Now let me tell ya, you guys are writing maniacs! I was only off for 4 days and you filled up 5 pages! Sure takes awhile to catch up, but you don't want to miss anything, as it's all good.
Christopher- can't blame you for not wanting to go KCS in N, those handrails would be crazeeeeeee.
Tom- L&N fan, eh? A great RR, where we camp is about 200' above that line, and I have spent bunches of time sitting on the cliff watching my own model railroad. I just wish I could get my trees to look as good. It's CSX now, but still a good show. We'll be going there this Fri, and by Sat I hope to be hearing the horn echoing thru the hollers.
Last Fri, myself and a sheriff's deputy went to Richmond In, and visited RT's Hobby House, and next door Veach's Toy Store. I recommend them both very highly. Both have a good selection of RR items, plus tons of car, airplane and (oh yeah!) ship models. Prices are ok, and the people are friendly. Might just make them my LHS'.
On Sat, had a postponed 50th B-day party, had some Boat Drinks and good burgs, did some minor four wheeling and laughed ourselves silly. Just what life needs to be. All we needed was a train, and as I was driving home, CSX obliged with a CSX/CR/UP lashup running hard thru Muncie.
Finally heading to the mountain in Va this Fri, seems like all of our lives have been put on hold by this years hurricane season, but it looks like it might be winding down- and Fla phil, emeraldisle and others are still with us, so we have alot to be thankful for.If there is anything you guys need, let us know and we'll see what we can do.
If I don't check in for awhile, it's because I'm campin' like a fool, but like a bad penny, I'll be back.

Well the heavens opened up this morning and I think we got our monthly rain allotment in about an hour. It's rain'n cat's and big game so I suspect I'm relegated to the basement. Then again I do have item three on the list (stove pipe) that has to be repaired.

Now I have to prepare a winter game plan for the MESS.

Paul: The section under the roundhouse and yard is 1" foam. The upper main line behind the yard in on foam everything else is spline, cork and plywood.

The history of the layout is piece meal at best. Originally, the bottom section was a single oval with two sidings and an upper "Y" (now the loop). I was given this about 8 years ago by a friend who gave up the hobby (scary). Please note the basement has only been finished within the last six years. (lots of dust, which still clings to the equipment.)

Of that original layout is about 2' of yard track, which will be replaced someday as it is brass. That section has been widened and lenghtened and is now a 5' x 11' with an inner and outer track mounted on foam risers. everything has been tacked on in stages as I neede more room for cars.

As I said to Bob the other day, I've only gotten back into the hobby seriously within the last year or so as other commitments and responsibilities have burned up any and all free time, funny how family life and studying will do that!

Knowing what I know now from this forum would have changed the construction of the layout considerably as some of the techniques incorporated are better then others and would have resulted in a single dual means of construction. I would have scavenged the original layout and gone with plywood for the yard and spline for the main lines, as this would have given me smoother transistions. And No I'm not starting from scratch!

Ed: I'm not scheduled to go back until the end of November, No I'm not lucky, I'm burning up annual leave which has been amassed over the last several years. Going on training and courses will do that to the leave bank. It's not good for me to be on leave for extended periods of time as I burn money as there is no tomorrow and I get bored very quickly. Hard to work on the RR all day. I need to come up for air on a regular basis. Please don't get me wrong as most people would love the time off that I have but again to much of a good thing is not always the best thing. Which is one reason I'm contemplating a 9 to 5 job. It would be a normal life! and not being away six months of the years and working weird hours.

Ed: I contacted the decal company and rec'd a reply from Colin. Have you had work done by him before? And if so how's the quality and resolution of his imaging?

No, I picked the site up when I was thinking about doing some custom decals (still thinking about it). I don't remember what forum I found it on, but several people had used him and spoke well of the work. I have no experience with him.

