Nothing going on lately, been busy getting assignments in.Grandma acquired a "ferocious" German Shepard pup that is spoiled like a typical purse dog. (being carried, all name brand chew toys, dog breath mints, and the ability to chew on anyone's ankle without being yelled at) Also been working on the GP-?? rebuild, and I realized I gotta start figuring out a name. How about GP-3r because it is a mixture of a GP and a RS-3? Also, HOW ON EARTH do you get gold paint stripped off with 70% alcohol? it has been sitting for two and a half days, all the other paint has dissolved off and the gold is still clinging. Just forget about it and prime? HELP!

Good Morning---
We had a night full of monsoons and T'storms. Now it is plain FOG. --- I checked the backyard which is doing a good impression of being a lake --- which it appears to be having grown---again. That's it. there is going to be a floating dock out there---I might as well get a R/C boat if this keeps up. We're going to a high of 21C with a mix of sun/cloud with a 20% chance of showers----tonight it will clear up and go to a low of 10C. Tomorrow will cloud right back up and a 60% chance of showers and T'storms will be with us---
Got morning client visits and some office work planned as well as some shopping to do. I'm toying with the idea of doing some more photography around a couple of industrial areas around here with my one friend. We seem to have got into a jag with the photography of prototype ideas here---Oh well

Mornin' coffee and a bowl of sugar coated sugar bombs please. Thanks. I guess I had best get some wood for the shed floor today and put it in. I've got a $10 card yet to use for Lowe's by the 15th. And since it's going to be partly sunny with high of 82F today is as good a day as any. Especially since it's supposed to rain AGAIN tonight and tomorrow.
Morgan- Now that looks good! I have, generally, the same problems with a spray can that you have with an airbrush. I'm hoping I won't have the same problems with the brush.
I just can't get a decent fade, or blend, by using a brush. I always leave a definite, well at least to me, line it seems between colors. Generally making my weathering look like a very hideous paint job.
Say, what's the advantage of using alcohol (70%?) to dilute the paint over say distilled water. Should that be what I use? Or is it personal preference because it's available and saves having another product around. Will I need to get approval on the mixture through the World Airbrush Control Committee for A Safer Society (or WACC A...well hmm. Might have to rename it)

Chris- Chris, Chris, Chris. Now you know being a Rivet Counter is not a bad thing in itself. It's the obnoxious better than you, you aren't worthy of MRR, your stuff ain't right Rivet Counter that is the scorn of all us less than perfecters. We all like detail and accuracy, just have our own level of concern and are not concerned how someone else does it. I for one am extremely impressed at models that are highly accurate. Almost, but not really, envious of the talent involved. (Pssst, just so you know, the GN box car is upside down. Just trying to help.)
Nik- I hope her German Shepard gets out of the playful biting before to much longer, those dogs have a pretty powerful bite. Trust me, when they get older, they can break bone!
Ulrich- Oh, so sorry about the business. I know nothing of the German job market, what's of interest, that kind of stuff. We will put you in our prayers that an answer will be shown you for your problem.
Gotta unpack and rotate the groceries at the restaurant today then the shed floor and sometime I hope for train time. Let's see if while at Lowe's I can remember to zip over to Wally World and pick up some 90% alcohol.

Bama, yea it’s pretty nice for us end users. I started using them 2 years ago when my regular mechanic told me I needed new spark plugs for my diesel.Jeff, ask to see a non-HD picture on the TV before you buy it. My friend bought a HD TV, got it home and the picture was really grainy because he didn’t have a HD signal coming into the house. I hope it all works out for you.

Well, I didn't get the letter off last night as planned, and I won't get it off tonight because I'm going to be diong a "thank you" job. My sister-in-law's rack and pinion has cracked and is pouring fluid out of it on her 99 Sable, so I'll be under it tonight, cursing and threatening to take the torch after it. Oh well, it could be worse. BTW, I've had my GP40-2 sitting in 70% alcohol for....4 days now, I think, and most of the paint is still on it, now I'll admit that I haven't gotten an old toothbrush after it yet, but I will probably do just that on Wednesday. But for right now, I'm going to sit here at the RC and enjoy this chow.

We're still waiting on the new great grand baby to arrive, Doc say anytime after the 10'th.

Good thing I'm retired... No way I could get everything done that I need to if I wasn't. I am hoping to get out to the Museum this afternoon and tonight to help work on some projects out there. Lawn should be mowed again while it is not raining, and I will be spending a while on line learning how to update the email list for the Lakeshores Division NMRA website. Then I will send out the flyer to everyone for the summer picnic coming up in August.
Ulrich, sorry the loan for the business didn't happen. I'm sure you will find something before too long. Good luck and I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers.

My mother is doing well. She's sitting up now and is in a regular room with more reasonable visiting hours. She can't wait to get out of that place. Nobody dares to bring up the hair issue. My father can't bear to be away from her for too long. He's up there every other day at least.

I work yesterday on some end of track bumpers...I couldn't see the price they want for them so I scratched these from the odds and ends box...They are alittle ruff and alittle large but from normal veiwing range they look OK to me..and can't beat the price...

