QUOTE: A man walks into a restaurant with a full-grown ostrich behind him. The waitress asks them for their orders. The man says, "A hamburger, fries & a coke," & turns to the ostrich, "What's yours?" "I'll have the same," says the ostrich. A short time later the waitress returns with the order. "That will be $9.40 please," & the man reaches into his pocket & pulls out the exact change for payment.

The next day, the man & the ostrich come again & the man says, "A hamburger, fries & a coke." The ostrich says, "I'll have the same." Again the man reaches into his pocket & pays with exact change. This becomes routine until the two enter again. "The usual?" asks waitress. "No, this is Friday night, so I will have a steak, baked potato & salad," says the man. "Same," says the ostrich.

Shortly the waitress brings the order & says, "That will be $32.62." Once again the man pulls the exact change out of his pocket & places it on the table. The waitress cannot hold back her curiosity any longer. "Excuse me, sir. How do you manage to always come up with the exact change in your pocket every time?" "Well," says the man, "several years ago I was cleaning the attic & found an old lamp. When I rubbed it, a Genie appeared & offered me two wishes. My first wish was that if I ever had to pay for anything, I would just put my hand in my pocket & the right amount of money would always be there." That's brilliant!" says the waitress. "Most people would ask for a million dollars or something, but you'll always be as rich as you want for as long as you live!"

"That's right. Whether it's a gallon of milk or a Rolls Royce, the exact money is always there," says the man. The waitress asks, "What's with the ostrich?" The man sighs, pauses & answers, "My second wish was for a tall chick with a big butt & long legs who agrees with everything I say!"
That's funny right there I don't care who you are thats funny[:D].

QUOTE: So, how's it run? Does it run good? I sure hope it's a good runner. You like good runners, don't you? Is this one a good runner? I'll bet it is a good runner. So, does it run good?
[(-D][(-D][(-D]

TRENT: That's an interesting scheme on that SD40. I would say SD40-2 but it doesn't look long enough to be a -2.

Well, I just ordered some stuff from hobbylinc-
- rail joiners
- 3 cans of Floquil Caboose Red spray paint
- 5 pieces of Model Power flextrack
- box of Midwest cork roadbed

I'm heading out.

Almost afternoon all, just some Coffee Zoe,
Cloudy, cool n damp N. wind here, PC , glad to hear you missed the worst of it this time.
No kids to day and to wet to work outside, so I've been doing some inside chores that's been put off awhile. Plan on quiting those for some time in the train room later.

Fergie , good luck with the new engine and I wouldn't say anything either to the wife. Learned that lesson a long time ago

RT , I've heard of that hold charge before. One person on the news had that happen and it cost them bout $400 in over draft charges before it was over for $5 gas

Ryan , I've seemed to be on a roll for the top the last week or so some reason. But at least RT's staying on his diet, and BILL's bringing donnuts, the bill hasn't been to bad

Here's a pic I think there might be one or two would know a littlte bout it. This was over at the Sullivan,Ind. VFW

Didn't think to get the tail numbers before we left there

Well Mother just called and the plans I had for the night got changed. Found out one of our best freinds, Sue , had a Massive heart attack and is not expected to make back home. Her sister called and said she was asking bout us, so a trip back over to the Hospital is on for tonight as soon as Mother gets off work. Saddest part is, She's just 2 months younger than me [ Sue always called me Old Man] and we didn't know she was having any problems

Good afternoon everyone, I trust everyone had a beautiful Easter Sunday, and may Jesus bring healing to all our friends who are in ill health, and strength to the rest of us to carry our crosses through life.

Today it is a cool 53F with mostly cloudy skies and a chilly North wind. It could be a lot worse, Salt Lake area is getting 4" of snow !! The runners at the Boston Marathon all love this weather though, it is ideal for them.

