Hello all,
I would have a cup of coffee but am not feeling up to shape. Though that didn't stop me from having a fun time in Altoona. Saw all the hotspots I could. Got somoe good photos and I'll post them when I can. Highlights included 4 trains in a matter of minutes on the curve, Sd80macs at cresson and the incline plane at night in johnstown. My dad said he has to travel to altoona at the end of august for work and said I could tag along. Then they have a railfest in october so hopefully can make it to that.the only downside was I was sick t he whole time, I lost my voice by the end of the night so I ended up writing everything I needed to say. But no sickness could hamper my goodtime. Glad to be eback though.

Ok, so I'm looking at trainworld's site, they've got some nice stuff, then I noticed something that caught my eye. P2K E6 A&B SETS FOR $60.00!!!!!! This seems to good to be true. Has anyone else bought anything at a "Blow Out Sale Price"? I'm thinking they might be crappy models because they're so cheap, either that or trainworld is VERY generous.[;)]

Yes I've heard about the Genesis steamer problems, I've heard that replacing the pilot wheel's spring with a NWSL spring helps, if I see weight balance problems with it I'll give you an e-mail to see what can be done. I have barely run it, but so far I see no noticable problems with it.

i just bought a building to put on my HO Layout its from Walthers prodect. the number of the building is
933-3048 and if you have the Walthers Reference Book 2004 its on Page 453 on the top . Ok about it i
was wondering what color is the windows do u think it looks like a white or something thanks for the help

Winter is 3.5 months away and not my favourite time of year - we just got rid of it 3.5 months ago, so we're 1/2 way between it . I can't ski (unable), don't like driving in snow, struggle walking in snow, and simply don't like being that cold. The Husky's and dog sled aren't ready yet, the igloo has disappeared and needs a new roof, the skidoo needs a tune-up, and ... I won't be getting a quad for about 2 years.
It's time for an Iced-Mochachino Coffee, and a stroll to the beach with my latest copy of MRR magazine. BBQ's and fun in the sun.

I located this item, complete with colour photo, on page 469 of the Walthers 2003 Catalogue - for those of us with that edition. I was not able to copy it into this reply however(?) -sorry. It's a great building, CORNERSTONE Series, the "Champion Packing Company...[^]
now for the question - to be as close to the photo as possible I would make the windows more of a light industrial flat grey colour ( almost a "concrete" shade). Comparing it to the suggested colour of the roof top boiler (aluminum, tin, or silver colour) this would look great. Of course, to make it truly your own style, other colours for the window frames might also work for you - who says that you can't choose a flat green, blue or ??? colour for this industrial building.
It's your building now - since you bought it - make it suit your needs for your railroad. And, have fun. [:D][:D]

If you don't like snow - come here. No snow in the last 8 to 10 years. I can't even remember the last time it snowed. Of course the down side is summer. Last week it was over 105 every day. Sunday we had a cold front come through and it only got up to 92. Todays high is going to be 93. As fec 153 said "it gets down to 30 maybe 3 times a year". Back when we used to add antifreeze every winter I can remember not havng to buy any for 3 or 4 years because we never saw a temp below 35.

From one of your transmittles you said that you had four blocks. If you decide to convert to DCC, Digitrax make a product called PM4-2 and it will handle four blocks on your layout. If you need more blocks you just add more PM4-2s. I'll bring a set of instructions so you can see what I'm talking about. I have one on my layout and they sure are simple to wire in.

How old are your kids, you were talking about being in scouts with one of them? Do they have any interest in model railroading?

[#welcome] I didn't know what all spotted at a packing house until the receint Lone Star regional convention. Their was a program on slaughter houses. Tank cars haul out blood, 85# per cow. Stock cars of course, meat reefers are the short (36') ones. Produce is hauled it the 40' ones, due to the weight. Since meat is hung, the roofs had to be built up stronger. Box cars and gons haul out firtalizer (dung). Box cars also bring in feed. Hide cars (old box cars) haul out the hides. Flats bring in equipment for the packing house.



I've been trying to get in touch with Leo and Ruth Campbell of Campbell models for the last two months. I finally got to talk to Ruth yesterday and she said that Leo was striken with staff infection and is confined to a wheel chair, but can drive the van. They sold the business to a guy in Oregon, sold the plant and their house and are moving to Grand Junction, Colorado. I've sure enjoyed their kits. I had a chance to meet them went I was in Durango several years ago and they are a nice couple.

Well I've got to get ready and go to work.

Sorry Lupo, Big Girl has a knack for finding funny news stories on the web. There are plenty out there in the world. Being the only Dutchman we know, we thought of you when we read it.

