Mornin' all!

Here Zoe, let me get that bill.  I'm covering lunch for this motley bunch.

Man, I couldn't sleep last night!  Didn't drop off til almost 12:30, then was back up a 4am.  At 5:15 I gave up trying to get back to sleep and took a shower then worked on my bike some after my Bible reading time.  Weather guesser is calling for some halfway decent temps today, so I decided to ride the bike into work.  It was a bit nippy when I started out this morning, but the ride home should be alright.

Indianapolis, Indiana
Currently: 28°F Mostly Cloudy

Wind: Southwest at 8 MPH
Humidity: 78%
Dewpoint: 22°F
Barometer: 29.98 inches and rising
Wind Chill: 20°F

Supposed to hit 42 or so today and 44 tomorrow.  After that it gats colder again.

The work thing is keeping me pretty busy today, but whats up with you?

TMarsh

Wolf Spiders- Harmless, yes. Helpful, very much yes. Creepy, Oh yeah. Especially when they get big and well fed. Look like they could take a badger. Maybe you could model a scene from Eight Legged Freaks?

This has all the makings of a 1950's Sci-Fi B flick!

Good Morning, Zoe - I'll just have a JR regular in a Santa Fe mug (that's AT&SF, not BNSF, thankyouverymuch! Wink), and a glass of Ed's OJ. Thanks!

I think after your day, Unca Rog, you should've had a nice slice of pie. Surely would've helped a bit. Did you check with Horizon on the Athearn BB? I've noticed that Athearn tends to want to nudge us toward those 'RTR' cars, but they do still make a fair variety of the ol' BB's.

Sign - Welcome to the Diner, Nick (Nittany Lion)! Have a cup of your favorite beverage on me (and maybe a slice of pie, too...).Smile

Sounds like we had a few tired Diners after I was in the Diner last night - Paul, Unca Rog, and Ray, among others. Rest up, guys - today's another day. Shock

Johnboy, did you see the MRP 2009 (I think it was the latest issue), where they were talking about using LED's for lighting the layout? They said up NOTB they can be had at a decent price (but not down here in the US, just yet Sigh). Supposed to use even less electricity than the curly fluorescent bulbs. Sounds like you got a lot done on your layout, putting all those backgrounds, lights and stuff in. Thumbs Up

JR, will be keeping your meeting today in my AngelAngel. Let us know how things go. Hopefully, they can soak those 'contractors' (I think that might be saying more than they're worth) with some of it for the sloppy job they did... But I'll get down off the SoapBox now.

Dave and Jeff - for me, I believe in coexistence with critters of more than four legs. I live inside the house and they live outside of the house (if they want to live...). It's been a while since I think I posted it here, but when I was married, the house we lived in had a carport out the back door from the basement, and a leak in the foundation running nearby, so the occasional water rotted out the foam weatherstripping on the bottom of the outside door. So come fall, we would occasionally get a field mouse in the house. One time, my daughter was having some friends for a birthday sleepover, and her mother had made a birthday cake that was sitting on the table in the kitchen. At one point shortly before the other kids showed up, one of us (not daughter, thankfully) found tiny pawprints at the bottom of the icing on the cake.Shock So mother quickly scraped that icing off and re-did that section (and cut any pieces for the kids from the untouched side).Oops After the divorce, my daughter and her mother moved to another house (which was probably good). A little something for your 'breakfast consideration'..Whistling

Jeff, the back of the firehouse looks good. Thumbs Up Is that side kind of away from easy viewing, as well? You may not need to do any additional work on it.

Last night I got the parts for the first building of the Walthers modular warehouse (the 2-story part) cut from the sprue. That took a while all by itself, and I haven't cut the windows and doors out just yet. Next step on this will be painting - personally, I want something other than green for the windows, and reddish brick instead of the yellowish color. So time to do as (Barry?) did and inventory my paint, see what's solidified in the jar over the years since I last used them and make up my shopping list....Sigh

Oh, got a postcard in the p.o. box yesterday from the (in-town) LHS, saying they were closing at the end of this month, and that everything would be 30 percent off. That'd be good, but I don't know that they have much I want/need. I may pick up some styrene sheets and stuff for scratchbuilding, and see what W-S stuff I can get to use. A lot of their Kalmbach books are ones I have, or ones I'm not interested in. Not a big loss for me, since 2-3 weeks ago they said they probably wouldn't be carrying much train stuff anymore. I'll order through our MRR club member/LHS-down-the-road owner or get stuff at H-L or online. I think the LHS that's closing got too much into the crafts and dolls stuff, which (to me) seems more like a luxury item (and not in as much demand over time). I'll swing by there on Sat. to see what's left there.

