Hint on what I'm working on: It involves a beat-up Bachmann GP-?? out if their Golden spike set, sprues and leftover detail parts off a Roundhouse RS-3 kit, Atlas Snap-Switch control wire, and old hotel access cards. Can you guess?

I have absolutely NO idea, but you'd better darned well show photos when you get whatever it is finished.  Sounds REALLY intriguing!

PS:  Looks like Dinner's on me.  Flo, I'll have grilled pork chops, cheese pasta and Brussel Sprouts.  And yes, you have Brussel Sprouts, I sent them all the way from out here in the Salinas Valley.  And yes, I know, I'm the only weird guy around here that LIKES them, LOL!

Let the rest of the guys order their favorites.  Tongue

2.44 for 10% ethanol gas?  2.55 for reg?  We don't have that 10% stuff and the reg is 'up' to 2.23  last week, BH (before holiday) it was 2.09.

I was (atypically) optimistic. Reg. unleaded is now $2.61. We've got the ethanol craze bad here...10% ("E-10") has been popular here for years, 85% is rare, but more and more places are carrying it. We've also got the soy bio-diesel, but opinions seem split 50/50 on it. Of course, the soybean producers swear by it, but I've also heard truckers swear AT it for clogging stuff up.

In general, Des Moines/central Iowa is cheaper than here in the Eastern part. Rumors have flown about collusion (sp.) amongst the distributors in the area. Never proven.

With the yard DONE for another week...maybe, just maybe I can finish off that cement hopper.

Hmmmm. Chloe? a TALL RBF if ya please, and thankya...

JEFF: a cop hassle a firefighter? Nahhhh, never...Whistling I met a gentleman from FDNY EMS a few years ago (spoke at an EMS conference the community college I w**ked for sponsored). He told me the FDNY guys would tell the NYPD that "...if you'd just scored higher on the (civil service) test, you coulda been a fireman...but no...you scored so low, they had to make you a cop."Laugh **apologies to any law enforcers in the room** Honestly, I've never had a problem with 'em. The Sheriff's deputies in Linn County (Cedar Rapids, Central City, Springville, etc.) were almost always good to us. Here in Cedar Co., they seem to be an allright bunch...once they finally get here. The new town cop seems a bit...dopey, but so far he's been good to us.

ROBBY P: Hey, if yer lookin' for a weathering idea for grain hoppers...

I caught it in a grain train in '93, the original "year of the flood."

Hello people.

We had a series of heavy showers and one vicious little T'storm come through --knocked power out with barrels of lightning and thunder and a period of monsoon rain--we ended up with about 3" of rain--all in about 45 minutes---Whistling

Chris  I've gotten a few pix of things like that. Can even do that with some older buildings, or better yet, modern houses whose owners forget about looking after the eaves---end up with Maple trees trying to take root---

Sounds about the same as the storm that hit here the other day. We got 4" of rain and half an hour of hail all in just over an hour and a half.

Pretty slow night here. I've been thinking about the conversation I had with the foot doc this morning. He's talking about possibly going into my foot and removing some of the bone. Removing some of the bone would take the pressure off the area and give it a good chance to heal. I'm going back in a week to get another set of X-rays done so he can see what he might have to go after.

Evening, Chloe - it's not too late for the dinner specials, is it? Great! I'll have the smaller ribeye, Caesar salad, asparagus, and a baked potato (with sour cream and butter, but hold the calories), please. Thanks!

Cederstrand
***Robby/Jerry, nice weathering on your box cars!Thumbs Up

Rob, I'd have to [ditto] that one - Jerry, I haven't seen doors like those on that box car before. They kinda look like a PS-1, but nnnnnnnot quite. Confused What type are they - anyone know?

Chris, way to go on the job security with those photos - got to knock their socks off every so often. Keep it up, and when they get some more money, maybe you'll get a raise! Thumbs Up Oh, excellent explanation of the "Bluelight" darlings...Thumbs Up You're right about the light color choices - they do vary a lot from state to state. Yeah!! I think that grain hopper you posted the pic of, is gonna require a bit more w**k to do than Robby's usual weathering job does. Just a hunch, mind ya.Laugh

Bama, you're gonna have to explain to the married Diners how you managed to get the 'To-Do' list done before the weekend! I'm sure a lot of them would love to know your secret... Smile,Wink, & Grin Or is that list just at work, and not the dreaded 'Honey-Do' list?

