Yes, definately join the NMRA.

I am not a member BUT am considering it. Plus on some of their trips you can meet other modelers and forum members. Check out Mariopuzo's pics from a trip he took with them. Plus you can insure your layout and "stuff" with them. I think I read where regular homeowners doesn't really cover the layout so check into their insurance.

Here is a small recap of some of the highlights:

Pics 1 - 24 are train sim pics. Some are pretty cool, I like the ones with snow in them.

Pic 29 is a snow shed, I think it is anyway.

Years ago when I was third mate I'd ask the Captain if I should a destination and ETA on the morning message and all I'd get was a snear. I'm now figuring out why! make a plan break a plan. My travel are always "subject to operational requirements" a one liner my wife learned all too well during our courtship. I'm still heading up that way but whether I get in will be another question. If you do see me in just ask for me by name.

Teffy: I'm hoping this rash of Hurricanes are not causing you any grief. As of Wednesday my decks are clear for at least four weeks. So drop me a line and give me an update.

Decals are in their final stage as I'm now working with Paint shop Pro 8 and I'm actually making some headway.

I thought it was "Don McNeill Breakfast Club". Are you trying to see how old we are and how the memory is holding up? I remember "Big John and Sparky"; "The Creaking Door"; "The Phantum" and of course "The Lone Ranger". The LR was brought to you by Marrieta Bread and it developed a fondness for the Overture of 1812 that I still enjoy after all these many years. I built a several of these structures when I couldn't afford to build a layout because the kids were requiring all of the money. (You've been there.)

On the ground throws - don't make the mistake that I made and get the ones without the contacts. The ones with the contacts are the way to go, that give the power two ways to go 1)through the rail points and 2) throught the contacts on the caboose ind. switch. I also like using the "spring" set as I don't have to worry about setting up the throw.

You will still have an advantage over my layout building even with my built up structures because you know that I'm going to lay the track at least three times.

What kind of van do you have, I've got a Dodge Grand Caravan. It's going to be full when we leave Texas, on out trip, as Mrs. "T" already has laid out three seasons of clothes. From the pile, you'd think that we were moving instead of just going on vacation. I've been working on cars since I was in Jr High School. I only do the simple stuff now as I don't like to do the hard stuff. One of the reasons that I got into the bus business was I liked working on the big equipment. Now that the kids are gone "the borrowers" don't take as much. I used to be able to find all of the wrenches that fit a bicycle - just start up the power lawn mower and go across the yard. Wasn't to good on the blade but they didn't care. "What goes around, comes around" now the grandkids do it to them. HA HA HA

NMRA is worth its weight in gold. Look at what they have done for the hobby. When I got into the hobby their were about eight to ten different brands of couplers and most of my rolling stock had one coupler on one end and another brand on the other end. It was the only way we could take cars from one layout to the other. Then it was so expensive that we didn't have enough cars for two trains so not only did you take your loco but also our train to another persons layout. You also get "Scale Rails" which give you another side of the hobby from MR and RMC. You'll meet a lot of nice guys (non gender) to get and give advice. I've been a member off and on for over fifty years.

Great day down here for a change. All the rain over the past few days has knocked the temperature down around 80 this morning. It'll be back up this afternoon, but for now it's really nice out.

Antonio, with the current track on Ivan you certainly have my sympathy. Stay battened down, or high and dry, whatever. I think your points on poll responses were well put.

Chris, if you can find a way to squeeze in enough space, in whatever configuration, then by all means go for it in HO. If I had enough room I would too. There's so much more choice in HO. I'm not trying to convert anyone to N. But I believe if you've got a real space problem then N certainly offers an attractive solution. It's all model railroading, there ain't one 'right' scale. They're all equal...........well, I don't know, maybe N's a little more equal than the others.

