Last week I sprung for my first Intermountain purchase ever.  A wonderful little corn syrup tank car that I'm absolutely terrified of handling.  As great as it is, I can't help but note a few things that bother me about it.

Firstly, on the top, where it was protected by plastic sheets inside its big plastic cradle, theres odd smudges or something.  It looks a lot like if you had a greasy fingerprint.  But its way too small for that and unlike a fingerprint won't wipe off.  Secondly, the one brace and end walkway are not aligned properly.  The brace is rotated a few degress to the left which in turn makes the walkway noticeably lower on one side of the car.  Its the brace on the left

The picture itself isn't level so it might be harder to notice.  But its very easy to pick out in person.  I'd love to try and correct whatever is wrong with it, but this thing is so nice and detailed it looks like something wants to break on its own without my interference.

I got lucky yesterday and was able to catch a Finger Lakes train. I had just stepped out on the deck at the Glenora Inn about 4:45 pm when I spotted them below me headed North out of Watkins Glen. A quick dash to the parking lot and a zip up Route 14 resulted in a couple of photos at the crossing. Four hoppers and a box car pulled by one of the B23-7's running in reverse. The boxcar was a Wellsboro & Corning Railroad. I had never even heard of that line before.

Hi Tom (tcwright)!  Was the loco 1701?  Saw her sitting in the Geneva yard with a few hoppers earlier that day.  Probably changing out full ones for empties at the Salt Mine in Watkins Glen.  Very neat to be enjoying some of that world famous Glenora wine and have the FGLK go by....... The Wellsboro and Corning is a 35 mile short line between Wellsboro, PA and Corning, NY.  Another shortline that has saved some trackage that once was part of the NYC and later Conrail.  The hoppers were undoubtedly carrying salt.  I have no idea what the Wellsboro and Corning car would be doing in Watkins Glen???

I found I was mistaken about the kid from across the street earlier tonight.........  It was his brother who received the MLK Scholarship and was at UB.  His brother did graduate from college and is working to save money for his Masters degree.  The guy who came over to borrow the sander is his younger brother (They look like identical twins...but are 2 years apart in age)  He started college but dropped out.  There are 3 brothers in the family. All of them are great people.  The youngest is still living at home and I see him often.

Still getting some sprinkles here but the steady rain has stopped for the time being.

Hope all of you have a great night!

Evenin, Large Dr Pepper please thanks. (glug, glug, glug) Refill please. Thanks. Panic has struck!!!! The perfect wife is taking the day off work tomorrow to set up for the garage sale. The gig is up! I'll have to actually do something or ....! I've only got a limited amount of time to cover for myself on all the things I haven't done. Oh my, the pressure! Another refill please. Thanks

I didn't go to the FLHS today, not in the end of the month budget. Oh well, I still have scratch building and scenery supplies and a couple of buildings to build and a few box car kits I haven't started so I figure I'm set for a while really. I have decided on a 4-4-0 for my nostalgia excursion train starting from the old western tourist trap town. I think that should have no probs on the couple of tight curves. Only thing is the picture of the loco in the Trainworld add in MR is different than the Bachmann website. Hmm Guess I'll have to do more research on what I'd really get. I want the one pictured in the Trainworld add. It has the spark arrestor (I think that's what it is) stack on it.

Rob- Buddy I would GLADLY send it all to you. Already 2 weeks behind in planting and it doesn't look good until the middle of May. Hopefully they got all the life jackets on the little bitty bit of corn that did get planted.

Mark- Oh our little school (about 300 in the high scool) wasn't all that strict. Just respectful. I also did not know what peer pressure was until my own kids teachers, some were the ones I had also, educated me on it. "Things aren't the same anymore" they said. We had our problems for sure, but if someone chose not to participate, well that was cool and everyone pretty much got along. I miss those days.Sigh

Ole Timer-  Sign - Welcome. Yup train talk. We are like a bunch of MRR friends hanging out in a diner. Lots of train talk and life talk. Just like the real thing. Only difference is....it's free. We laugh at our mistakes, encourage each other and don't really care if our model railroad isn't perfect. ( there is quite a bit of talent that hangs in here ) Enjoying the hobby is ALL that counts here. Hope to get to know you. Steam huh? You'll have plenty of conversation with some here. Jump right in and don't be afraid to wander "off topic" .

Jeff- Yes, glad your problem isn't as bad as it could have been. Angel

Jim- Good luck on the "train time" will keep an eye peeled for the photos. Of course you know your photos are always welcome here anytime.

Barry- have a safe trip. I'll have a pie ready when you get back. Err, I mean, um waiting , uh, for you .Whistling

(yawn) Well best get to bed . Prayers for those in need.

Late night for me... a cup of tea before I turn in please.