It seems that one of your fellow countrymen has a fetish. The article began by saying that toe sucking was not a crime in the Netherlands, but maybe it should be. This guy is appearantly sneaking up on women on the beaches and doing his thing.[:0][8] We were kind of curious if you had heard that story in the local news. Happy birthday Jim, and don't worry about the draft. I had to do it 25 years ago, and nothing happened. The whole concept is really very outdated. The law should have been repealed a long time ago. With the advances in modern warfare, manpower is no longer the key. This country's military will always have enough volunteers with out having to resort to the draft.

Voting is a different story. I have never missed a major election. Make sure you always vote. This election in November is especially important.[bday][bday]

Hey Elliott,

I think that every male should serve his country for at least two years of military service. I think we would be a far better country if we did. It will make an individual mature and realize just how good we have it here in the US.

I spent four years on active duty in the 80's and did a 9 month tour of Bosnia in '97 thanks to Bill Clinton. I have been an Army reservist the rest of the time. I now have over 21 years in and although there is a possibility of getting called up, I will go if called upon. I believe in our great nation even though it may not be perfect, it's the best one going so far.

As for your comment on relying on volunteers, how long do you recommend keeping a soldier "in the box"? They need to be rotated out to be R&R'd and take care of family matters. Thanks to the downsizing of our military forces, we are running out of Active Duty troops and reservists to handle our current missions. I'm sure the 'D' word will be in the spotlight soon but it will be after the election.

BTW, I never thought I would post on this thread but it was purely by chance I looked at the last entry.

I'm not sure what to say on this one Bill. I have the utmost respect for those who choose to serve, but it would not be my choice of things to do. I would probably have been rejected for a variety of reasons anyway. My father served in Korea, and he actually enjoyed most of the experience, though he was a lawyer and an officer, not a combat foot soldier. There are a lot of people who thrive in the military, have wonderful experiences, and make careers of it.

The elected officials in Washington seem to feel that the military has enough manpower to serve the country's needs, so why keep draft registration in place. If this country is not at war, which it really isn't, then no politician in his right mind would call to actually reinstate the draft.

Instead the various administrations (both parties) have chosen to use our military as the world's police force. Unfortunately, the general public doesn't always agree with the missions on which our military is sent. This is why voting is so important.

I'm not saying that those who choose to serve aren't entitled to a "vacation", but for the regulars, that is the job they chose. Reservists know to expect duty, even though they may not be called. I can imagine that after completing regular service, and settling down to a normal life, it is difficult to have to pack up and ship out.

The real problem is that if we aren't at war, how large of a military can we afford to keep in place. If too many people are in the military, the rest of the country could not afford to feed, clothe, train and arm a force of that size without a mission. Sometimes I wonder if our politicians don't dream up some of these missions just to keep the military from getting bored and rusty.

At nearly 300 million people, we couldn't afford to take everyone eligible for a 2 year stretch.

I was at a major league baseball game the other day, and it surprised me to see that the color guard during the National Anthem was the JROTC from a suburban high school. There is interest out there, and it is good to see. It means that there is hope for the current system, even though it isn't perfect either.

Anyway, I wasn't telling our young friend not to register, just not to worry. Fortunately the politicians may be as afraid of the draft as he is, but for a different reason.[swg]

By the way, Bill welcome to the coffee shop. If you look back about 5 or 6 pages, there was some military related chat. Fergie is in the Canadian Coast Guard, and Dave Vergun (F J & G) is a retired marine. I'm sure that a lot of the members here have some connection to the military.

I agree with big boy that not all human beings are ready for being in the military. Just because of my size I would never make it through basic. Everyone is different and what would be good for one might set back another back a lifetime. I know my degree I will be close to thirty by the time I'm done and have a steady job. I choose this field because I liked it and I know I would last the long haul, but if I was made to serve I proobably would never finish college. The military isn't for everyone as accounting or physics aren't for some. we all have our specail talents and we should use them accordingly.

I love this country but I don't agree with most politicians and I'm saddened by the whole process, heck I almost voted Nader cause I didn't like either candidate last time around. Though I will vote in every election until i am unable to. [soapbox]

Now back to trains. My benchwork is now 100% done. I am starting to lay track for my yard and the mainline and branchline beside it. Hopefully end of the month track work will be 100% done and I can move on to scenery

well i bought a lotto ticket because i can now and i lost. i bought a Ace in the Hole, if you'ev ever heard of it. you have to match the dealers card and you get 4 chances. well the dealer got a 6 and then i scratched off a 8-2-4-K-7. i was so close to. if that 8 would have been a 6 i would have won $250. not a bad birthday then.
