Howdy Gang [:)] [C):-)] (hat week ya know) [:D]

Well after getting up at 3 am to be at work at 5 am and working a 10 hour day I am a little on the "tired" side. The sun is starting to set and it is 82 degrees here. We had bad fog this morning. It was kind of neat but dangerous to drive in and through . [;)]

I didn't even get to see any trains today. [:(] Come to think of it I have not even heard one. [:(]

I think bedtime is fast approaching and it us only 610. [:(] We ARE working Saturday and maybe Sunday. One good thing about the wire shop is, if they tell you that you are working THEY don't change their mind 25 times in 48 hours. [}:)]

I really was confussed about the title. I had to do a double take and also check out the number of pages. No way a new thread could post that many pages in just a day or two so I knew this way the right place, but still was confussed for a moment. [:(]

Well I must go. Duchess deserves some attention before I fall out.

Sleep well everyone. [;)]

der5997- I thought you had alift-out section. I was refering to the track joiners. The slide on connectors. On my h.o. layout, I put the connector on the permanent rail and opened up the other half so the rail of the lift off rail would just lay in/on it. This kept the electricity flowing and the tracks aligned.
Is that clearer? Or did I muddy the water some more?

Afternoon Coffee Clubber's. How's everyone been? Last post I made on here was back around pg 130 last week. This **** thing we all call WORK has kept me busy for the past week or so and then the family over the past weekend...you all know how that goes... gotta do the family thing since it's the weekend! Anyways, I starving. Let me start w/ a Double Moch Iced Coolatta... oops...wrong coffee shop! Shame on me! How about a 32oz coffee w/ 3 1/2 sugar, 4 1/2 cream, frozen w/ 2 scoops of chocolate ice cream...hold the whipped cream...unless it's cool whip. Oh... and a menu as well please? Thanks

Well now there's a problem Elliot hogs the majority of the good stuff so by this time of day we are normally out! Unless you like decaf. As to the menu well again it wasn't Gooooood Eeeenough for
Elliiiii-ot . So it's out at the printers getting redone. Not to worry the conversation is still good and cheap and if you haven't figured it out it's "National Dump on Elliot Day" and if it is succesful we'll change it to "National Dump on Elliot Week"[:D]

Sorry Elliot I have you in my sights now!!

Not much doing as I'm still working in the garden and putting in a new trellace and staining some old fencing. It's definitely fall here and hopefully I have another few weeks before the cold settles in for good.

Anyway time to get dinner on the go. Tonight it will be Shake-n-bake ala Fergie

Bon Apitite
Fergie

That's OK Fergie, I'm a Big Boy, and a big target. I can handle it, unlike a certain yellow railroad we all know. I hear they have things so jammed UP they're turning business away. What a mess!!! (Crap, that's another buck in the jar.)[swg]

By the way, we have the Google ads confused on this page. They can't tell what we like around here. BBQ sauce on trains????[:0][8][:o)][;)]

Okay sports fans, the pre-game show is on for tonight's Game 3 between the Cardinals and the Red Sox, so I've got to go get the popcorn ready.

I would like to report that I did some more work on my hill test section this afternoon, and should have some 'in progress' pictures tomorrow. Just so you all know that I'm not just laying around waiting for the game.

Best wishes, prayers, good luck charms, curse-reversing potions, all gratefully accepted.

"Reverse the Curse"

I'll be back with you tomorrow, come what may. Hopefully by then RailImages will be back up and I'll have my NdeM logo back!

Hasta maƱana,

Ed

Lousy Food?? What lousy food?

Jim: Although out of all the baseball teams I like the Cardinals the best, I still like stock car and drag racing a lot better!

Which, BTW, reminds me: Do we have any stock car or drag racing fans on the Coffee Shop??

Good Evenin' Everybody,
Today was a better day. Shawna has started to perk up a little bit this evening. She's still sick, but she feels a little better, which is good news. We'll take it. We still don't know about school. She emailed all her professors last week, and we haven't had any responses. Tomorrow we'll do it again and start being very persistant. Nice and polite, but persistant. Thank you all again for your thoughts, words and prayers. They really help.

I like the new slogan. Even though it's not so; the coffee, tea and food are great here at the coffee shop. It reminds me of a place that I frequented in Tarpon Springs, Fl. a long time ago. The sign said " Fast Eddie's Seafood, Warm Beer, Lousy Food. The shrimp were great, and if the beer had been any colder, it would have been a beer slushy. It was a good place.

Fergie, the steak and potato salad sound superb. The seasoning makes all the difference. If your thinking of using "Great Stuff" or some other brand of expanding foam behind the rocks, Ed's idea about thin layers and small amounts is right on. It's really good, but it really expands a lot. A litle dab will do it.

