Jim; I enjoyed the story. Makes you think about things.

Not much happening today. We did the usual chashing and picked pecans for a couple hours. Mary Ann had an appointment with her doctor so we made a trip to Ft Worth. No big deal to it. just a check on her last little operation. ( I'd have used the word surgary ( SP) but my spell check is down. )

I haven't gotten anything done on the model RR scene. Too much time on the forums. I'll try and get to the basement tomorrow morning. It's supposed to be cold in the morning so the basement will be much more comfortable. My live steam bunch is having a run day Saturday. Of course I have to work. Broke an axle on one of my WDLR class E gondolas. I'll have to do some lathe work to get it going again.

Well it's off to bed.
Good Night to one and All.

Jim: That took a while to read, good story though.

Congrats Greg. [:)] Maybe one of these days we can get together and run some double headers of Rock Island and Frisco P2ks. I have 3 E8/9s. They are in the normal Frisco scheme and not the Frisco/Katy Texas Special. However, I wouldn't mind having a nice set of the Texas Special scheme, I do have some Frisco passenger cars for the T S just no T S engines.

I am glad some of you liked the story. I am kinda of picky what I share here in the forums but "had" to share that one. Tonight I received an email of photos from France. There was a car in the water and a tow truck was trying to "fish" the car out. Well the tow truck when swimming too. Then a second tow truck came to fi***hem both out and joined them both in the water also. So if you want a good laught I will email them to you.

The other day I recieved a short video clip of a squirrel and a deer. The deer is eating and the squirrel decides the deer has had enough and jumps onto the deer. The deer takes off running and the squirrel winds up in a tree. It was funny to see nature engaged in the classic "struggle" for food.

Well it is 2 am here and that means it is now FRIDAY. So Happy Friday everyone. [:D]

And that also means it is time to make ################### 2 bed. [;)]

Good nite/morning. [:)]

Good Mornin' Everybody,
It's going to be a great day in the mountains today. The sun is supposed to come out for a while today. That will be nice after pretty much a week of heavy rains. it's about 8AM east coast time, and so far it's looking good. I've got some errands and light chores to get done this morning, and then it will be a railroad day.

Bill Mathewson came up yesterday to run some of his locomotives. We had a good time. The railroad behaved itself, which is always a plus, and so did most of the locos. He brought a good mix of brands and types, so it made for some good comparisons. We had a Spectrum decapod ( very nice) several RDC's, P2k E-units, SD's and GP's, Model Power sharks and others up and running. For smoothness right out of the box the P1K and P2K stuff is hard to beat. I was impressed with the sharks. They were the first ones I'd seen, and they were definitely useable. Not as nice or as smooth as the P2k's, but not bad at all.

JP, the project center using the cut down dresser sounds really good. Finding new uses for stuff is a good way to go, and the drawers will be very useful. You can't have too many drawers and other places to store stuff.

Der, Re critters, Yep, rattlers, mocs and gators. Could very well be South Carolina. It could also be Georgia, Florida, lower Alabama, Mississippi or Louisiana. Pretty much anywhere in the coastal South. A long time ago we spotted a ten foot gator in a drainage canal across the street from my Mom and Dad's house in Jacksonville Beach.
That's the biggest one I ever saw that was just cruising around loose.

Fergie, that is a beautiful Christmas tree. I think the train is just the right size for it. Good going on getting the Digitrax system up and going. You're going to enjoy it. Have fun, and stay safe on the cruise. Do you call them "Cruises", "deployments" or what? I'm just curious. The USN used to refer to them as cruises, but deployment is more often used now.

Luct, I'd like a keyboard that can type. I can still spell fairly well but I can't type worth a darn. If I'd only known what the future would hold, I'd have paid more attention during that one semester back in 1960.

Greg, Happy Belated Birthday! Enjoy the E-6. They are super and I bet the QSI sound in the new ones is incredible.

