Evening all

It's about 21:20 or so here, watching "A Touch of Frost" (detective series) on TV, well worth watching if you get it over there. Weather's been odd - sunny and raining at the same time. Came home over the mountains today due to the number of roadworks on the main route, takes longer but the scenery is worth it.

Interesting comments about wildlife - we have the odd robin in the garden, a few blackbirds bouncing around, and assorted other feathery things - not sure what half of them are but they're kinda noisy. One in particular that decides to sing outside my window at 1am is both a nuisance and puzzling - it's dark out there, people are trying to sleep, and the dozy thing starts singing! We do have a resident squirrel but I guess it must still be hibernating - not seen it for a few months.

Visited one of the LHS today, came away with a couple of Parkside Dundas 009 (4mm scale on 9mm gauge track) plastic kits - one 4 wheel coach and one 4 wheel guards van, both Vale of Rheidol prototypes (the 2ft gauge tourist line that runs from Aberystwyth out into the hills). Not sure if I'm planning to build anything layout-wise in 009, but I liked the look of the kits and wanted to do some building. Current status is the coach is a roofless shell needing painting and the interior adding, then underframe and roof. The kit is really well designed though the instructions need some careful reading - they suggest you fit the glazing early on (rather than painting it first as I plan to)!

Ed, so that was the tanker that came on last nights train.[;)] I’ll have to go unload it! Really though, I am feeling much better today, I think I be mostly over it tomorrow.

Well, Guys ‘n’ gals as I mentioned I’m getting close to over my cold. I got to see the train again last night, so I’m happy. And of course, to add to all of the above, IT’S FRIDAY!!!! Tomorrows the weekend, I need to model!! I haven’t gotten much done at all this last week, so I need to work today and this weekend on it. I guess I better get going, I’m still busy as ever.....

Jim. I’ll second the suggestion that you check the local paper. If they do there own printing they will have the end remnants of the rolls that you should be able to get cheap. When I was working for a local paper they threw them out. Now I guess that they have become a commodity.

I was TDY at Hunter Army Airfield when I was going through Cobra IP School. I did some sight seeing around Savannah and for the most part enjoyed it. The river front is just reeking with history.

Well how bout that. I just tried writting the replys on word and it worked. Sometimes I suprise myself.

Chris, that's not too surprising - we also will wash off our driveways and then add oil and sand droppings on our engine servicing areas, right?[;)]

Thanks to all for the suggestions on places for the paper. I found out the LHS (and art and crafts supply place) had some, so stopped by there. Got a roll (3'X10') for about $3.50 - a bit higher than probably necessary, but it's nice paper, white and will take pencil pretty well (good 'tooth' to the paper). Got that and the Woodland Scenics (general?) scenery manual. Almost got the Kalmbach Trackwork and Lineside Details book, but I'll wait on that for now. They also had a (new?) Kalmbach layout plans book that appears to have about all of the XYZ Central (project) layouts, up through the Madison Central that they have on the WGH video. I might have a layout plans addiction - I almost bought that one...
(Is there a 12-step plan for layout planaholics?)[:o)][;)]

Time to watch the evening news and weather - let's see what everybody's weather looks like. I find since being around the Shop here, that I am more aware of weather in some parts of the continent (like Calif., Texas, Florida, Georgia, Maine, and Nova Scotia...

Hey looks like I made the top of the page again so today's smoothies are likely on me.John(NS John) have you been to huntsville latley they are runnung a piece of the lake of bay's railway along the muskoka river a little 0-4-0 tank engine. It's a five minute trip but it's fun manual turntable at each end of the run,it's set up as part of a heritage village worth a ride if you get over.Ed thanks for the scenery thought I must say it's the layout building task I most look forward to,I can't stand the wood or electrical work so tend to drag my feet,but give me ground foam and white glue and I'm happy as a clam. Tim, that's an expensive Faller wheel - think when I last checked they were around £150 (about $300 at the moment) over here, though the lighting kit was another £100 so if the price you saw included it that's about what we'd pay. Regarding the kits, I just finished the base coat on the first one, have decided to paint it dark green with yellow lining (freelance scheme but looks believeable). Will try to post some photos when it's done but still need to figure out our ISP's web space - I know we have some free space with our subscription but I'm not sure how to put stuff on it - whether I can just write some basic HTML and upload it with the pictures or if they have some weird own-brand method that you have to use. I'll figure it out eventually!

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's a beautiful morning in the mountains. It'a a bit frosty outside right now, but it's supposed to warm up and be georgeous today. Shawna had an 8:00AM meeting at work this morning and Louise is sleeping in a bit. They've been short handed at her work for the last 2weeks and she's wearied out.