Fairly easy day at work today - when I came in, my schedule only had one client on it, late morning. Mid-morning, one client had called in wanting to get to see me today (this one has rescheduled once and missed another, so...). I had them schedule the client after my other one. Guess which client never showed up or called? I think the client and I will be chatting on the phone come Monday about whether he needs a different therapist. Kinda wondering, as the client has a substance abuse history (including not that long ago this year). We'll see how the phone conversation goes...

Weather here turned out okay this afternoon (by my lunch time, a little late, about 1:20 p.m. - I go usually around 1 p.m., as there's less waiting if I go to a restaurant of any kind). On the radio they were saying it was going into the 80's F this weekend, and as high as 90 (F) by Monday(!). Hey, I'm not ready for it to get into that part of the summer just yet...Thumbs Down Oh, yesterday and the night before we only got 1.5 inches of rain, so we're slacking on you, Jeff.

Ray, nice photos of your 'renters'. Wink It's a good thing you switched over to those cooler CFL bulbs, or you'd have had cooked robin eggs instead. Shock

BridgeTom, as you may have noticed from the RC posts, we don't think ALL RC's are evil minions of the Darth himself...Wink I probably will be checking with you about those D&RGW paint schemes on a couple or three cars & cabeese that I'm not sure about. (Suprisingly, I've had trouble just finding a simple explanation with pics of 1) what the color scheme looked like, and 2) when the color scheme was in use (from/until). As for looking at the build date, I do that too (maybe I'm a RC-fence-straddler?). Laugh As for your Princess and Lord Uff-Dah, how loud was their 'disagreement', anyway? I'm trying to figure what the row might've been like (and wondering if all the raccoons in the area started heading over the nearest ridge when they heard your two 'getting it on'....Whistling

Hmm, Lee - maybe I'm in more serious 'trouble' than I thought. I do try not to duplicate car numbers, Oops -  but then again, I won't go through the Santa Fe and D&RGW rosters to see what the next acceptable number would be before I change the number (meanwhile, I just won't run both cars next to each other. And I won't have to renumber them right away - just a mental note that "need to do that,... sometime..." I just don't want to have someone asking in a loud voice, "DID YOU KNOW THAT YOU HAVE THREE BOXCARS WITH THE SAME NUMBER?" right in the middle of having some friends over (once I get to that stage). Of course, if someone did that, I'd probably not be inviting HIM back again.Mischief Now, I think there are one or two members in our MRR club who keep a list with them at train shows of all their car numbers (to me, that's RC territory!).

Okay, Nik.n - you have me puzzled - plus, what's with the last part of your post (right before Internet Explorer) Confused - Whazzat?

Jeff - Nice bug light, but where's the zapper grid? Wink (Just funnin' ya) How tall is that lantern (looks pretty tall, but can't tell for sure), and how long's it supposed to stay lit up (does it use one of those square lantern batteries)? Hope your doctor doesn't have to do very much digging at all on your foot. Doesn't sound the least bit enjoyable. Will keep your foot and the doctor in my prayers.

And here's a little something I asked the twins if they could post at our newfangled R-Counter: (**No offense other than a little 'joshing' intended for any of us who resemble any of these**)

You Might be a Rivet-Counter If:

  1. You have used the ORER so much that you know on exactly what page the ATSF gondolas start.
  2. You know what ORER stands for, and have at least two copies of it (just in case...).
  3. You don’t have any cars that are straight out of the box (freight or passenger) cars on your layout (ALL have had details added to them!)
  4. You spend more on orders from Cal-Scale, Utah Pacific, Cannon, and other detail parts than you did on the locomotive or car itself.
  5. Seeing that someone’s layout has three or more cars with the same numbers actually will raise your blood pressure 20 points.
  6. You repainted all of your diesels because you knew that the color Proto used for Santa Fe Yellow was just NOT the right one.
  7. Your grain hoppers are weathered according to the type of grain that they carry (wheat, barley,...).
  8. “Fun” is NOT a word you use lightly in connection with your hobby - by golly, you take your model railroading seriously!
  9. “Toy” is like a four-letter word to you, and you try not to use it in polite company.
  10. "Good enough" is not a phrase that would escape your lips in reference to something on your layout.

 Smile,Wink, & Grin

Time to get me one of those apple turnovers to go, Chloe. Hey, I figure I can use it for a bedtime snack, and then have the rest in the morning, warmed up with my coffee. Dinner  I'm hoping my July MR comes in soon - no sign at the post office (again) today. Sigh

Everyone take care of yourselves, and prayers will continue for those ailing and in need of comfort, and for no more rain than what you need for any garden (or stock or crops).

Blessings and Prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

I can see that. But it would depend on where the bone is taken out. I've a neighbour who had that done and it was interesting for him for a bit before it got better---whatever you do take good care of it.

