I've been away for a few days.... Someone is dealing with arcades...we ended up with Arcadia.  Arcadia is also a place, real, or imaginary, offrering peace and simplicity...(Def. #2. Websters New Unabridged Dictionary, 1996.)

Jeff - You inspired me to give the brick mortor another try.  It would make a big difference in the apperance to the factory and office building.  If mine comes close to looking like yours, I'll be pleased..

Good evening,

Wow...lots to catch up on in here.

Sunny skies, Mechanicsville HBD says it's 56 degrees... a little windy otherwise darn-near perfect here. Now tonight and tomorrow we're looking for a potential blizzard. Iowa: tornado one day, blizzard the next...and I'm not exagerating.

Picked up a last-minute/short notice gig for today. Yesterday, Mr. Publisher sends me an email asking if he'd told me about a training fire Solon was doing today. No, he did not. I send back an enthusiastic I'LL DO IT! I hear nothing back. Last night, I call Mrs. Editor and end up leaving a message. Mr. Publisher calls me back, from the bar, possibly half-lit...says he'll either call or e-mail later. Finally, at almost midnight...I get the story lead: Solon Fire doing a house burn. I get the address...and that it should be a weenie roast around 11 AM.

I love fighting fire, and I love fireground photography...so I figure on getting all the pre-marshmallow roast stuff too. I'm up at 6, out the door by 7, and at the scene a little before 8. No signs of anybody, so I roll back into Solon to their ultra-sweet station. Get there just in time to sit in on the briefing. Roll back out, and man-oh-mama...those guys did a nice job. Like my department, they're all-volunteer, but they've got members who are career firefighters for Cedar Rapids and Iowa City. The career guys do a good job of sharing their knowledge and experience. I ended up with over 200 shots to edit, will submit 17 to Mr. Publisher and Mrs. Editor (THAT editor). I thinned down the raw image file to around a hundred or so. Eventually, I'll put them on a CD...and mail it to the Solon Chief.

*yawn*

Robby P: Man, HOW do you get such awesome rust effects??? Again, the rust looks like a tetanus shot would be needed to even LOOK at the car. Bow

Rob: sorry to hear of your ongoing struggles with the IL's... You're living the scenario I'm fearing and trying to prepare for. IL's (both sides) are OK now...but you just never know when everything will turn upside down. Rob, we're pulling for ya...

Phillip: Probably be too late by the time you read this ramblin' of mine, but I doubt you'll have any trouble finding the words for your flock. Hey, if nothing else, you can always launch pies at the sleepers 'eh??

I'm only scratching the surface here, just too much to catch up on.

Chloe, Flo, whomever...a large 7-Up please, and I'm gonna go stretch out in a booth...been a long, but good day. Time for a nap.

Thanks for the comments.  When I weather a car, I like to have everything done.  95% of the time the go to "the bay" for selling.  This one is going that way in a day or so.  I like to do quality work, makes the car look better/realistic.

When I weather my cars, well its half way done.  They are my cars Wink.

I guess I will go get some hot dogs going on the grill.  Come by if you want any Pirate.

Coffee refill, please & thanks.

Twister (a smart horse) lead her pasture mates through the down gate in the creek and visited the back pasture horses where our x-stallion (now a gelding) lives and what a ruckus. I returned them to the front pasture using the oldest trick in the book "feed".

If a tree falls in the forest and you are there, you sure do hear it crash. An huge old snag fell while I was nearby. Was quite a site.

Hey, I'm taking up a new hobby..."rope making". For my first project, I think I'll make a noose. Not saying who it's for.Evil Won't bother y'all with the details.

Hope everyone else is having a nice day. Cowboy Rob

Jeff - I like the weathering on the enginehouse roof. Thumbs Up And where'd you find that G&D boxcar? Wouldn't mind buying one of those myself, so long as they're affordable, anyway. I have some articles on the Gorre & Daphetid in some older issues of MR at home, and John Allen's approach to MRR'ing was a big draw for me to MRR'ing from way back. Yeah!!

The painting of the roof was done with three colors. Red oxide primer, gray equipment primer and flat black. The base color is red oxide. I then did a medium overspray with the gray followed by a light overspray of the black. I got the G&D boxcar from another member on this forum. The price was right (free). He didn't need it and put up a thread on the forum letting others know that he had it and if someone wanted it to give a PM about it. I guess I was first in line. I got it for the purpose of using it, not have it be a shelf queen.