I'll join the crew at the window booth a while. Everyone take care and have some fun today! (Yeah!!, and some pie...) Uh, Ryan - let's NOT have any spider delicacies on the menu today, okay?

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

It's best viewed from the kitchen sink (southwest end of the layout) so is not in immediate view. The building still requires more work but that's a future project.

What's up everyone.

Exams are finally over. Theology was easy because he put all kinds of hints in the answers. Here's the answers to the matching:

ILOVETHEOLOGYANDIREALLYLOVEYOUGUYZITSTRU

And the multiple choice was :ABCDABCDDCBA. And, yes as you may have guessed the true and false was: FTFTFTFTFTTFTFTFTFTF. Easy. Same with Biology.

Well, I'm off to work on some scenery and whatnot.

 Good Morning

I was thinking about breakfast, but Jeff's taco soup looked mighty good.  I will donate a huckleberry cheese cake.  You all have been busy here.  I had to wade through 8 pages to catch up.  Miss a day and pay.

Eric,  Sorry to hear about your mom.

Robby,  Great weathering.  That rust looks 3 dimensional.

Johnboy,  I would stop by but I don't  believe that my seat or feet would last that long.Laugh

Coffee To Go, please & thank you.

***J.R., good luck at that meeting.

***Dave, how could you grow up in AZ and not have learned to love spiders? Spent the first 20+ years of my life there (Paradise Valley & Scottsdale) and only got bit one time by a Black Widow. Even now, I still welcome spiders into my home, as they take care fo the other insects I don't want inside. Also got stung by a scorpion once at a river down there...entirely my own fault.

Now for another of our cats. This one is Yin, our Bengal Cat. (Yang died some years ago) Tin lives at the barn and sometimes works the forest. She has wild & stunning eyes & a beautiful camo coat.

Need to run some hay rounds. Have a good day all. Cowboy Rob

Morning all from SoggyCal:  Wow, I go away for a couple of days and I've got almost EIGHT pages to catch up on.  Whew!

Well, thought I was retired this year, but ended up subbing the past two days at the high school--Leah, the choir director was on a Retreat.  It was fun--great seeing all of those kids again.  Had a couple of beginning choir classes with little Freshmen who didn't know who I was, but we got along well.  The rest of the classes was like Old Home Week.  I don't know how much we actually accomplished, but there were a lot of hugs and back-slapping involved.

Would I go back?  In a heartbeat!

Joe:  Glad your Finals are over, hope you aced them all.  So you like Theology, huh?  Reminds me of last year when one of my students was looking rather down, I asked him what the problem was, he said that he was having trouble in Theology.  I asked him what kind of trouble, he said he couldn't remember what the Trinity was.  I told him, "You're in a Catholic school, what's the first thing we do in the morning before class?"  He blinked, and said "Oh--YAH!"  "THAT'S the Trinity,"  I grinned.  End of lesson.

Jim:  About the mine trackage:  I use N-scale track for the tailings dump trestle and also the track running from the final crushing to its own tailings dump.  Generally speaking, out here in the west, mine track was between 18" and 24" in width, but the Empire Mine in Grass Valley (which is kind of the model for my Champion Mine) had fairly extensive electrified 3' guage track to their tailing dumps.  So the N-scale fits in fairly comfortably in my own scheme of things.  Unfortunately, it's hard to find HOn-30" dump cars.  I've had to do most of mine from scratch.  Jouef used to make a lot of HOn-30" industrial cars, but I can't find them anymore.

Jeff:  Really like the fire department.  How big's your Wolf spider?  I had one a couple of summers ago that used to hitch rides on my Yuba River Express.  BIG mother, but I sure didn't have any Garage Critters to worry about that summer.

