OK so there's another one. Lee didn't tell us he was having a cheese and a meat tray in advance. And don't try to say we missed the post earlier either! It's already been usedLaugh. Glad to hear the event went well. I bet you are pleased and relieved.

PC- tsk tsk, naughty naughty. But I know what you mean about loosing track of time.

Ray- What, Aunt Jemima isn't real maple syrup? (ducks as a spoon comes flying my way)

Well I best get moving, I got my errands done this morning, the dog now had a Pedicure (just claws clipped but she thinks it's a fancy nail job. Dumb dog.)and we went visiting to show off, now she's tuckered out and it makes me tired looking at her.

Have a Great Day!

(Sticks head back in door) Hey girls, I found the Maple syrup. It's out back. That's weird. I wonder how it got out here? I never noticed it when I came in.Confused

Hey guys, went out for a bit with my mom this morning. We went to the LHS, and I ordered two sets of microscale railroad gothick block white lettering, onme red decal trim sheet, a thing of microsol, and Engine Black paint. we went to Dunkin Donuts and wal=Mart too, then we drove down to the passing siding here, I got a couple pics, then over to where they're rebuilding Aiken's old depot and I got some pics of the caboose and dinning cars. Picvs here:

here's a couple (sorry, it was about noon, and you know how the sunlight is in the summer):

Jeff - the hotel came out great!. The exterior color and weathering looks perfect to me. Are you going to do a view block or floors and interior?

Not really. It's supposed to look ready for demolition by implosion. In a case like that many of the interior walls will have been removed.

I've been tied up all day. First I had to go over to my sister's place to feed her pets. That was at 7:30 this morning. There's 5 dogs, 4 cats and several ferrets. That kept me busy until 7:58. I went down to my parents place and as my father wasn't there (he was out rounding up brake parts for his Mercury Tracer) I rousted my mother out of the bed. She'd lay there all day if we let her. That's not in the recovery plan. I fixed her breakfast then took a few minutes to have a look around online. My father came in and said he needed me to follow him to the repair garage in town so he could drop off his car to be fixed. So he set off in his little Tracer and I followed him in my mother's Marquis. Boat would be a better name for it as it's quite large. Why do small people always have to get BIG cars. I picked him up at the garage and we went to DQ for lunch then I took him back to the garage so he'd be there when the work was done. I then took my mother's car back home and commenced to making her lunch when the physical therapy tech decides to drop in. Well that pushed lunch back another hour but I had to be there in case my mother needed any help. There are few people whom she'll allow to touch her. I'm one, my father's another. After physical therapy was done I served her lunch. When she finished (2:14) I was finally able to come home and relax a bit. I have to go back at 6 to prepare her dinner, if my father isn't there that is. Then I have to go to my sister's place and feed her menagerie again. That will be it for the day. Would you believe some people think I have an easy life of staying home and doing nothing? HA!! For a crippled person I'm quite active!

Ulrich, I meant for Robby P.  Those jobs would be a huge commute for you in the morning!

Jeff, the building looks great; did you cut it in half yet?

Vincent, that’s where I got my new job, It’s a good place to keep an eye on.  Even if all you do is get a part time job, you got your foot in the door and your information is in the system.  When you apply you need to review the job description and answer the questions with the key words they use in the advertisement for the job.  The first filter to the hiring process is how many times you use the keywords in your resume and the online questions.

Robby and Ulrich let me know when you start shipping syrup I’ll line up some revenue cars to haul it, lol.

I went to LHS today and picked up a 4 pack of Buffalo Creek RR box cars (Branchline Blueprint series) , a Detroit & Toledo Short line RR box car (Branchline Blueprint series), and Dorothy picked out a Milk Tank car (boxcar).

Strong coffee in an extra large UNION PACIFIC BIGBOY mug, please & thanks.

***Sawyer, neat pics. Just don't let Robby see that caboose or he'll be out there weathering it with a giant paint gun and buckets of weathering powders.Laugh

Made it to the PO today. The package was the 24 model cars & IRS on fire building kit. Wife really likes the cars. Took the parts from the kit and gave them a good washing. Question: what kind of glues do you all use to put plastic models together? Has anyone here ever used Super Glue successfully? I would prefer something both "quick & cheap"? Still have lots of carnival ride kits ahead.

Middle/inner ear is still playing havoc with my equilibium today. Let the wife drive to the PO and I couldn't wait to get back out of the car upon returning home. Hope this goes away soon.

Good Evening Diners!

Well I am just finishing my dinner so won't those of you in the Diner join me in a glass of wine? I know Chloe has a bottle or two under the counter. I'm drinking a South African Shriaz which meets my criteria, namely cheap and drinkable.

