Mornin' everyone!
Zoe I'll just have some raisin bran cereal and a bottomless mug of dark roast in a FGLK Mug. Gotta get back to watching my diet. It would be nice to shed a few pounds before my doctor's appt. in a couple weeks.
Robby that is sad about the hamster! Meant to say something last night and didn't. Poor little guy. I would be willing to bet the close calls with the cat were a contributing factor.
Nice morning here in the Finger Lakes. Right now it is 54°F outside but not going to get much warmer today. Showers are on the schedule for this afternoon. I just might have to spend the day in the trainroom...........
Got a call yesterday from the lady I did the sound bytes for a TV ad with a couple weekends ago. The company likes one of the 3 jingles she did but wants it done over again. So this Saturday is taken up.... Of course they didn't tell her what they want different. Should be fun! She is going to be in contact with them to find ut what they want done differently and get the specs for the needs of the ads. That should make it a bit easier (I hope!).
Hope you all have a great day! Prayers for all in need!

***Corey, I envy where you are at on your layout, base-coating with paint. Post some pics when you can.
Have a great day all. Rob
Good morning folks.
My wife got up at five thirty today. Therefore, I got up at five thirty. Oh well, I wanted to get a bunch of modeling done today anyway.:)
I just finished putting a coat of base paint on the entire river valley. Holy cow does that take awhile when there's so much texture. Good thing I had an old brush. I had started to finish the last section of trestle before I found a problem. While inspecting it, I found that I had glued the stringer on sideways. Good thing I caught it now before I made it much further! There would have been super elevation on a straight bridge, not good! I can't tell you how nice it is to see tan paint. Almost all of it will be covered, but I wanted to seal the plaster underneath.
I'm planning to go to the store to find a suitable rock and gravel for my river. I was going to use WS talus, but I think it may be too round. We'll see what I find.
I hope you have a great day!
Been kinda busy. Flo, Frenchtoast and a decaf please.
Today is cludy and low 50's. Yeaterday it poured all afternoon. In the morning the construction crew laying new cubing and sidewalks hit a residential natural gas line with a backhoe. Not really their fault, the markout said it was 6 ft from where it actually was. Gas Co. came within 10 min.
Not much done on the MRR scene last few days. Getting to be that time of year to clean the house and get rid of the clutter. I never realized I have so much c**p in my house, time to dispose of it.
Well, back to work. I'll check in later..
Eric
Good morning. It's 56 and sunny. The high is projected to be in the low 80's and it will be partly cloudy. I got some layout work done yesterday. The new town hall is now in it's place at the back of the layout but there's some cockup with the lights in it. Got to correct that when I can. Cahnged out the lights in the Belvedere hotel and in the foundry. Lakeside shipping (there's not a lake in sight!) got a new addition and the north engine house got a nice big machine shop. As to what will get done today, who knows. It's a new day. There was some action on the fire front yesterday. Not a fire but rather a power line incident. A truck snagged some power lines hanging across the Texas Highway (Nolan trace) and pulled them down, pulling down several poles in the process. 911 called our dept to go so I went to help with traffic control. Once the authorities had things in hand I came back home. Other than that it was an uneventful day. Today's Weather for: Sundown, LA 71446-6114 4/21/2009 Wind Chill: 58°F Humidity: 68% Dew Point: 48°F So Far Today High: 59°F Low: 56°F Rain: 0.00" Rain Rate: 0.00"/h Gust: 5mph WSW The area is still under a flood alert! Today High: 82 Mostly sunny. Highs in the lower 80s. West winds 10 to 15 mph. Tonight Low: 55 Clear. Lows in the mid 50s. West winds around 5 mph.
I picked up a few things for the layout, the woodland Scenic’s car wash, which I installed at the gas station and a few figures for around the round house. I installed some bushes and trees in the downtown section. I hope to take some pictures this week and post them on the web. Yesterday I spent all day catching up from the 3 day I took off from work last week. Rob sounds like your making progress on the layouts.