INCH53 I am so sorry to hear about your friend. At our age, you really have to listen to your body and not say, " ohh, I am just tired, I worked too hard today, etc. ". There are telltale clues like chest pains, weakness in arms, especially left arm, clammy skin, dizziness, etc. When I went for my annual physical a few months ago, I asked my doctor to schedule me for a CRP blood test along with all the usual blood work. CRP is called C-Reactive Protein and is another good indicator of arterial damage. The reading should be less than 3.0. Mine was OK thankfully. Any of you guys who are over 50 should ask for this test as a good baseline. If you have a history of heart trouble in your family, then ask for this test at age 40, and have it checked each year.

RYAN That is great news on the Solar panel. The rechargeable batteries should last a long time, I would not be surprised to see them last 5 years.

CAPE JIM Yes, son #3 is new to MRR'g but learned a valuable lesson. I think I will get him a copy of John Armstrong's book on track planning and layouts.
As for what we call mealtime, it seems to vary between the country folk and the city people. The country folk call it Breakfast, Dinner and Supper, while the City folk like to call it Breakfast Lunch and Dinner. I'm a country boy, never liked the cities to live in, just to shop and visit or dine.

FERGIE I noticed that your frig was well stocked with Ed's OJ....now I know where that tanker is that was "shall we say....confiscated" from the CSX terminal in Spencer, MA, a week ago to the MESS RR!!!
As for shipping damage to loco, if your postal handling is anything like ours, boxes arrive here looking look they were used as a soccer ball!! That is why I am so wary about ordering big ticket items online. The packing inside does seem to be sufficient, but who knows! Rough handling, dropping boxes from 10 feet, what does this do to locomotive inerds?

ED & JP Trot needs to get back to Right Field real fast......that replacement guy is so bad in Right Field, even my 67 year old legs can out-do him. He BAD !!! The fans were booing him after last fiasco. On the positive side though, the pitching has been outstandinfg and the closer , Mr P. is just great!!!. And Manny....you should have seen the two catches he made yesterday....awesome catches.

Coffee break is ready, talk later guys,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! Good afternoon people: Happy to report the errant turnout was easily fixable. I used a file, but it was a matter of pushing the point rail out of the plastic holding it into the throw bar a short distance (OK,OK, it’s N, so it’s going to be short.[:o)]) towards the stock rail. The problem was solved instantly. I also filed off the bits of solder, but they hadn’t caused the derail, bad gauging of the points did that. Strange how a thing like that will effect just a car or two, not the whole fleet.[alien]

OZJim:

That’s great, hope you enjoyed them. When I was redirected back to the CS having posted my thing, you had left! The service in here has really speeded up.[8D]
Interesting that just a few inches more can double the capacity of a siding. I’d like to look at that track plan again, can you do an update?

CapeJim:

QUOTE: I missed your question about the dinner meal. I was raised in St. Louis County (more or less city area), and for us the meal in the middle of the day was lunch, the evening meal was dinner - except that on Sunday, the middle meal was dinner. Got that straight? I guess Sunday evening was (maybe) supper. But if you lived out more in the country (like my ex-wife did), supper was the evening meal and the middle meal was dinner (unless you were eating light, I guess, which could then be lunch... )

Kris, who reads a lot, says that the dinner/supper thing is a result of the differences in the 18th Century English gentry’s life styles. The gentry would get up about 10:00 a.m. They would have a cup of chocolate, or perhaps coffee, and probably no other breakfast. (unless they were busy with something, and had to be up earlier, in which case they would have breakfast, even of Texan proportions[:D].) The late rising chocaholics might go to a breakfast, which could be at any time up to 4:00 p.m. They usually didn’t eat any meal mid day. Any snack they might have would be called a nuncheon. Those in the country would keep “Country Hours” and eat a meal at about 2 -3:00 p.m. this was Dinner. In Town (aka London) they kept “Town Hours” and ate dinner later, at 7 -8:00 p.m. You can see that they would likely need a smackeral of something in between that choccy and dinner. So they had a nuncheon, which morphed into “luncheon”, which has become our “lunch”, generally around mid day. In Town, they would do things after dinner, and so would need something else to eat later, and that would be “supper” about midnight or so. The “High Tea” or just “Tea” came about in the Industrial Revolution among the factory worker’s families, as a meal about 5:00 p.m. after one got home from work. The Oracle of Sober Island has spoken. I guess we can trace our country or town roots by the usage![8D]

Mitchell: Long time no see. That’s quite a brute in your new sig.[tup]

Mike: We’ll be praying for Sue. That’s a shock, especially coming after your scare!

