Chris, nope, live in the middle of a city of about 10,000, but the feilds are only a mile or two from me. I suppose it could be.

Ed, I let out a little celebration too, but the problem is that the Y****** (this word will be censord from now on) keep winning!!! The don't know the meaning of the word lose!!

roadtrp:
QUOTE: I'm up late running my trains. It puts me in a better mood.

You must have one fo those working layouts-the one's that give you some enjoyment. Mine just drives me crazy after the car comes off the track and the engine stalls for the 15th time. I never operate the layout after 8:00pm, otherwise I don't sleep.

Jim/Ed, Saw that thread too. Very well, shall we say-no, that's not a good word to say on here- well you know, I don't have to say it again!

Good news good news bad news.

Good News: It's a beautiful day here in WI, about the right temps and everything.[^]

Good News: Sore throught gone![:P]

Bad News: Still got a stuffy nose and I'm hacking up hair balls, so I can't go out and enjoy the weather!

As I write My own personal tissue box is sitting in my lap, with my own personal garbage can next to me. Waiting for my Dad to bring home luch from Damon's, gonna have some good ribs![dinner] I figure it's better to rest today so I can go to the meet tommarrow in Madison, rather than going out to lunch and infecting a few waitrises (sp?). 'Scuse me, I have to go blow my nose agai- a--a---choo!! ew boy- now Iz all stubbed ub again. Butter go-bye-bye.[B)]

Tom: Bob has been holding off in contacting you as he is unsure of his ETA. Once he gets a better idea he'll be in touch. Baltimore was a boom or bust deal depending on the Museum being open or not. Unfortunately according to their website they are still undergoing repairs and are not open to the public. Bob was going to try anyway as he was hoping to see the layout.

Glad I'm not a YANK-EEEEEEEEE fan youze guyze are hostile! Some day the Blue Jays will be back and in the running, They're just sharing the wealth right now.

Well no rail work today as I'm in the garden doing my fall cleanup and winterization.

Nice work and progress there Ed. when your finished come on up and give me a hand would ya? I'm always looking for someone to do my dirty work!!

Good Mornin Everybody,
It's a beautiful, cool crisp day in the mountains. The leaves are really starting to change now and the color is coming on strong. It may not be a banner year for foliage but it will still be beautiful. The coffee is wonderful this morning and I'm on my umpteenth cup so far. We've got a lot on the schedule today so I don't know how much railroading I'll get done, but that's OK.

Willy6, how are you coming on the scenery. That's a truly fun part of building a model railroading. The 2 structures I'm building, rather slowly, are mounted on bases which will be set into the layout. I'm doing the ground cover and stuff around them now and it really makes them look good.

Der, the PBS idea for the Fawlty Towers shows is a good one. That, like lots of other things, had slipped my mind. I've ordered from them before. We've got lots of audio tapes of Prairie Home Companion shows that we got from them. They are also very good. Are there any other PHC fans in the coffee shop? I've seen a few of John Cleese's business training films. They're extremely well done. They present a lot of good information and they're fun to watch. I never saw anybody snooze off in one of his films.

Ed, the loco service area looks good. Progress is being made.

Paul, I hope your son is recovering. Pnuemonia is nothing to take lightly. It's extremely serious. How are you feeling now?

Eastcoast, welcome to the coffee shop. Stop by often.

Roadtrp, I take you're not a Yankees fan. You have a lot of company in that. Running trains is really good therapy. It can make almost any day a lot better. Light rail systems make a lot of sense. Riding the train has to be more fun than driving and fighting your way through heavy traffic. It's much more efficient, less polluting than ten zillion cars and you get there in a much better mood. I think it's a idea whose time has come back.

Jim, we actually slept in a little this morning. I got up at 7 and got the coffee going, then woke Louise up at 7:30 with a really good cup of coffee ready for her. During the week the day starts a good bit earlier.

Fergie, so Teffy is going to be in Baltimore today. That should make for a good but busy day for them. Have you heard what his ETA is for here. I haven't, and I want to make sure everything is ready and give Bill some advance notice. It will be fun.

I'd better go and get the day started,
Have a great day everybody,
Tom

Yeah Jerry, due to a cash crunch and a not very optomistic outlook for the world series, we passed on the playoff tickets. We did them a couple years ago.