Good Morning---Another rainy day here. High going up to 8C---hey, by Friday it is s'posed to be 25C!!.
Ray--The trip home yesterday was interesting. There was a truck on the 401 that found its way into the ditch near Ingersoll for some reason--probs; hydroplaning. This lead to a backup and me going back onto another concession road home. ---BTW-that plane looked awful dang familiar. There was something that flew out of the Woodstock Flying Club back in the 60's that looked just like that---I'll have to dig through some of my dads photo albums---if'n I can get the scanner going you'll see what I mean
We've a not so busy day--have 2 clients to work with today so I'll be starting a bit later today. Chloe, I'll have 3 eggs over easy with sausages and hash browns and a large IV bagarawcafffeine please. I'm going to sit at what seems to becoming my favorite corner---where I can see flying pies coming at me and duck-----

Good evening,
I've been so busy the past few days, I've only had time to stop in for some quick to-go orders...I think the girls are getting a little tired of bagging up my burgers and tossing them to me.
An interesting afternoon in Clarence, strong wind gusts toppled a brand new vertical grain dryer. It's predecessor burned several months ago, as did the one before THAT. This one dropped over, landing perfectly on the gas line, busting it wide open.
Fortunately, the strong winds were helping to move the natural gas along, and we only had to evacuate one house. As it was directly alongside the UPRR main, we had 'em stop the trains. Gas company finally showed up, dug up the line, did something to cap it or plug it...and we finally went home about 3 hours later. Had two different TV crews show up...pretty late into the incident. I was expecting teaser lines about "tragedy averted," or "tense moments in Clarence," or "an explosive situation..." and phone calls from both sets of parents to see if we got blowed-up or not.
*yawn*
Long day, tomorrow is another weird scheduling day with a fire truck ride home from school for a lucky North Liberty third grader to cover, and a dress rehearsal for a high school musical as well.
Good night all...

TMarshSorry. Showing my age. You don't have to admit you know what I'm talking about!
Todd, probably don't have to, but I do know what you are talking about.........
Barry, glad you got home safely. That was a fun day wasn't it? So you went back and got a couple Brass Mikes, huh? Sounds like you got a good bargain. I wish I had gotten a photo of some of the stuff that some vendors were trying to sell....... I think it is great that you are going to get your family stories and some history down in a book. My son in Chicago is busy doing that for his family (both sides) hence the unearthing of some things like the Pietenpol photo. Speaking of which, tomorrow I need to look for some more material for him.
Flo, I'll just have a decafe before bedtime.
I was just looking at the oldest operational locos on my layout. There are three. Two are Atlas GP40's and the third, are you ready for this, is a Bachmann GP40 that I bought new in 1977. Since then it's been completely rebuilt, has new trucks and wheels, new motor and a more modern shell but it still has the same frame - minus the parts I cut off to mount the new motor. The Atlas mechanisms are pretty much virgin, the new additions are new wires and lights. DCC decoders have been added to each also. The Bachmann serves as a mid-train helper in my heavy freight of 20 some odd cars.
The old Bachmann as it appears today:
Evening all...Just stopped in for a double RBF...please...Thank You....Jerry
Evenin' Dr Pepper please. Decided to do some painting at the church and next thing I new it was supper time. The day went quick
Welcome back Ray and Barry. We tried to keep things to a minimum this weekend for ya's to get caught up. Sounds like you had a good time.
Ray- I know it's not, but that Model A motor sure makes it look like an old Cox gas powered Model Airplane. Oh.... Sorry. Showing my age. You don't have to admit you know what I'm talking about!
Garry- Detroit! You be careful ya hear!
Rob- Have you priced Polyurethane? Painting the floor of the stream bed and maybe a touch of tint for the water if needed and what's left over you can use for other things. Kinda takes the bite out of the cost. Oh and sorry, I used all my post holes or I would gladly have sent you a few.
Jeff and nik- Good looking stuff there! Say nik, did you know your handrail is not complete? Maybe you could make one out of bra...SSHHPPLLAATT!!!! Oh, Chocolate. Now I know why he wanted that spatula.
EDIT: Night time kitchen raids are on me.

