That sucks Tom. I remember when we had to put our big yellow/white lab Comet down. He was an OLD dog, I forget how old. Poor boy could barely stand up. Well, they have to go. It really sucked for my sister back in Feburary when her little Jack Russel/Chiwawa died, cause it was unexpected (the dog had an allergic reaction to a rabies shot). We have a little area out back that I call our pet cemetary, I'll get a pic. There lies 2 hamsters, a guinea pig, a lab/golden retriever (Zach), Comet, and Molly (sister's old dog). There's also a corgie buried along the back fence, but further to the back (she died when the vet gave her to much sleep medicine). There's also an angel fish buried at the other end (my sister wouldn't let it get flushed). I'll get a pic of our little cemetary for ya'll. I'll go ahead and tell ya'll now, we currently have 4 dogs. An old corgie (Diana), a wired haired terrier mixed w/ lord knows what else (mine), a definite hound/bird dog that might also have lab/border collie/dalmation blood (Bullseye, my other younger sister & brother's dog(I have 2 younger sisters and a little brother and I'm the oldest), and a min pin/chiwawa that my sister got after Molly died. And there is also a tropic aquarium w/ about 10 fish.

On another note, I finally got my figures, so there'll hopefully be some pics of them soon. Also, football ends wednesday.

A strong coffee in a large UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

***Tom, I'm very sorry to hear of Lowell's passing. I understand fully how it feels to lose a four legged family member and it's never easy. All I have to offer is that Lowell had a wonderful, loving home and that he is now at peace. My sincere condolences.

Been busy here lately and too tired most of the time to visit the Diner. Wife is now on her way to Florida, taking her Dad to see the ocean one last time. A request he has had ever since his stroke. He seems pretty weak these days, so she thought it might be now or never. I'm staying here to keep an eye on the build and ofcourse take care of the critters.

RFDTV "Trains & Locomotives" is on at 6:00pm est.

All for now. Cowboy Rob

 Afternoon, Diners.

Tom, sorry to hear about Lowell's passing, but at least his misery is over. Sure hope the angels have cabeese up there. I know you (and those of us who've listened to the stories about him and Spooky in the Diner) will be missing him. Maybe you can figure a way to designate one of your cabeese something like the Lowell Memorial Caboose? A thought, anyway. AngelAngel for you and Spooky.

Blessings and prayers,

Tom - condolences on the loss of Lowell Sad.  Any plans to find a new companion for Spooky?

Paul - Sounds like you had a great time. I never coulda controlled myself in a situation like that - especially with omelettes!

Jeff - I'm itchin' to see the coaling tower once you've weathered the rafters.  Maybe it'll look like one of Grande Man's Birmingham Industrial History photos.

Ferg - got your email, thanks!

Mitch - Nice looking Charger, hope it sells quickly at a good price! I had the Plymouth counterpart - a RoadRunner (1971) - during my days of irresponsible youth.  Got my share of tickets in that thing. (I'm the guy who was asking all the questions about the CL&W sub - remember?)

. . .

We had our first frost of the season here in the Free State this morning.  Sure was purty, but a real bear to scrape off my windshield!  I'm hoping the grass has finished growing so I can enjoy more time with mrr.  I got ~half of my engine terminal track ballasted yesterday.  I was actually pleased with how it turned out - maybe I'm starting to get the hang of this ballasting thing after all..?

Sad

Morning Tom,

We are sorry to hear about Lowell.  We thought you had that managed pretty well.

But I guess age and the ailment combined to speed up his demise.

We have lost many family pets over the years and it is always difficult and some are very difficult to adjust to.

Our sympathies.

Morning all, first time for me to appear in the new coffee shop, and I have to do it on a very sad note for me.

I had to have my furry train-cat buddy Lowell put to sleep--the kidney failure just went through his body too fast, and he was in agony.  Funny how you get attached to a pet--and all pets are special.  Lowell was certainly that.  But I had 13 years of a lot of companionship from him and I know he's in a better place now.  Spooky already misses her buddy, and so do I.