Evening all,

Good news; my grandmother made it out of surgery today, when the surgeon started working her gallbladder ruptured.  If I ever get stubborn and bull headed about going to the doctor someone please smack me in the head.

Jeff is this the same foot that’s been giving you troubles over the past year or so?  I hope this operation fixes everything for you.

Todd, no problem, now go over to the rivet counter and have a coffee on me…..

How tall is that lantern (looks pretty tall, but can't tell for sure), and how long's it supposed to stay lit up (does it use one of those square lantern batteries)?

It uses 4 D size batteries and is supposed to stay lit for 245 hours on one set of Energizer Max batteries. That's a little over 10 days if left on for 24 hours a day. It uses 8 white Nichia LED bulbs for illumination. It stands 7 inches high when folded and about 14 inches high unfolded.

 Good morning.

It's 62 and sunny. The high will be around 90 and it will be sunny.

My father is back at work today. We'll see how that goes for him. My visit to the foot doc went well yesterday. The wound hasn't healed all that much in the past few months and he took some X-rays to find out why. The bones in the middle of my foot are lower than the toes and heel so all the weight is on that point in the middle. He's considering going in through the wound to shave off some of the bone so the weight can be more evenly distributed over the entire foot. This is something I have to think about. After all, it is MY foot! It would cause me quite a bit of inconvenience in the short term but I've not been able to have a normal life for the past 4 or 5 years the way it is now. The doc has performed this kind of operation countless times and is very good at it. I have to go back next week and get a new set of X-rays done so he can see if he has to go in or not. I'll be out a little later today cutting my parent's grass. Wouldn't want it growing tall have a rain storm send it totally out of control.

Mornin', I guess it's suppose to rain today, again. I don't know how much MRR I'm gonna get in today, Going to install a storm door on the front door. Of course the door doesn't just fit without some mods that require a return trip to Spfld. We have no windows on the front of the house other than the bedrooms, so cross ventilation in the living room is a problem. We get a breeze at the windows, but when it gets warmer longer, the warm air gets trapped and can't get out. So after all these years storm/screen door it is. My power bill dropped by over $100 by not running the furnace or air cond last month so I'm thinking this door will pay for itself right quickThumbs Up. I didn't get any in yesterday. The lady at the restaurant asked if I would come in and make pizzas a day or two a week because I'm so cool. That'll be some extra cash. Maybe if I get enough of these piddly things here in town I won't have to reacquaint myself with the working Springfield to supplement the ole retirement.

Chris-I don't know if I would discredit him yet. I meant around here. This goofy state may have laws in certain counties or cities that DO prohibit blue lights. North of I-80, for instance, is a state in it's own it seems like and in Cook County......who knows? Maybe the Quads are the same. The cops here have absolutely no problems with the VFD thank goodness. Cars fly when the page goes off, the firefighters flying to the station or going direct, the cop flying past them in another direction towards the call to see if he needs to keep people back etc. They really work together. We are lucky.

Nik.n- Cleaning up?Confused

Tom - Oh no you don't! You're not the only one who likes Brussel Sprouts.Dinner

Jim- Hm, Shocka couple of those things on the list I can identify with (not very many). Oh well, as long as I don't get too big for my britches and start telling you guys what your doing wrong on your layout, and I don't see how that could happen. It would be like telling you, you picked the wrong color car! I'm sure you guys would set me straight right quick like!!!!!Laugh

Lee-Wonderful to hear your Grandma's doing well.Angel

Barry- Good luck at the yard sale. We have those down here too. I myself don't go to them, besides they always set all this stuff out on it so you can't see the whole thing. Probably covering the bad spots. I just work on growing my own. It seems such a chore to get one up from someone elses place anyway. Then, what, roll it up? I don't know. Oh well, to each his own. Hey, while your at these peoples houses, maybe they might have some neat train stuff they want to unload.Yeah!!

Jeff - Scraping the bone down? Wouldn't that procedure weaken your foot bones and make it more prone to breaking? I mean, you're not exactly an inactive person and if I remember correctly, you can't feel if your foot breaks. That could be bad. Or am I imagining more scraping than would be necessary? To me it would seem like whittling on a hollow stick then putting pressure on it.

Well, I've fooled around long enough best get workin'

Have a Great Day!

Good Morning, Janie - I'll have the waffle stack with maple syrup and butter, glass of milk, another of Ed's OJ, and some of the TH in a Rio Grande mug, please. Thanks!

