Terrific...All I had to do was mention "coverd hopper", and Chris presents a CNW cement hopper. It looks great Chris.

I will take a sweet tea, and a slice of apple pie. Make it fast, before it hits the wall !!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn't do to much today. Planted some flowers at the graves (wifes family), and did some yard work. Tomorrow I will work on the hopper some.
Jim...............That boxcar didn't hurt my eyes. I sometimes like the "not over used" look. Plus it looks good as it is .
Chris...............Here's a roof shot I did of a cement car. It was a mix of plaster paris, and some dark colored powders.
Well I guess I will finish up watching the Penguins vs. Redwings. See y'all in the morning.

Nice cement hopper, Robby......... It's a covered hopper evening!
Jason ..Welcome back to the diner from the depths of the ocean. Wow.
Speaking of oceans.............Where's Fergie???????!!!!!!
Thanks for the kind words about the hopper from H**l... and special thanks to Robby P for showin' us how a pro does it.
Extra thanks to Jason for patroling the depths of the oceans in the name of protecting and defending us.
Out of the sheer heck of it, here's the entire cement fleet for your amusement. IF the layout ever gets built, these will be sent to the CCP yard (visible staging only) for off-layout/unmodeled service to two cement plants: Lehigh Cement, and not sure what the second one was. They're both side by side in NE Cedar Rapids...and now both closed.

Evening, Flo, yep, a hot fudge brownie sundae (with vanilla ice cream on top) and a cup of coffee, please (ATSF mug, oh yeah!). Thanks!
Corey, with the size of your dental bill, it's a blessing that you were able to pick up your wife's w**k van at that price. Almost (ALMOST...) starts to make up a little for it. Well, with that size bill, probably not, but it was good to get some savings out of the deal. Good thing will be, your wife knows the van's history and likely all its quirks, too. And maybe we won't ask about what her plans might be...
Garry - just one word.... Grrrrrrooooooaaaaan! (Well, maybe more) Hey, what kind of car do we want to see Chris pull out of his sleeve now? (Heh, heh...)
Barry, you're getting some of what we had earlier this week, sounds like. Ain't it wonderful? So what does Spring think of those storms, by the way?
Chris - nice job on the hopper[s], and I like the cement spill on that one. You don't think they ever do anything like that? Sure they do (when the supervisor's not watching them like a hawk)! If Rerun's a dog, that's different than my dog when I was young - he'd bite a frog he would find in the yard, but then he'd be shaking his head almost violently (like he was trying to shake the taste out)! Maybe your frogs and toads taste better than the St. Louis County ones we had back then....
Eric, after your day, I'd say you're overdue for some well-earned rest! Hope you get it tonight.
Morgan, congrats on getting one more step closer to train-running time. Jeff can probably tell you for sure, but I'd guess that the 70 percent would work (even if it might take a bit longer).
Uh,...Robby, I hope you weren't that fond of the 'clean' WP boxcar, 'cause:
(Before)
(After**)
**- On this batch, I'm not satisfied just yet with them, and will be doing some more on them. Found my matte spray (left from my photo studio days - amazed that it didn't blow up on me from its age; the things been sitting for 20 to 30 years, I think all of it unopened).
Okay back to the pics. Here's another rather garish-colored UP boxcar (Before):
and 'After':
I also did a couple of 2-bay covered hoppers (No, not the furry kind!) - a WP one (Before):
(and After):
and a Santa Fe one (Before):
and After:
Haven't decided on some kind of container for my alcohol/ink wash; the paint jar I thought I'd use still had some Barrier in it (anyone remember having to use that with Floquil and styrene?).
Jason - good to see you came up for air (and a trip to the Diner). I don't relish your having to track down your bookmarks. I have an external drive that I back up any new or changed files to (already backed up the original files) from my laptop, every Saturday evening. Makes me very glad I have that (though I really should have some off-site backup provision, too...). Enjoy your time above water!
Okay, Garry - had enough covered hopper pics yet? We don't want you to starve from lack of covered hopper pics, right? Chris - I'll just say - great job on those hoppers! I'm gonna have to save the pics of those for future reference.
About time for me to head back home again. Another warm to middlin'-warm day tomorrow (80's F), but they're talking about it going into the 90's on Monday - ouch! I'm not ready for August weather just yet.
Blessings and a good night's rest for you all,

Evening all,
Todd, that’s horrible news, I’m sorry you guys have to go through this but hopefully you can think of the time yet remaining and the good times you had in the past.Corey sounds like a good deal on the van!