JimRCGMO, i'm a big fan of Tortoise machines. They're very reliable, easy to install, and pretty well bullet proof. I had a bunch of twin pole machines that I was constantly having to mess with. I spent way too much time dealing with them and not making progress on the RR. I replaced them with a combination of Tortoises and manually operated turnout controls. Problem solved. Tortoises aren't the least expensive way to go, but IMO they are worth the money.

Teffy, you're making good progress on the layout and turntable. What colors are you going to use on the TT? Take care of yourself as far as the blood sugar is concerned.

Jim, Thanks for the story. It's very good, and very thought provoking. I enjoyed it.

I'd better get going and get some of these things accomplished.
Have a great day, everybody,
Tom

I was currious as to why there was no sign of a power out, like clocks wrong or flashing, so I phoned the Customer Service line and waited while they phoned the area super. The # you call for Power Out information was telling us that the power outage we were experiencing was due to previously scheduled maintenance! And all this from a power utility that openly admits it's hopeless at public relations. Customer Service, when they finally got back to me, said that theTuesday attempt would be heralded by a radio announcement, but failed to mention which station to listen to before hanging up too quickly for me toask. Well, at least I wasn't told to have a nice day![banghead]

I forgot to mention the fire ants, does that narrow it down any?[swg] Not that the GWN doesn't have any nasties. There's diamond backs out west in Alberta's badlands, and the little but deadly Missassauga rattler on the Bruce Peninsula in Ontario. I remember hearing of a Natural Resources Officer who headed his boat ashore in a nice little bay on the Lake Huron side of the BP south of Tobermory. Good sunny day, and an ideal spot for lunch. Set on foot on the shore, and there was a semicircle of rattles all around from the rocks!
Just about every year while we were there someone or other would die from one of those things. They are small, but the venom is about x5 a diamondback.
On that happy note, y'all have a great weekend!
BTW, jhhJim thanks for the tow truck pics, there are on their way to far and wide!

Good afternoon, all. Well, the rat attacked my computer, again. Chewed the phone cords and mouse cord into. We put the poison out. Maybe, he'll eat it and die.[xx(] I unplugged my computer, last night. To make sure he didn't chew anything else. I'm going to get that rat, one way, or the other.

[:)]Good news, my dad came home today. He's doing fine. Has to go see the doctor in a week. I just want to think everyone, again, for all your prayers.[tup]

TEFFY: I enjoyed our conversation, last night. Though, you did most of the talking. I didn't mention that I don't talk that much[8)]. I thank you for the invite. I'm gonna come see you, soon. I'll let you know when I do.

Jim: I liked the story. It really touched me.

Guy's, I have the logo for my 'Valley Belt' finished. I would post it on here, and show you. I don't have anyway. Maybe, I can take a digital photo, then, post it. I have to buy another USB cable for my camera, first. Any help would be appreciated.

Greg: Also, a belated[bday] from me.

Robert, do you have a scanner? If not, then a digital photo would be the next best thing. Then you need to have a place to host the photo, and most of up here in the Coffee shop would recomend www.railimages.com They are a fairly good source for uploading and hosting photos. Then you bring the URL of the photo here, and stick it between "img"(without the quotes) in [ ] and "/img" in [ ] on each side of the URL. And then you can put the picture here. Once you get to the uploading part, myself, Ed, John, Fergie, or any of the others would be happy to guide you though it.

Well, I don't have much else, I and I have to get going, as the CP holiday train is comming later tonight to a city a little ways away, and I want to catch it. Problem is sleeting pretty good, I just hope it stops by tonight.

Robert

Did you do the artwork for the logo by hand or did you use a computer program like 'Paint'? If you have a computer file with the logo, that can be used instead of having to scan or photograph the logo.

You still will need a photo hosting website.

Wow, Noah, that's great that the Holiday Train will be passing that close. Can we see a shot?

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,

Another decent day down here in the land of tacos and margaritas. The sky continued overcast, it’s actually making noise like it might rain, and the temp never climbed above the mid-80’s. What an improvement over a month ago.