Garry, I just figured I'd hop in here and see what was going on this morning...Whistling

Jeff, that's a good long life on those batteries. I'm sure the LED's make a huge difference compared to other light sources. As for you surgery, just think it through and go with whatever will work out better for you overall. If needed, make whatever adjustments you have to for the short-term. Sounds like you have a capable (and straightforward) doctor if you decide to go with the surgery. If you do the surgery, did the doctor say about how long you'd be off your feet/out of commission?

Todd, I think I had somewhere between four to six of those things on the RC list, but I'm trying not to get too accurate on my count.Smile,Wink, & Grin

Think I may do some weathering on one of my Cotton Belt covered hoppers today (after getting some of the 'structures-in-progress' moved off of the layout. Then, when the weathering is drying, I can go back and check the track (and maybe get one step closer to wiring things up). Gee, I can get distracted awful easy.

What's everyone else got on their agenda (and/or honey-do list) for today?

I'll join you Diners at the rivet counter for a bit, while I eat my breakfast.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

He counted them one morning, I noticed he was short by one frog. He said: "It must have croaked."

Oooooooooooh, ugh!  That is bad Garry.  Bad, bad, bad!  I love it.

Mornin' everyone!

No Barry, I am not quite awake yet.  I haven't had my COFFEE

So far it looks like a nice day here in the Finger Lakes.  There is a big bright yellow thing in the shy and the temps will be in the mid to high 60s all day.......  May get the rest of the lawn mowed and the Garden done and planted if I get off my......... and get to work.

On the Ribits and other counters.....  I do find that the more realism I have on my layout and the more true to a prototype it is, the more I like my work, and the more fun I have.  I also find that I can enjoy other peoples layouts even if they are no more than plywood centrals.  I think what I enjoy is seeing others have fun with what they are doing (even if it is not something I would want for my layout).  So in some ways (much like Tom W.) I guess I am a Rivet Counter at times, but at others not.........  I don't know if that makes much sense or not.  Lets just say - if it is fun and doesn't hurt anyone, go ahead and do it!

Hope all of you have a great day!

Eeeeeeeexactly. Last time I checked nothing any of us (the whole MRR community) does, did or will do has hurt anyone else. Well said.

The only thing that hurts is when someone picks anothers work to pieces, not over modeling tips to help a person achieve the look they are trying to achieve, but over "not like it's suppose to be" stuff. Of course then you get the arguement over what "modeling" really is and how I, (we, they, others) are making a mockery of the hobby.

In their humble opinion of course. Yeah right.Grumpy

I heard some bad news the other night. Franklin, a beautiful St Bernard, kind, gentle, loving, a Certified Therapy dog, an absolute perfect dog, was diagnosed with Lymphoid Cancer. I was petting Franklin when the owner/life partner told me. As soon as she told me the news Franklin looked over his shoulder at me with those big sad eyes a St Bernard can have as if he knew what was said. I got all choked up and I admit my eyes welled up with tears and couldn't speak for a few minutes for fear of just crying. It's sad that things like this happen especially to someone, yes I meant to say someone, like Franklin. Hopefully his short time left on earth will be enjoyable and comfortable.

Sorry to bring this up. I don't want to put a sad note on peoples day, I just wanted to give Franklin some thoughts. If you believe in giving animals prayers please include Franklin. He truly deserves them. Franklin and his lifes partner will surely appreciate them.

Afternoon, Flo - I'll have a RBF, please, with some cheesey fries. Thanks!

Let's see Ray, that sounded sorta familiar - I'd say, the 1960's or 1970's, but back then it was worded like "If it feels good, do it" - was that it? EvilSmile,Wink, & Grin

Now, Garry, haven't you ever heard of a "hoppy toad"? Wink

Todd, sorry to hear that awful news about Franklin - especially with him being a St. Bernard (from all of them I've seen, one of the gentler breeds of dogs) and a therapy dog, too. AngelAngel for him and for his 'owner'.

As for this hobby being for the fun, and not getting paid - Amen! I've never had a 'job' where I paid to do my stuff, so that must mean this is a hobby, right? Smile,Wink, & GrinWhistling If it stopped being fun, I would probably quit really soon. Luckily for me, I don't see that happening anytime soon.

Gorgeous day outside in Cape Girardeau today. The morning sprinkles have left the area, and we are at 84 F (29 C), supposed to drop to the 60's (18 C) tonight. Humidity feels better than the 50 percent that my weather widget says it is. I did get most of the buildings moved off the layout to other locations, and moved the WP boxcar (the one that hurt Robby's eyes, wasn't it?) and the Santa Fe (wood style) caboose to the DR table/workbench. I need to drill holes for handrails on the caboose, and see if I can make some headway getting those glued on & done. Tempted to also see about assembling three LBF gondola kits that I have ('Bay purchases) today, also. I'll take photos of whatever I get done and post later.

