 Good morning.

It's 29 and partly cloudy out here by the lake. It's a nice warm 72 in here where I am. The high today should be in the upper 50's and it will be partly cloudy.

Did some initial prep work yesterday to modify the double entry doors of the Walther's engine house. My intent is to make it into one wide entry instead of two narrow ones. This will allow me to run two tracks in from a turnout placed in close proximity to the structure. There are still two other projects that require my attention so I at least have something to keep me occupied for a while.

Today's Weather for:

Unca Roggie.... I looked on the website briefly, and (of Course) looked up CB&Q. Most of the pix of Burlington were of a wreck I recall.

Firstly: I'm glad that it sounds like I DID pass on some NEW information to some of you folks (its usually that it is ME who is the last to find out about something.)

In fact, I had a feeling of horror awhile after I wrote up that thread about Railpix, that someone here may reply that mine was the seventeenth thread someone started about the same darn subject.

One drawback of that site, in my opinion, is how many of the photos are of horrendous train wrecks.  I'm not sure why people find them THAT fascinating.

I just skip on by them, and snatch up some of those terrific wide vista shots, and include them on my revolving screen saver for a month or so, til I refresh the collection.

There is a shot of a big steam engine pulled train, coming at the camera's point of view, with a 50's massive Buick waiting at a grade crossing, that is SO cool, you have to stare at it over and over to convince yourself it is NOT a great PAINTING someone did.  That can be found in the "all time faves" section in there.

Anyways, enough of that.  I wanted to mention how I also liked the timber wall {pictured way back there} that Sue also noticed and mentioned she liked.

I instantly went back in my mind to how I made a 1:1 version of such a wall, several years ago, using that awful creosote-encrusted, backbreakingly heavy railroad tie-type timber (NEVER AGAIN!  But I may try reproducing it in HO scale, now that I see how good it can look.)

OH, and I'd also like another small plate of gravel, if there's any left after midnight in here...pretty chewy, I have to admit, but makes for great ruffage, I'm finding.

Praying Mantis are neat little creatures. Love having them around. There is at least one black spider (fast hunting variety) that lives on and around this computer desk in my studio. Whatever it is finding to eat, I'm happy to have it working the nightshift. I do not kill spiders, except black widows of which we have a large population here on the ol' farm.

Couldn't sleep so did a load of laundry. Tired now...Good Night (again) Sleepy Rob

Tom ... save the black widows for SP fans! Big Smile

Everybody .... I looked again at the site Unca Roggie mentioned.  Their photos included those of a bad wreck in 1964, and it referred to another site for more info on the wreck. If you want to see pictures of lots of smashed up E units go to the following link. The series of pictures includes a few days following the wreck, and you can see one or two passenger trains running through the wreck site. You will also see locomotve parts laying around as locomoties were dismantled at the wreck scene. S total of nine E units were on the two wrecked trains.

Evening all.  It was 72 here in SunnyCal today--wore a short sleeved shirt to choir practice.  I mean, C'MAWN, it's supposed to be JANUARY, isn't it?   We rehearsed for Baptisms this weekend.  Naturally, the 5:15 Saturday Vespers has the most of the little darlings, so we'll be there a while, LOL!   One of the choir members grouched, "Can't we dip them all in at ONCE and just get it over with?"

Spent the day crawling under the benchwork, tightening and re-soldering connections and busses.  Layout seems to work better since I got rid of that BLI whistle doo-hickey.  However, one of my Mountains came roaring out of a tunnel with a rather angry spider clinging to the headlight.  Ah, Winter operations!   At least it wasn't a Black Widow.  For some strange reason, the garages in the neighborhood have become infiltrated with them.  I think it's the weather.  So far I've only seen a couple.  I remember one late summer a couple of years ago when I had a Praying Mantis hopping a ride on a flat car--THAT was fun!  I took the little dear out to the garden where he'd get a better diet.  Next day he was back on the layout.  I figured that he liked my model forest better than the bushes in the back yard.  Either that, or he'd discovered where more little insect critters were than I knew about.  Ah, nature!Tongue

I'm going to go out and hopefully finish up the wiring tomorrow and see if all the tightening and re-soldering has cured my 'drop' problem.  Now, a question, and hopefully some answers:  I'm using Atlas slide-switches to control my blocks.  Would I be better off getting actual Toggle Switches to do the same thing?  Remember, I'm DC (by choice, BTW) and I'm running in an uninsulated garage.  I'm just wondering if maybe actual Toggles might improve some of my problems.  Any hints or opinions are MOST welcome, believe me!   I know a lot of you have seen photos of my layout and pretty much like what I've done, but when it comes to wiring and electronics, I'm just a Major Doofus, a lot of the time.