Sawyer, I bought a bottle of chameleon plastic model paint stripper (gel) and it works great if the alcohol doesn’t do the trick I highly recommend chameleon. Those yellow covered hoppers look great, I think all I have right now is black and yellow ERIE and black and white NKP covered hoppers (boring). I do have a wagon top B&O hopper I need to assemble, but it’s been hard with the good weather on my off days not to concentrate on the flower beds. Sunday I hope to do some work in the train room and maybe some more scrap loads.

Goodmorning all...
Today: Sunny, with a high near 64. North wind between 10 and 16 mph. Tonight: Partly cloudy, with a low around 51. Calm wind becoming south between 4 and 7 mph.
Good morning. It's 66 and clear. The high will be around 90 and it will be sunny.Looks like my niece is serious about trapping her boyfriend. She ordered her wedding dress yesterday. If I heard correctly the date is sometime in mid July. She had to take some parts to him last night so he fix his truck, otherwise he'd be walking home. He's on a rig right now in Coushatta which is a drive of nearly 2 hours from here. I got the parent's yard mowed yesterday then went to BJ's Diner for lunch. Only thing I don't like about the place is it's not near the tracks. They're two streets over with a lot of houses and trees in between. Last night was the regular Saturday night thing of going out to dinner with my sister and my niece. One of our neighbors joined us as he enjoys a good night out also. I'm not sure of what I'll be doing today. I may work on the layout some. My sister and I are planning to go see a movie tonight. We'll see how that goes.Today's Weather for:Sundown, LA 71446-6114 5/31/2009Wind Chill: 69°FHumidity: 79%Dew Point: 62°FSo Far TodayHigh: 71°FLow: 66°FRain: 0.00"Rain Rate: 0.00"/hGust: 3mph WToday High: 90 Sunny. Mornin' everyone!
A blessed Pentecost to all of you who are of the faith! I have to be at church a bit early this morning as our tradition is that the Deacons serve communion on Pentecost. I had to contact all of the people who said they would serve, but hadn't heard back from 6 of them last night. So I spent much of the evening on the phone tracking down deacons.............. Everything is ready as it stands right now. I will be a server only if someone doesn't show. This is the only Sunday that the Deacons have the honor of doing this so we are not as used to all the details as the the "Elders" of the church.
Todd, Franklin and his owner will be in my prayers. I hope he is not and won't have to be in a lot of pain.
Currently 53°F with a high of only 60° today. Had some heavy rain during the night and it will be cloudy most of the day. May get to spend this afternoon and evening building outhouses for the layout......... Too muddy to plant the garden like I had planed.
Hope all of you have a great day!
Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO
We'll get there sooner or later!
Mornin', Big breakfast special and coffee in the usual Texas and Pacific mug please. Well, the screen door is up. We have cross ventilation in the living room, the dog is happy she can lay on the floor and look out, the wife is happy because I finished another H-D project from the list about 10 yrs ago and I'm $210 lighter. So Toddland (of which I'm king) is going through some financial hard times, until we can get the economic stimulus package monies from waiting on tables this Wed. A meeting was held in the Town Hall in Gold Creek and the Mayor calmed the citizens announcing that there are some construction projects that the materials have already been purchased for, so work doesn't have to slow or stop yet. He also reassured the folks that the lack of a stockyard for the processing plant under construction is no cause for alarm because the T&P hasn't even laid the track yet so there will be no cows roaming the town. (transplant citizens. If you don't want to live small town life.....don't move to a small town. Yeesh) Of course the T&P is also experiencing the same funding situation so since there is no processing plant or stockyards, the track is on the bottom of the list. Sorta Catch-22 thing. The as of yet not named town however, has no idea what's going on because all that is standing is a not yet finished Beer distributor and it receives shipments so since they have nothing to do. They drink beer and don't really care about the financial situation of their town. What can you do.
Hopefully I'll get some train room time in today. High School grad-gee-a-sheon's today. Not going to the ceremony just the get together afterwards at 4. Don't know what the weather will be like tomorrow so I might have to mow today. I kinda like leaving at least Sundays open for rest and railroad but sometimes it just happens. Enough about me, now about you.
Chris- Waddeya mean "for your amusement"? That's a great looking fleet of hoppers.
Jason- Welcome back from underwater "tubing". How was the ice cream? Not to chocolatey I hope. (little ribbing I always gave the submariners I new. Actually all Navy folks.)
Garry- I see you've taken over the jokes. I wish they had an icon with a blank look and eyes that blink.
Great. I've lost my internet connection. Guess I'll sit in the corner booth and wait. Refill on coffee please, Thanks. (Dee dee dumde-dum-hmmm hm-hm) Ah! Back online.