Are they much thinner than other roads? The handrails on Atlas N Geeps and their Trainmaster are to my eye pretty close to prototype, and bend a lot if they have to. So go for it Christopher, get Normal, and leave the Horribly Oversized![;)] [:p]

Speaking of satellite systems, out here on the Nova Scotian Eastern Shore the cable doesn't come down our way and we don't have high speed internet either. I've opted for a satellite downlink for the computer. I'm running Windows XP, and an upgrade to the Service Package for XP came in the other day. Since then, the satellite modem wouldn't work [:(] [V] [}:)]. About 30 minutes ago I phoned the satellite company's customer service, got through right away, explained to the techie what had happened. He said "Go to start, click on this, uncheck that box, click restart, and it should do it." I said, "You've met this before then?" "Oh yes", he said, "Oh yes indeed!" "The XP service package firewall won't work with our software."
Anyway, best quick fix for a tech problem I've encountered in quite a while. It did the job, too[:D][8D]

Fergie: I forgot to say just now that I've put the track nails Bob talked about for fixing your too narrow gauge problem in the mail. As I dropped the letter in the box I rememberd that I hadn't gone in and looked up the post code. So, it may take a day or two longer than the usual Canada Post warehousing time.[:D]

John and Ed: As far as I'm concerned Sat TV is over rated. Instead of 50+ channels of nothing on cable, you can get 600+ channels of nothing.

Paul: I do Mexican too. the spicier the better. Lisa makes a mean Chili. Her special ingredient is a stick of Chris Brothers TNT Pepperoni cubed and fried up with the onions before the beef goes in.

Believe it or not I spent the better part of the morning (should be spelt mourning) crunched up under the control panel installing a switch machine. Had to go through the control panel cover, cut through a 1" x 4" with a chisel and hand saw. Not a very productive day.

Had better luck in the garden, though they are calling for frost tonight.

So Elliot are we about to see some more fire works? Napoleon never had it so good!

Couldn't agree more. We've cut our 600+ to a useable amount by subscribing to just a few packages. Still we are left with the choice of far too many opportunities to watch stuff we have no interest in. These days it seems we tune in the Brit comedies, BBC World news, Discovery, and the Weather Network. That's about it. 10 channels on a regular basis, I'd say. Why do we bother? Local reception is CBC snow or CTV snow.
The satellite music channels are good, we quite often have that on while we are chatting with guests. (RR guests get the model RR videos, no sound[:p])
Our satellite receiver and our radio can tune in some of the same stations. Since the satellite signal has to go 23000 miles out and then back, it takes longer. Then, there's the extra circuits in the receiver itself. Bottom line, there's an interesting time gap between the two. I found this out about a month or so ago. The effect was neat when a particular solo artist appeared to sing a duet with herself. It really worked![8D]

You don't get that on cable I suspect!

Big_Girl: Mrs der was wondering if the cookies were real or virtual. If virtual, and we have our computers set to not accept cookies, how are you going to make the delivery?[:p]

Good Evening Everybody,
It was another good day in the mountains today. I got zero model railroading done, but I did get started on some other things that needed doing. Tomorrow will be a better day. There are some errands to run in the morning, then the afternoon will be spent working on the railroad. That sounds like a fair division of time to me.

Fergie, the layout pics are great. I really enjoyed them and the description of it. It's a good looking layout. I'll bet the bananna peppers do spice burgers up considerably. Sounds good. Big difference from bell peppers.

I couldn't agree more about TV. We have satellite because when I moved up here there was no cable, and the "local" statrions are all 100 miles away on the other side of the mountains. Despite careful selection of packages and paring down, we have lots of stuff we never watch.

Fla Phil, I too am a Florida native, just one who migrated to the mountains. I was born in Jacksonville and grew up at Jax beach. The first few times I was up here in winter I thought I'd never get warm again.

Ed, I enjoyed the Eng 101. I don't recall the play, but the point is very true. Only what we've given away will go with us. That's worth remembering.

Better go for now. It's about time for the VP debate. It should be very interesting.

I was all inspired by Ed's foam mock up buildings. I went ahead and did mock ups for my stations, and have just tonight finished as far as I'm going with them. Only one is based on a foam block, and even it has lots of card. I can't seem to cut foam straight, so it turned out sort of Canadian Rockies log cabin stationish


The rest are all card and sign board (the stuff that's like cardboard boxes but plastic) as a base. 2 are halves of a Knox Gelatin Box cut down. The Upper Level Terminal is a plastic model extended by passenger shelters in card etc.

Well Ed, the Twins and the Sox are now one step closer to a head on collision. I didn't watch the Sox this afternoon. They won in convincing style. The Twins played a nail biter, 2-0. I'm not sure which one of us found that more satisfying. God that felt good when they called back that home run in the 7th., and Torii Hunter is the greatest. Five double plays! That hasn't been done in the post season in 90 years. That record is older than..... sorry.