Glad you survived the light rail to the warehouse district. Channel 5 did piece on crime along the line last night after the game, and the warehouse district had the most reports, though none serous. The conclusion was that much of it was bar related, DUH!!

Gotta run, kids have bowling.[|)][|)][:O][;)]

Our management is sooooo bad. They could manage the Red Sox. The managements answer to are we working overtime is . . . Yes, awwww No, Yes . maybe . . . absolutely . . . NO MORE OVERTIME . . . everyone is working all weekend no exceptions . . . Sunday cancelled . . . No, you are working Sunday again . . . We will not work this weekend . . . Everyone works . . . No, Yes, Maybe, No, Absolutely, No, Yes, Maybe, No, Yes, No, Yes, No, Possibly, Forget it, BE HERE Or YOUR Fired, Everyone off.

I can't plan anything past 5 minutes from now. They change their mind 2 or 3 times a shift. Now we are not working this weekend after being told we had to. It is getting very frustrating too. [:(!] You make a phone call and tell friends you are off and will meet them somewhere, then have to call them back 30 minutes later and tell them now you can't because you have to work late. See what I mean. Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr [:(!] [:(!] [:(!]

Hey Ed [:)]

WHY did the skunk cross the tracks [?] [}:)] [;)]

(btw, the turtle has the weekend off, the fryer and I have a date [:o)] [:p] )

Since it is almost 430am I guess I should go take my nap. I am sure Duchess will have me up by 9 at the latest. Heck, I bet Tom and Bill, and E, and Dave and some others are already starting their day as it is 530 in the "mountains". [;)]

Everyone have a super great weekend. [:D] I am OFF, and if work calls I am NOT answering the phone. [:0] [:p] [:D]

On a happier note, did you see all of the pictures of Ed's layout?

I'm up late running my trains. It puts me in a better mood. After the game we went home to Eden Prairie and stopped at a Chevy's Fresh Mex for some tacos and margaritas. Unfortunately on Friday nights they have a VERY LOUD rock band playing in the bar, so we couldn't even hear ourselves think.

Our daughter and her boyfriend will be using our tickets for tomorrow. I hope there will be more games in the future. Oh well... if not we will get back about $800 of what we spent on the ticket strips, so I guess all will not be lost.

We took light rail last Saturday from the Warehouse District (we parked in the ramp there) to the Dome to watch the Gophers play Penn State. They won, but looked very ugly doing it. The Gophers will have to turn it up a notch if they want to make the Rose Bowl.

The light rail from the game back to the Warehouse District was VERY CROWDED. The Warehouse District is also ummm... very urban at 10:30 Saturday night. Especially for us children of the Suburbs. We survived though! [:D]

It is amazing how popular the light rail has been... it has been close to doubling projected ridership. I guess everyone loves a train!

I saw Ed's layout pics... very cool. I must get to bed now... it truly is quite late.

G'night!

Oh Jerry, I was afraid you were at the game. I watched from the cheap seats in my livingroom. It was ugly. Those that do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. I wish I could be more optomistic.

Maybe if you chant YAN-KEES-SUCK! enough tomorrow they will become disoriented and think they are in Boston. On second thought that might be a bad thing. At least Santana is pitching.

YAN-KEES-SUCK!
YAN-KEES-SUCK!
YAN-KEES-SUCK!
YAN-KEES-SUCK!
YAN-KEES-SUCK!

[:)]

That was kind of the chant du jour at the game tonight. Works well with that Boom-Boom-Bah they play in the Hump-Dome when trying to drum up a little excitement.

YAN-KEES-SUCK!

My wife and I were there and it was SO depressing for much of the game. I took my Homer Hankie, folded it into a band, and tied it around my upper arm to indicate that I was in mourning.

There were some dumb mistakes made that the Twins just don't usually make. Morneau made a really dumb play at first, and there were several base running mistakes that cost us outs and potential runs.

And, for better or worse, the Yankees are just one darned fine team. It is almost impressive that a team with one of the lowest payrolls in MLB (the Twins) can even hope to compete with them.

YAN-KEES-SUCK!

At least the bottom of the ninth was a little fun. Yankee pitcher Heredia came out and hit the first two Twins batters with his pitches.