The last of the Christmas cards got sent out. And we’re down to a couple of last strings of lights to put up. Time to start looking for a present for DW.

QUOTE: Luc: the CFO …. had a root canal done today, Let me tell you she is not a happy camper....

I’ve had a number of them. Normally I haven’t had any trouble with them, I’m sorry to hear that her’s hurt. But in the long term it’s worth it. You get to save the root and get rid of the pain.

QUOTE: Phil: Me and my Dr are still playing with the meds to find the right combo to get mine under 200. Well, ya gotts ta die of sumpin.

The weekend is finally here and the CFO has plans for tomorrow... me thinks I'll be driving her places....

Der and Ed - showed your comments to CFO (Gloria), she said thank you so very much, she had no idea I had mentioned her on here. [:)][:)]

Robert - glad to hear about you dad, I'll bet he's happy to be home.

Tom - dat darn key board grrrrrrrr. [(-D][(-D] strange as it may seem, I have similar keyboarding issues at work. You don't suppose it is not the keayboard after all? I din't think so.

My son Steve is coming in on Sunday afternoon to help setup the train table and put christmas decorations. should be fun. CFO said she was going out with daugther Kathy. [8D][;)][swg]

Nothing going on in rainy central Illinois today, as it has been since the beginning of December. I've been waiting for who knows how long for a replacement running board for an Intermountain covered hopper kit I have that didn't include one, with luck it will come tomorrow. (Emphasize on "with luck")[}:)]

Finally got T nuts for the legs on my module, heck, I didn't even know what T nuts were before I got them. So someday when we can go 24 hours without rain coming down, I'll be able to complete the module, and bring it in the house for foam and trackwork.[:)]

Hi All; Well been picking pecans all day. I did get to the basement around mid night last night and did some work on the plans for the new layout. I won't do that tonight. I have to work tomorrow.

Good evening, all -

Good night for a warm cup of mocha, it's been drizzly and getting cooler today. Tonight we might get some flakes mixed in with the rain stuff (*snow* flakes, not Sugar Frosted)[;)]

Happy (belated) birthday, Greg! Enjoy your birthday present (the one you have, that is).

Jim (other one, not talking to myself....), good piece. I may have seen it before - but still a good one.[^][tup]

Actually, except for the gators (and fire ants), that could be southeast Missouri, too! Remember that the 'bootheel' of Missouri was originally swampland (and when it rains heavy, it tries to revert back).

After doing laundry today (on-call last night, so off today - after a meeting on one client I had to go in for), I went by our local library and checked out one video (Building Your First Model Railroad), 3 MRR books, and about 8 back issues of MRR magazine. And it didn't cost me anything (love the cost!).

RDL, good to hear about your father. Keep us informed on his progress.

(Back to my library run) I'm figuring on looking for any articles or layout plans that I want to copy/scan in (from the magazines and books), and make notes of anything in the video that I need to remind myself about.

So far, I'm leaning toward the Sassi plan (from "A Realistic HO Railroad You Can Build"). In looking again at that layout, I noticed that he's using #6 turnouts (which all of mine are except for a wye switch), so I could build it as a branch line (to connect to an around-the-room layout later, when I get better (nickel silver) track.

The coffee smells good tonight - did you make a fresh batch, Lawrence (Pennsy)?