We can't, this is the train related version of politics. It will go away when the time comes. Athearn is out of the picture, MDC never really was in the picture. UP still has Lionel. MTH has Lionel, DCS, DCC, BLI, and God knows who else to deal with, so we still have lots to discuss. You are always welcome to join in, or not. Your choice.

My ex wife liked soap operas, they made me want to puke. But this is about trains, and our hobby, a subject near and dear to my heart.

Since we are discussing tv shows, etc., I will say this, 1) I don't really watch much tv at all [:0] and 2) a few years ago (ahem--don't ask, don't tell [;)] ) one of my favorite tv shows was Fawlty Towers. I have always like John Cleese and think he is one of the greatest comedians of all time. (Sorry to hear of Rodney Dangerfield's death though, he will be missed.) In my younger days ( why just yesterday of course [;)] ) I thought the Monthy Python movies were hilarious, however, since it has been several years since I have watched them I think I might not be as appreciate of their humor now as opposed to them.

Funny thing, my mother is 85 years old. A few years ago when I was visiting my parents I discovered they both like to watch a show about a department store set in England AND much to my surprise my mother also was watching Benny Hill [:0] [:0] [:0] . Not only was she watching Benny Hill she was laughing at the show. Personally I thought he was risque but she like him and the show, go figure.

It would be nice if Teffy would drop by a libray and post a few lines to keep us informed of his trip. Our leaves have no color, they are either green or brown. We have not had much color here in years. [:(] I think part of it is our summers seem to be hot and dry, more so than usual. Some of the leaves are falling, and we have been having some wind which does help them fall. I am enjoying the cooler weather though.

Hopefully the "cane" season is winding down but now a volcano seems to be taking their place. Very scary event and I feel badly for those close to it. For some reason people have been flocking to the area to see it. Not me, I am fine right here.

Well since it is almost 430 am I guess I will take a nap. Duchess has actually been letting me sleep till 9 am the last few mornings. I really appreciate it too. [:D]

We had our first frost this morning, which made for a chilly bike ride. However it will bring forth some amazing colours for Teffy, who should be enroute for Prince Edward Island today.

Jim: I suspect with Bob's pace he doesn't get much time to find a library and post. Apart from passing through Halifax he's been seeing mostly rural and country settings something akin to Maine's scenery. He's now bound for Prince Edward Island to see Anne of Green Gables. BTW the show with the department store is called "Are You Being Served" Personaly I enjoyed Fawlty Towers and when did Rodney Dangerfield die?

Paul: We all need a plan, How else can we justify procrastination and the spending of large amounts of money? How could any Government justify spending Billions on stupidity if they didn't have a plan to justify it? Plans are good, they don't leave dents when you fling them. BTW I'll stick to my 5000 square feet of grass thankyou, as it can be cut in 30 minutes!

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's a chilly morning in the mountains today. The thermometer on the porch says 38 degrees. Yes that is farenheit. It's about time to bring some firewood in and get ready for the ceremonial first fire of the season. It's going to be a great day today. There are some errands and odds and ends to do this morning, then it will be a railroad day. I need to do some straightening up and neatening up in anticipation of Teffy's arrival. Then I may just run some trains.

Willy6, welcome to the coffee shop. The coffee and tea are always on and always good. The conversation is good too. As Big Boy says, the MR version of politics does come up from time to time, as these situations are of interest and important, but the conversation stays civil. That's a good thing.

Big Boy, I thought your analogy was very good. Like politics, we're all affected by what happens within the model railroading industry. There is a limited amount we can do as individuals, but we can do some things, and we can make our opinions known.

Paul, I do have a set of plans for my railroad. They were drawn about 10 years ago. The concept has stayed pretty much the same but the plans themselves were made obsolete long ago by changes that occured during construction or that suggested themselves after I started running trains. Louise is Irish and Cherokee. It's an interesting and exciting combination.

Der, the mock ups and the layout look good. I can't cut foam straight either. I'm sure it's possible, but I haven't figured out how to do it. Since I'm somewhat vertically challenged I decided against double decking. One of the railroads a fellow club member is building is double decked and the upper deck is mostly above eye level on me. If I needed to use more of the available vertical space I'd probably go with a mushroom design.

Jim, Fawlty Towers is one of the funniest shows I've ever seen. We used watch it and several other British comedies every Saturday night. Actually anything John Cleese has done is great.

Fergie, Mayo and a little mustard for me on burgers. I hope Teffy tells Anne of GG hello for us. Those are some of Shawna's favorites so we've all watched them many times.