YAN-KEES-SUCK!

All of a sudden we had two on and no outs. The Yankees dumped Heredia and brought in Sturtze. I really liked him. He faced two batters and the Twins got two hits, driving in one run. The Yankees got him out of there and brought in Rivera. He let two more base runners score, but got the Yankees out of the inning with the win.

Final Score was 8-4 Yankees.

It was a bummer game in many respects, but I was glad we stayed until the end. The goings-on in the bottom of the ninth provided the most fun there was in the game for Twins fans. It was kind of cool watching the Yankees have to bring in their ace closer to finish a game they had been winning by 7 runs before the bottom of the ninth.

Nothing like getting two of your batters hit to drive the crowd into a frenzy.

YAN-KEES-SUCK!

Tomorrow is another day.

My goodness Eastcoast, you do need a cup, or perhaps even a pot!!!![swg]

Well, you've come to the right place. Seriously though, have you ever considered Durabond for your plaster needs? It isn't really much good for casting, because it is fairly thick. It is great for carving though. It comes in a variety of setting times, 90 minutes is most common. It is normally used for drywall as an undercoat for deep repairs.

Do you ever wonder what kind of responses we'd get if this was called the, are you reaady for it? "The Whine Cellar; a place to stomp the grapes of wrath".

Probably not a good idea!

But that's the beauty of this Coffee Shop, you get to 'pine about all sorts of stuff that you know little about and the gang educate you effortlessly as you go along.[8D] Also, I bet you do so have stuff to tell us that you've found out about model RRs that would help us. Like, what brand of plaster was that, and where can we get it if we need to? BTW, the quickest setting stuff I've come across recently (and I wouldn't want to use it on the layout, but one never knows[:D]) is a cement for patching concrete in wet conditions. Man, that stuff is fast.

Sounds like you are into acrylics there. So if the building you were waiting for was also painted in acrylics, and you read the entire thread while it dried, you are some awesome speed reader![8D]

Well folks it's after 11 p.m. here on the island. A perfect Fall day today, and we are going to see the colours tomorrow as the forecast is for more of the same. So I will wish you all a very Good Night, and God Bless.

Evening all,

Okay, had my little tv table with my tools and raw materials in front of me this afternoon, but I’ll confess to not getting much done from 3:00 on. The Bosox tried to give one away, but came through in the end. I can’t complain.

Sorry about the sore throat, Noah. Medicine and rest. [insert 'Doctor' smilie]

Jim, in one way the overtime will help, think of it as more money to spend on trains!! Yeah, I saw the “Dead skunk in the middle of the rail” thread over in Trains. I wouldn’t have gotten that close to take the shot and give it the smell test.

Paul – there’s really nothing more (in the way of significant structures) to add to the engine area, I’m just struggling to find an arrangement that I like. In the photo I have the elevated diesel and fuel oil tanks on either side of the engine house doors. I’m not sure I like that. I’d prefer to have the water and fuel oil columns next to one another, but can’t find a good way to do that. I just need to stop obsessing about it, accept the fact that with the space restrictions I have that I’m not going to have the perfect arrangement, and go with whatever I can work out. Remote control via edge of layout switches might be an option. I wasn’t thinking about that.

Pneumonia??? He needs to be careful. That can be very dangerous. And now you’re tired and have a headache??!! What’s going on around here, anyway.

You’ve had the star since 50 posts. You’re probably one of the few who isn’t actually aware of them. Ssshhh, we’re not supposed to discuss them. The “Star Police” will get on our case. [:D]

derJohn – That building is the engine house before I cover the framework with something resembling corrugated sheet metal. Remember, it’s only the mock-up. It looks a lot better in the small photo version than it does in real life. Remember it’s made out of toothpicks, shish-ke-bob skewers and thread. Some will show, as it’s usual down here to have this type of building mostly open (because of the heat), with just roof and half walls.

Yeah, Chris, that was the first major “time out” of the hobby for me, and I didn’t even have my own car!!

If you want to just have something small to use for photos, build a small 12” x 24” photo diorama out of foam. That’s what I did (did you see the little photos of my diorama that I posted here before?). But if you can find the space to hide a module vertically in your closet you can operate as well as take photos. Worth looking at one of those options.