Will get off for now - need to read some more in those books and get more ideas. What's that saying, "A little knowledge is a dangerous thing"? So the more I read and get, does that make me more dangerous?[;)]

People really are good at heart:

I was at the modules in the mall tonight and a man walks in, nothing out of the ordinary just looking around. We got to talking as i do with most folks and he was saying how he used to do some model trains. we talked about the layout for awhile and i showed him some engines i worked on. Then he says he has some old engines at his house that never see any use and that i should call him and i could come pick them up. Naturally, i said so how much money are we talking about? Now heres the amazing part, he says, how about you just come pick them up. and gave me his phone number.

im going to have to follow up on this, im calling him tommorrow.

moral of the story: people really are good

cjm. so what is a t-nut?

could one of you that had a bombardier double decker commuter car or a large double decker superliner please just measure the height from rail level for me?

i am in the process of casting a brittish rail mk 3 coach in resin. i have poured the second half of the mould. the suspence is killing. it has another 20 hours before the latex sets and then it will take another 6 for the resin to set.
the suspense is killing. lima used to make them (i am using one as a master) but they went bust and they are going for silly prices on ebay and in the shops typically $40 in sterling but thin is a mac keyboard and i cant find the stirling symbol!! i am doing a trailer guard standard to start with then a sleeper and then the first open/standard open. this all sounds very dull but it is actually quite exciting. will the latex finally set-did i put enough catalist in-did i use the correct release agent-will the resin set-did i mix it enough-will there be air bubbles-will i be able to get it out of the mould withought breaking it........ this is the most fun i have had with model railways in years. i just wish it didnt take so long for everything to happen! my blood pressure cant take it!

Robert- It ate your 'puter? Sounds like a rat-fari is in order. Years ago, when I was younger and a bit more prone to extreme solutions, I would make me a comfortable bedroll on my living room floor and wait for 2-3 hours until the little meeces would come out to play and eat my food, and I would drill them with a Crossman M-1 Carbine BB rifle. I often thought about mounting their heads on little plaques and lining the wall with them. Killing vermin is a satisfying venture. Good luck, and lets hope he didn't ingest any internet knowledge and has become like The Brain, intent on taking over the world. Then again, he probably couldn't do any worse than we do.
JimR- I work at a small (think Mayberry ) police dept, and the people we deal with are mostly crimes against nature. Up until a few months ago, the NS switch job would roll thru each night and I could watch her go by, but now they come in from the other end of town and I can only hear that lonesome whistle blow. And that blows. But I do have the internet and time to spend here, so it's not too bad.
Ed- As I listen to the wind blow and the rain turn to snow tonight, I really, no REALLY, have nothing but good thoughts about your 80 degree temps. Really. So is there a Ramada near your town?
Bill- I take your points about the forum, that was one of the reasons I took a break. I told my girl that I was thinking about leaving here for awhile, but for some reason within a few days of saying it, I am back on here with a vengeance. I can only guess it has to do with the season, this is the time I normally do the most work on the trains. Its hard to make sense of this love of trains, sometimes.Glad to have you back.
Paul- Yes, it is needing to be taken seriously, which is something I didn't do until August. We'll see how it goes, and keep a good thought. I'm not sure of Russ' unit, but I will find out and let you know.
Christopher- We need to send this rain somewhere they can use it, you're right, it seems it's been raining for half the year. The midwest turns grey around the first of Nov, and seems to stay that way until about April. But we don't have the problems that other areas do, so I guess it;s not too horrible, just depressing. Hope your running board arrives today.
Peter- I envy you, it sounds like you are really torqued up over this resin project. Hope all turns out ok, I know I would never have the patience to work with resin. I barely can wait long enough with plaster rock molds! Let us know how they turn out.
See ya all again Sun night!

Well we're in for the morning as it's lumpy out there and no sense beating oneself silly. But we're sailing after lunch and proceeding down to the South'rd.

Somone asked about deployments and cruises and what did we call them? Well we do cycles, No not bicycles! Just cycles, which are 28 days in duration, and like the Offshore we work 12 hour days/nights or 8/4 watches. Are deployments are referred to Taskings for specific jobs, Programs are what we call the broad overview of the tasking and cruises are used to describe science programs (did I tell you that I work for the government).

We did boarding training the last day and found out that the powers to be are in the process of developing/procuring Offshore Patrol Vessels for us. Don't know how accurate this is but it sure would be a shot in the arm for us.