Jeff: The weathering on that engine house has made all the difference in the world, and the gray mortar is a great touch. I agree that the chalk is too heavy and bright, not an aged look. I looked out the engine facility kit I told you about, but it's too big for where I want a building. However, I do have a kit for a car repair shop with 3 tracks that will fit where I have my RIP track and two other stub sidings. With very little re-alignment I can fit t hose tracks to the repair shop floor plan. Only glitch is that the plastic base has warped, and I'd like to use it as it has the track grooves molded in. Maybe if I take a hot iron to the underside I can flatten it again. The size is just right, and my long RIP track can run right through the shop and continue beyond. (don't think that makes it an Archade thoughWhistling) About time I did a building again.

Yeah, I thought the white chalt would be overpowering. It also has an unfortunate tendency to wash off when the weathering spray is applied. That doesn't happen with the paint. When the paint is dry it's the same color as mortar, so I've been told. I have a problem with seeing shades of gray so I don't know for sure. It looks like mortar to me. I only helped my father lay brick on two buildings and a brick wall beside a pool not to mention the concrete walkways, home foundations, patios and drainage projects we did over the years. Neither of us is capable of doing that again.

Philip-Well that relieves me of some things to think about in Church tomorrow. Guess I'll keep checking in tonight. The prayer for you to find the words is still in effect just a bit earlier. Palm Sunday services huh. No pressure. Ooops sorry. I myself am a disciple tomorrow as we walk in with Jesus and the children. Maundy Thursday, I'm Peter and we read a part ( I hope I can find my script by then) as we re-enact the Last Supper, and again on Good Friday services I'm a centurion as we crucify the Savior. I get to do the nailing. You should have seen the eyes of the guy who's playing Jesus! Shock

Well back to working on the pressure washer. Plastic pump. Spring pressure regulator. Nothing looks wrong. Just doesn't work. Waste of my time but worth a shot.

Good afternoon Diners!  How cool is this? I'm at the public library in the same building as the local TRAIN SHOW!  So, I've just done the show, and scored 4 built up houses and a Pole station awning from an estate sale, plus a covered hopper, and 5 passenger cars for a total of $57.00 Cnd. I feel pretty good about that.  No sign of Fergie, a nd Luc wasn't there, but he was going to be later in the afternoon any way. Layout-wise a poor show, and fewer vendors than last year too. However this time, since I got what I came for, I'm not too disappointed.

Jeff: The weathering on that engine house has made all the difference in the world, and the gray mortar is a great touch. I agree that the chalk is too heavy and bright, not an aged look. MRC's tech dept has found the "off" CV for my 1645 decoder in the VIA P42. That feature was dysfunctional in the original decoder, but works in its replacement. (no-hassle warranty, my favourite kind! Thumbs Up) They also gave me the other MRC sound decoder models that use the same function to kill the sound. It's a pity there is no way to silence the decoder and keep the train running. That would be handy for running in a tunnel. Does anybody know of N Scale sound decoders that have a "mute while running" feature?

RobbyP: The rust over the wheels is a supurb detail! I really like the way you have it tail off. Leaves me to wonder what spray is left to kick back up the end of the following car!WhistlingClown

I appreciate it, but by Sunday morning, it'll be too late.  Our church meets on Saturday night.  We're a baptist church, but we don't even have a Sunday service.  We have a mostly younger adult crowd and we found that it was easier for parents to get the kids ready for church if they had all day rather then trying to pry them out of bed, force them into cloths, stuff their necks full of groceries, and heard them into a classroom. Robby, when are you going to install the plexiglas 'ground' panels with the mirrors on your layout, so your visitors can see all your work under there? Whistling

CN Charlie, I'm sure you're right -  I have one of the Revell enginehouse kits, and you're right, IHC has been making some of the kits from the old Revell dies/molds. I think IHC currently makes the freight station and a couple other maintenance buildings, but I'm not sure the Revell enginehouse is being produced by anyone now. And were you talking in terms of Fahrenheit temps? 'Cause if that +8 is Celsius, that's pretty warm for your neck of the woods. Cool

I'll get to my breakfast for now. Might take a little Zzz after that - if Duke's not sprawled out in the back booth and taking it all up, anyway. Wink May all you Diners have some good MRR'ing time today!