As others have said... Welcome Ole Timer, yes we talk about trains.. We share what we have with others....WE DON"T criticize what may seem to be non-prototypical modeling. WE don't nit-pick about brands or what is best.. WE enjoy MRRing on the level we are each able to achieve.  Some of us are beginners, some dreamers..... some very well established professional modelers.. So, welcome.  Stop in when you can, say hello, share your hobby with us and by all means have a piece of pie and a cup of coffee.

We also talk about our personal lives... as has also been said.  We share in each others experiences, sympathize with our friends troubles, and applaud their successes..  We are in short, friends and neighbors who have something in common, model trains..the rest just happens.  Oh, I hope you do like pie... it's popular here!

Ray (Howmus),

I'm glad to hear you folks are getting some rain. We drove up to Seneca Lake yesterday for our Spring wine run, and it was mentioned a couple of times about how dry it was. Driving home today, we hit rain South of Erie and were almost to Pittsburgh when we finally saw some clear weather. So hopefully it will have drifted over your way. Anything to help with the grapes is good...

Evening, Chloe - I'll have a cup of coffee and an oatmeal raisin cookie please. Thank you.

Corey, we'll be thinking of your tomorrow and Saturday. Angel (Is the prom Sat. night, or Friday?)

Not sure if it was you, Lee, who mentioned the BLI 'two-fer' sale on their locos, but boy those are tempting. Now, if I just had the money of those... Even the sale price for one loco is pretty good. Sigh Maybe they'll still have something like that when my economic stimulus check arrives. When IS that thing supposed to be coming?? Dang politicians!

Jeff, those li'l varmits just wanted a ride on the train....OopsSmile,Wink, & Grin Good to hear that your foot problem wasn't as bad as we wondered (and do remember to take those anitbiotics!). Yeah!! And on your 3rd degree - [ouch!]Shock that does NOT sound like a good thing at all.

Inch - another good joke there! Thumbs Up

Robby, I don't know about for you, but if I'd got to $180, I would've quit right then (and picked up one of those BLI Mikados)! Sounds good that you and the wife know how to cut your losses. Yeah!!

Rob, careful what you wish for - our weather guessers are talking about rain for about the next week, and usually a bit south of Cape tends to get more than we do(!). Shock Got a good boat there?...Evil On your lines, it might be a PITA, but some masking or striping tape laid down, and then paint between the tapes, might give you a clean line (though it'd take a bit more time).

Todd, no problem; I think you're preachin' to the choir here - the teen Diners in here have better manners than a lot in school today, and us OF's (retired or not) are "of like mind" with you, I'd guess. Preach on, brother!

Sign - Welcome to the Diner, Ol' Timer (Wes)! Have a cup of coffee on me and tell us some about your RR layout/plans/dreams (modeling a RR prototype/freelancing, time/era you're modeling, etc.). Oh, and you can give your food order to one of our twin (virtual) servers, Zoe or Chloe (or on the weekends, Flo or Janie or the new gal). They can fix most any kind of food you want. Dinner

Sawyer, it sounds like the sports schedulers in your area have more common sense than the ones around here do. I'm just thankful that my daughter is grown and I never had to contend with the crazy scheduling hereabouts. (IMHO) Kids should have some 'down' time without having every single minute of their week filled up...SoapBox

Barry, on that stuff you heard from the union guys - "from your lips to God's ear", as the saying goes. Whistling

Way to go with showing the layout off to your young neighbor, Ray - 'reel another one' into the hobby! Thumbs UpBig Smile

I'll finish my cookie and coffee and get heading back home, want to just do some scratching on paper, and get ready to rest up for

F R I D A Y ! !

(Weekend's coming, and getting some MRR'ing stuff done - I'm shooting for at least having something to post in the Diner - maybe even in WPF).

Prayers for some water for your garden, if you have one (but not so much as to drown it out) for healing and comfort and a good night's rest. Take care of yourselves, Diners!

Blessings and prayers,

Well its almost that time.......Zzz

I did some switching on my layout.  Kinda get the engine running again.  I tried to make some "tree logs" today.  I guess I will see how they turned out tomorrow (after drying).  I'm trying some new for my "steel load".  Its a lighter styrene sheet.  I hope it works.

Well I will try to get some shots up tomorrow of those things.  Well if they look have decent.

I guess its time for bed, and Sign - Welcome to the new people.

My friend who was burned is still having a tough time of it. Skin still sloughing off and lots of blistering. At least he is at home where he can listen to music and surfing the Internet, which he enjoys.

I know what those burns are like. Yikes! The worst I've had is a 3rd degree on the front of my left ankle. Took about seven months for it to heal. Thank God I couldn't feel it. On the other hand that was what got me the burn in the first place. I couldn't feel the fire burning through my fire fighter boot. As a result they don't let me go into fires anymore unless it's a last resort. A very last resort!