So, what was it there about the mechanic that tipped you off, Lee? Kinda tells ya something when you know more about your vehicle than the mechanic does - not a good sign.
Ulrich, that is NOT good on your business. Will add you to my as well. My only suggestion would be the general job-hunting ones from experience - put applications in at any place that you think might have a job you could be qualified for, and maybe see if you can line up two part-time jobs. Might be useful even for a part-time job, to get your foot in the door and let 'em know that you have good work habits, etc. Keep at it, and we'll be praying for doors to open for you.
Sounds like a lot of mechanic-car-repair talk in the Diner lately (and about which I know pretty much nothing...) That's why I don't do much on my Taurus myself. 'Nuff said!
Jeff, hope you get the new TV soon. Getting it all hooked up to the DVR, DVD player and everything else will be the 'fun' part. That's the downside of getting new electronics stuff - having to reconnect all the cables (in the right order, or else something won't work, usually).
Morgan, great job on your 'Conrail steamer'. I like it! I'd agree with what (somebody) said, either spraycan or airbrush can mess up on you. Your masking is probably every bit as important as what form of application you use (except for those fades that Todd was talking about, and that's another whole matter there).
Nik.n, that Shepherd needs to be 'untrained' from the ankle-biting habit. Maybe a squirt bottle of diluted ammonia water, just enough to spook him from biting/nipping.
Inch, hope the grandbaby gets there soon. Yeah, the roll of duct tape might be useful... (Good joke, too)

Jerry - the bumpers look good - and as you said about the price...
MRR club last night was some of us working on the back staging yard (others cutting gaps on sidings, I put in plastic in the gaps and fastened them in with some CA glue and then came back and trimmed the plastic down some), some cars on the RIP track, and test running trains on the mainline.
I also got in a Roberts Road mobile home kit. Want to have some variety for my trailer park (once I get to building it, that is). Decals for my MOW train aren't in yet. Ah, well.
I'll grab a spot in the window booth before all the lunch crew arrives.
Prayers will continue for healing and comfort for those in need of that (and hair...).

ROB, WOW! How do you get the "Bulged and Dented" look? and those rust streaks! WOW!
Nik..............The "bulged and dented" look, I think is more on how the picture came out. The rust streaks, well.......................A fine tip brush, oil paints (windsor newton), and powders (bragdon). I'm trying something new. I'm mixing up all of the powders, a rust color oil paint, and some mineral thinner (for the oil paints).
Then dabbing the paint brush VERY lightly for the rust pits.

ROBBY P: Another amazing job Sir! I'm going to have to try your tip for those rust streaks, I see a brush purchase in my future. That's one technique I have had zero luck with...so mostly gave up on. Thanks for the new tactic!

Had to go interview a photographer today, he's going to be offering digital photo classes soon, and THAT editor thought there might be a nice "fluff" piece to be had. So...I get there a little early, and the guy is finishing up a shoot of a lion. Yep, a lion. Well...a stuffed, taxidermied lion. So, I get some good shots of the guy working. Afterwards I get the grand tour of his little photo kingdom. The guy sure has dropped the bucks, I'll give him THAT. He's a friendly enough gent, but...he just kept regurgitating what I already saw on his website and blog. I kept asking for more info...he just recited the next two or three paragraphs of what's on the web.
I coulda done this one over the phone. Heck, I coulda just gone to his website and done a cut 'n paste job...
*sigh*
Sad thing is...he's a competent shooter...but, I really wasn't blown away by any of his w**k. I'm not saying I'm better, he's a portrait/commercial shooter, I do photojournalism. I'm just saying I've seen better. Now, if I could just figure out how to get paid what this guy charges per hour...
I "should" make a call today about lining up a feature on a fish farm....yep, you read right, a fish farm. I "should" go attack the yard again with the mower. I want to get back to w**k on the boxcars. A nap sounds good... *sigh* My wife says I'm living like a freelancer...not a bad thing, but sometimes I have almost too many "options" for the day.

Robby, the box looks amazing! Its an inspiration to those of us (well, me) that haven't even dabbled in weathering cars. I guess I'll have a RBF and a....ah, just the RBF will do. Nothing much happening, the plant is having Behr coming over today and tomorrow, so I'm doing my best impression of "staying busy" that I can do. Then on Thursday, we're having PPG come by and see "what we're up to".....jeez, how I dislike visits like this, they always want the plant to be spotless and yadda yadda..... Okay, okay, enough grumbling, time to sit at the RC and enjoy the RBF.
LSWrrJeff, not sure you saw my post, but ask to see the TV work without an HD source, unless you have HD cable at home.
What kind of vehicle. I only really know of a couple of diesel engines that really like fuel injectors, and they are the early Duramax diesels and the 6.9L Powerstrokes (and the powerstrokes like to tear up everything else too).
Robby- Ditto everyones remarks. I'm half tempted to show a picture of my first weathering attempt. It was a railbox too. I got off the bay for some change. I think the 4 dollars shipping was over twice the car. Place mine against yours and it would be like a bad stick drawing to a Rembrandt! Ya know just for fun and a laugh for us all, (some could really use one), I just might.

Robby, sounds like it would be manual labor and as long as you don't mind it, go fer it. I'd be asking questions like what if there isn't a derailment, do you still get paid, and speaking of pay, what is it? But that's just me. I'd definitely look into it, if it were me.
ROBBY P: Sounds like 100% grunt work, in all weather conditions, at all hours...and probably on an "on-call" basis. Sounds to me like they'd get the call, call/page bodies, load-up in the company van...and off ya go for a few days of fun in "Somewhereville," bunking down in the motel of the day. OR....it could be a "gypsy" operation, like it says, going from derailment to derailment. If you don't mind only being home a few days each month...it might be interesting, hopefully pays well.
"All expenses paid," hmmmm. Motel room for sure, and probably a per diem for your meals. I worked a job installing office furniture that had a deal like that. For out-of-town jobs, we got so much for the first day, then substantially less for each day after. It was "fun" being the only guy on the crew who did NOT have a criminal record, and did NOT have an alcohol and/or drug problem. I'm pretty sure one guy was a convicted drug felon...he was just a hoot 'n hollar to work with...
I'd be asking some questions of the muckety-mucks.