As for the MESS, I've started to paint and prep rolling stock for the decals, which will hopefully be arriving soon.

As for Lisa she is still on the mend but is getting better and as always is upset with me!

OK I'll come clean here I did not put the lights up on the tree! Yes is a shameles fact. Lisa despite her back hung the lights but only because she insisted and besides when it comes to trees and lights only she can do it properly! So in my infinite wisdom will clear the track. But I decorated the tree and the rest of the house.

Remember

I'm a Man
I can change
If I have to
I guess

And Bob! I don't know what you and Lisa are hatching but it better be some good or no coal for you this Christmas.

Anyway time to go

Joe - free engines? That's great. Always pays to be nice to people (even if you don't actually get something tangible out of it).

Peter - A "T nut" is used for making adjustable leveling feet on wooden table legs (similar to the leveling feet you find on appliances). It's a piece of hollow metal tubing (diameter varies, but 3/8" would be typical) about 1/2" long which is threaded inside, with a flat flange of top. In profile it would look like a T. You drill a hole in the bottom of the wooden leg maybe 2-3"deep. Then drive the T nut in so that the flange is flush with the bottom of the leg. Then you screw in a hex head bolt (threaded full length, not the ones with a non-threaded shoulder) until it's sticking out maybe 1/2". You do this on all the legs. This allows you to screw the bolt in or out a bit to adjust for any uneveness in the floor. Normally you wouldn't need to do this on a home layout where you're building permanent benchwork, but it's standard practice on portable modules.

Glad you're finding a chance to log in now and then Ferg. I hear you about walking that fine line in Christmas decoration between helping enough yet allowing someone else to direct the artistic work.

Phil, if you're asking about a Ramada Inn, then the answer is no. There are other hotels in town. Today is actually abeautiful morning. Sun shining, not too humid, and teh temperature is forecast to only get up to about 80 (which means it will get into the low 80's).

I'll say you're back with a vengeance. That's more responses than I've ever seen you post at one sitting.

Okay, gotta run and be productive for a while. catch you later.

Good Morning All:

It's a beautiful day outside it's probably 50 degrees and a high of 63 for the day. The heaters are running and I'm trying to warm up the train room so I can work (?) today. Hopefully I can get all of the track rewired so the blocks are set up. I had all of the track on one block with jumper wires and alligator clips. That's the way you are supposed to use the word alligator and not talk about things that crawl around and eat small dogs and cats. While we're talking about them, I've been told that they can out run a horse for a short distance.

Phil:
How often do you check your bood sugar? I do mine every morning when I get out of bed. After that then I get my tea and breakfast and get on the forum. That way the figures are always after the same amount of fasting.

I've found out that the food makes a differance, pizza and lasagna will make it go up, so do hot dogs and sandwiches. I can eat a little spagette and lots of sauce. It took me probably a year to figure out what was making it go up and down. It was very frustrating at first because I wasn't used to keeping up with what I had eaten yesterday, now it's old hat. I can almost tell you what shape I'm in before the finger *** as I've been doing it so long.

I thought that I'd miss sweets because I like pies and cookies, but it's the carbs that I miss like bread and pasta.

Be very careful about your feet as they develop problems first and a foot ampitation is not uncommon.

Your last post was a good epistle, you had to make notes and then post or you've got a good memory (better then mine).

Krump:

Why do you think the "wrecker pictures" are computer enhanced?

Ed;
I've always used a carrage bolt with a "T" nut because it has the square sholder to turn with a wrench and it also has a round head.

I've got to git as I've got three things on the "honeydo" list before I can play, besides that gives the train room time to warm up.

Ya'll have a blessed day and remember SANTA FE ALL THE WAY

Hi gang, Well its sat. and I could sleep late. So I got up at 5:30 instead of 4:45. Felt good to get the extra zzzzzzzzzzz,"s.
Finally brought a tablet to the 'puker so I can reply to everyone.
jhh- Thanks for the story. Puts in prospective what I do for those I transport. Also took your quiz. Not to bad, got 7 right. Would have gotten 8 but didn't think about the fork. It's
like searching for a left-handed monkeywrench.

greg- belated [bday] wishes.