I glued down some more foam on the wife's (HO) layout, did some trimming and got all the roads more or less in place. Used a lot of that tile adhesive and still have almost an entire unused bucket of the stuff. Will sure come in handy when I get around to working on my own (N) layout. Pretty productive train room day for what little time I actually spent in there.

Jeff... I'm hoping your appointment went OK.

The appointment was so-so. There's no sign of any infection in my right foot. The swelling (so the doc says) is being caused by the Charco condition acting up. It has my foot swelled from the toes to just above the ankle. That's the good news. Bad news is that the cellulitis infection is back, in a small way, but in my left foot this time. When it rains it pours. He's got me back on antibiotics again.

Evenin' folks!

We are getting a nice steady light rain here right at the moment.  May get around 1/2 inch of the liquid sunshine this evening and overnight.  That is a good thing as I have never seen it this dry in April here before.

I was just about ready to bring this thread up to the top when the doorbells rang.  It was the grown son of one of my neighbors across the street and a couple houses up.  I call them my "next window" neighbors as I don't have a door on that side of my house......  The kid was one of my students a few years ago and was a Martin Luther King Scholarship winner 5 years ago.  He had come over to borrow a sander from me as he is helping his mom and dad with some house remodeling.  I haven't seen him since last fall.  He was a percussionist and ended up being the Drum Major for the marching band at the University of Buffalo for a couple of years.  He never finished his degree as life and new family got in the way (now has a wife and a son.....).  We talked about the difference a college degree can make and he told me that he does plan on finishing school in a few years.  Hope he does!  Very bright, personable, hard working young man that could go far in life!

Anyway in getting him the sander, I showed him the layout.  He was fascinated by it and had wealth of questions on how I made various things and how I knew what to put on it and the history, etc.  I promised him I would have him over for some train running soon.

Zoe how a piece of pecan pie with a scoop of vanilla ice cream on top?

Quick refill, please.

Darn darn darn, the Elmers paint pens don't work on my roads. Can barely see the stuff. (And yes, I shook them well first) Must have to do with the goop I used to create the roads. I dread having to hand paint such lines. At least when I paint fur on canvas or masonite, if a few strokes are slightly off, who is going to know the difference! Back to the drawing "thinking" board. Any new or additional suggestions will be appreciated.

Cowboy Rob

You could try spraying the 'goop' with Matte-Finish. It may not soak up the paint then and the lines will show.

Jeff, good luck with the doctor visit. I really like the engine house and the “junk” lying around, makes it look really good.

Tom, I like those semaphores, and would love to have them on my layout, but those Tortoise switch machines would kill my budget.

Mornin' everyone!

Zoe I'll have the Old Phart Bran Cereal, and lots of dark roast coffee in a R&GV Museum Mug.  The guys at the museum are have a series of riddles for the membership about old railroad crossings and IDing some photos of people most should know taken at the throttle of some Locos years ago......... being one of the somewhat new guys, I haven't a clue on any of them, but am following the emails being sent out with the idea that I might learn something............

Inch, good one! LOL

Have a 1PM meeting at school with the Guidance Dept. to review applicants for the local Martin Luther King Scholarship.  The committee has to decide how many and who we will give the scholarships to next Monday.  Then I have to get my allergy shots and then to Canandaigua to feed my sister's cat.  By the time I get home, it should be raining here so I guess I will just have to work on the layout.........

Hope you all have a great day.

edit - Looks like lunch is on me.  Go ahead and order up!

Ahh, it seems busy today.  I will take a sweet tea for now.

Well I am wondering to go to the LHS or not.  Some storms are coming, and if I am going....I need to go now.

Tried the casino last night and took the brother-in-law.   He was up to $180, and left with nothing.  The wife and I took $30 each.  We came back home with $50.  So we lost $10.   Thats not to bad.  Thanks to the last games we played.  I won $20, and she won $30.

Jeff, nice shot of the engine house.  Ever think of painting the windows?   I don't think I would try it, thou.

Well everybody, I will be back later.

Good morning.

Jeff ... I hope the doctor appointment goes well for you.

Inch ..... That was funny!

Todd.... I don't know if there was a security video, but if so, the guy would have been even more stupid. Cracker Barrel says they hope to re-open this Sunday.

Corey ... Happy Birthday one day early.

Mornin, how bout 4 doughnuts, an irish coffee for me and a chocolate milk for Jbirds ta-go, Zoe

A jock and a geek applying for the same job.

The boss said, "Boys, you need to take a test before you can get this job."

So they took the test and the next day they came back to see who the boss chose.

"Well," he said, "Both of you got the same score except I'm going to choose the geek."

The jock complained, "Don't you think that's prejudice or something?"

"Well," the boss said, "Let me tell you what happened. Both of your papers were right all the way through until the last question came up, and the geek answered 'I don't know,' and then when I looked at your paper, you answered, 'Me either'.
