Thank you, Gumby4 and SilverSpike, for the warm welcome.  I might just be checking in periodically, since I'm searching for the motivation to get my model railroad going.  When my youngest son was born in 1983, I vowed he and I would build our own when he got old enough.  Well, he actually (unlike my older son, born in 1982) was fascinated with trains, so I thought for sure it would happen.  Then, as life usually happens, weeks turned to months turned to years, and he is finishing cillege and living on his own...my train buddy moved out!  So now, I'm contemplating at age 49, starting my 2nd layout ever, with a 30 year gap between the 1st and 2nd layouts.  It's difficult to take the first step.

Gumby4, I'd like to hear some of what you heard about the USS Indianapolis investigation.  My father was an 18 yr old radioman on the Indy when she sank in July 1945, and he only started talking about it when he attended his first reunion with the other survivors at Groton, CT, in 1977 or 78.  I attended almost every reunion with him up and until he passed away in May 2001.  Today I still work with the remaining survivors, and they will be meeting in Indianapolis in late August...and I'll be there.  Only about 80 still alive from the original crew of 1196 and 317 original survivors.  Most people only know of their story from Quint's speech in the movie, "Jaws", where he explains why he hated sharks so much (because he says he was on the Indy when it sank and watched the sharks take the survivors as they pleased).  Anything you know about the investigation would be welcomed information to the survivors organization, and I'd be proud to pass it on to them.  You can reach me at jbelcher@cfw.com if you would like.  Thanks!

My father's story is published online at

http://www.augustafreepress.com/stories/storyReader$29381

Take care, all.  And have a wonderful day and weekend.  Life's too short to miss all the roses around us.

Regards, Indyson

Good Morning and Happy Friday! The weekend for me starts this afternoon as soon as the whistle blows and I start walking to the parking lot…..

Since PC has the top again, bring it on Chole! All the home fried hash browns I can eat and topped with two sunny side ups with some hickory smoked bacon too...

What are your plans for this weekend?  Fun, work, business, pleasure….

I am getting together with the next door neighbor tomorrow and we are going to have a “burn”. We both have large piles of natural debris, logs, twigs, branches, grass, etc… that need to go! Other than that the CFO and I need to make a trip to the grocery and to Sam’s to re-supply the pantry.

Not sure how it happened but I am listed as the 4th most active member in the Model Railroader Forum section.

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] IndySon!  Have a cup of virtual coffee or whatever your favorite drink might be… Chloe fill one up for our new buddy Indy over here!

Hey Inch, allergy to grand kids huh! What is the remedy for that one? And happy birthday to Mother! Happy B-Day [bday] Yea, celebrating another 21st BD huh! I know some other people who belong to that club.

PC, nice pics of the plot, and the back yard looks great! Can you swim in the lake?

Der John, thanks for the tent pic, I was hoping for some wilderness pic but those back yard trees look great too!

Mornin' All!

Hi Chloe!  I'll have the dieters special this morning, two eggs, hash browns, two pancakes, biscuits and gravy, and wash it all down with coffee!  Thanks!

Hey, check this out.  My furniture arrives today!  I'm having it delivered to a storage unit located near where my new house is being built.  Two living room sets and a new kitchen set, all real nice stuff.  The builder called last night too.  They're ready to move forward with the next phase of building.  So far this is all it is, http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/Captured2006-6-2900001.jpg , but it does have this in the back yard, http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/OurNewHouse3-18-0600005.jpg (This angle is looking back towards the house.  We will be facing the pond with the trees behind it.).

Anyways, that's pretty cool, huh?

My car broke down yesterday.  It's in the shop 'cause I don't have time to do it myself.  That means I've got to steal the wifes car today.  It's OK for me, she has regular air conditioning and I've only got armstrong air conditioning (the roll down the window kind), but it leaves her without wheels.

Well, I best get ready to go for the day.

Later!

NEAL, sorry to hear bout your FIL, we'll keep ya'll in our thoughts. I've always said thats the way I want  go, just out in the woods someplace. Sounds like your going to be right busy fur a spell with the move n all, that ought to keep ya out of trouble. The area sounds like good rail fanning also, thanks for the photos. No big hurry on the the other, just when you get round to it's fine.

JERRY, the link I posted was off of Dopler Dans tech talk, for a guy up in Paris. I couldn't find just one on him.

RT, luved the marine story, guess you could say the lord moved his heart.

RYAN, the only allery's I do have for sure is poison ivy and maybe be developing one to grandkids. I'll be so glad when school starts again.