Robby:  Just caught the photo of your hopper.  WOW!  GOOD WORK!Bow

Well, the snow-level's supposed to drop to about 4,000 feet today and tomorrow, so hopefully our fast-diminishing snowpack will get some improvement.  The reservoirs around here look like moonscapes they're getting so empty.  So I'm afraid that you guys in Southern California are going to be on your own filling your swimming pools this summer.  Whistling

Best to all, continued prayers to those in need.

It can span a 50 cent piece and still touch the ground. I'm going to catch it and relocate it to the underside of the neighbors home. He's always complaining about bugs coming in around the pipes. I figure a big spider should make a hefty dent in the bug population.

About lunchtime for me (I'm a late lunch kind of guy), Zoe, so how about one of those chili dogs, but make mine with some onions and cheese across the top, too, and oh yeah - a RBF, of course! Thanks!

Rob, are you sure you don't maybe have a baby snow leopard there? Looks a lot like a leopard pattern, for sure!

Jerry, you'll have materials for a lot of sheds and other things (around your mine, or other places). Good start, and keep at it! Thumbs Up

Robby - Wow!!, you weather in places I wouldn't even think about (mostly because it'd be out of sight for most to be able to see).BowThumbs Up

I'll settle back down in the window booth with my muchies and RBF for now.

Uh-oh: I read so many postings above since the one that referred to me and my search for what are becoming elusive blueboxes, that I've forgotten who it was that mentioned about it.

So much for thinking I haven't lost any of my short term memory.

In any event, all I was going to mention, is that I first went into the Horizon site, finding most everything I wanted to be out of stock, but picking out about 10 items as "runner ups."  Then went to the Hobby Central site (San Diego) to find the EXACT same information...as if they are the same company (?)

As I'd ordered from them before, I chose THEM again...just got a confirmation email that my shipment has left a town in Illinois, headed for me in Palm Springs, Cal.....(so it is NOT being handled in San Diego...one reason I chose them, figuring the closer the better----and even that if they rip me off, I can easily drive there in two hours and crash my car through their front window, in mild protest.)

I'll mention in here how things turn out, with both the Walthers order, and this one.

I also realized I asked for something in here from FLO last night, and she doesn't even work in this diner.  Duh.  Wait: maybe she's a part timer who was working the late shift?

Holy Cow!  After 2 in the afternoon here in the Finger Lakes.  Well I've already done a days w**k.  Took down all the winning Art and Poetry at the Methodist Church, delivered the first place entries off to the Finger Lakes Crimes (ah that's Times actually),  Sent the editor there an e-mail with the list of all the winners so they can put the info in an article they do each year for us.  Oh, and first thing this morning before I had breakfast, there was an e-mail from The FGLK letting me know that someone from there would do a clinic at the upcoming Division Meet (NMRA) in March.  YES!!!  Made my day start off very well!  I was praying that they would come through for me as our more or less theme for the meet is "Operations" and they will do a powerpoint presentation of how they do business.

Right now I am burning a DVD of phtots that I took at Sci-Tek Camp last summer (Boy Scouts) so they can use some of them for camp promotion.  Should have done that a few months back and I didn't.  I will be leaving ASAP to run that over to the Council Office.  Then on to school buildings to drop off prizes for the Art and Poetry........  Lucky I am retired and have all this "free" time.

Hey Jeffrey, that is still a baby....  My sister who used to live in Florida had one that lived in a drain in the floor of an addition onto the circa 1900 log cabin they owned.   It was at least twice that size.  Her daughter was terrified of spiders but put up with it since it stayed in the addition most of the time.  That is, until the night that she (the spider) decided to hatch out about 2000 babies on her bed in the middle of the night.  Major, complete, and total hysterical panic set in............  My sister had the only house on her street that didn't have cockroaches though.  That is a good idea to give it a new home under a trailer.  When I find spiders in the house here, I just put them outside (except this time of year).  We do have Brown Recluse in this area as well, but it is rare that they ever bite someone.

Rob you have quite a menagerie at your place.  That is great to take litter mates in together. The two I have were litter mates and they are still "best friends"!  According to my Vet, litter mates often have different fathers so may be very different looking.

Well I will finish my Mug of Coffee and get back to it!  Have a great day!