Robert-glad to know dad home and doing better. Prayers do work.

Paul- didn't MRR do a spread on the TRE ? or was it TRAINS ? I remember reading
about it recently.

Bob-{Teffy} - did you get the animated christmas pictures? Also the info about Doyle Davis? Please let me know.

Peter:
Looks like Ed's already answered your question, and probably better than I could.

Indiana Phil:
And the running board did come today,[:p] albeit with one broken off mount.[}:)]
I'll just use some strip brass or styrene to fix that up.

Hey folks -

Just wanted to say hello. Arm-chair modeler here; just coming out of a 15-year break in active modeling. You know, the same old story - girls, working on cars and trucks, college, the military, a career, wife and kid seem to get in the way of actively participating in the hobby. Never let my subscription to MR die out, though, hence my self-proclaimed arm-chair title!

Now we've moved to our permanent residence (at least I THINK it is permanent - we've moved 12 times in the last 10 years!) near Reading, PA, and I have a nice open basement space to build an HO or large N scale layout. Recently visited Ken McCorry's layout that was featured in Dec. '04 MR and the bug has really bit and taken hold!

If there are any other modelers in the Reading area who read this and need another operator on their layout, I volunteer! I am interested in modeling present-day Class 1 railroads, but I enjoy sharing the hobby with anyone no matter what scale, prototype (or freelance!), or type of operation. Meeting new people and sharing the hobby with others is what I miss most doing the strictly armchair-modeling routine.

Happy modeling, and happy holidays!

Warthogdrvr- Sounds like A-10?[#welcome][#welcome].
No ,not near you. When it gets below 65degrees my bones ache. Mid Fla. is north enough for me.
Stick around, plenty of yankees on this site.

Ed, you read my mind, so here you go. I experimented for the first time with Time-exposure Photography, and it came out really, really well. It also helped that: A. the rain quit right as we got there, and, B. That the engine was parked right under a near by yard light. These are the two best out of the ten or twelve I took. I can also show some of the cars, if you would like me too.

Well, I don't have much else to post about, and I've got a lot to do yet before church tonight, so I better get a move on. I hope you like the pictures, and I'll see you all later!

Really nice shots, Noah. Congratulations.

Have you considered submitting them to Bergie as candidates for photo of the day?

Indeed, one of my 'hobbies' is flying the A-10 in the PA Air National Guard. Can't have much more fun on tax payer money or with you clothes on, for that matter!

Thanks for the welcome! I miss Florida - went to Embry-Riddle in Daytona Beach to finish up my bachelor's around '94-'96. Of course, there aren't many basements in Florida - all the more reason to build a separate building for your scale empire I guess! Often times less limitations with a purpose-built space.

Glad to know there aren't any 'hard feelings' against us 'Yankees'. [:D] After all the places I've lived in the states, I think if I had to have a label, it would simply be 'All-American!'

Happy modeling, and again, thanks for the welcome!

Hi all,

Another day of liquid snow!!! [:D]

Fergie, been there a few times, I looked at met charts looks like the gales will diminish with SW 20 to 25 kts veering to W 15. - 20 by Sun PM and possibly mod to strong southerlies on Monday this should shooth out the lumps. [:)]

Teffy - Those carbs will turn into sugar as the body processes them, I'm in the same boat so to speak, My Dr says a good balance meal is better that trying to watch everything tho keep an eye on carb intake. so far so good.

Robert - Those rodents are going to destroy you 'puter soon... An old fashion "possy" could be in order!!!!

Noah - Beautiful pictures, tahnks for sharing some of them. (there goes the spelling keyboard again !!!)

Warthogdrvr - [#welcome][#welcome] sit down and have a coffee.

Time to take the CFO out....