DER, that pic looks like what one might call a scenic camping area out back.

Not much going on here today, to wet outside for much.Going to try for some time on the layout after chores. We plan on going over to Altamont, IL. tomorrow, for horse farming days, there's also a train show/swap meet Smile [:)], and free train rides Big Smile [:D], think we're takeing 3 or 4 kids thoughThumbs Down [tdn]. Sunday will be the 21'st anniversy of Mother's 29'th burthday [50, but I didn't say that]. #1 son and MIL are planning surprise doing out on Mill Creek round lunch time, now I just have drag her out of the house without telling her why, tall fur now, time for some chores

Hi to all.  New guy here...long time model railroader without an actual layout (I think I'm in the majority...LOL).  My first and last actual table layout was started in the early 70's and completed in 1975, when I went and joined the USAF.  Since then, well, I have just been accumulating HO scale and dreaming.  The hardest part is actually starting to build.  I have the room now...3000 sq ft home, kids grown and gone, and some time.  What's it take?  Seems like so many choices.  Well, anyways, appreciate the opportunity to check in and say "Hi".  Maybe I'll read something from someone here at the forum that will get me off my duff.  Regards.  IndySon (that's short for "oldest son of a USS Indianapolis survivor").

Good Morning All,

Still hot and humid but at least it's not raining yet. I'll have a nice fresh cup of coffee, cream only please (or regular as we call it out this way).

Getting some progress at work, and actually started putting some roadbed down on my lower level at home. I need to cut the table to make a depression for a river, then some track and wiring. The lower level will be tested and proven before I start to add buildings and scenery since it has all the complicated switching and crossovers. Don't want to have things turn out like last time with derailments and dropouts after the ballasting was in place. With the summer as busy as it is, it just takes forever to get stuff down in the basement, but at least I don't have a deadlineon this prroject.

All for now, I'll try to catch up on the posts this weekend. CUL,Big Smile [:D]J.R.

Evening Gang:

Neal: I'm sorry to hear about your father-in-law. I think that is the way I'd like to go. I have a tree in mind down by the old hay barn. It's a very old live oak. Nice view of the UP main line to. Great pictures. Thanks.

It wa above 100 again to day but there was a good breeze and things are changing. It will be a cooler 94 tomorrow and a good chance of rain Saturday. I hope. Tomorrow we are going to leave early and go get a couple loads of hay. Since the diesel truck doesn't have A/C any more we felt it would be a good idea to postpone the haul one day.

No MRR doings lately. I'm still trying to redesign the layout for easer access. Also my friends layout needs to be reworked to remove a duck under on his layout. He's under going surgery to replace both knees. He definately does not need a duck under.

Well I'm going to head for bed. Have a good night all.Headphones [{(-_-)}]

Good evening all!

Just a cup of joe, please Chloe.  Thanks!

I'm back and healthy, at least thats what the EKG.  Doc was impressed with the results which means if I have runied my heart after the last year in a half or so, I got a good ticker.  Although I'm not planning to live unhealthy.  As a family, we are starting an excercise program.  More for stress relief than health but it won't hurt are health either.

Remember that kit I've been working on?? Well I broke the boom arm so now I need to order another one.  This kit is a killer. Angry [:(!]

Neal:  Sorry to hear about your Father-in-law.  Prayers for you and your family.Sad [:(]

Tomorrow is going to be a very busy day.  I'm off to bed.  Talk to you all tomorrow night.

Good evening gents, the edges of Beryl were over us most of the day through filtered sunlight, but still warm and rather humid. Beryl is starting to do a right turn off Nantucket, and is going to head east of Nova Scotia, but close enough to give Luc, John and Fergie rain and some winds.

NEAL: Sorry to hear about your father-inlaw, but what a peaceful way for him to go, back at the old homestead, sitting under the big oak, which must have had many happy memories for him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family buddy !!!!!
The pics were real nice, very clear and I love the heavy mountain!!

JOHN: yup, Bergie fixed the prblem with my name....I now have Dick instead of *** for my nickname. ( Hey!!!! I heard that Bill North !!! )

Hi all seen this befor but wort being repeated

A United States Marine was attending some college courses between assignments. He had completed missions in Iraq and Afghanistan. One of the courses had a professor who was an avowed atheist and a member of the ACLU.

