Well, today I need to bring in about 5 more cart loads of fire wood, that should complete the Winter's supply of wood for the woodburner on the lower level of the house.

TRAIN STUFF: I am still trying to buy/build an EMD FP9 Diesel that I can number 6516. This diesel was made in Canada for CN, and now is running the daily passenger runs through Crawford Notch , New Hampshire through the White Mountains. For those of you who may not know much about FP9's ,( A units ) they didn't make many, they are used in passenger service, they are 4 feet longer than F9's ( used for Freight service ) to house a steam generator located just aft of the front truck. So 4 feet longer than an F9 would mean that 48"/87 =0.55" would be added to an HO F9 to make it an FP9 to be prototypical. The problem? NO ONE makes an FP9!!! However Kaslo Products of Canada makes an FP9 shell, and Central Hobbies located in Vancouver, BC sells the CN FP9 shell. So, now I am looking at InterMountain power chassis to fit one under this shell.

Good Morning all.....Sunny is out but its windy and colder than the south end of a well digger....Just coffee for me Sallie got up and made biscuits for breakfast so I'm  full... We stayed up last night and watched the Cards whop the Tiggers seems like everbody thought they couldn't do it..Reyes pitch a great game...

Not much traintime in my Brother is coming down this afternoon and I think my son and his wife and kids are coming....I got to get in gear and build some buildings coal mine for sure...

Jeff...How about some more pictures of your layout? You say you built the bench work back in 98 was that you first? How long have you been Model Railroading? You seem to me to get alot enjoyment from your layout and I think thats what we all want to do...

PC...It gets tuff when your health will no longer let you get out for Church but visits from our pastor help...I don't know if you have any folks in the same boat in your congregation but if you do don't forget how much your visits and prayer mean...

Jerry: I've been into model railroading since I recieved a Lionel Double Diesel train set as a christmas gift in 1964. I've built over thirty layouts since then. 2 were O scale, 2 N scale, 2 G scale and the rest were all HO scale with the exception of one that was HO and N scale with HO train running near the front of the layout and an identical N scale train running at the back. The trick there was to make sure that only one was visible at any one time. This made the layout look muck larger than it actually was.

My first HO layout was built by my father in 1966. It had 2 mainlines with an interchange and 1 spur. The trains were a OO Mantua freight set and a HO Bachmann freight set. Can you remember when Bachmann wasn't made in Japan or China? I can. I still have a Bachmann GP40 that was made in Germany almost 30 years ago and it still runs like a top.

KCS is my favorite, yes. It's right here locally so I have no problem getting prototype information. You probably won't believe this, but I made every one of those decals myself. They're printed on onion skin paper and applied with white glue. Some of them are over 6 years old.

I do use my printer, yes. I use a Hewlett Packard Deskjet. The onion skin paper will work for almost any kind of decal/sign/billboard. Even the lettering on my locomotives and rolling stock are printed on it. There's nothing to it. A child could do it, it's that easy. Put it this way. I was a mentally retarded child. If I can do it, anybody can.

Duke, the pics that weren’t showing up were the ones before the last batch (before the ones with Jack’s plaque and all). Rather than re-post, you could give me where they are in your album, I guess, and I'll go look at 'em there.

Jeff, good pics of your layout(s). I’m sure you’ve learned a lot over the course of building them (in the various sizes). I’d read about having an N scale in the background, but you took it one step further by having an identical train back there. Hey, on the onion skin decals, is that just stock from an office supply store? And how do you fasten/attach/glue them to your engines/freight cars? That sounds very interesting - and it’d allow me to make more posters for sides of my buildings, etc.

Mike, on the spelling (or pronunciation (sp?) - I’m with you and the kids. I figure my spelling is off on it for sure, and the pronouncing it I’m probably half (or better) off. Hey, bear in mind that (if I counted correctly) Scott’s still got one job left, so he can still get some MRR’ing money. On your barn jump, I’ll assume you did check the hay pile for hard objects before you went up to jump, right?

RT, I was wondering about MTH when Scott put up that pic, but I don’t recall anyone in here getting very heated about MTH when I’ve been reading through the posts. You’re right - some people like him and others don’t. A little like people liking (or not) a certain big western RR line. I saw one guy whose engines (in that famed yellow and greyish color scheme) were labelled “Non Specific”.

I’ve been working on the railroad... (not singing the song, just what I’ve been up to today)... Got about half the holes drilled underneath for the turnouts’ throw rods, and have been tightening up the spacing of the track to eliminate some smaller gaps. Want to spend the time to (hopefully) only have to do it once - the right way - hate to have to pull up stuff and re-do it.

Don’t have a weather station here, but I believe it’s as cold here as it is in Detroit currently (45 F). ‘cept I’m inside instead of out in the rain. Supposed to drop off below freezing tonight here.

Jim: That's stock onion skin paper from the office supply or Wal-Mart. Icut them out once they're printed and attach them with a VERY THIN coat of white glue.