Best to all, prayers to those in need.

Tom Big Smile

PS:  By golly, I see it's the top of the page.  Late evening snacks on me, Flo.  Frankly, I'll take some beef and cheese Nachos, but for cryin' out loud, hold the Cilantro.  I HATE that stuff!

Chamomile Tea, please.

***Ray, nice work on the power pole, and for that matter "the rest of the scene as well".Thumbs Up

***Jim, add to the UP logo some Starbucks brand coffee and yea, it's a pricey cup. And Oh So Good!

I went ahead and taped down some Tyvec in the train room. If nothing else it will provide an extra degree of dust protection, as no matter how much I brushed that slab there was always some dust left behind. Would have mopped it, but just haven't been well enough the past two days to do that (and still manage the mandatory critter rounds). Anyway, a dense pad will still go down before the carpet. First thing we're moving into the new Train Room will be a pair of old couches.

Night all. Cowboy Rob

Well everbody, guess I better get home and hit the hay. Don’t know what made me so sleepy. Are there any toothpicks?

Oh..pictures! Let me see Ray. Whoops! What’s that? Oh sorry Paul whatcha doin down there? Real nice power poles. You scrap built this? Great job! Love the scenery too.

Jeff- I too am impressed with the interior of the Shell station. I wasn’t aware that those photos would look so good. They give a 3d look that I really wouldn’t have expected to happen. I will try that myself. Keep going like this and I’ll put in for a job there. Looks like it would be a great place to work.

Well Barry, It’s gonna be around no temp for a couple of days in central Illinois.

Better head home before Jim brings in all the lawyers. I hope I can quit chuckling before they see me.

Prayers to those in need and stay warm all.

Ray,  Is your upper retaining wall made of wood?

Yep.  That has been there for around 25 years.  Made it back in the days where I had no money for the hobby, period....... (my wife and I had 2 bank accounts there was her account which was hers to use and their was our bank account which was......... ah ........ kept in her purse.......)  Anyway that was scrap wood from the wood shop next door to my Music room.  We cut it as small as we could and it was just about right for a massive timber retaining wall.  Fairly common in the North East.

Good evening DIners.........

Jerry !!!! ............Welcome home! I hope your health will be OK now.

WOW, diners ...Did you see what I saw??.... Chow hounds Ryan, OC, and Jim CG have some really stiff competition now. Todd strolls in the diner and eats a GIANT Ribeye steak. Yikes!, The thing must have been 32 oz.!.....and when he's done eating a huge main course, he orders dessert..... Not just a little item to sweeten the taste buds......Nope...He gets PECAN PIE with not just one....BUT TWO scoops of ice cream...... Amazing!

Jeff .... Your Shell station looks terrific.....you can practically read "10-W-30" on the oil cans! Remember those cans that required a seperate spout that you punched into the can to add oil to the engine of your car?

Ray ... your scenery looks good and I like the poles.

CN Charlie ...It would be fine with us if you kept the cold stuff up there. Canada is sooooo beuatiful...BUT ........those winters can be something!

Robby P ..... The propane tank looks good.  You will need about ten for a 1200 square foot house if CN charlie keeps sending the frgid stuff.

Unca Roggie.... I looked on the website briefly, and (of Course) looked up CB&Q. Most of the pix of Burlington were of a wreck I recall.  Rock Island was detouring a passenger train onto the Burlington main line. As it entered the main line it was hit head on by a high speed Zephyr. I think their were many deaths. One of the engines in the photos was a CB&Q E7 that was scapped after that.

Paul... You certainly have long days.  I have been thinking of you and Mary Ann.  I know kideney disease is a really bad thing, and prayers continue.

Have a great evening everyone.

Howdy folks,

I tried to get in here a couple hours ago but the place was full (actually it was that darned "Time Out" message again).  Did notice about an hour ago that there is a new error page when that happens so maybe they are working on the problem....