Ed, Schilling's performance was awesome. I know he makes megabucks, but he earned it that night. That was really something.

Chris, I still follow nascar a little bit, but not as much as I used to. I was heavily into drag racing, running modified production and modified sports classes a long time ago. It was a ball. It's also very addictive, so it's hard just to be a spectator.

I'd better go for now, It's getting late and tomorrow will be busy.
Have a great evening, everybody,
Tom

I was wondering if there was some kind of censorship in this shop. Just before thte Cardinals' game I posted a reply to Phil, and a comment on the railimages bandwidth thing. That post hasn't showed up. Has anyone had this happen before?
For what it's worth, here's what I tried to post earlier.
QUOTE: Yeah, they exceeded bandwidth usage again. Part of the problems that come with their success. Hopefully they are working on correcting the situation. This has happened several times before, usually around the end of the month.

Well, if bangert1 can advertize, so can I. Just to say that all that bandwidth doesn't come cheap. If we want railimages to continue to do what they do for us, then how about those who haven't yet become contributors consider doing so.

Phil:
QUOTE: der5997- I thought you had alift-out section. I was refering to the track joiners. The slide on connectors. Is that clearer? Or did I muddy the water some more?

Ah! All becomes plain. My movable sections have no joiners except the fiddle yard. That needs them for a positive connect on tracks aligning at an angle. The door module and the window section don't have them for speed of release reasons. (Fire safety) However, this raises maintenance issues before and in each opperating session. I may have to resort to joiners, despite Bob's kind words about the track!

When I came up just now the Cardinals' game was in the 4th, and they were 1 down against whoever it is they are playing. [;)] Go Cardinals (but we won't say where, will we Ed?[}:)])
Time to say Goodnight, and God Bless.

Well the foam is in and the back of the mountain is, how shall I say....... gone.

The only way to inject the foam was to remove the other side and inject it in. BTW High expansion foam and thin coats aren't synonomus. But this was not an issue as I had enough areas for expansion that no bulging has occurred.

John: I've lost three posts that way. I don't have a clue why!

Anyway Time to say goodnight
Goodnight

Thanks Tom, sometimes just saying something is lousy calls more attention to it. I'll bet that place with the lousy food and warm beer has a lot of cuirous people walk in. A lot of people have yet to discover the Coffee Shop. Why should we have all the fun? [;)]

Well Ed and everyone else, how about them Red Sox? Curse? What curse? They dominated St. Louis tonight. It would be so cool if they won tomorrow night. That would be 8 games straight, and half on the road. So, If they win, what's next?[swg]

You guys are sure a talkative bunch! We are filling pages like they laid track on the transcon back in 1869!
Welcome to Pistol Pete and piemandan, hope you enjoy the forum. We have some fine folk here.
Ed and Teffy- My girls dad worked for NS for 35 years, she thinks my trains are great, and she has already suggested we get some more scenery before winter sets in so she can help me make trees! As for how I camp, we load up our Jeeps and 4 wheel up a mountain, then set up our tents and base camp from there while we drive the trails. But I know what you're saying about getting too old for sleeping on the ground, I spent the first night this last trip on a sleep pad with my sleeping bag, and in the morning it took 4 cups of joe to set me right. I have a cot that gets me off the rocks and keeps me warm. I'll take the extra time to set it up first from now on.
Priced an Amtrak trip to Savannah or Seattle today, they both cost about the same, alot more than I expected. Looks like we'll drive when we go. Too bad, but maybe we can take the train on a shorter and more affordable ride sometime.
Waiting for the snow to fly, but it's still not too bad. Just started raining a bit ago, 'sposed to last all weekend, but it should be broken enough to get Halloween in.
Hang tuff, guys!

Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Just a very quick one as i'm just doing a fast check-in while junior gets ready for school. Just so I don't forget to comment today, let me get this off my chest.....

How about them Red Sox!!!!!!!

I think Schilling's gutty performance has rubbed off on all the other pitchers as well. Even Pedro shrugged off those first inning blues and seemed to get stronger as he went along. I had visions of disaster when Nixon fell in that water in right field to start off, but things turned out very well.

Now is when things start getting dangerous. The Red Sox have set themselves up in a position where "The Curse" can kick in at any moment. I'm not giving up my worrying yet.

As that famous old Yankee, Yogi Berra, once said, "It ain't over 'til it's over".

"Wait 'til this year!"

"Reverse the Curse"

Hasta luego,

Ed

I can't wait until Baseball season is over so everyone can get back into Hockey..... Oh I forgot no Hockey[%-)]

It'll just have to be trains and food.