Jerry, if it's been that long since you got out of your place, then it's definitely a good thing for you and Sallie to get out there (and doubly so, if your weather is as good today as ours here)! Thumbs Up

Rob, how usable (for other stuff/projects) will any of your post wood be, or will they mostly be for the burn pile or compost pile?

I was trying to find a topic in the forums that had photos of Santa Fe diesel locos with numbering, but no luck when I tried to open the link I'd saved. Sigh Same thing with another link on EMD locos that I'd saved. Pffffftttt!

I was thinking this morning, that what would be great would be if I could find some photos of freight cars that have been in use about 5-7 years from their build dates. 'Cause I was thinking that for my weathering of cars, I wouldn't expect that the major roads like Santa Fe or Rio Grande would have their cars looking like some of the really rusty/dilapidated ones in that short of a time after they were built. Now, the cars with build dates in the 1940's, on the other hand...Whistling

I'm gonna kick back and enjoy my RBF while I watch the trains for a while...

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good afternoon folks.

I've been busy this week dealing with my teeth problems. What a pricey pain in the you know what. Depending on what the insurance covers, I'm looking at between fifteen and eighteen hundred dollars. That's WITH the insurance! Holy crap, thirty five hundred dollars for a combined three hours of work! I'm in the wrong business.

My wife's last day of work was yesterday. I've been planning for a car purchase since she had a company van. I was concerned about spending a good portion of our savings on another vehicle. Well, since the company is downsizing, they don't need her van anymore. We purchased the vehicle for fifty bucks! It's a 2001 Chevy Venture with 195000 miles on it. We are replacing the tires and recharging the air conditioning. All told, I should have less than five hundred bucks into this van. I'm not much of a minivan guy, but that's less than the tires cost for my car. I'll put my savings back into the savings account for another day. As soon as she gets a new job I'll sell this van to my brother and buy a new one.

I will not get any modeling done until I return form Las Vegas in a few weeks. I could get some done this weekend, but the wife has other plans for me!

Have a great weekend everyone!

WEll, went to the LHS and picked up my Code 55 track. Then my dad went by Hobby Lobby, and I bought a jar of model Master insignia red and 6 paintbrushes (brushes for my powders, paint for SCRail boxcars).

I also ordered a Badger Model 250 airbrush which should be here mid-week, and I'll have a ride to go pick it up! Smile expect to see some locomotives painted for SCRail predecessor SCUP next weekend, and boxcars painted for SCRail. eventually some locos painted for SCRail will appear as I get the paint for them.

Also, listen to this song, i love it:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LOVBphvHYA

Good Evening...

Well, finally got THAT cement hopper finished I've been blathering on about lately. This is the third time I've done one of these...and the third time was NOT the "charm." Quite the opposite. It was about as difficult as the first, and had a lot more complications.Sigh

Here's the prototype:

The second model, built...within the last two years:

And the problematic third model. Yeah, I know...the cement spill on top is probably a bit too much...

JIM: Rerun saw a "hoppy toad" once...and promptly dispatched it to the great lilly pad in the sky by making a snack out of it.Shock

I'll be in the back...

Boy, what a day!!!

First, Chris - the hopper looks great.  Recently saw something about cement cars and over flow/spillage. Looks convincing to me, but then we don't get many cement hoppers here.  Plastic pellet cars yes, no cement.

3 calls today, all locals.  Hot water burn at 6:30am,  diabetic call 10:15am (sugar@29!),  6:00pm, siezure call which turned out to be a suicide attempt with 2 slit wrists and lots of blood and a combative patient.  In the middle of all this I had breakfast with 2 of my female squadmates, went to a pre-school 'community health show' which ended before we got there because no one showed up, and, bought a motorcycle.  I was home for about 3 hours total today.  Meanwhile the grass looks like it grew another 6 inches....

I did manage to get some weathering done on the carfloat yesterday.  Don't know if it's 'correct' or not.  I used a photo of the "Cross Harbor" car floats from 1993 for info.

Lee, yours goes out Monday.  Sorry for the delay

Time for bed.  Yeah, it's 'early' but it was a busy day.

end of June/beginning of July, somewhere in that timeframe.

I biked up to Food Lion and bought some 70% alcohol to strip my locos and a few cars; my GP35 is soaking right now. they didn't have any 91% alcohol, which is why I got the 70%