Barry- We had one of those fly by dumpings yesterday too. Got a half inch in about 15 minutes a little thunder, then.... Sunny.
Jim- Nice job! My problem is when things turn out well like yours, I keep going and usually flub it up. Bad. Yours are right about at that couple years old. The WP hopper might need a bit more, but hey, who knows? Sometimes less is more as they say. (I wish I'd done less on a couple things ).
Rob- I can see you are going to have a rough time this year in the companion department. Every time I hear of these kinds of things and I think of the inevitable with our precious Missy. She only just turned 3 last week, so hopefully it will be a long while. But when it comes, it will be devastating. I'm sure everyone here who has a pet, doesn't feel like they are pets. By the way we talk they are just like a child.
Jeff- Great scene this morning!
Thanks for all the extensions of thoughts and prayers for Franklin. I will tell his owner/lifes partner. She will be touched.
A Blessed Pentecost to all.
Have a Great Day!

@ guess733 - Nothing more boring than being underwater. I was on a fast attack so instead of the long patrols doing circles we did short runs to nowhere. I think every "important" person who wanted to ride a sub for fun would ride our boat. We all called our boat a "pleasure cruise." Nice to talk to a fellow submariner.
Been busy this last week, the house is ready and we started doing some moving in. I measured out the game room and I get 24 feet of wall to build my N-scale layout on. That should keep me busy for quite a while(and broke!)
I also had to write a small history paper and I have to finish up a powerpoint presentation later today. I am so sick of core requiremnt courses and I am so ready to get this crap over. Also found out that Obama has upped GI Bill benefits so I may get my tution paid for(no more loans, or at least less- yay!), a housing allowance and a stipend for books - a much better deal than how it works now. I'm not sure if I qualify since i am currently going to school but I think I will be able to.
All the college kids are moving out and the apartments I currently live in houses a lot of them. So I have been 'dumpster diving" getting some stuff. Got a cofee table that just needs replacement glass and two lamps. I could have got a dresser but someone beat me too it. I'm trying to get rid of crap before I move and here I am picking stuff out of the garbage. Oh well it was perfectly good stuff,- and they set it on the ground next to the trash. The town I live in is a college town so apparantly dumpster diving is a tradition among the locals here, lol.
I'm off to pack more boxes talk to ya later.
LSWrrSawyer, I bought a bottle of chameleon plastic model paint stripper (gel) and it works great if the alcohol doesn’t do the trick I highly recommend chameleon.
Thanks for the tip Lee. the alcohol is doing the trick quite well though. GP35 body+cab is stripped, handrails not so much, H-15-44 cab is almost done, body and handrails need work, GP30 is currently soaking. I'm gonna order reefer white and ATSF blue when I pick up my airbrush this week.

I'm spending my afternoon replacing trucks and wheelsets on my rolling stock. All of 'em. As in 200 pieces. They all are getting redone so that I'll not be getting irritated at looking at mismatches and odd things being used for trucks. Would you believe 16 boxcars had trucksides that were not matching at all? It took a while for me to catch this and I ended up on the phone with a friend who IS a RC and HE didn't even notice the discrepency! Does this make me more of a RC than he is? No, it's just that I got my nose out of joint is all His response was: "welcome to the world of ARGH!!" Good name for it----- So. Off to the dungeon----I mean, Trainroom
Good afternoon. I will just take a coke to go.
Time for the basement. The wifes "soaps" are on till 6:00pm. Guess I will work on the hopper some, and maybe move some cars around on the layout.
Well I better get going.
I will try to pop in later tonight.
Status report on paint stripping project:
GP35-succesfully stripped except for handrails, which don't matter because they'll be painted black
H-15-44-succesfully stripped except for sill, which still has a little red, but will be painted black, so doesn't matter.
GP30- cab stripped compeltely, body and sill/handrails need work
GP9-soaking as I type
rs1/rsd5/C-Liner-to be stripped
Afternoon everyone!
Church went well this morning. Since it is Pentecost and the reception of the Conformation Class all on one day, and as the Moderator of Deacons, I had one of those Sundays where I needed to be in 3 places at the same time. All the Deacons who were to serve communion showed up as promised and did a great job, and I managed to get into the "North Parlor" where the conformation instructions were given just as they were finishing all the instructions for their part of the service. The kid I was partnered with was glad to see me (I think he thought I wasn't going to show up) and had a big grin and a very relieved look on his face when he saw me. Our tradition is a "laying on of hands" from the partners and after that taking a stole we wear off and placing it on the new member. Makes for some good drama in the liturgy........