Blessings and prayers,

Ray- Three definitions of "Arcade" that I can think of. An area with games and such, you know like Penny Arcade. A open aired shopping mall I've heard called an Arcade. We call them Strip malls around here, but I think they refer to a sort of grouping of strip malls.(?) And just learned that where a train goes through a covered portion of a building such as a partially enclosed loading dock, is called an Arcade.(see thread on "Locomotive passes through building). So you see I have no idea what arcade Barry is modeling. Confused Dunce

Good Morning Diners!

Well it is a sunny day in Winterpeg and yes it is still winter. They say the temp will be -1 today but it is supposed to get up to (loud fanfare) +8 later in the week!!!! Dare I hope that spring is actually coming? Can anyone tell me what it is like, as I have only dim memories. Actually though spring only lasts for about a month here as we seem to go from winter straight into summer.

Lee, thanks for the tip on the headlight. I didn't cut the wires on my first attempt to install the decoder but have now done so but I think I'm too late as I'm convinced the decoder is fried. Did you put the decoder in the tender for your IHC Mountain?

Jeff, that engine house is looking good. I too used a paint wash to bring out the motar and also to get the shine off. I used a light gray as I thought that the mortar would be dirty on an old engine house that held coal  burners.

Jim, the engine house kit is made in Germany as it seems are most of the Walthers building kits so who knows, it very well could be a version of the Polla kit. These companies buy and sell the molds. It seems to me the old Revell HO structure kits are still being produced by someone, perhaps IHC?

I'm off to the LHS this morning to see if I can get another wiring harness for a decoder I have. Think I'll pick up another N scale stock car too, as I'm sure those CN versions he has are out of production.

Hope everyone has a good day,.

Mornin' everyone!

A dreary day here in the Finger Lakes, cold (38°F High), windy, with rain and snow.  Tonight will be more of the same.  Tomorrow will be sunny and mild.

Zoe, I'll have a bottomless cup of coffee and a bowl of hot oatmeal with brown sugar to keep me warm this morning.

Galaxy, I have been also following the news from Binghamton closely.  That is sort of my old stomping ground way back when.  I taught for 11 years in Waverly.  My family went into Binghamton every now and then to do some shopping and have a nice dinner.  My prayers are for all the people whose lives have been so drastically changed by this and for each of the victims!

Coffee in a  BURLINGTON NORTHERN  mug, please & thanks.

***Jeffrey, nice brick effect. And I always got a kick out of the G&D line, as well as the rest of that fellas layout funnies.

***Robby, I can hear it now: Cpmpany says, "Wow, those are some way cool weathered train cars". Robby says, "Wait until the train derails so you can see the bottoms". CoolThumbs Up

With the influx of brass track from Lee, this opens up a few more possibilities. If we use brass for the track that goes to the lumber mill, then there are probably enough EZ track sections to run down to the carnival/circus, rather than the planned non-functioning section of track just for display.

Only 3 more days until online store ships out 1 pack of tight radius (HO) eztrack sections & my (N) unitrack crossing track...and then the fun begins.

Inlaws are wearing us out. They are a LOT of work. FIL fell another 3 times last night. My wife is starting to wonder what to do with them longer term. Their mental states are downright frightening.