Where did the time go?[:O] It’s almost time to feed Rosie-the-dog again.
Oil was above $70 a barrel earlier today, and looks to close there.[V]

Any way all solved now. Now if I just get my doc to tell me when I can go back to work I haven't seen or talked to him scince I was discharged I always end up talking to someone else and they always say I will find out but can't get a answer. Getting very upset here as he told me that I should be able to go back thursday (last thursday )

Good Mornin' Everyone,
I'd like a cup of coffe and a danish please. It's about 8:00 AM east coast time, and it's about 40 degrees on the front porch here in the north Georgia mountains. So I'm waiting a little while before I go out to start the day's project. I've got a small tree about 40' tall to take down. That will open up our view of the mountains considerably. It's not a bad tree, it's just in the wrong place so it will get converted into firewood.

After that's done it's down to the railroad room. I'll get the revised roadbed fastened to the risers today on the section that runs from Andrews NC up to Topton, on the summit of Red Marble mountain and down the other side to Nantahala. That's going to be fun.
Hope everybody has a great day today,

...I used a 1-inch diameter, round, soft-bristle paintbrush. Firm enough to nudge the stray 'stones' off the tops of the ties, yet gentle enough to not disturb the ballast that's supposed to be there! Since you do iNvisible scale, I would recommend a half-inch diameter brush - one that is just barely wide enough to span between the rails.

I'll see if I can find time to snap and post a few pix later tonite...

Good avening everyone, and a big welcome to Jessie to the CS [#welcome]. We have another member of the CS from the North Georgia mountains, Tom ( Mountain Tom as we call him ), but have not heard from him in a while.

Tonight is the last night of Men's Monday night candlepin bowling league, it is also the fun night, as we finished up last week, and took 1st place...so we have some $$$ to spend on the hobby...YES !!!!! So tonight bowling is free, and we have Pizzas, Grinders ( Subs in some circles ) . No beer this year because the kids have Spring break this week, and many families will be here bowling with younguns.

DER JOHN Nice job repairing the turnout!!!!! Are you going to write a "White Paper" on the fix and send it to MRR Mag? LOL BTW, the LOW pressure up over you guys is not going to move out until Thursday, so what you see for weather now is what you git tomorrow, and Wednesday too, and maybe Thursday also. Good weather to stay in and work on the layout !!

ED , JP The sox found the long ball today, and even won the game in 9th via a walk off HR over the

Green Monster

. The Kenyans won the Marathon again this year, new record for the men, and the Lady Kenyan won with a time of 2 hr, 22min.. x sec. That is really moving for 26+ miles and then up heartbreak hill near the end.

Well I got caught[V] Big grin on face, soldering iron in hand, probably the smoke from the solder setting off the smoke detector that gave it away,

Darn, Darn Darn!

Chocolates are out of the question as she's stock piled for a good month or more

Anyway she's upset , won't talk to me and the thing just want's to hop down the rails[:(!]

Gotta admit it is kinda
CUTE!

Happy Easter Guys

Inch: Sorry to here about Sue as I'm sure it has been a shock and hopefully she can pull through. Thoughts and prayers be with her.

Well I guess I can't sign off with "Later Gents" As we now how a new member[:0]

RT: Good that the bank card thing is sorted out, and not at a loss to you.[tup]

Jessica:[#welcome] Good to have you drop by. Our staff here (Chloë’s on the night shift) will bring you anything you want, and you only pay when you are the first on a page, then you stand up for everyone. However, that’s waived for newbies, so enjoy!
Your bio is not totally crammed with information.[swg] Inquiring minds (as Fergie has said) may like to know more about your layout. Road?( Not everyone would know who runs through Topton, for instance) Scale, Era? [:D]

Ken L:
QUOTE: I would recommend a half-inch diameter brush - one that is just barely wide enough to span between the rails.
…I’ve been looking for mine for some time now. I know I had one before a major clean…I couldn’t have thrown it out, could I?[B)] Looking forward to your pics.