Got home from that, had lunch and went to work in the trainroom on the outhouses I started last night. No sooner got down there than my son shows up with my granddaughter, Olivia. He was going to work on his boat trailer..... Olivia had other plans and we ended up down at the playground where Grampa and Olivia (and son) had a great time for about two and a half hours.... Some things are more important than the trains. Olivia did get to see one loco run and I let her carefully hold a boxcar for a bit. She is going to be a Jr. Engineer before you know it! She is fascinated with "Pahpa's" trains. Mom and little sister Emily were at a Tupperware party this afternoon.
The Finger Lakes region is under a "Frost Advisory" for tonight so it may be a good thing I haven't got the garden planted yet. I will bring the peppers inside tonight.
Have a good day everyone!
howmusI had one of those Sundays where I needed to be in 3 places at the same time.
Good afternoon,
Thanks to everybody for the kind words on the cement hoppers...I 'preciate it.
I had a reply already to send out last night, bumped something...and *poof* Gone.
Had to w**k today. See if this doesn't sound like a South Park episode: "Children of all ages are invited to help us counteract Nature Deficit Disorder during...Johnson County Heritage Trust's Family Day. Learn and play with mushrooms, prairies, woodlands, creeks, edible plants, birds, tracking, scavenger hunts, and more!"
Oh my God...they killed KENNY!
The actual event was much smaller than the press release indicated, but got a lot of good shots of kids playing in the creek, and a guy showing mushrooms to kids. Easy to shoot, editing shouldn't be too tough...and not a whole lot of writing required. Tomorrow, I get to try to contact "the Bug Man," and a few other more business-feature oriented leads.
Time for a tall, COLD lemonade, I think.
Oh, JIM, you were asking about Rerun eating the toad... he was a very young puppy, Mr. Toad hopped by, Rerun grabbed him and probably wanted to play with him...like squeaking his stuffed hedgehogs. I think Mr. Toad might've "squeaked" once...and that was it for him. I didn't even know it had happened until I saw a toad leg sticking out of Rerun's mouth... *gulp* Gone. The only nasty effects I saw were the...uh...err..."remains" that emerged later that evening and the next morning...
Have a good'un everybody...
ok, update: my GP30 is now stripped as well as the GP35 and H-15-44, and my GP9 is about half-done. next up are my factory-painted models.
36 box cars with new truck/wheelsets done-----150+ to go ----
Got some stuff to do with the rolling stock. Some couplers need to be reset as I put new wheelsets on---now the couplers are off Oh well, do all of this then the cars won't be all going silly on me when we have our first 'real' operating session
Off to do some more wheelsets---
A sunny Good Afternoon, Flo! I'll have a RBF please 'n' thank you.
Rob, good to know that lumber is still good for something (besides giving you blisters and such).
Jeff, I like that loco consist in your photo from this morning. Is your niece afraid the boyfriend'll change his mind on her, or what's her rush? (Sorry, talking like a single guy there...).
Todd, I was noticing on my build dates on some of the cars, that some have 1957 or 1958 build dates, so a couple of years may be the best on weathering that I need for those. That, or I need to really pour on the weathering right around the build dates....
And thanks to everyone for the compliments on my 'first steps' at weathering. I suspect (as I told Johnboy in an email earlier today) that my camera may be making my weathering jobs look better than they are. I think the batteries are getting ready to die on me (when I'd go to take some of the 'after' shots, it was like the camera stopped to think about it before taking the photos ). So some of the color may be that the flash was lower power and the tungsten lamp behind me gave a shift to the color cast. My guess, anyway.
NSJoe - I like your website (and it'll get looking even better as you have more to put up there).
Galad - take your time and plan out how you want to use your space. 24 feet is a good-sized N scale space. Maybe if you're lucky, you'll have someone who will toss out some plywood or 2 X 4's you can use for benchwork. On your courses, how far along are you - freshman year, or sophomore year yet? Nice thing is, once you get past sophomore courses, you begin to get into your major's courses and it usually becomes more fun.
Barry, careful there so you don't lose the 'having fun' part of the hobby. It may be that the reason you noticed the trucks not matching, was that it's your layout, so you see them more often (and therefore are more likely to notice them than your visiting friend would). Now me, I'd have to go dig up a book or online site to tell what kind of trucks are on (or should be on) a freight car (let alone on a passenger car).
Ray, sounds like a busy Sunday morning for you. And Frost Advisory?? In almost-June? Sheesh! I don't think I'll be moving up that way, global warming or not...