***Robby, sorry to hear about your hamster. With all it's stressfull monster (cat) encounters, it's immunity could have become compromised. That's a bummer!
Never made it back in the train room tonight. Maybe tomorrow evening.
Have a good night y'all. Rob
Another ham sandwich, and probably a spatula, Chloe.
I Rembered my photobucket password, and so I can show you my diarama!
My GP-38-2 on it (yes I know half the handrail is missing, I am using it as a pattern for a brass one)
Side View (And no. I cant find a use for spent brass in MRRing, I am still looking!)
Overhead view
See yall later!
Rob, my wife's list wasn't that long this weekend. It certainly didn't involve digging holes for a fence!
I'm thinking of giving my river valley a coat of tan paint tomorrow. Most of it will be covered anyway, but it will feel like there is some sort of scenery done. I need to make a trip to hobby lobby to buy a few scenery items tomorrow. Ah, I love Tuesdays off. A day all to my self without interference! I even get most stores to my self.
Have a good night
Robby P.Jeff, looking very nice. How big is your layout?????????
I better duck coming in here.
Well been busy at work, but I am getting that "weathering" itch again. We got a check from the insurance company saying that it doesn't cover the hospital visit. Its only about $300. The rest was covered. So............the wife will call and see if it is ours or will the hospital send a bill for the $300.
What else. Um......The hamster is on its last leg. It has the "wet tail" sickness. Its pretty sick. We don't know what happened to the poor guy. We kept him clean, and the cage. Kept his water full, and food full. Its real sad, knowing you can't do much. I read to take him to the vet, but later in the paragraph it said they normally die anyway after the visit.
Jeff, looking very nice. How big is your layout?????????
Well I guess I will watch some TV.
Everybody have a good night.
"Rust, whats not to love?"
Hello and a good damp night to all of you!
Two Truck Shay!!
Had a good meeting with Ray on Sunday--and then doth blew close to $100 on a couple of brass engines going for 2/$60 and then got 2 bags of brass frames and etc for the grand total of 2/$20. The brass engines are your basic USRA 2-8-2 type--mind, I suspect some modification--and the things still work--although one sounds like a buzzsaw on helium. And yes, Ray, those cans did look odd---the design on the labels had my sister howling---the design(she took retail design at Sheridan) she told me dated those cans as early 1960's(ca. 1962/3 she figured).
Shortly after Ray left I ran into an old school bud who is now getting back into HO modelling with an idea of doing a freelance version of the Woodstock to Ingersoll Electric Transit System. The original died off about 1916, or thereabouts and his is a kind of 'what if' scenario---as in, what if the funding did come in and it became a going concern? So, of course this guy asks me if I'd be interested in helping him---well I said yes---I've got three buildings to work on. And there is no way he's going to model three limestone kiln plants and those huge quarries around Beachville---I told him of Lance Mindheim's suggestion of one on his 'Monon Route' that was done on the fascia as a mere suggestion of one--
Today, I had a seminar to pull off for the Woodstock guys for work, hence the late time off arrival back home----took all furschlugener day to get through all the material the office had me doing---
PC---bike's coming together quite well
Ray--I'm putting my aunt's stories about our family together hopefully into book form. I think that there seems to be a lot of material in yours as well----It's like ---put everything into one package boy!!
Rob- Layout is getting better looking everytime I see it. As for painting---I got one side of the cut done by Sims Jtn that is getting done with a bit of powder thrown into the paint as well---makes for a gritty start to the cut
Whew--Chloe, after all that can I get a cheeseburger deluxe with a large RBF please---I'm going to the wiiiiiiiKeerrrrrssssppllliiitttzzzzzz!!!---Ok---corner booth----I see the catapault is back in operation-----
BLT & a lemon water, please.
***Galaxy, hope you get to feeling better soon.
***Jeffrey, Nice additions!
Finished digging out about 20 post holes (wife had dug them all about halfway) , them Quikcrete'd them in place. Only a few left to do then it's fence nailing time.
Kinda tuckered out tonight, so might doze off for a bit in a corner booth.
Rob
pcarrellRay, thanks for the extra info on that pic. That all makes sense. The background stuff does look full scale, what little you can see. Cool plane.....vary cool. And the FAA......yeah, our family has some experience with them. My father used to design aircraft for a living (many, many moons ago). They can be a "fun" bunch!

My pleasure! And, it gave me a reason to do more research myself.... According to both Barneys obituary and the eMail my son sent the plane itself is now owned by the Curtis Museum. They did not have it on display the last couple of times I was down there. The exhibit of the converted Model A Ford motor was another one he did for the museum to display.
I also found a site of photos of the Pietenpol Air Camper that say some of the photos are of the original design that Pietenpol did in 1929, however another historical site shows that the Air Camper was never made until the mid 1930's which is what i remember Barney mentioning.... The site with pictures (a very nice one of the radiator is there.....) is found here: http://www.airminded.net/piet/piet.html
Enjoy!
Been busy on the layout today, mostly changing out light bulbs. I also put a few structures in place. One is an engine house I got from another modeler.
It's now a large machine shop for the north engine house.
The new town hall is at the rear of the layout.
I'm trying this new station on for size at the north end of the layout.
And Midtown Shipping has gotten a new addition.
jeffrey-wimberly Here we are almost on page two again! Typical Monday. Everybody's asleep at the switch.