One day the professor shocked the class when he came in. He looked to the ceiling and flatly stated, "God, if you are real, then I want you to knock me off this platform. I'll give you exactly 15 minutes." The lecture room fell silent. You could hear a pin drop. Ten minutes went by and the professor proclaimed, "Here I am God. I'm still waiting." It got down to the last couple of minutes when the Marine got out of his chair, went up to the professor, and cold-cocked him knocking him off the platform. The professor was out cold. The Marine went back to his seat and sat there, silently. The other students were shocked and stunned and sat there looking on in silence. The professor eventually came to, noticeably shaken, looked at the Marine and asked, "What the Censored [censored] is the matter with you? Why did you do that?"

The Marine calmly replied, "God was too busy today protecting America's soldiers who are protecting your right to say stupid Censored [censored] and act like an Censored [censored]. ................So, He sent me."

Life's hard, even harder if your stupid  John Wayne

I agree with you on the forums loading of web page speed! I was talking about how slow it is in the forum, not as many people posting to topics or creating new topics. Maybe it is just me, or is it that we are still on a learning curve with the new forum, or maybe many people did not re-register, or since MR has put some kind of limited access not as many are posting as before the change? Good sunny morning from Sober Island.  As Fergie indicates, thanks to TS Beryl, it’s not going to last. I doubt we’ve had more than a week of sunshine since May, all told, here on the island.  Can’t really relate to Paul’s 107F, sorry Paul, hope it Cool [8D]s soon.

Neal: That’s a terrific thing you’re doing for those folks.Bow [bow]  Sorry to hear about your father-in-law.  Sounds like he died peacefully though. Please let your family know we are thinking of them.Angel [angel]

We took a back way to our daughter’s place when we went to pick up the family for their visit. Discovered a large plant that looks like it’s a plastics factory, and has rail service. I’ll get some photos, because it seems to me to be exactly the sort of thing I need to model for the industry on my doorway module.  I was thinking of an older style building, but this one is more modern, with metal walls, and not much need for windows. Makes scratch building so much easier.Approve [^]

Ryan: The GKs are all off to the north shore for the day once early lunch is over.  Photos of the camping? Not very exciting…a tent is a tent is a tent, but if you insist…

Better be doing….bills to pay…

Good Morning Coffee Shop!  Tall cup of coffee and some OJ today please!

Not much to report in here this morning. Had a line of showers that came through late yesterday afternoon and once it passed through the temps dropped from the mid 90’s to the mid 70’s. WOW! What a great treat that was and a relief too.

Q: Do you know what most women do over 10 times a day, but most men do less than 10 times a day?  Answer is at the bottom of this post!

Good luck with the check up Gumby!

Neal, sorry to hear about your Mom’s father! Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this time of need and grief. Sounds like he was really at peace with his passing and most likely he did have his outlook and life in order. And thanks for sharing those photos from the museum, is that the Casey Jones railroad park? We used to live in New Orleans and we would make frequent trips there to visit, we also have relatives who live in Picayune, MS. Also, you are to be commended for taking in that couple, volunteering and assisting others who are in need is very rewarding.

Fergie, good luck with Beryl! We were watching her closely in the Carolina’s a few days ago, and hopefully she will just be a nuisance and not a real problem.

Mornin all,Coffee please Zoe

Another hot one here, but the weather guesser says it’s the last one for a few days. Suppose to have a nice weekend, highs in the mid 80’s and low humidity, which is good going to be another busy one.

Ryan, I can eat peanuts, just not boiled ones.

Noah, we’ll most likely get up to the museum, just don’t know when Mother will have a meeting at the main office, that way the company can pay for the gas and most the hotel.

PC, good pics, are those from up there by you.

The local TV had this link on last evening. The feller has some interesting photos in it, including some of an ore ship being loaded by rail.

Good Morning All,

Just running through again as we try to catch up on work. I'll have a regular to go Zoe.

Welcome back Der and Trolley Rob as well. No MRR work the last few days except on the display at the museum where we're busy working on the yard side and terrain. We used homasote rail bed and as it was shaped and slit to bend, we are now filling and shaping to  make a less uniform banking.

Had a slide show by Peter Maclaughlan last night with pics of the New Havens' Berkshire line when he ran the locals out of Danbury to Pittsfield, Ma. Even showed a few of an FL-9 being turned on the armstrong turntable at Pittsfield. The slides covered 56 through PC days including his first day on the job (doing maint work in the electric motors yard - cool stuff the EF-4's and 3's).

All for now ,time to pick up tools.  CULBig Smile [:D], J.R.