***:
QUOTE: We have another member of the CS from the North Georgia mountains, Tom ( Mountain Tom as we call him ), but have not heard from him in a while.

Maybe Jessica could give us the weather reports from the mountains that we enjoyed so much from MountainTom. I wonder where he got to.
QUOTE: BTW, the LOW pressure up over you guys is not going to move out until Thursday, so what you see for weather now is what you git tomorrow, and Wednesday too, and maybe Thursday also.
…our weatherguessers are saying through Friday, and maybe the weekend. The centre is sitting over Sable Island, and is trapped by the jet stream. Nothing in the near future that is going to bump it along, so we are stuck in what is being called “normal Springtime weather”. As you say, the layout may benefit, but it’s boring to contemplate the days of rain and drizzle. We are due for winds too, with fog, which always surprises me.

Fergie: We walked into that one! LOL. I was given one on top of a birthday cake when in Alberta. Great hit with the grandkids.[tup] Yours is WAY more colourful, as mine was classic black, even the track!

RT: I’ve been working on that close up focus thing, and since we (or at any rate I) were talking about couplers, here’s one from my layout.
To put it in context, it’s the closer of these two.

Those two trains were parked last night while the track cleaner did its thing in the tunnel just off to the right.[:D]
Speaking of track cleaning, there’s more to do, so I’ll say goodnight, and God Bless. Prayers for Sue, and all others in need of healing, peace, or comfort.[angel]

Howdy howdy howdy y'all. Look who's back from Ocean City. Guess who managed to escape with only a little PINK coloring, and no red or purple this time? Yep, this time, I didn't get all too burnt. Sorry Fergie, but not much Pink for me.

Happy belated Easter everyone! I was going to post yesterday, but I couldn't get into the Coffee Shop for some reason. An internal error occurred everytime I tried. Did anyone else experience a problem?

Today was a great way to fini***he long weekend. I got to go to Brunswick to do a little railfanning. However, I only did see two trains in two hours; making the average viewing rate one train per hour. It was better than nothing. I also have some video clips I can share.

Good Evening Gang: Here I am at home and not a bit of MRRing done again. Well the pile of trash and junk is getting smaller.

Mike: Nice shots of the Huey. Looking at them made me feel old. That is the aircraft that I flew in Viet Nam and now it’s a monument. I’m sorry to hear about your friend. I’ll keep a thought for her.

PhillC: Landing that on that post is no big deal for an Army Helicopter Pilot. Said in all modesty, of course.

Well I guess I’ll hit the sack. Welcome to Jessica and anyone else new to the Coffee Shop.

Good Evening All,
Just a quick run through again. I will have a root beer please chloe -Hires if you have it.

Inch - Sorry to hear about Sue - she will be in our prayers.

Spent a couple of hours on benchwork for the lower level track. decided to make a lower level yard hidden under the upper one after all. Just working out whether to run it out through the wall as a continuation or not. Work is still nuts though we are starting to catch up. Saw the dermatologist today since the regular doc was concerned about all bumps and moles and such as I spend so much time outside through the year(s). So far no problems which is good. Still have the ultrasound thingy on Weds but things are looking up. The new BP meds dropped the numbers over 20 overnight so that's happy news. Just gotta keep up the diet etc and we'll see how it goes. All for now, I'll stop in tomorrow AM if I get a minute. [:D]CUL, J.R.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Well, had some ISP problems that kept me off line for a couple of days, but that seems to be cleared up now. At least I wound up spending much less time on the computer this weekend and actually ran trains for the first time in months!! Took a lot of elbowgrease and a Brite-Boy, but I got it where I could get an engine around the mainline anyway. One step at a time......

Went out to the orange grove yesterday and would just like to assure you that we still have enough crop remaining for maybe another month+. So feel free to order all the OJ you want here in the shop. And the papayas are doing great, but it's too difficult to ship those.

