This week my attention has been on getting my two latest motive power acquisitions ready for service. I picked them up for a fraction of their retail cost. Both units had some light cosmetic damage.
First is an Atlas U30C. The mounting holes for the endrails had to be drilled out so the endrails (the ones supplied are for a U33C) could be added. I couldn't find any visors lying around so I fashioned a pair from card stock. They're likely not to scale but I like them and that's what matters here. I got the unit for about 1/3 it's retail cost.
Second is an Atlas SD24. I didn't have to go scrounging for detail parts for this one. The mounting of the endrails was a bit problematic as they didn't want to stay in place. A little super glue took care of that problem. I drilled a small hole in the top of the cab so I could miunt the horns there. The mounting holes for the ladders had to be drilled out. The ladders were mounted in place with super glue as were the visors. This unit was obtained for about 1/4 of it's retail cost.

For those of you that frequent the coffee shop, I apologize for showing my trestle again. For those that haven't, I've made quite a bit of progress playing God on my river valley. I haven't mounted the trestle or weathered anything yet, but I'm moving along at a fairly good pace. The piers are the only thing secured so far. The river needs a substantial amount of work as well, but at least it's not blue foam! Here are a few progress pictures.

Margaritaman love the trees. Did you build them or did you buy them. If bought who makes them, if made wanna share your secerets?
Here is what I got done this week, not much as we did a fair amout of flying this week. These are my hand built trees. Carved the trunk out of balsa and mixed burt sienna, raw sienna and umber to get the trunk color. The branches are made from some sort of fern material I got at pat catans. I plan on using woodland senics groud cover with pine cones.

The background trees were made using all methods, twisted wire, caspia fern, and cooler pads. From 15 years ago I had over 200 caspia pine trees, unfortunately they didn't make the years of storage in a 130 degree attic. The majority of those wonderful foreground trees are Grand Central Gem items. Whether or not one approves of store bought trees, those things are the best I've ever seen, and fairly indestructible with their plastic molded branches. FWIW, much less expensive in quantity. Sorry, no website. I'll work on that.

The bare rectangles are foundations for structures. I made my own rock molds painting latex onto a hunk of coal. So far I'm pleased. Here's another shot:

Great stuff everyone!! This week I also finished up my last two athearn rotary snow plows for ebay. I glazed all the windows, painted and lettered with mow and road number, added alll metal wheels front and back, added electrical pickups and put a motor in it to power the front blade. It really works well. These are the last two of 6 that I had bought. I kept one and put a light in it and thinking of putting a sound decoder in it with small cat diesel engine( I converted my to diesel power). The other 4 sold like hotcakes.
I also started to paint the roofs and floors of some mdc roundhouse 34' passanger coaches for my senic train that I would like to run. I also bought some sophisticated finishes iron paint and rust activator and painted the inside of one of my gondolas. It came out pretty good. Now I will have to practice with smaller areas to represent scratches and patches of rust. I will try to post pics of it tomorrow.

Hello again. I hope some of you will excuse me for posting here a second time in 24 hours. I wanted to post this picture showing the rsults of some repair work. We were out-of-town for a week and a leaking water heater created enough humidity to mess up all of my 90 feet of paper backdrop. I have been using Faller backdrops because I like the clowds on them.
Here is a picture with some backdrop I repaired in recent days. In this section of the layout, I smoothed the surfaces as well as was feasible. Next, I painted it sky blue and made clowds spraying with white paint. The tops of many of the clowds were painted with simple home made stencils made from torn newspaper. It's not at all perfect, but I'll move on to more layout sections to repair backdrops.

I got the mars light working on my U28B. 5451 in an ex-CB&Q unit, instead of adding a beacon to it, I'm letting keep it's mars light. Just wish that the QSI sound ones allowed this.

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.
