Afternoon all. Have spent most of today chasing round campus trying to sign up for the assorted seminars I need to be in - university bureaucracy is a real pain as they seem to combine an inflexibility that would not have been out of place in Stalinist Russia with the organisational skills of a small bird... Have managed to get the slots I needed though, so all sorted for another term!

Interesting comments about snow. One thing I've noticed is the "poser" 4x4 owners who really haven't a clue how to handle their shiny new truck. Come the snow, they assume it will cover for them and enable them to drive normally, this usually lasts until they discover that 4wd doesn't help with braking on sheet ice... Those of us who have some off-road experience respond to snow by saying "yay!" and heading out to enjoy some free off-road driving where the main road usually is. Two words for snow that few people over here seem to know: engine braking. Our driving test doesn't cover anything but perfect tarmac though, hence the hordes of clueless individuals needing hauling out of hedges, ditches, etc!

I've been investigating a weird passenger car lighting circuit of late (with a view to fitting it for DCC). It's a Rowa (now Roco, or so I've read) German driving trailer, wired so the headlights come on when pushing the car, and the tail-lights when hauling. It also has interior lighting, so my first thought was "Lenz function-only decoder, set it up so F0 = tail lights, F1 = headlights and F2 = interior lighting". Not that simple though! The car appears to use miniature fluorescent tubes for lighting - they're about the size of a domestic fuse. These are wired to a small red box which seems to be an incapsulated circuit of some type, which presumably controls the directional lighting. What I'm not sure about is if this box is essential to running the tubes or if I can just rewire it when I put the decoder in - anyone have any ideas? Also need to know if I need any resistors to stop the tubes over-heating - they got a bit warm when tested briefly so could probably do with some!

The year I was in grade three [V][B)][}:)]is when we switched officially to metric so I'm proficient in neither[:p][:p] but at least I understand feet and inches almost as much as centimetre's and metres. Bob whats that low droneing sound I hear comming from the north better hit the tornado shelter and raise the barrage ballons cause the Royal Canadian Air farce is on the way. Rob: The "weathering" coffee was good alright....when I came out of the coffee shop, my wife had a fit of laughing, she told me that I looked like the tall guy on Seinfeld that always had his hiar straight up.

Matt: I have a Ford Explorer 4x4, this is our 4th 4x4, the first & second being Ford full size Bronco's, the latter two being Ford Explorer's, the present one being a 2002. For years, I have watched in amasement each winter, as other 4x4 drivers, many of them younger women, drove recklessly in the snow on the interstate highways, only to slide off into the trees, bushes, ditches, or other cars. I have come to the conclusion, that these people never took Physics in school, or if they did, they were "D" students. E=MC(2)!!!!!! They fail to recognize that 4x4 trucks have high centers of gravity, and, a large heavy MASS. They do not like to stop as easily as a car. I would make every owner of a 4x4 take a course on test track in both heavy rain simulation, and ice/snow, and, rapid cornering. If you ever noticed the stats, nearly 80% of the accidents with 4x4's are women. The other 20% are younger men <30 who also flunked Physics. tsk, tsk.

Time to get back to plastering the Train room...what a time consuming job this is!![V][V]

Good afternoon again all[:)]. *** i just missed you to help wlth your plastering Zoe and I are going to whip up my Grama's favourite tapioca pudding you know the real non instant kind with the big round tapioca's in them.Once you've soaked them overnight the pudding is really thick and pastey might work faster than your drywall mud,will smell nicer too.[:p] Gran always called this pudding fish eyes and glue [:0][:0][xx(]awfull sounding but tasted really good when it's warm[dinner][dinner] It's bubbling on the back burner of the stove so help yourself. ***, I agree totally, that's pretty much word for word what I've been seeing every time it snows here! I drive a 1996 Land Rover Discovery and have taken the time to learn how to use it properly (including handling trailers and particularly reversing them into unlikely spaces - a great help when you have to haul scenery around for the local amateur theatre group!). My old Disco is a superb truck, I know some had problems but this looks like a good 'un. Has the 300TDI 2.5L turbo diesel engine and the 5sp manual transmission which is great for pretty much anything. People who buy them and don't bother to learn to drive them properly baffle me too! Luckily we don't get too many of these, as I live in a rural area where pretty much every 4x4 you see is used as intended - mud all over the bodywork and the odd scrape from overhanging branches is normal!

I've just been rebuilding an old laptop PC here to run Redhat Linux - for those who've not encountered it Linux is a free operating system that is more secure than Windows, handles much the same, and doesn't eat all your PC's spare memory. Have been having some minor network card troubles but all seems ok now. It's effectively turned an old PC that was hiding in a cupboard into a usable machine!

Jim, well, the kit comes with this really fakey looking slanted white roof panels. I installed them, but I think they will come out okay if I dullcoat it and then put quite a bit of black and grey chalk weathering on it when I weather the rest of the building.

Ed, Fergie, Der John, did rail images go over there band with again? I ask as everything aside from the pink loco (unfortunately) from railimages is a red x and a box.

Well, I shall be moving along, I’d like to get going, I want to start a website dedicated to the ARK, and I want to make my current website prototype railroad related only. I’ll still be keeping my railimages site, but I do like designing a website too.

Evening guys !!! JI just read online where Lionel has secured $60M in loans to help them while trying to escape bankruptcy. Lionel is also appealing the $41M piracy suit against them.