The coffee is outstanding this morning. It being the weekend so we can take the time to enjoy it, it's 60% Jamacian and 40% Folgers. It is truly wonderful stuff. I believe I'll have some more.

I got the chair rail done yesterday. I'm pleased with how it turned out. There are lots of corners, nooks and cranies in the bathroom, so there were lots of mitered corners to be cut. Since I don't have a chop saw, I did it the old fashioned way, with a backsaw and a miter box. I've got a little paint touch up to do this morning, and then it's on to the floor. I can see "The light at the end of the tunnel", and it's not the headlight of a train.

I will get some more foam glued up today, and probably start carving tonight or tomorrow. I probably should empty the shopvac and clean the filter first. Monday the MR club is having a combination workday in the afternoon and meeting in the evening. Bill M. is possibly going to come up for it. Should be a lot of fun.

Big Boy and Big Girl, working together on the portable layout and doing the shows together is truly cool. Makes it a lot more fun. All that good help is well worth a good dinner.

TrolleyRob, the blue foam works great. We don't have the pink stuff around here, at least not that I've seen yet.

Der, that's a fairly wicked sense of humor. Yes, SAC did lose a "can of sunshine(concentrated)" off the Spanish coast. I don't remember the date, but sometime in the 70's sounds about right.

CFournier, that sounds reasonable to me. Clean up the 1:1 stuff, dirty up the small scale stuff. That's kind of like me and weeds. I spend a lot of time weeding the flower beds and weedeating the natural areas on the 1:1 scale landscape, and I spent a lot of time this week planting weeds and tall grass on the RR. Makes perfect sense to me.

Dave9999, those are beautiful pics. That looks a lot like some places around here.

I'd better go for now and get some stuff done.

Maybe it's not a southern or country thing... [C=:-)] When I was little and sometimes went with my Dad to his office (in midtown St.Louis), on one of the streets near his office there was this small brick cafe/restaurant/hole-in-the-wall which had painted (on one of the brick walls you saw from the street) "Brains" and some price - don't recall that price now. I never knew but assumed they meant cow brains or such. That'd be something you could model, since it was a very small, kind of add-on size building. About room enough for one counter and four stools in the front, I'd guess from the outside dimensions, with a kitchen in the back. I could suggest it to Walthers for one of their Cornerstone kits, huh?

Nice cool morning here in Swampeast Missouri, temp's in the 20's, but if I drag my feet before I head for the laundromat, the frost may have melted off the windshield. Supposed to reach the mid-50's today, and sunny.

Have a few errands to run (including weekly laundry), and then time to clear off the dining room table so I can spread out the paper roll and start planning the layout. Teffy, Rex suggested I think in terms of a couple of (joined) 4' modules for ease of moving in/out doorways (and with removable legs). So I'll play some with where I need to place the switches for the module breaks. Then I can start benchwork.[:)] Though I might agree that I'd prefer the scenery and structures stages, at this point I'm getting antsy to get some progress going. Heck, last night I found myself trying to figure how quickly I could get the brass track sold and get enough money for the NS (nickel-silver, not our Northern neighborhood [;)]) track and switches. Patience, Jim, patience...

Well, need to shave, clean up and load up for the laundry (so I can get those other things done and work on layout!). Zoe, I'll have to pass on ordering those eggs for now.

Flip, those couldn't be my tankers. The juice cars are normally silver colored three dome tankers lettered for "Jugosa" my juice company. The crude oil tankers are black and lettered for Pemex. Maybe someone was transferring some of the stuff in preparation for it heading north to our frozen brethren on the other side of the St Lawrence. (Yeah, I know that NS is south of the St Lawrence, but it sounds better this way.)


(CG)Jim, you might consider looking on ebay for some of your track components. I got a bunch of new N scale turnouts there for considerably less than I would have paid at a LHS.

(Which I still have, if anyone out there is in HOn2 1/2 and is interested. That would be 9mm I think Matt [;)])

Good Morning Coffee Clubbers,

Weather continues cool and overcast down here, I actually have a sweater on this morning. [:0] Since the house is solid masonry (including concrete floors with ceramic tile, concrete roof, and solid brick walls covered with stucco) and no heating system, once it cools down it really has a cold feel to it that you don’t find in a wood frame house with insulation in the walls.

I am looking forward to the Super Bowl tomorrow. I really don’t have a dog in the hunt, but I’ll probably root for the Patriots just to make it a Boston year. Btw, the official Boston Red Sox website says we’re only 12 days, 1 hour, and 32 minutes away from the start of spring training. Yes, they do have a countdown clock showing on the homepage. Could it be possible? Would the gods allow it? Tell me I don’t have to wait another 86 years for another World Series win.