I read all the talk about maple syrup while at work today and have to say it is one of my favourite substances. Ours comes mostly from Quebec and a little from Ontario. It costs about $8 for a 375 ml. bottle for No. 1 Medium. There is some cheaper stuff but it doesn't have the taste so I prefer to pay a couple of dollars more for "the good stuff". Have you tried Maple Butter? There isn't any butter in it as it is made from 100% maple syrup that is whipped up into the consistency of butter. Fantastic stuff on toast. I agree with Ray that the darker the better. I knew a fellow who had a maple bush near Guelph, Ontario and he once gave me some dark stuff that was unbelievable. There wasn't much sap that year so the sugar content was high yielding some truly nectar like syrup. Can you tell I like the stuff?

R.T, Does your Cooper Climax have a Coventry Climax engine? Seems to me that I recall an approx. 1000 cc engine used in some Brit sports/racing cars that had an engine like that. Can't say as I've ever seen one but the name sounded neat when I was a teenager and used to read R&T much as I do Model RR now. Funny thing that my interest in RR stopped with steam in 1960 and then went straight to cars. My wife often is amazed at the amount of '50s and '60s car info I have tucked away but can't remember what is on the grocery list.

I ran my Sante Fe a little last night but really, that is one huge engine for my little layout. It does look a little silly pulling a 7 car freight. I expect it will be back to the display shelf but first I want to hook up the rotary plow to it. Just the thing for a summer RR. I have a little store to put together, Jim's Shoe Repair I think it's called. Perhaps I'll get some weathering done on it tonight. It will just fit beside the service station and that will be it for my village buildings. I am in the planning phase for the layout extension to put in the harbour. It will only be 2' removable extension but it will keep me busy over winter.

Little Robbie is sure growing fast and is now losing some of his baby teeth. He is turning out to be a great little dog. He actually listens which is unusual for a Westie puppy.

Another cool day here, only 16C and windy but that rascal weatherman says it will be warm for the weekend. Hope so as I want to get my roof repair done.

I see everyone at the RC is asleep after my litte ramble so I'll sign off for now. Besides my glass of wine is done, so see you tomorrow.

Evening, Chloe, sorry I didn't get by earlier today. I'll have a RBF and a grilled cheese, please. Thanks!

Got the cement plant in today, and checked it out over lunch. It has decals for the Medusa Cement, Hoffa Cement, or Inland Cement. Think I'll make up my own, though...

Cederstrand
Need to ship out some prints anyway.

Hey, Rob - does that mean you have some prints selling? Great, if so! Thumbs Up Sorry to hear about Millie's ..uh, misadventure. Don't think I'll get a cat, thanks. Whistling

Lee - Wow!! you got a whale of a turnout (especially for only inviting 7 people)! Thumbs Up Careful, or you'll get elected Prez of the local MRR club (or at least membership chairman...). Smile,Wink, & Grin

Jeff, sounds like you're ready for a little R&R after all that running around. Almost as busy as Barry's day! Wink Okay, after reading your description of today, I think you have Barry beat! Whew!

Barry - I guess Spring figured he'd get you up because there was a warm spot (in the bed) in it for him as payoff. Crafty cat!

PC, time flies when you're havin' fun (cutting that metal), eh? Oops  Did you enjoy yourselves at the fair, by the way?

Ulrich, that does sound way too high of a price for the syrup. Do they have to import it from Maine, or don't they have any maple syrup places in Europe? That is expensive - I might even give up (temporarily) waffles if it was that high here. (Well, maybe - after all, we're talking waffles, after all...) But hey, if you get your syrup-importing business going, you may not need another job! Well, shucks, just saw Ray's post, and sounds like that idea got shot down. Sad

And Ray, I don't think I'll look in my cabinet and then post what kind of syrup I probably have there.... You might not approve. Wink

CN Charlie, had a client today who has a Westie - he described the dog as 'energetic', which sounds like a tad bit understated from how you've described your Robbie's energy level. Shock

Not much going on tonight for me. I'm backup, but hope to not get called by my primary. Sent an email out on some stock loading pens on a sale e-list I get. We'll see if I did that fast enough or not. The prices were reasonable, and the person listing them also had a Chooch general store that looked of interest to me, so I asked about that also. I actually have some other Chooch kits, but one is their ice station, and the resin casting is warped, so at some point I'll have to try to heat it up enough to take some of the bowing out enough.

Want to get back to some of my buildings this weekend again. I would like to get going on my scratchbuilt church (clapboard walls and some Gothic arches on the windows. Hard part of that will be the attached bell tower.

Anyone emailed BridgeTom? Beginning to wonder about where he's been..

I'll join the crew at the RC - the way the crowd's hanging around there, the twins will need to expand the counter before long!

Prayers for healing and comfort, good (and affordable) maple syrup, good equilibrium, and a good night's sleep (without head-butting until it's time to get up...).

