It was about a year ago when I took everything down and boxed thing up to do a complete rebuild of my layout. I know I have more than 150 engines now from my last count. Allot of mine are older, but about a third of them are newer with DCC and some with sound. I would hate to count how many parts engines I have or one that are in parts only condition. I hate to throw anything away or part with it sometimes when it comes to my train item. I am about do for a downsize of some of the engines again on Ebay. I have a few freinds that always tell me, "you cant run them all at once"! I guess I like making an old or bad running loco run like a top and tinker with them, parts is parts I guess.

Sorry it took so long to reply - been in "trainless" Fredericksburg Texas for the Holiday.......
I have collected a "plethora" of HO ATSF & IC locos representing the '30s thru '50s. At last count, there were 65. Note that I have several ABBA combinations with the b units powered, and I counted each b unit as an individual loco. If you were to truly call ABBA or AB consists as 1 loco, then I am down to 44. However, I am selling off some on Ebay this month, trying to get the number down to a more manageable group. Diesel switchers are mostly P2K, with a couple of Kato and Stewarts. F Unit consists (F3, F7, F7, FT, FT, FT - all ABBAs) are Stewarts. E units and Alco PAs are P2Ks, and Alco RS are Atlas. Steamers are 4 BLI Paragon, 3 Bachmann Spectrum. Oh, almost forgot, got a new BLI RSD-15 Paragon that is in their shop as it is silent........
About half of the above are new in the box or test run only. I had the collector fever for 5 or 6 years and now realize that I can't use them all.......

About 200 or so. 63 in Espee, 44 in BN, 16 in MRL, 15 in SBD, 16 in C&NW, 13 in Oregon Central & Pacific, 6 in Amtrak, 4 in Mountain Pine Lumber, 1 in Southern and about six miscellanous units.
Overbrook RRI totally REFUSE to EVER put any of my 27 locomotives into any display case. So I guess that is the answer, I have 27 locomotives all on the layout, none in storage or in a display case.
Well, you seemed a little shrill. I guess if there is one thing I have seen in a forum with over half a million posts is that there are very few rules and even fewer admonishments applicable to model railroading and railroaders.
Well from have my first 4x8 layout, I've bought four locomotives. The motors in the GP-35's worked great for awhile, now when I turn them on all they do is scream. Well they were the 35 dollar starter DCC locomotives, the 8-40 CW are my best and favorite at the moment. I would like to get the newer GE's with sound.

Ah, Mr. O. I feel for you. So I guess you are at your LIMIT with 27, then. Whereas I have 20+ on my layout and still the rest in display cases from which I swap them around regularly(as noted in my earlier post in this thread)......giving me room to SHOP for MORE.
My advice to all model railroaders is simple:
Buy locomotives ... and lots of them!
Ah, well, I wanted to show a list of my 91 locos too, but my list is in table format with snapshots of my locos imbedded so I can remember what is what when I see one way down at the end of the line, but can't remember which loco # it is. I keep the list next to my controller.
So anyway I thought I would show how they look when not on the layout.
About 77 are in the cabinets, and the steamers are all in 4 of those camera cases (on the floor for the moment). I use another empty case with form-fit foam cutouts to carry locos to and from the layout as I have nearly had several knocked out of my hand by swinging doors otherwise.
Powered engines for actual use on my layout ? Seven - two home road (Chicago, St. Paul, Minneapolis & Omaha - "Omaha Road") yard switchers, one parent company (Chicago & Northwestern) road switcher, and 4 neighbouring companies (MSTL, GN, NP, MILW) road switchers for dropping off or picking up interchange traffic.
Of which maybe 4 will be on the layout at the same time - the two home road yard switchers and a couple of road switchers either delivering a cut of cars or picking up a cut of cars from my yard.

Last digit of road number is DCC id.
And yeah - I know that the Omaha road didn't have GE 44-ton and GE 70-ton yard switchers in Minneapolis in 1957.
I am using a bit of artistic license here - like pretending that GN GE 44-ton switcher #5201, sold as an industrial switcher to Iron and Steel Products Co in 1948 and renumbered #51, instead was sold to the Omaha road, was renumbered #51 and used at the West Minneapolis yard, along with a GE 70-tonner #53 aquired from somewhere else.
CMO had a mix of other switchers in the 50-series of road numbers when it was merged into C&NW in 1957 (#55 was an EMD SW-1, #56-57 were Alco S1s, #58, 59 and 60 were Baldwin VO-660s), so it is not such a stretch to assume that #51 and #53 could have been GE switchers.
Same with the MSTL Alco S1. MSTL didn't have any S1s - but they had an S2, aquired in 1941, and consequenly numbered 741 (engine no 7 bought in 1941). I am postulating that they also got an S1 in 1942, and numbered it #142. C&NW had S1s, but I like the paint scheme of MSTL.