I don't know, you've been past that stage, you tell me!![;)]

I probably will make a module--I need something to take mrr photos on!

Jim:
I take you live around St. Louis...?

And I know what you mean, about what you typed right before all the smileys![:p]

I guess there is nothing wrong with collecting--It would for one thing mean that I could have enough equipment to start a railroad and only have to buy lumber, scenery, and a few buildings once I have the room for a layout. I prefer Kato and Athearn over P2K, but I would buy from P2K if they made something I want. (Isn't it always that way...[:D])

Noah:

Do you live fairly close to any fields? I had a cold kind of like that for a while, I got it just when all of the grain dust was being stirred up by the combines and stuff.

Well I finally got my copy of MR, I think I will build the BN crew shed in it, only paint and letter it for the CB&Q, of course. And seeing what the GEVO and the ACe look like was pretty interesting too, but the GE model is a lot better looking than the EMD compitition. EMD should have kept all SD series models designed just like the SD70MAC.

This just in Teffy is South of Boston and is looking for a siding for the night. He's hoping to see the Museum of Transportation in Baltimore tomorrow.

Tom and Jim: there was some confusion regarding the photos. As of last night Bob thought they were for me, That's why I never forwarded them today. However Bob just called and asked if I would forward them. So consider it done.

Paul: I hope your son gets over his illness soon. BTW we serve more pinion in this her cafe then anywhere else. John's 'pinion, my 'pinion Elliot's 'pinion. See, everyone has an 'pinion here. 'cept sometimes it's brewed a little too strong for some. [;)]

Get well soon, don't want to spoil a perfectly good weekend being sick! We'll be thinking of you.

Ed: What is that loco service building? When it's done will that superb detail show?

Yes, surprising isn't it?[:O]

Oh no! We tried the "more tofu in the diet" thing a few years ago, but kinda drifted back to full bore carnivore mode after a while. Big bro's wife eats no red meat because of the BSE thing, which I guess was pretty scary in the UK. He would like to eat beef, but doesn't. Not even in resturants where he could without interfering with the domestic arrangements.[dinner]

Well, the afternoon is wearing on, and there's other stuff to do before dinner.
See you later maybe.

Big SIGH OF RELEIVE. I was concerened there for awhile.

Ed. That engine terminal looks pretty good and complete. What else do you have to add? What about making switch throws that are on the edge of the layout? I've made some by mounting dpdt slide switches on the edge of the layout. I drill a hole through the button and run a piano wire under the table to the turnout. I'll take some photos and E-mail them to you.

Have any of you tried Pinion coffee? My daughter brings it from New Mexico for us. I really enjoy it. She also got us a new coffee pot for our annerversay. Ours gave out yesterday.

Well our son is in the hospital with phnewmonia. SPELL CHECK! Any way, you can figure that out. No mater how old they get thay can still drive you nuts worring.

I'm going to lay down for awhile. I woke up at 4am with a terrable headach and am tired. I'll get back later tonight.

I just noticed. I've got a star. How 'bout that.

Paul [8D]

Here is the coffee shop. We are still here thank God. You must have made that first cup pretty strong [;)] but Bergie didn't boot us.

Ed [:)]

Thanks for the rain, we really needed it. It started just AS I got home last night. Duchess is not too happy with it as she hates to get wet and would really like to GO for a walk if you know what I mean. [;)]

Well it is Friday and I have the Monday blues, got to work all weekend. [:(] After our management told us NO MORE OVERTIME the suddenly have changed theirs minds. My question really is, "What Mind?" I don't think management has a mind. They can't seem to plan, but yet everything is the workers fault who actually build the planes. Not sure how that happens but it does remind me of the joke (which I can't remember well enough to post here) about the guy in the hot air balloon who is lost and asking people for directions. It turns out that even though he is the one who is in control he doesn't know how to operate the balloon, how to find his way, or even land the thing. Yet it is everyone's fault that he passes, yes, typical management.

And on a lighter note . . . [:)] . . . at least it is payday. Yes, that means I can cry all the way to the bank. [;)]
In the trains.magazine thread is a topic that in the title claims to be gross and not for the faint hearted. Awwww . . . don't look into that thread before a meal. You might change your mind about eating that meal if you do. And don't look into that thread just after eating a meal either. But we won't go there. [:)] [:D]

Well it is noon, it is raining, and I have to go to the grocery store.