Since I didn't get here before supper, Zoe, I'm ready for dessert.  I'll have a big slice of that Apple Pie over there on the counter with a nice hunk of Extra Sharp Cuba Chedder Cheese (used to go winter camping on Cuba Lake every February with the troop).  Oh and my evening cup of decafe if you would.

I spent a little time in the layout room finishing up a prototype for some Line Poles for the layout.  I brought a couple quick  photos with me to share.  Let me know what you think.  This is made with materials I have on hand just to see how it came out.

and from the other direction:

That cold front is just reaching the Finger Lakes.  Had about an inch of snow this evening so far and it is supposed to stay in the single digits here for the next 3 days.  Got the wood stove cranking and the furnace will undoubtedly run most of the night as well.

Oh that pie and coffee hits the spot.  See you later!

evening guys, finally quit getitng those freakin timeout messages.

Well, I've sprayed my U23B and boxcar w/ semi-gloss finish, and i've added powder to my boxcar. I went WAY overboard, but since the spray ussualy wipes most of the powder off, I'm hoping this'll work (gonna spray it again before adding powder to my U23B).

Evening all, nothing much happened at the tracks today... I did get a basic drawing of my layout done, maybe now that I've got a better look on paper, I can really transfer that into something that I can use on XTrkCAD.  If not, then I guess I'll just use just the paper drawing.  Other than that, I guess I'm going to continue trying to get all my engines current (as far as paint jobs, detailing, ect).  Zoe, a Dr. Pepper, and a bowl of ice cream, please.

It's gonna be a little on the cool side here tonight. The low is projected to be 28. Now I know to you northern folk that's a day at the beach but here it's considered cold.

That would be considered cold anywhere, Jeffrey!

But, you are right, facing negative numbers and maybe single digit highs, 28* would seem like a day at the beach!

I'm waiting for the warm January thaw we usually get each year.

Hope you have a snuggle blanket to keep you warm.

Hi guys

A cup of Hawaiian Isles Kona Chocolate Macadamia Nut Coffee in {gasp!} a CSX mug please!

Wow! the diner has changed!

I've just been lurking some here lately. Thought I'd stop in and say HI! instead of just peeking in the windows.

Had too many repair bills at Christmas time so never got to build my new under-the-tree layout due to no money for it. That kind of took the wind out of my sails, the j and o out of my joy, and the excitement out of my train adventures. So I have just been lurking and somewhat envious. I do have some kits I could do, but as I said the wind was out of my sails.

Yes, its gonna git cold here too, maw! And 3 inches of snow and a foot, we should be so lucky. We've had more than that this year so far. Not humungo amounts but more than that. Seems we have to shovel fairly frequently. Most annoying is those 2 inch, 3 inch, maybe even 4 inch snow fall amounts. Enough to have to shovel and deal with messy roads, but not enough to make it worth one's while to fool with. Glad I'm not in some areas of the country though. No place is paradise, alas.

I hope the new fangled digital indoor/outdoor thermometer reads negative numbers well so I can know just how cold it really is out there while I enjoy my cozy 65-67* inside! AND that the new heat tape on the pipes works magic.

Well, it's been nice seeing everyone again, maybe I should stop in more often now.

Robby P.

I try to see what everybody has as far as weather wise.  Kinda gives me a idea to what to expect.  I think the most we have had this winter is about 3 inchs or so.  Nothing bad yet.

3"? HAHAHA LMFAO! That's funny. We got about a foot or so a while back. Not to mention the six or so inches we got in October...

Nothing for me, just here to talk.

As, guaranteed, no new updates. Band exam Friday- the most annoying phrase in the world is going through my head a million times a second, and I can't get it out. All six other exams are next week. However, we get Monday off, which I'll probably spend studying anyway, and we get next Friday, since that's make-ups. So basically, three day week next week. And just because our school is weird, we're running a Friday lab schedule tomorrow, and a Wednesday non-lab schedule on Friday(real world).

One lastthis evening, please & thanks.

***Jerry, thanks for the update. Bet it feels great to finally be back home.

***Robby, more nice weathering work there. We've come to expect nothign less from you.CoolThumbs Up

Got the hay up, except one bale which went to the pygmy goats. Chance of flurries here with temps in the teens by Friday night.

Anyone know if putting Tyvec (really good house wrap material) on top of a cement slab before carpet pad goes down would be a good idea or not? I have plenty of Tyvec left and thought it might add a vapor barrier. Anyone have any experience with or thoughts on this?