Now that I've alienated some, which I'm renowned for, good morning everyone.

And welcome to our new "guests". BTW we have a rule in my house, once you've been shown the fridge, you're no longer a guest so help yourself but don't take the last cold beer, I'll split it with ya!

JPowell: we already have a John (DER5997) so can we call you JP or do you go by another nickname?

Phil: I envy you as you seem to be living a full life these days. Things must be serious if you've met "Dad". I'll be camping this weekend out at Scout Camp. The temps will be hovering around the freezing mark and I have the option of sleeping in a heated lodge with 20 youth and 10 leaders or in an Adirondack . (Bunk house with three sides enclosed, fourth side has a tarp over the front of it) with another leader, who snores?

Yep you guessed it, love those great outdoors! Lisa's indoors as she is camp cook. She doesn't love the great outdoors.

Teffy: How do you spell Loy's? I'm trying to get their website.

Tom: Teffy mentioned something about your switch machines being overly simple and
inexpensive. What's the deal with these and are you willing to share the technology with the rest of us? My curiousity is peaked.

Well I got work in Dad's yard today

So I'll talk later

Good Morning All:

For those of us that don't keep up with baseball amoungst all of youse "go cardinals" and "go red socks" you need to tell us [blue]who won./b] Please don't expect us to get off the football page for a baseball score. I don't remember who (I think John) told us that the presidential election is going to be predicted by this weeks Redskins game, so lets watch something with some action and see if we get Kerry or Bush.

I'm sorry and glad to hear that other people are having an accasional (SP) problem with posting as I've had that problem and figured I'd just hit the wrong button. I'm like KRUMP - I'm also a techno-twit . I'm going to have to remember that term as it's so appropo (SP) for me.

We can take another John after all we've got two Phil's.

Fla/Phil:
On my drop bridge I use a piece of track about elevan inches long and have soldered two rail jointers on one end and cut some of the spikes on the other end so another rail jointer will slide back and forth. I attach the end with the soldered jointers to the track, line up the track and then pu***he slide jointers into place. One time when I droped the section without taking the track out I found out that the track will go into orbit like a knuckle spring. But it's a heck of a lot easier to find, I didn't even need the optivisor.

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010

I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017

Morning All !

Yall been busy lately
Why did Elliot change the topic into what he did? [%-)]
I did not post my dutch cooking with mayonaise recipes did I ?
I only read again some mouthwatering BBQ stuf so maybe he better change it to

" The Coffeeshop service with a [:)] GOOD FOOD , NEW CHEF! " [C=:-)] "

and how about them slogan war: are we supposed to post things like :

Model Terriffic, Model Union Pacific !

Don't ship in any bark, ship it on the ARK!

Now about the trainshow;
have seen a lot! I have been there one day, but could easily spend two so
much to look at !
they had about 900 yards of stalls, filled with new and lots preowned
models: price range $3,= p to $2500, most of it european, and some US models
but nothing interesting for me. I get much better deals in the US ! ( I came
across quite a few run down Fleischmann and Marklin F's at prices one can
buy 2 brand new US top brands.I must confess my standards has risen over the
years: no more Walthers Trainline, ModelPower or Mantua for me, I picked up
nothing but a pile of old ( 1988) and not so old (2001-2002) Model Railroad
magazines, some Railroad Model Craftsman mags, some Kalmbach books: Diesels the first 50 years, Historical Guide to North American Railroads, Railroad
Hot Spots, and the seller threw in a Compendium of railroad Radio Frequencies for free. ( he could not imagine anyone interested in them, I had to fill him in whatf or these lists are used by US railfans )

There were also 50 lay-outs build up, I saw suitcase sized Z scale beauties:
houses all made of paper cut-outs, a 1,5 x 3 ft layout had 2000 hours of work in it.
Lots of HO modular layouts mostly freelanced , some up to 200 ft long, some diorama sized scenes,
Only 2 US prototype layouts this year, both freelanced, an N scale layout. and a Bachmann On30 mountain railroad layout wich had clouds, lightning and thunder build in, quite a spectacular show ( no rain though [:O] ),

FYI: here are some links:
http://www.eurospoor.nl/nl/bezoek/nieuws2004/buit/yeend.html these are
links to foreign participants. I specially loved the English prototype large scale layouts.

JP works for me..........................

Okay sports fans, just to show you that I haven't exactly been sleeping the whole time that you've been busily building turntables, tunnels, hills, and God knows what else, here are 4 small snaps of the progress on the one corner of the layout where I'm making my first attempt at foam hills and scenery. The rest of the layout still looks the same as it did a while ago, but I've discreetly edited those parts out of these shots.