Mostly cloudy, high in the 40's and a cold west wind in store for today, guess I'll need a couple more logs on the fire.
 Mom is home now, but they not letting her do much yet and she can't drive till she goes back to the docs again.  Said she's glad to be home, but not happy bout just settin round.
 Got a little done on the layout yesterday. worked on getting some ground cover down where the bridges cross the creek and mill pond, now I'm waiting on Bryan to paint the backdrop behind the pond. then some more track can go down. Also worked on a box culvert, but didn't like the way it turned out, so I'll try I'll try another one this week.

Jeff,,,, thanks for the all pics. Nice looking layout you had there and will be again from the looks of it.

TRACK CREW!!!

I shoveld 3 tons of ballast give or take 200 pounds over the course of 5 hours, pushed a 2 ton ballast car, with the help of 3-4 other volinteers at the Maine Narrow Gauge Railroad
 was it hard work? yes
did I feel stiff when I stoped working? yes
did I do it with out complaining and did I love?   HELL YEAH!

TRAIN STUFF: Today I am ordering the F drive unit from Intermountain, and the CN FP9 Shell from Central Hobbies in Vancouver, BC. When parts arrive, I will be assembling to make this an EMD FP9 for my layout.

OTHER ACTIVITIES TODAY: Take in the last two cart loads of firewood to the garage. That will give us about 3 cords, and if I use more than that this Winter, well lets just say that it will be a wild Winter.

JEFF: That is a neat idea to print out your lables on onion skin paper. I imagine you cut out the printed labels and then glue them onto the locos? Do you spray a clearcoat over them too?

INCH: I am sure happy to hear that you at least had some bales of hay at the bottom of the barnyard!!! Good Lord you must have been saying Ohhhhhhhhh sh.............. as the parachute didn't deploy !!!!! You dad was pretty smart too, he knew you had learned a lesson and nothing he could add would teach you more. I take it when you joined the Service you didn't join the Paratroopers? LOL

I haven't done anything model railroad related since mid august... Maybe cause I got that nice Ludwig kit..

 

 

On soccer terms, my team has won all games except one. St. Lukes is going to die in the playoffs.

The little cheaters... I counted how many fouls  they did. I got 37. The ref. didn't notice half of them.

 

I mainly have been doing homework... and drums... ok more drums than homework, but ya know... Drums are lot funner..................

 

I think I'll take next saturday to finish up merchants row 1, then I'll go build glacier gravel, and paint it.

The next weekend will probably be making that frieght depot I got... Then I can build up my hill...

Good morning and a tall cup of coffee for me please!

Well, looks like I got the bill for today's lunch!

Hope everyone had a great weekend; Saturday was a spectacularly beautiful day, clear skies and comfortable temps. Sunday was rain, wet, cold, and cloudy all day, just about a 180 degree turnaround from the day before. So we just sat and watched movies and football all day, fireplace was going too, nice and cozy.

The fall colors are in full swing here in the Piedmont. The daily commute home is a wonderful mix of colors including green, red, orange, yellow, and brown.

Ben finally went back to school today; he was out just about all last week with the strep throat. I am feeling better now too!

Yea, ModelTrainLover, I have a case of that here, and I can’t seem to find the cure either.

Inch, at 32’ up from the barn roof was not enough height, maybe add another 50’ you could get some loft in those sheets! Just kidding! Hope your mother is feeling better soon.

Lisa, our thoughts and prayers for you and your family. Sorry about your loss, we send our sympathies.

RYAN: How is the project going? I did not receive a project progress report by 5pm yesterday, you know, the week ending report?

Dick, I knew I forgot to do something, the antibiotics and Allegra-D was making my head spin a bit the past few days. Thanks for the doughnuts and coffee, I hope I’m not late.

Quiet now, cause the CFO cannot find out that I was actually working on the layout for a few hours on Friday when I was supposed to be resting being sick. Actually, I did get to screw down the plywood sub-roadbed sections for the staging yard and a portion of the sub-roadbed leading into the peninsula area. I also glued down about 18’ of cork roadbed on the interchange yard section leading into the spur and passenger trackage areas. Photos will be forthcoming.

Actually, I spilled the beans Friday night, after the CFO and my assistant ran out to Taco Bell and I snuck up to the train room for about 30 minutes. She had to call me on the cell phone to tell me she was home. I came down and she asked me what I was doing. I said “…drilling holes and screwing down some plywood.” (The saw dust in my hair must have given her a clue)

Duke, thanks for sharing the Apex photos. The plaque they set up for Jack is a fitting memorial.

RT, sorry to have that happen to your friend, and for all in the past few months. Prayers to you my friend!

Flames continue to rise today out of the scene of last night's rail car derailment that triggered explosions, fire and evacuations along the Beaver River in New Brighton.

Officials estimated that as many as eight of the rail tanker cars were engulfed in flames after the wreck