Hope everyone is doing well today. Cowboy Rob

Mornin, an irish coffee please Janie

BIBLE SALES

A pastor concluded that his church was getting into very serious financial troubles. While checking the church storeroom, he discovered several cartons of new bibles that had never been opened and
distributed.
So at his Sunday sermon, he asked for three volunteers from the congregation who would be willing to sell the bibles door-to-door for $10 each to raise the desperately needed money for the church.
Jack, Paul and Louie all raised their hands to volunteer for the task.
The minister knew that Jack and Paul earned their living as salesmen and were likely capable of selling some bibles. But he had serious doubts about Louie who was a local farmer, who had always kept
to himself because he was embarrassed by his speech impediment. Poor Louis stuttered badly. But, not wanting to discourage Louis, the minister decided to let him try anyway.
He sent the three of them away with the back seat of their cars stacked with bibles. He asked them to meet with him and report the results of their door-to-door selling efforts the following Sunday.
Anxious to find out how successful they were, the minister immediately asked Jack, "Well, Jack, how did you make out selling our bibles last week?"
Proudly handing the reverend an envelope, Jack replied, "Using my sales prowess, I was able to sell 20 bibles, and here's the $200 I collected on behalf of the church."
"Fine job, Jack!" The minister said, vigorously shaking his hand. "You are indeed a fine salesman and the Church is indebted to you."
Turning to Paul, "And Paul, how many bibles did you sell for the Church last week?"
Paul, smiling and sticking out his chest, confidently replied, "I am a professional salesman. I sold 28 bibles on behalf of the church, and here's $280 I collected."
The minister responded, "That's absolutely splendid, Paul. You are truly a professional salesman and the church is indebted to you."
Apprehensively, the minister turned to Louie and said, "And Louie, did you manage to sell any bibles last week?" Louie silently offered the minister a large envelope.
The minister opened it and counted the contents. "What is this?
"The minister exclaimed. "Louie, there's $3200 in here! Are you suggesting that you sold 320 bibles for the church, door to door, in just one week?"
Louie just nodded. "That's impossible!" both Jack and Paul said in unison. "We are professional salesmen, yet you claim to have sold 10 times as many bibles as we could."
"Yes, this does seem unlikely," the minister! agreed. "I think you'd better explain how you managed to accomplish this, Louie."
Louie shrugged. "I-I-I re-re-really do-do-don't kn-kn-know ff-f-for sh-sh-sh-sure," he stammered.
Impatiently, Peter interrupted. "For crying out loud, Louie, just tell us what you said to them when they answered the door!"
"A-a-a-all I-I-I s-s-said wa-wa-was," Louis replied, "W-w-w-w-would y-y-y-you l-l-l-l-l-like t-t-to b-b-b-buy th-th-th-this b-b-b-b-bible f-f-for t-t-ten b-b-b-bucks ---o-o-o-or--- wo-wo-wou ld yo-you j-j-j-just l-like m-m -me t-t-to st-st-stand h-h-here and r-r-r-r-r-read it t-to y-y-you??"

Mornin' all. Coffee and a cinnamon roll please. Suppose to be around 60F and sunny today. I need to mow my yard!!!(shaking head). Chincy pressure washer is now junk and something else laying around. Maybe I'll dissect and see if the pressure regulator is adjustable. Chances?

Jeff- I really like the mixture of mortars on the engine house. Looks like it's old and has been tuck-pointed and repaired. Looking good!

Robby-Ok, tell the truth. How do you get under those cars and crop the photo to make it look like it's a model! Seriously, fantastic detail. Especially the scale splatters!!!!

Ray- I'm glad to see you finally got around to takin' care of the folks at Cooley's! I'm glad to see you're accepting responsibility for the well being of everyone along the SLOW ? ! Smile,Wink, & Grin

Garry- Baggage/mail car looks great also.

I feel so repetitious on these compliments to everyone, but hey. I call 'em like I see "em folks. Sorry.

Went to the FLHS Thursday. There are signs around Springfield about a Train Fair at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in the ORR building on Sunday from 10-4. I meant to ask the kind gentleman, Tom who works there during the week, more info but I got jawin' about other stuff and forgot about the question. So that's all I know. Parking should be free I'd think. Who knows how much to get in. Our son and his significant other have invited us over for dinner that day, and I have no idea what time so I don't know if I'll make it or not. Knowing her, I'm in for a meal of macaroni and cheese (from a box), chicken nugget things (because it‘s Sunday otherwise hot dogs), and tater tots. Sigh

Worked a bit on the re-do of the old section of the layout. Still have a bad spot. Why is it the only bad spots or switches that give you fits, are the ones you can hardly reach!! I have two, count ‘em two spots that are hard to reach and guess what, yep you guessed it.Banged Head Hope to get to do some this weekend also.

Oh and Barry-I have learned yet another definition for the word "Arcade" this time involving a train. I now have no idea what you are building.BlindfoldLaugh

Have a Great Day.

HI GUYS!

JimRCGMO

Galaxy, I don't know if I'd say 'priceless', though I definitely believe the 'pain' part of that. Hope that van runs super-duper-fine now!

My condolences and prayers for the families of the shooting (and those who were in the building when it happened but survived, as they will have their own wounds to heal).AngelAngel

Blessings and Prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

The van certainly run quieter now. But the brakes are starting to shimmy and either will need new brakes or need to have tires balanced again. But I will need 3 new tires SOON, too. I'm at a point on the van where I'm starting to pay for it all over again. It would help if I could do some of the work myself, but I can't.