Everyone have a nice day, and don't forget to play with the trains. [:D]

John, I better watch my back I guess! But I do belive there is one other power at work here which is stronger than all of ours. That power can be summed up in one word-Farve. Farve will pull us through one of these weekends, you can bet on it. He has too much of a desire to win to just suddenly stop. That or maybe we should start giving him concutions before every play! No, not really, that would be bad.

Well, Like I said yesterday, got the day off, but just my luck, I go and get sick! I got a sore throat been bothering me, so not been getting a whole lot done. I still feel pretty good though. Just been resting. Better get back to resting I suppose, so see ya later

Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Had a couple of to-do items come to the top of DW’s short list yesterday, so I had to take care of them. Ergo, no model railroading. Temperature staying in the mid-80’s with intermittent periods of rain / cloud / sun. So overall I can’t complain too much.

Red Sox are on today at 4:00 Eastern time. Playing at home. It actually wouldn’t surprise me to see them win either today or tomorrow and finish off the Angels. “The Curse” really starts to kick in when they get closer to the end. Lose in the first playoff series and you just look like any other mediocre team. Collapsing just before crossing the finish line requires years of practice to get right. [:D]

QUOTE: JP: Let's Go Red Sox!!!! 2-0 ALDS lead over the Angels now...tomorrow will be a 3-0 lead!

Another citizen of Red Sox Nation surfaces!! But a 3-0 series “lead” would be better termed “winning the series” as it’s only 5 games. Let’s hope so!

QUOTE: derJohn: Since we are in full mock up mode, the containers on the dock are blocks of wood painted with whatever paints were handy the morning of Bob's visit! At $6+ Canadain for the "real" thing, I'm sticking with these for a while.

And why not? They look fine to me.

QUOTE: … Just to add ... to the John Cleese / Fawlty Towers thing. Don't forget that those 13 episodes grew out of a serious business venture of Training films for front desk staff!

Were there really only 13 episodes??

Belated congrats to Noah on picture of the day. I don’t usually click over there to see what the picture is, but maybe I ought to do so more often. It was a very nicely composed shot, Noah.

‘Ugly’ because it takes money away from model railroading!! [:)]

QUOTE: … it might be a good thing not to build a layout at the moment because in a little over a year I'll have a car…

Well there goes another model railroading hobby put on hold for a few years. First comes the car, then the girls, then college, then work……… Or is it first the girls, then the car……. [;)]

You say you’d like to build a module. That’s probably your best bet. It doesn’t really need much space at all since it can be taken apart and stood up against a wall in your closet when you’re not actively working on it. Why not consider it more?

I’m still wrestling with how to arrange things in the loco servicing area. Seems like I have too many things to cram into too little space. Plus, anything high, like the diesel and fuel oil tanks, or the water tank, tend to block access to the manual switch throws for the turnouts in the area. I suppose I may need to simply omit a couple of items. Here are a couple of shots showing the pieces I’m playing around with. The structures, including the framework for the enginehouse, are all temporary, just there to allow me to decide on space requirements and arrangement.

Just so you know I haven’t been totally ignoring the layout these past few days!!!

Hasta luego,

Ed

Chris [:)]

It doesn't hurt to collect some locos especially the Proto 2000 series as they can be DCC ready very quickly. I have been collecting for years, a loco here, a few cars there, well you know, just getting what I like. They can be kept in the box and don't take up much room. Plus things that are available now that you do like might not be available 5 years from now. So it doesn't hurt to plan a little for the future. I understand not having much/or any room for a layout and I understand having other "things" where your money can be put. I certainly understand the car thing and shortly after the car thing comes the "girls" thing. [:D] [;)] [:D] [;)] [:D] And the girls thing really takes the $ $ $ , doesn't it guys <wink wink> [;)] [:D]

Well, a man has got to do what a man has got to do. We understand Chris, and will support your decision whatever you do. No one can walk in your shoes but you. However, we all will be happy to walk WITH you as your friends.

It seems like Teffy has been gone for ages, man what a trip. And gas prices are on the rise again, I bet he doesn't like that.

Well, I guess I will check out a few other things.

Everyone take care. [:)]
