Thank you, Gumby4 and SilverSpike, for the warm welcome. I might just be checking in periodically, since I'm searching for the motivation to get my model railroad going. When my youngest son was born in 1983, I vowed he and I would build our own when he got old enough. Well, he actually (unlike my older son, born in 1982) was fascinated with trains, so I thought for sure it would happen. Then, as life usually happens, weeks turned to months turned to years, and he is finishing cillege and living on his own...my train buddy moved out! So now, I'm contemplating at age 49, starting my 2nd layout ever, with a 30 year gap between the 1st and 2nd layouts. It's difficult to take the first step.

Gumby4, I'd like to hear some of what you heard about the USS Indianapolis investigation. My father was an 18 yr old radioman on the Indy when she sank in July 1945, and he only started talking about it when he attended his first reunion with the other survivors at Groton, CT, in 1977 or 78. I attended almost every reunion with him up and until he passed away in May 2001. Today I still work with the remaining survivors, and they will be meeting in Indianapolis in late August...and I'll be there. Only about 80 still alive from the original crew of 1196 and 317 original survivors. Most people only know of their story from Quint's speech in the movie, "Jaws", where he explains why he hated sharks so much (because he says he was on the Indy when it sank and watched the sharks take the survivors as they pleased). Anything you know about the investigation would be welcomed information to the survivors organization, and I'd be proud to pass it on to them. You can reach me at jbelcher@cfw.com if you would like. Thanks!

My father's story is published online at

http://www.augustafreepress.com/stories/storyReader$29381

Take care, all. And have a wonderful day and weekend. Life's too short to miss all the roses around us.

Regards, Indyson