Matt: Our 4x4 is really needed because I live high on a hill, right at the very top at a dead end. The city of Worcester, Ma. is at 450 feet elevation, and our house is at 1000 feet, so in the space of 2 miles, I need to climb 550 feet, half of which is country roads. And in central Ma., we are in what is called "the snow belt" because coastal Nor'easters push moisture laden clouds inland from Boston, and when they hit 1000 foot hills of central Ma., THEY DUMP like an elephant that has just eaten!![:O]

Well, besides the liver problem, now Deb's neck is giving her fits. Trying to get an early
appoinment with the surgeon that did her back. We know she has spurs in the neck-
arthritis set in many years ago. Deb has 2 artificial hips, one done late71 the other mid72. Doing great-has roller skated,rode horses and motorcycles. Now it is wait for the dr. to call and see what he says. Oh and just did an MRI and he has the pictures.
So guys, add her to the prayer lists please.

I would like to add one thing to this- I have never been with a nicer group of people.
I have laughed at many of the on going comments and been amazed at the help extended to anyone who asks. Thanks for being here.

[#offtopic]Now on the 4x4 subject, we have and use several pickups, I drive a 1/2 ton 2wd, dad drives a 1/2 ton 4wd, and we have a 1 ton 4wd, that I drive when I plan on going off the road, or path through a field. Y'all are right though, most city people have no reason to drive a pickup, or full size SUV, they don't know when to use 4wd, or understand that they can't stop like the BMW they used to drive. I'm kinda lucky to live out here, I grew up driving a 4spd, and pulling trailers around whenever needed, so when I was old enought to get my license and drive legally, I could handle a heavy truck, or pull a 24' gooseneck with the best. A couple of 350's, and a 318 (5.7 and 5.2L) for those metric guys out there.

Now back to mrring, got the mountain built for mom's snow village, just gotta carve some landforms into it, and get some paint on it quick, I wouldn't want it to be PINK!!! No, really the pink is kinda growing on me, I might need one of those PADDED rooms myself before we get done here!!!

my dad and my little bro got the truck running while my mom and I went to the LHS. They didn't have the set I was going to get so we decided on a pieced together set.... atlas code 80 track... mrc 1300 power pack... 2 bachmann plus UP passenger cars... and a Life Like UP F7A loco.

so my b-day has been much better than I could have expected.

What's up everybody? I have been having computer trouble, and have not been able to get through trains.com without have the iMac crash. The poor old thing.

I have a dilema. I have $105 to spend on N scale equipment. I don't know what to buy with it though. I would save it, but the margarity is gift certificates. And soon, I will have about $340 more to spend, since I am going to go shopping with my tax return. First tax return, I am going to celebrate with it! So, I'll have about $445 to spend on trains, but what am I to buy? Any suggestions?

Well congrats. That was an unexpected treat! I think you made out better without the set. The MRC powerpack is superior to anything you would have received as part of a set. And you got to choose a specific engine and cars.

Flip, you got it. we will definitely add Deb to our list. Louise had to have a disc removed from her neck about 2 1/2 years ago, so we really can sympathize with what she, and you, are dealing with.

Silverspike, that is a good reason for expanding or altering the time frame. A family history tie-in adds a lot to the railroad, and the L&N was an excellent RR.

Grayfox, we came through the ice storm fine. We had some, but not as much as some other areas. We also had everything we needed in the house before it hit so we just stayed home and off the roads.

Luc, I think reseving pink for Fergie's exclusive use is probably a good idea. He really seems to partial to it, especially seeing as how he's going to paint Bob's house, land and maybe the whole neighborhood pink, out the goodness of his heart.

Fergie, Nice Hat !! Now that IS pink.

Trolleyboy, please tell Fergie to be careful if he "borrows" the Lancaster. I thought he'd just use a C-130, palletize the load and kick it off the rear ramp. Lancasters are very rare birds these days, and just about national treasures. He could be in real trouble if he bent it.

Teffy, I've got Bill's phone numbers and I'll email them to you off list.

Tomorrow will be a railroading day. I need to run down to my "local" hobby shop in the morning. They ordered one of the Branchline laser cut gas stations for me and I need to pick it up. It's very close to the station that was at Topton, NC. That's the highest point on my railroad, so it will be just about at eye level. It should look pretty good with a jacked up '40 Ford coupe sitting out front. After I get back it will be time to plant some weeds and grass.

Rear back rest came up and the2 bucket seats came down. If I karate chopped the

In my case they are for self protection, as I'm always banging bits and pieces of me into things.[(-D] Worst is hitting my head on sharp projections, or any time I go into the attic which is really just a crawl space in the roof. I should by rights wear a hard hat most of the time! To answer your question, I thought that if you were to do your train room pink you might be bouncing off the walls before long. OTOH, I read some time ago that peachy/ pink-like colours have a calming effect. I actually used that for the general colour of my counselling office at one time. Certainly didn't hurt.[^]

Does your browser have a "History" drop down ? I use Netscape, and I get a history of where I've been. So I just look up the last time I was on. and click on the highest page number for this site, and there I am, in the Coffee Shop, all logged in and everything, and if I'm lucky, not too many pages behind the front runner![(-D]

Evening All; My second car was a '47 Jeep CJ 2. I used to put chains on all fours and could go through anything. That's still one of the best 4x4s ever made.

Bob; After Fergie pays you a visit I can get about 1000 Gals of paint remover in a Huey. Maybe it will take a couple of passes but I used to be good at hoseing targets.