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Rob,

The problem with super glue is it works too fast and sometimes it’s too watery.  I use the Testors glue that comes in the orange tube or the Microscale MICRO KRISTAL KLEAR.  Testor is good for joining two styrene parts together.  The Klear is good for joining two dissimilar materials together or bonding wood models together and it dries clear, matter of fact you can pull a puddle of it across an opening and make your own windows with it.

Tall glass of cool lemon water, please.

Thanks for the glue suggestions.

Uh oh, after thinking about those HO scale cars, I went back and looked at the e-sellers photo. Man, that was a bate & switch if I ever saw one. Sent a firm inquiry to the seller and depending on their response, I'll know what actions to take. There were 2 pickup trucks & 2 cars with trailers in their pic, all of which were replaced with modern sports cars. AngryGURRRRRR! Trouble with the-bay yet again.

Have a good night all.

 Good Morning Guys,

Chloe, some hotcakes and a coffee for me, please. I´ll sit at the RC and see who drops in...

What a morning! Could not sleep properly, so I got up very early - and I mean VERY early. Nice and fresh morning, ideal to w**k in the garden. Before you think I am out of my mind - all our rhododendrons are being eaten up by some sort of a cicada and the stuff to kill them needs to be sprayed on while the morning dew unables them to just fly away. So it was 4 o´clock in the morning... Befor e anybody shouts at me - the stuff is bio-degradable and doesn no harm to useful insects like bees ( I am not too sure about human beings, though ).

Have a good day, everyone!

Evenin' folks!

I spent the evening out at the R&GV RR Museum for our Histerical Society meeting.  Meaning I spent the evening riding on trains........  By the time I got there, they were just starting up the 80 tonner which has a bad brush or two on the motors so they only started one of the two prime movers in her.  Old 211 had to have the water put back in her radiator as some work has been done on it, so she was late getting fired up.  The plan I think was to move the 80 tonner out of the way and then hook LV #211 (the RS3 Hammerhead) onto both cabooses we were going to pull.  Since it was getting late the superintendent of operations made the decision just to hook on to the train leaving the 80 hooked to the 2 cabooses and pull the whole thing.  Of course that added another 80 tons to the train more than doubling what we usually pull up the hill (I think it is a 4% grade going up out of the yard...).  The old girl pulled with no problem.  The engineer had her in notch 8 for part of the grade so she really put on a show for us.  I'll have some photos tomorrow.

I found put they are short on help for the diesel runs this Sunday, so I volunteered to be a car host on one of the Crummies.

And Ray, I don't think I'll look in my cabinet and then post what kind of syrup I probably have there.... You might not approve. Wink

Hey, it's your cabinet, you can use what ever you like.....  OK by me.  I just have developed a taste for the finer things in life..... Whistling  I do believe that one of the reasons that my "test" a couple weeks ago came back clean this time is that I have gone back to natural foods and have completely eliminated Chemical Sweeteners (ala SpaceMouse).  The only sweetener I usually use now is Stevia (aka Sweetleaf).  Not only is it much healthier, but tastes much better.....  I only use Maple syrup on those times that I just have to have some pancakes and waffles.....  Hey, you have to live precariously every now and then.Smile,Wink, & GrinLaugh

Hope all of you have a great evening!

GMTRacing, I saw Harold tonight and told him about your question and my knowing the publication, month, and page, and why...  Got a big grin from him.

We'll get there sooner or later!

Cederstrand - I would not recommend to use Super Glue or any other "runny" CA stuff to glue plastic parts. At least here in Germany, it is more expensive than your regular liquid plasic cement, which is "thicker" than CA and can be applied more carefully. And you don´t risk of glueing your fingers to something... Big Smile

As for resin parts, you need to glue them with CA. The "runny" just to tack the parts together, and the gel-type one to glue them properly (from behind).

Regular paint thinner (not turpentine) works with most plastic parts as well, but even so, I stronly advise not to use it. It is hazardous material and you need a respiration mask to work with it.

Good Morning!

Happy Friday everyone!

Just stopping in for a quick breakfast bite Dinner in the Mark XV Diner.....  Shock

I'll have an Ugly Apple Fritter and a tall coffee please, thanks Chloe!

Have taken a few days off work to get "The List" done around the house. Fixed the flappers on two toilets, sent a bunch of donations to Cause for Paws, a local non-profit org benefiting animals, cleaned out and organized the garage, fixed a flat tire on Ben's bicycle, replaced a rotten ramp to the shed...still got a few things left To Do...

Later folks!

Good morning.

It's 73 and partly cloudy. The high will be around the mid 90's and there's a chance of thunderstorms.

I was too busy yesterday to get anything done on the layout and it looks like today will be a repeat. Maybe someday I'll get a break. First thing today will be to go over and feed my sister's menagerie. Only a couple more days of that. Then I'll go to the parent's house and roust my mother out of bed and get her breakfast ready for her, etc. If nothing else comes up I might be able to get some layout work done.