Well, I grew up far away from any major city.  So far out, in fact, that we had a community well that served the 10 families living in my area.  As for the bugs, well, my dad was stung by a centipede and put in the hospital for upwards of a week, my cousin was stung by a scorpion when he was 4 and nearly died and I took a Black Widow bite when I was 7 and also spent a great deal of time in the hospital.

It has taken a very long time for my parents and teachers and etc to finally convince me that things with 4+ legs actually DO have a purpose in the ecosystem and serve a function other than messing up the bottom of my boot :)

Good afternoon...

Robby.... I like the "Rock" covered hopper. I recall when the Rock Island went out of business. Other roads bought their equipment and stenciled their reporting marks on them. You might want to research and see what would be appropriate. In later years, you could see cars such as yours owned by other roads. Perhaps, CNW got those covered hoppers. I was with GTW in Michigan at the time, and we acquired some GP38-2's in the RI blue and white scheme. Some of them got ugly before being repainted. Other RI equipment was aquired by GTW, and I think it was gondolas and auto racks. My memory is fading a bit, and I'm not sure.

Ray, Tom, and others are talking about retiremnet. My problem with retirement is other people who assume I have more free time than I do, and expect me to apply my time doing stuff for them. Saying "No" is not as  easy as it should be. Younger people should not assume retirees have lots of time. Actually, the minutes become more precious as we enter the twilight of our lifetimes.

The spider stories continue. I suppose it's good they control insect populations, but perhaps a can of Raid is less distrurbing.

Today's a slow day for me. Every now and then an old back injury starts hurting again. I just have to wait until it's OK. I'm glad it does not happen too much, and I can catch up with my reading meanwhile.

Have a nice afternoon.

Garry, I was going to patch the car to Union Pacific.  I decided to keep it under the old name.  If I was going to keep the car, would have gave it a patch job.  Since it will make its way to eBay, I thought I would go with the old look.  Just incase someone models that era.

Same here Philip, even back when I was married I did most of the cooking. My late wife was a first class baker and made the PIES, cakes, and cookies, etc.  I love making dishes like Beef Stroganoff, Brajole, Turkey Dinner with all the fixin's and stuff like that.  Even better If I can be cooking out over the coals of a wood fire at camp.  (And yes I have done all of the above over wood coals while camping.)  The best chefs out there are often men!

Garry right you are.  My sister keeps telling me I need to say no to some of the groups I am with.  Trouble is I enjoy everything I do.  It at least keeps me busy and feeling like I can make a difference.....

I got the mail!             I got the mail!!!!

And in todays mail..................

There was a little itty bitty package.

On the outside of the package was a return address that said Caboose Hobbies...................

My railbars are here!  My Railbars are here!

(Do I sound exited???)

I placed an order for these with my LHS last November.  At that time Walther's Out of Stock listed them as being "In Stock".  By the time the order went in later that week, they were listed as "Out Of Stock"  with a deliver date of "unknown".........  I got a couple of packs from Caboose Hobby and managed to clean out the last of their stock.  About a week ago I sent an e-mail to Details West asking what the time line was for making them.  They replied that they are back in stock and had been shipped out to dealers 3 weeks ago.......  They also told me that Walthers should have then in stock as they had been shipped to them.  I just looked at the Walther's Out of Stock website and they say February 18 as the expected date.   HMMMMMM!!!  (It may be that they used up the shipment filling prior orders - it happens.)

Anyway I now have 6 packages of them right here.  Care to guess what I will be doing tonight???

I also got the tiny little glass beads from Sierra Scale Models that will be used for insulators on the line poles.  So now I have several projects that I can get done.

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

(having just gone back into my "saved" email to check)------> yep, its CHAMPAIGN, Illinois, alright (from which Hobby Central is shooting me my stuff)...their email DID come from a San Diego site, however...and they still encourage you to come to their STORE there, as they claim to have lots of the items listed as "out of stock to you peasants trying to buy via internet" or whatever it says, every time you spot a picture of exactly what you were looking for, on their website.

And, I just realized I should not be so concerned about getting the names right, when it comes to fictional waitresses in this diner...which is NOT fictional, right?  Wait!  Am I seeing dead people???