How ‘bout them Red Sox!!!!!

One of the problems in watching the Super Bowl down here is that we don’t get the U.S. commercials!! [:(] So the best part of the whole deal is lost! And while I have no problem with hearing the play-by-play in Spanish, the Spanish language commentators aren’t nearly as entertaining as the guys they have doing it in English. [:D] Oh well.


Luc, real sorry to hear that Gloria is having that bad a time of it. I was wondering about you being away from the forum and was hoping it wasn’t due to something like that. Hope the drugs can ease her suffering until they can find something to do for her.

They had a spell of that over on the Trains mag forum. One poster kept getting banned and coming back with new id’s. It’s hard to do but sometimes ignoring it is the best defense. Trolls are looking to annoy you. If you don’t respond it takes all the fun out of their game.

Tell me. Our old homestead in Nfld was burned down by some kids out for a lark. It had sat unoccupied for a number of years after what was left of the family moved into town (it was off by itself a couple of miles out of town, no power, etc). Wasn’t much of a house, but it did have a lot of sentimental value to the family, and dated back to about 1850. [censored] [:(!]

I'll take it !!! Tim sent a whole carload of sunshine in can!!!! Way to go Tim baby !!

Der John & Luc: the northern jet has retreated way up to Hudson Bay, so the door is open from our friends in Fla, Ga, Tx, etc. down south, Tim, across the wide Missouri, even from Ryan, Tim and Ed. How sweet it is!! I have a thermometer in full sun and it is reading 62F. Two feet of snow on the ground, 62 degrees, and I am on my deck in a "T" shirt getting a tan, sipping a fuzzy navel made from Ed's oranges.....does it get any better in Feb in New England??

Tim: two cans did the trick, thank you buddy !!! Your layout is coming along very nicely, just let me know in advance what you would like for your BD and Christmas later on, and I will drop the hint to Mary Ann.

Tammy: Hope your feeling stronger today, that flu is downright nasty, but Ed OJ and Zoe's chicken soup really kicks it in the butt.

Ed: not so sure Global Warming is responsible for so m nay Robins here in Feb. I was told that not all Robins go south for winter. So I told the Audubon people that these must be "Canadian" Robins that "do" go south, but only as far as NE. 12 of them in the yard yesterday eating berries of the Holly bush.

Jim: Yes, these Robins may be a far better indicator than Punksutaney Phil, as least in N.E. And, seeing that I am giving HD so much business, I bought some shares of HD. I figured that I might as well get something back, they do pay dividends.

Ryan: boy did you bring back a long memory. When I was 16, I used to hunt squirrels and give them to a old couple living in a small cabin in the pine woods nearby, they loved squirrel meat....I never did try it, I only provided the meals, they said it tasted like chicken. Did you ever notice that all off things are told to taste like chicken?

Enterprise followers: Bad News guys, do to slower ratings, the last show will be May13th. They did fine for sveral years on Wednesday nights, so they move it to Friday night and have ratings problems...any message here network gurus? Hellllloooo, anybody home between the ears???

Train room: Got the finish coat of plaster all done and sanded. No work will be done today or tomorrow, as we are hosting the SB party at our house for our gang of 6 couples. Spagetti and meat balls, salad, Texas toast, wine, beer, Fuzzy Navels, veggie dips, Swedish Apple Pie, Brownies......ohhh man, what a feast.

not much going on for me this weekend... no parties or anything... maybe I can convince my brother to buy me some track... yeah right... well I'm off to run my train in circles for a while.

I finished my trackplan for the most part:



The light gray parts will be paved and the dark gray ballast and gravel where appropriate. The two tracks of the mainline (at the top) are too close together, but that's nothing I can't fix easily. The track across teh bottom edge (the front) is just there for show and is a non-operating line from another railroad. It makes more sense when, and if, you could see it as part of the overall basement empire that lives only in my head. Plus it has to do with my pseudo-prototype.

There are only two or three scructures, none of which are included in the plan. They are very small even in real life. My estimates for the one is 30' by 15' but like 60' tall. Everything that goes on here will be loading of covered hoppers directly from trucks, which doesn't require much in teh way of buildings, but does require that I scratchbuild quite a few of the little mobile conveyor things they have.

The two removable wings on each side may be increased to a foot in depth and be given some sort of well mounted structure and detail. The left hand one, in the real world, would have an old 40' box car and what looks like a baggage car off their trucks and used as some sort of shed.