Remember that I'm trying to go for a low rolling hill type effect, with just enough height to serve as a partial view block and to give some reason for all the curves. This has to stand up when it's not being used so I can't go for Rocky Mountain type verticality.

Here's one where I've just started to put the foam blocks in place.

Here I have done the first shaping with the surform tool.

Used lightweight spackling compound to smooth out the shape and to fill the cracks and voids. It sands down very easily.

Gave it a coat of paint. This is really too light, but it's what I've got and it will be totally covered with ground cover anyway. Looks a bit better with less blue in the shot.

Not a huge amount of progress, but enough to keep me from admiting total failure. I'll probably try some ground foam on part of this section in the next couple of days. Still looking for a suitable weed for tree armatures. Haven't found one yet.

Later,

Ed

Hi Ed,
I read you complaining about your progress, I have seen over the last month a door change into a layout with structures on it, landscaped and all, electrics connected,
IMO how fast would YOU like to go? I think it's awsome what you made so far! [tup]

Excellent progress Ed, better then mine. Snow will be a bklessing as it will mean the garden is finished for the season and I 'll have top hunker down in the basement and hibernate.

Lupo: We missed you and BTW just in case you missed it on the last page it's officicially "Dump on Elliot Week" so enjoy.

Well I've been lead astray (again) and will be recieving in the not so distant future one Empire Builder DCC set. Bob made me do it and hopefully I will live long enough not to regret it[:D]

After Bob's entrepid sojourn and showing me the ways of the DCC the seeds were sown and I believe if I am going to get full use and benifit from the layout then DCC was the only way to go. Time will tell the tale.

Teffy, Ed for president, is not Murphy, it's Blysard. He's one of the regulars over on the Trains Magazine forum, and a real railroader, not a modeler. Ed is very pasionate about railroading, a fact that is easily seen in reading his posts. He can be very outspoken at times, and generally has a good grasp of common sense, something that Washington is severely lacking these days. There are a couple of other people that have Ed for President in their signatures.

Jim and I, and a few others, bounce around from forum to forum, as our interests vary. This is part of where our massive post counts come from. It also means that we know the people in the other group. In addition to doing Trains Magazine, I do Classic Toy Trains, where Jim does not. That was what made Mookie's appearance here a few weeks ago so unusual, as like Ed, she doesn't model.

If we had to have a Texan in the White House, Ed would get my vote too.[swg]

Dad Gum:

I just got scooped!!!!! I saw that bigboyfergie bought a Digatrax Super Empire Builder and was going to offer speculation as to who it might be. I thought I'd throw some ideas in about Horizon or UP or Stewart but the cat is already out of the bag and poor Lisa has to pay for it. CONGRADULATIONS.

Tom:

His next command purchase can be a DCS200 and that will give him a chief set-up with a db150 as an auxallery or back-up

I'm sorry about the mess-up on the last post I'll have to get some guidance as to what I did wrong.

I'm at work and I've got to go

Ed: Very encouraging scenery shots[^] I'm going to use the sawdust and white glue mix instead of spackling compound, I think. It takes a while to dry, whichis a drawback, but it is "instant texture", and will hold both paint and ground foam. I really like the way even light paint hides the blue. I picked up a can of muddy green latex at the local hardware store a few years ago. Someone had had it mixed, but didn't like it. Got it for peanuts. I intended to use it as my base coat for ground cover. Perhaps the time is approaching to hide the blue! One thig i like about workiing with foam is the way even quite small off cuts can be made to work into the section one is building. I also lie the way it carves. I haven't tried shaping it with any kind of rasp. I fact, I may not. I'll see how I get on with carving, and filling in the gaps. I'm going for a more rocky appearance than your rolling hills, so can probably get away with less roundedness.

As you commented to me when I went for the "on sale" Prodigy at George's, "I hope you enjoy it".[:D] I can't see getting into sound any time soon, and then it will probably be under the layout speakers. (some of which have been in storage for getting on for 10 years, salvaged from old audio equipment from time to time).
When the present mountain building blitz subsides, then it will be decoder install time, then rigging up around the room ethernet cable and terminals. I'm going at this slowly, and budget is an issue too. I agree that DCC is the way to go, and this layout is wired for it. With two reverse loops and constant polarity changes on the main line as a result, DC just doesn't work for more than one train! I treid it with two after taking the latest photos, trying to get the two trains back to their starting points. The first one around a reverse loop sent the second backing down the track! [:O]
Noises from below indicate preparations for Dinner[dinner], so I will sign off. (but not out krump, I come in from "History" to the last page visited, and am signed in automatically it seems.)