Morgan - looks like your paint shop crew is pretty busy lately. Maybe some photos of progress before too much longer?
Chris, I guess Mr. Toad must've been an unseasoned toad - that, or Rerun gobbled Br'er Toad so quickly that he didn't even taste him.
Feeling a bit better today. Was kinda low on gas in the car (and about a week to go until next paycheck hits the account), and wondering how well it would last (or if I'd get a call out from w**k to one of our further reaches that we cover, if I'm run out of the petrol on my way back in). I decided to ask one of my singles friends if I could borrow some gas money till Sat., and when she came by, she gave me the bill and said it was a gift. (Then when I went back inside and looked at the bill, it was the next bigger 'size'). So though everything ain't covered, I have a little breathing space in the meantime.
Prayers for those recuperating and in need of healing or comfort. Please keep my Memphis friend Linda and her family in your prayers or thoughts. Her mother had been having memory and health problems, and I found out last night that the mother died last Monday. Almost seems like a blessing for the mother, as she's not in pain anymore now that she's home.
I'll sit here in the window booth a while and doodle some track ideas on my paper placemat.
Blessings and prayers,
Afternoon all from BalmyCal. Our cool-down is in effect through next Wednesday, according to our Omnipotent Weatherpeople out here, so we should be enjoying low 80's and high 70's for the next several days. Sure makes for nice weather to open up the garage and do a bit of railroading, by golly!
Ray: Glad Pentecost went well for you. Unfortunately, I had to cancel because of tummy problems, but I was in the local supermarket today and ran into one of our Saturday Vesper regulars. She said that she missed me and that the music was just awful. Which made me kind of blink, since my substitute was the regular Sunday morning Mass pianist. So I said, "But Joanne's a MARVELOUS pianist." "I don't mean Joanne--she played well and the choir sounded very good. I mean the MUSIC was awful."
Then she went on to let me know that she didn't like the 'new' music the Director had chosen for Pentecost, and the congregation wanted the old familiar Pentecost music that we've done for years and years, back. I kind of smiled at her and nodded. Frankly, I wasn't that crazy about the 'new' Pentecost music, myself, but I'm there to play, not criticize. I have a feeling that the Director's going to hear about it, though. Kind of reminded me about the joke: "How many Catholics does it take to change a light bulb?" "What do you mean, CHANGE!!!??? "
Oh, well---
Jeff: I too liked that diesel line-up. But then, you had one of those ex-Rio Grande's in the consist. Always liked that later scheme, it really meant BUSINESS, as far as I'm concerned. How's the foot coming along?
Well, no news on the--er--ah--'digestive' problem yet, though all the tests are back. I know what I DON'T have (Guiardia, Salmonella, Cancer, Pancreatitis, Chirrosis--and oh yah, I'm HIV Negative--however THAT test got in there--), now we've got to find out what I DO have. But I don't mind telling you this 'restrictive' diet is the absolute PITS! I was in the supermarket today and had to walk past the steak counter (sigh) and the raw-vegetables-to-make-a-killer-salad counter (double sigh) and settle for a cheesy chicken casserole. Oh yah, and re-stock on Activia. Yuk! Should be hearing from my Dr. tomorrow, I hope. Either that, or I call his office and very nicely say, "Just what the %&*@ is going on? I would like to have steak, salad and a BEER before I die!"
Oh well, as Bette Davis once said: "Old Age Ain't For Sissies."
Took some photos of my "Prospector" for WPF this weekend. I was in Railroad Hobbies the other day picking up the last of the Rio Grande streamlined Pullman cars and talking about the train to one of the guys there. He grinned and said, "You know that Rio Grande ran that as a NIGHT train." I grinned back and said, "Not on MY railroad. No WAY am I running this baby in the dark after all the money I spent on it!" Cracked him up.
Well, that's about it from my end of the country. Uff-Dah and Spooky send their best, Spooky said to tell you guys in the Midwest that she could certainly use some good old Iowa corn to munch on (don't ask ) and Uff-Dah says thanks for the recipes for Lutefisk, but on second thought, he'll stick to Tuna. (I TOLD him!!)
Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Hi Tom! Sorry to hear you are still "under the weather". Hopefully they will know what is going on soon, or at least you recover on your own.
twhiteThen she went on to let me know that she didn't like the 'new' music the Director had chosen for Pentecost, and the congregation wanted the old familiar Pentecost music that we've done for years and years, back. You mean like the old Presbyterian Hymn (sung to the tune of the "Old Onehundredth - altered rhythm)?
We've always done it this way before,We'll always do it this way therefore......