As far as those in the shooting rampage at the American Civi Association in Binghamton, NY yesterday death toll had increased to 15 with 4 critically injured. Besides being breaking news for most of the day on national TV station news, we also made BBC's international news from America. Not quite how we want to be put on the map. Extra prayer candles will be up for all souls lost and those who struggle with the issues steming from that unfortunate event.

Yes, Robby P. the cold weather returneth for a few days, Along with some strong winds! In this area we can have snow on or after Easter! {the 12th}.Easily. Welcome to the Northern Nether regions! It was worse when I was a kid some odd years ago. Snow right up to June. We had 2 seasons: Winter and July/August. Now at least it's more temperate. Hmmm, maybe there is something to global warming.....

Well have as greata day as you deserve or as you can!

Mornin' all!

Jeff, good lookin' engine house and car!

Well, I was supposed to pick up my bike from the shop last night, but they weren't done with it yet.  Seems the parts took a bit longer to get there then they planned.  The last parts arrive today, then they're closed Sunday and Monday.  Monday and Tuesday are calli9ng for snow (That is SO uncool!), so I told them I might just pick it up Wednesday.  That'll be nearly two weeks that it's been in their shop.  My garage looks so empty!  I took it in for tires and brakes.  Not only are they a bit backed up this time of year, as you can imagine, but, since my bike was such a low production bike, model specific parts like the brake pads usualy aren't just off the shelf items.  Guess thats the price you pay for marching to a different beat, huh?

Indianapolis, Indiana
Currently:
35°F Clear

Today: sunny. Highs in the lower 60s. North winds up to 10 mph.
Tonight: partly cloudy then becoming mostly cloudy. Lows in the lower 40s. East winds up to 10 mph increasing to 10 to 15 mph after midnight.

So the head pastor of our church is out of town this week.  He called me up last weekend and asked if I'd fill his shoes while he's gone.  Tonight, I'm not doing kids church like usual......I'm out with the big people!  It should be fun!  (Don't think for a minute that my enthusiasm is not tempered with extreme humility and a keen awareness of the gravity of this privilage though.  I'm just excited, thats all.)

Its a cold morning, um where did the warm temps go?????

Well I am going out for the day.  Go to some craft stores, otherstores, and make a stop at a buddys house.  Maybe some trains will come by.  Thats where I got the 7 engines, 8 cars from.

Jeff, its really coming along.  Very nice.

I have been working on the bottom of this car for at least 5 hours.   5 HOURS!!! FOR A BOTTOM OF A CAR!! Blindfold.  I am trying to get it done late tomorrow.  Thats why I have to go out and get some stuff for it.  Well here's the shots, and everybody have a good day.  I will be back in later.

Good morning.

It's 50 and clear. The high will be close to 80 and it will be partly cloudy.

Yesterday I got quite a bit accomplished. I got rest of my new engine house done then set to work on the buildings that will be attached to it. I was considering what to use to show up the mortar lines. In the past I always used chalk or powdered tempura but both are hard to come by here. The only chalk (other than wildly colored sidewalk chalk) is the standard white chalk sticks. When turned in a jumbo plastic pencil sharpener I can get fine shavings that can then be rubbed into the mortar lines. This time though I decided to try something else. I have some gray acrylic paint on hand so I used an old structure as a test bed. I used the paint on the bricks on the left and chalk on those on the right and at the top.

The chalk shows up quite bright and the bricks stand out in sharp relief. Not what I'd want for a aged look. The paint shows up the mortar lines just fine and gives the bricks an aged look without having to do any additional weathering. I decided to use the paint. I also got my new Gorre and Daphetid (John Allen's road name) boxcar assembled and got the first coat of Matte-Finish on it before dark. Boy, was it glossy! Sometime today I'll hit it with the alcohol/black acrylic spray then do the Matte-Finish again. I have to get a new pump sprayer first though. My old one is locked up tighter than a clam with lockjaw! The engine house and associated structures will also get the alcohol/acrylic paint treatment so they'll have a dirty smoky appearance.

Jeff, where'd you get that G&D car? Someone making a commemorative, or what? Photos when you're done, please.

Not quite done yet but here's a photo for you.