A week from now we'll be on our way NOB for our annual spring trip. This time we'll be (as previously reported) stopping by to see Paul B, and cutting over to see Teffy. No real railfanning planned, other than what we happen to come upon along the highway.

Afraid I'm a bit too far behind to catch up with all the back posts, so I'm hoping I haven't missed anything too important. Will try to check in tomorrow.

Regards

Ed

Good Morning All,
Coffee and a glazed donut please Zoe. Virtual donuts are about my limit now. Thanks Bill they do look good.
Glad to see the familiar faces back and recovering nicely. It's been a rough few months. Hope now that the emergency deadlines (self created worst of all) are over for now I can go back to working on the layout and 1:1 trains. I haven't even been in the museum yard to touch the RS-11 or the heavyweight coaches in fact I haven't even been to a meeting for three weeks as it's just been nuts.

DerJohn - for leveling ballast and general senic work I use acid brushes - the little 3/8" or 1/2" ones we get in boxes of 12 dozen at work. They don't paint worth a lick, but the bristles are fairly stiff and they are so cheap that using them to plaster or apply glue is feasible. Of course some people are even cheaper and wa***hem for maximum reuse[:)]. Wet down with wet water, they can even be used to adjust glued ballast before the glue fully sets.
That's about all for now. Have a sparkling day y'all. [:D] CUL, J.R.

Paul: come on over I'm buying! Ran the 2-10-2 last night with 40 ore cars in tow and up a 3% grade! Amazing what 2 ozs. of lead will do! Tride a 5% grade but needed pusher service.

Well another miserable day today so off to Radio shack and Canadian Tire I go

Later All

Good Morning!

Very cool again, 39 degrees as I started my drive to work this morning, I had to wear a jacket again.

The pollen is falling like snow around our house, and daily sweeping cannot even keep up with the plethora of nodules dropping from the oak tree in the back yard. The yellow dust is on everything, it doesn’t pay to wash your car, just going to get dusted again.

We had the heaviest rain that I have seen here since the move yesterday afternoon. The downpour lasted about 30 minutes and it soaked the ground, even left puddles here and there. Hopefully the drought conditions will end soon, and my newly planted herbs should be happy too.

Hey Philip Carrell, I’ll bet they are really happy to get you another plastic charge card! Especially with the CS running up your tab too! [:D]

QUOTE: Posted by RT Well guys called my bank about the $50.00 charge on my debit what happened is if you use your debit card as a debit card they charfe what you buy but if you use your debit card as a credit card at the gas pump they put in a hold for $50.00 till they send in the firm amount so my Big $2.81 for gas for my lawn mower put a hold charge on my account for $50.00

RT, I see that all the time with my debit card account online statement, but the gas shows up as a $1.00 pending charge until the actual amount is processed. And this makes it very confusing until the final transaction is processes through the system.

Hey Trent B, Nice photo of that loco! Thanks for sharing![tup]

Inch, Nice chopper photos, that your VFW hall too? Sorry to hear about your friend. Thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Prayers and appeals go out to all who require them at their time of need!

QUOTE: Posted by ***, RYAN That is great news on the Solar panel. The rechargeable batteries should last a long time, I would not be surprised to see them last 5 years.

***, So far it is still working and it has been almost a week now. Seems like the batteries are getting recharged just enough to keep the device operational. The base station battery level indicator shows them at half capacity, but the system still keeps running. Once it goes past 10 days that will beat any other regular AA battery that has been in the system.

John Wood Thanks for the history lesson on meal times, very interesting how all that was derived.

[#welcome] to the CS Jessica! Glad to have you on board. Sounds like you are close to the North Carolina border. We went on a rafting trip on the Nantahala River two years ago, it is a beautiful area. Happy model RR’ing!

Ed, Glad to see you back in the fold, and getting time in on running trains is a great thing too! Fresh OJ for me while the supply lasts, so thanks! A virtual papaya is not too hard to transport!

Cheers,

Ryan