Just my thoughts, ideas, opinions and experiences. Others may vary.
HO and N Scale.
After long and careful thought, they have convinced me. I have come to the conclusion that they are right. The aliens did it.
OK, the wife's river bed slopes down (as do full scale rivers) so I have a question. After creating the actual river bed with stuff (might try using tile adhesive, because I still have some) and painting it (I have lots of acrylics on hand), what can I use that is both "inexpensive" to pour or brush over it that also will create a reasonable look? Thanks for any suggestions.
Got all the wife's track glued down except the section that heads over the trestles. First I'm going to try making some cement supports for the bottom of the trestles to sit on. Might try real cement in cardboard molds when we set some full-scale fence posts in the next day or two around the garden.
Had to cut out on a 911 callout about a couple of hours ago. A truck snagged some low hanging wires across Texas highway just outside Leesviile and pulled them down, pulling several poles down at the same time. I did my bit with traffic control until the authorities got everything under control.Got my May Walther's flyer today. I see a couple of things I wouldn't mind having. Banded lumber stacks #506-130, National Oil Company 433-1331. I figure I can tack them onto an order for a Digitrax DZ125 decoder. That'll take some of the sting out of the shipping cost.
Hello ....
Just checking in. Looks like you diners were busy this weekend.
The drive to MI yesterday was horrible as far as weather goes. It was heavy rain for all 600 miles. We barely avoided one bad accident near Elizbethtown KY as a huge tractor/trailer truck went into to big pool of rain water to the right of the parkway to avoid a car spinning out. We stopped in Cincinnati to see the family there and to take a nap. Later we were stopped because the freeway was closed near Dayton for an accident. Also, there is a long detour for construction at Detroit. We arrived here at 4:00am.
Cheers....

pcarrellhowmusIt has a converted Model A Ford motor for power. That part sticking up from the engine area looks suspiciously like a glow plug engine part. Also, across the very top of the pic it looks like the cutoff writing may say "Model Airplane", but I could be wrong. Cool old pic anyways.

Nope, it is the real thing, as I have seen the actual plane. That part sticking up is the radiator I believe. There was never a model of the plane built that I know of. BTW the words above the photo that are cliped say MODEL A FORD. Barney used to say that on one side of the cockpit there was a sign saying "This airplane built by Bernard H. Fox, 167 Telyea St., Canandaigua, NY". On the other side of the Cockpit there was a plaque that said, "This plane unfit to fly" from the US Government....(FAA). He used to say that the plane was built much stronger and handled better than the Piper Cub (He built many of them from designs published after Piper stopped building them) and the the wheel struts were twice the strength of the Cub. It was just that the Pietenpol was not an appoved design (as it had never been submitted and tested). It still could be flown as an "Experimental Aircraft". My FIL was a long time member of the Experimental Aircraft Association.
Some info (and orderable plans) can be found here: http://www.pressenter.com/~apietenp/ Notice the same "part" on the 80 year old photos in the plans shown. Here is a site with a close up of the part you refer to Philip: http://www.airminded.net/piet/piet.html
I was wrong on the date of his building the Pietenpol. It was the early 1960s. Just about the time I started to date his daughter. The original design of the Air Camper was from the 1930's. From his Obituary:
"Still his first love was airplanes and by the early 60's he transformed his basement and garage into an airplane workshop. For the next 30 years Barney built 6 or more airplanes from scratch. The first airplane was a Pietenpol Monoplane with a Model A Ford engine. He actually hand carved the propeller for that plane."
Barney built a second Model A Ford conversion like the one used on the Pietenpol with another hand carved propeller that is still on display at the Glenn Curtis Museum. Last I knew it is right in the middle of a group of monstrous WWII plane engines. They have there to provide some perspective on the size of motors used on aircraft. BTW one of my favorite photos of Barney and His Wife is of them riding his 1923 Harley Davidson Motorcycle that he bought for $30 used.