You're right Bob, it was "Don McNeill's Breakfast Club". Still have the tune of the opening song/jingle running through (what's left of) my mind. Can't remember enough of the words though. That's one for you. [sigh]

You've got me a bit with some of those radio programs, but I do remember listening to the Lone Ranger on our old upright radio. But let's see, I thought the theme was "The William Tell Overture", not 1812. Are we back to even? [^]

When I make that next trip to my LHS (maybe we'll get to Houston in late October) I'll look at what they have in ground throws. By then I'll have a better idea how my switches are holding up and operating.

With any luck, by the end of next week I ought to have all the track down and the control panel wired. Then I can try some operations and test running, and start to find all the places that don't work as well as they should. [:O] [:I]

I can remember working on some of my first cars. Of course they had relatively simple engines about the size of sewing machines. Once they sprouted more hoses and wires than a Rube Goldberg cartoon I kind of gave up on the idea.

Interesting, because the words bring in 3 of the 4 ancient Elements, Earth, Air, Fire, and Water. I wonder why Earth was excluded? (Or is it included in the 'Way out here" part?) Also note that Mariah is there because of the rhyme with fire.
These cultural ties/roots go way deep.

Glad the snail mail finally got to you . Use them well-ENJOY.
With the pictures of what many of you have posted, I feel a bit ashamed to call myself
a modeler. Bare bones[track,no roadbed] but my trains run,turnouts turn. And I've put
together many MDC and B.B. kits. I have TruScale thats at least 30 years old, brass
and n.s. flex and Atlass n.s. all intermixed. No scenery. The Dismal&Pathetic R.R.
just wends it merry way going up,down and all around.
Can't thank all of you folks enough for all the prayers. Thousands of others need them
more than my wife and I. Greatfully excepted. Our prayers and good wishes are for
them and for all of you. Stay well and keep them doggies rollin'

Ed- I still have that album and 3 others. I managed to save a bunch after Andrew but
had to throw out about 80 because of mold. And yes I have a 3 speed record player
so I can play my 45's as well.

I think I'm going to use a plan designed for me by Ray Breyer-aka Orsonroy. It consists of 4 modules that make a 6x8 layout. I might have to do so trimming of the plan to get it to about 6x7 or 6x6, though.

What are the pros of joining the NMRA, just curious as if maybe it could benefit me by being a member also? Of course, I'd rather joing the BRHS....[:D]

I don't have 20/20 vision to begin with, but I can certainly wait for the day I hope never comes that I'd have to have glasses...[}:)][;)]

Phil/FEC:
It's dark green, the BNSF calls it Brunswick Green, I think. It's the same color of green used on the Executive paint schemes.

Not much going on today, I just came back from church, grain rush season is beginning on the KCS/BNSF, however since the only really good train watching spot that I know of is back in some woods that are a few fields east of my house, I'll have to wait until 1. the fields are combines, 2. I have access to a scanner, no digital camera to post photos on here. Speaking of photos, if this computer would cooperate, I could show you guys my propsed track plan, however no matter what I do I can never seem to successfully upload them onto railimages.com. [B)][:0][}:)]

Jim, you right, I envy her too. I hope to be doing that too someday...............

Chris, well, for me most of the pros probably wouldn't apply to you, but I'll list them anyway, definately not in order of importance.

1. I will get 20% off all merchandice(sp?) at the LHS that's recently opened.
2. I can take part in outings(and there are many), meetings, and such of my local NMRA disvision, the SCWD (South Central Wi, Division)
3. I get another, from what I hear, cool magazine besides MR and trains.
4. I get to visit local NMRA members layouts after the monthly meets.
5. I get to take part in Model contests at the local meets.
and there's a few more I'm not thinking of currently.

And the cons? Well, it's mainly the cost, which is $30.00 plus the local dues, which is I think 6 or so, which is why I'm think of it as a chiristmas gift to see if I like it. I also wonder, as next summer I plan on joining the WSOR fan club, which is $25 a year, and I might want to put the money towards that, I'm not sure.

Teffy, as an NMRA member, don't you get a list of other members in your area, or I'm I imagining, that I head that.