I am a N-scale modeler and for the most part have my equipment in storage until I obtain a home that will house my layout and can only estimate the quantity at between 200 and 300 with list growing because I keep adding while I travel for my job.
I visit hobby shops in the areas that I work and often hit eBay for locos and rolling stock.

I have three engines...a GP38-3, a GP38-2 and an AC4400CW...all painted for Canadian Pacific.
You made me curious, so I went downstairs and counted. Currently on the layout (and almost all used during last op session) are 156 first and second generation diesels. Stored under the layout awaiting paint and decoders are another 30 or so. Just don't let the wife know.

Modern and running well (HO scale): a BNSF SD40-2, a UP SW1200 (can't recall manufacturers).
From my 1950s model RR: an HO Varney F3 and an American Flyer S-scale 4-4-2.
Another HO Varney F3 bought several years ago.
Recently bought used in not-running condition: an Athearn HO F3 and an HO GG1 (with working pantographs) of questionable vintage.Although it's not a locomotive, I also have an HO Budd RDC (can't recall the manufacturer) from 1953.

Very few of them are stock, most are kitbashed from minor to almost scratchbuilt, happens when you're sans layout for 3 years and are stuck with the workbench being your primary outlet.

I guess just under 200 diesels (and two Santa Fe Northerns). Most of my engines are Santa Fe, and are units that were in service in 1989 with a couple of exceptions. I tend to build my roster around certain diesels that were common in the area I model. There are no "blue boxes", most are Atlas and Kato, with some P2K and other stragglers. I do have a few Genesis.

2-8-0 times 2, 2-8-2, 2-10-0, 4-6-2 times 2, 4-4-2, SD9, F3A times 2, F3B, RS11 times 2, GP50 (hey, what's THAT doing there?), FA2, U23B, C420. That makes 17 loco's by my count, which technically is roughly 16 more than I really need to run the layout, but what the heck.
I only need just one or two more locomotives, and then I'll have exactly as many as I need and no more. I say that every time I buy a new locomotive.

Wow, I have four locomotives. Two Athearn, BB diesels, one Mantua Pacific, and a Bachmann Spectrum Consolidation. I may have more some day, but it's not important right now.
I have 54, all modern era diesels, mostly Norfolk Southern roadname. 24 of the 54 have sound and just about anything purchased in the past 2 1/2 years is sound equipped. I just finished putting a motor controller in a Blueline UP SD40-2 this morning. I am also going back and adding sound to some of the older units. The majority are Atlas units followed by P2Ks and then BLIs (both QSI and Blueline). My favorits are the Atlas Gold 8-40Cs, P2K SD60s and my Blueline AC6000W. I am eyeing a Kato BNSF SD40-2 Swoosh unit or an Atlas 8-40C Gold BNSF (if I can find one) as number 55.

I have only three: an SW1200 switcher, a GP9, and a GP38, and all are DC...still. I have a few dummy GP38s that are used for part-swapping, and all have the CN noodle indicating the early 70's, I'm told.

I guess the "i" stands for imaginary....it also means my formatting in Word was messed up. It is supposed to be a GP9 Phase 1 in the list, but Word changed the capital I to a small i. I guess the Roman Numeral messed things up. Sorry for the confusion.

Way to many locomotives not enough rolling stock...but this is my modern roster minus 10 that are not on the list and 6 that are not completed. Shifting my focus to BN 1970 merger power, I really do enjoy painting and detailing locomotives 1970 BN should provide some tough and interesting paint schemes to match

Premise: Small (generic SW USA local) layout (15' X 5') plus 91 locos and 200+ cars = variety and illusion grand layout, no two days are the same. The rest, while awaiting their turn on the layout, are on display in lighted cases.
Besides, the most fun I have had in years is to take a preowned loco and improve it with r&r and a good decoder.
More in my roster than I REALLY need...then some.