Fergie, we lost Rodney yesterday, though he had been in poor health for the last few months following surgery.

Yes, it's true, only Mookie stands in my way. I'll admit it's a silly goal, but at the current pace I expect to complete the task by the end of January. I'll just continue to be myself, and get involved in the topics that interest me. Under the current rules of engagement, double posting on occasion is fair. I do try to hold my post content to a certain standard. Stars no longer have any meaning to me, I have all I can get.

In the end, Vic is right, it's a measure of how much time we waste here. Just think how much farther along my railroad would be if I spent my time working on that instead. On the other hand if we didn't spend our time here we wouldn't meet all of these people, and make all of these friends. Teffy's great adventure is a perfect example.

One of these days I may get a chance to travel again. In the meantime, anyone who happens to be coming to the Twin Cities is always welcome to stop by, like Sask did this past summer.

Jim, I love Fawlty Towers and Monty Python. Did you know that Michael Palin is a big railfan? He has hosted a number of shows that have aired on PBS relating to trains and travel. He did one of the six original episodes of Great Railway Journeys back in the 80's, in which he traveled the length of Britian to claim his prize of the sign from the railway station in the Scotti***own of Kyle of Localsch. That was the first I had heard of the Fourth railway bridge.

Well the rains continue here. Rained most of the day yesterday, and continued through most of the night. It’s overcast right now, but looks like it’s getting ready to open up again anytime. Things get pretty muddy and messy around here when it rains so much.

I pity you. On the other hand, you seem flexible enough to handle it. For me to get down and work under a layout I’d need one of those rolling platforms like auto mechanics use, but with a chair back attached. I like wiring my flip-up layout better!

I was actually amazed, amazed I tell you, at the number of replies that the MTH thread got in just a few days. Even more so when you consider that before that thread started I had never heard of MTH! I actually read a few posts to see what all the fuss was about, but once they started talking about dcc, control, feedback, and all that other electronic stuff I quickly moved on.


Hey John, nice work with the mock-ups!!! And much faster than me too! I don’t remember seeing shots of your layout before, so that was nice too.

No, you’re not going blind. The post and it’s thread are still out there. I think the problem may be that the page indexing seems to be messed up, hopefully just a temporary thing. We’re on page 274 of the General Discussion Forum index, but instead of showing the options of going to pages 273, 272, 271, etc, it’s showing pages 1, 2, 3, 4… I found your post thread by using the advanced search option.

It was a good game, I enjoyed watching the Yankees lose. When I saw that ball in the 7th I thought to myself, “Boy, that was sure close to the foul pole”. Think that’s the first time I’ve seen that happen.

Funny thing, my mother is 85 years old. Not only was she watching Benny Hill she was laughing at the show. Personally I thought he was risque but she like him and the show, go figure.

The Brits did some really great humor (humour?) programs. Fawlty Towers is a classic. Personally, I liked the Black Adder series. How about “To the Manor Born”? The department store series was called “Are You Being Served?”, also excellent. (Okay, maybe the level of humor was a bit obvious, but I liked it.) Benny Hill, now you’re really bringing back memories. He may have been considered risqué in his day, but I suspect his stuff is rather mild as compared to what you see on tv these days. I loved Monty Python movies. I used to laugh so hard at some of the stuff they did that my eyes would tear up. I even remember his tv show, Monty Python’s Flying Circus, or something like that.

The BBC produced excellent dramas and documentaries also. I can’t speak to how the BBC is these days, but they used to be way up there in my estimation.

I just got off the phone with Bob....... I feel bad now as I gave him some erroneous info. He had asked about a certain eating establishment up the road and I told him that I thought it was in a certain place as I had been there several years ago.

He just called enroute to PEI wondering if I could pin point it's location. As even the locals didn't know of it's existance. No go, then I realized after we parted that it has been 18 years since I was there. Ohhh I feel old.

Elliot: Having your better half do your dirty work Ehhhh! I read Ms. Big Girl's post on the Star Wars thread. Better her than my wife's comments. Bob suggested that Lisa join our little group. I think not! After she read the comment (accidently over my shoulder) about someone should chill and take a Midol.....

Let's just say we would all be running for cover with tails between legs.

Forgot all about those programs. Another great BBC production. I still have tapes of some of those shows, not sure if they're still good or not (the tapes, that is, not the shows). Think there was another series called "Great Railway Journeys of the World", and I think I have some of those taped also.