This may be a bit of a long shot, but what type of upload link do you have? I ask because I'm on a DirectPC satelite download, and everything goes out of here by dial-up phone line, which is the connection to my ISP. When I want to send a large file (text or graphic, it doesn't matter) my satelite software throws a fit, even though it's not involved directly in the upload. So, to send photos to railimages, (or any large file anywhere,) I close out of the satelite, come onto my ISP's dial up connection, and wait while it goes out at the amazing speed of 24kbps. The thing is, that it does go out[^]

cjm89- Thanks Chris. I have 4 Bev-Bel 40' ers in jade green&orange and 2 in the same
numerical sequence but with a darker green. Also 6 in the "circus'" paint schemes
with the different printing. I'm not a proto freak just like different numbers on my cars.

There's nothing glorious about it. Arab fanatics took thousands of innocent lives on that day and America should never forget it. For myself, I can't even look at a Mid Easterner today without thinking, why don't you just go back where you came from. I wouldn't trust anyone from the Mideast today, nor would I hire one if I owned a bussiness. I know this sounds real hatefull, and it's not normally in my nature but 9-11 was too much. Those animals have no respect for human life and shouldn't be allowed to roam this Earth freely. [soapbox]

My Walthers/Genesis Super Chief ABBA's came in yesterday and they sure do look and run nice. Now if I can just find the money for the two decoders.
Well it's going to be a very beautiful day and I'm not going to get much done. Yesterday when I was going to build a control panel two things happened 1) I can't find the tops to the mayonnaise jar and the pickle jar; 2) train running got out of control. You ask "what do the two jar tops have to do with a control panel?" They were the right radius for the curves in the yard. Mrs. "T" is ticked because both jars now have saucers on top of them, and my name is MUD. I've looked all over this room and can't find where the borrowers put them. They're probably next to John's pictures.

How OLD are you? The Kingston Trio recorderd live at the Hungry "I" was the first album that I ever bought. I did hear about Maria more from them then the World history teacher. The overture of 1812 is on the reverse side of William Tell on the album recorded by Arthur Feidler and the Boston Pops, right album but wrong side (Lone Ranger theme). After doing some singing around hear yesterday (you and I should start a group) I went and dug up some of the our old r-e-c-o-r-d-s (to young people it's called vynel (SP)). We (read I) had a Kingston Trio day. Mrs "T" was upset about three things - two jar lids and Kingston Trio, but I had a good day. Trains run well to Kingston Trio music but it's hard to hear the locos. K T needs to be played LOUD. I never was interested in dancing utill I heard their music and for years I coud only dance to fast music.
If you get as close to us as Houston you'd BETTER come see my layout. If you fly in and don't have a car I'll come get you. It's only one hundred and eight miles from our driveway to Papa Ben's driveway. I assume that you go to Papa Ben's. It's the old Trainsource staff that was at the corner of S. Main and loop 610.

I've never inquired about a membership list but, I'll call them tomorrow and get back to you. I haven't been able to get it off the web sight.

You must be about my age (64) as you're talking about programs that I used to listen to. I heard all of those that you mentioned except "Fibber Magee and Molly". Mom used to talk alot about them. To this day I still don't care for TV as I have a very good imagination and can do a better job then they can on seeing a scene. As you can guess I like to read.

I haven't heard of anyone haveing a THREE speed record changer in years I thought that I was the only person that still played records. Nothing beats a day of long hair music while piddling around the house. Mrs "T" wants me to get the grand kid to record these albums onto a cd but they're so scratchy it wouldn't be worth it. When we're gone the kids will just probably throw them out.

Lisa is a quick student - maybe I can teach her some TEXAN while we're there, she picked up on the drawl real quick in Howwwwdey. but I must admit it still had a Canadian ring.

Has anyone heard from Big_boy or Big_girl? I haven'r seen them around lately.

As I said, try their support forum. The answer may even be in the FAQs
I find the site rather less than user friendly, but the people are friendly enough [D]