Here's a photo taken last year before the kidney failure started:

Morning, Zoe, just dragging in a bit later than Lee (and definitely than Bill T. - you said he was in before 4:30 this morning?Shock) Wow!! I'll have cup of coffee, glass of milk (2 percent, please) and some of that min-donut cereal, please. Thanks.Dinner

Hey Sue, we try to find ways to keep our Diners coming back, and besides, the NP could easily have boxcars down the way of my RR's Four Corners area in the 1950's (or so I'll claim, and I'm stickin' to it! Wink ) I like the gold stripes on my NP SW1200, so I decided I'll have only the NP logo painted over, as if the paint shop hasn't got to doing the repaint in CAW's colors. Good to hear (waiting on the glue to dry and all) that Larry and you are getting closer to the logging camp. Thumbs Up Oh, I did get that NP boxcar together last night (and KD's put on it), so it's sitting on the layout now.

Mitch, looks like several people will be coming by to visit your Mom, which hopefully will pick up her spirits a bit. Best wishes on your car sale, too. As for the sleep, hey, you're on vacation, and you can just say you're practicing early for being an ORF...Whistling

Paul, sounds like an enjoyable visit to that resort, and Bow for your self-restraint at breakfast. Guess hanging around us chowhound Diners hasn't completely rubbed off on you. Wink That resort sounds like a good one for MRR'ers, with all those layouts.

Lee, good job on that lumber yard - was that the Walthers 'Walton Bros.' one, or did you kitbash two of the Atlas and add the top part over the space between them? Careful, you'll have me starting through some of my older/beatup/worn rolling stock and trying to improve them. This could be catching! Smile,Wink, & Grin

Also yesterday, I had a few empty WS "silos" (containers) that I put my Arizona R&M scenery materials into (well, except for the Sedona Red powder - left that in its original bag). I may need to order some more AZ Rocks & Minerals stuff, though - one bag only gets about 1/3rd of the way filled.Oops Might put MRR money on my birthday list for daughter and brother, since it's coming up.

Sunny here today, though pretty cool this morning. About 40 F at the airport, which tends to be a couple or three degrees cooler than in the city. Supposed to reach the upper 60's/low 70's (F) this afternoon, but dropping into the upper 30's tonight. But no frost just yet Yeah!!!

Zoe, I'll be at the window booth if anyone else comes in.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

 Good morning.

It's 50 and clear. A little nippy for this part of the country but nothing I can't handle. The high today will be around 80 with plenty of sunshine.

I've got most of the rafters installed in the coaling station. Sometime today or tomorrow I'll be cutting the pieces of rusted roofing metal to scale 10 foot size and gluing them in position one piece at a time. In some places a piece will be loose or peeled back and some pieces will be missing altogether. This should lend one heck of an effect overall for the structure as it stands a lonely vigil beside an abandoned stretch of track.

This afternoon I have to go to DeRidder to see a urologist about my prostate condition. It shouldn't take long, a couple of hours at the most.

Good morning all,

Today: Partly sunny, with a high near 62. Southwest wind between 9 and 11 mph.

Tonight: Showers likely, mainly after midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 51. Southwest wind 9 to 17 mph becoming northwest. Chance of precipitation is 70%. New rainfall amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.

Mitch, it’s good to hear your mom is doing well (picking on you and giving you a hard time is a very “Mom” thing to do).  That is quite a story of perseverance and accomplishment .  One of my friends was in the CG, made Warrant Officer and was diagnosed with cancer.  His wife had lost her battle with cancer and he was sure to share her fate.  At the time he sold everything he owned (including his layout).  Now 20 years later he has beat the cancer and has a new home in the country and is unstoppable in his pursuits.  He volunteers at the local hospital and hospice encouraging those fighting the fight.

Sorry I’m behind on posts, been working on the layout stuff almost non-stop this weekend.  Most of my projects right now are resurrecting old “toy” TYCO, ROCO, Bachman, and COX rolling stock into period correct rolling stock. I have 2 card tables set up in my den; one is a work space and the other is the TODO table.  I’ve started another bone yard for old rolling stock that I’ve stolen parts from or decided they don’t fit in with my 1950’s period.  Once the TODO table is cleared and the dust settles I’ll post pictures of the bone yard and I’ll offer them to the Diner patrons free of charge, but this time I’ll accept help with shipping.  I will also update my DEPARTING TRACK picture album on my web site, stuff for sale or swap and offer them to the Diner Patrons maybe if I post a wish list some of you have stuff laying about in your bone yards I can use.

Evening Gang: The weekend at the Gaylord Texan was very nice. That place is huge. The atrium must cover 5 acres. They have 5 different G gauge train layouts, one was in the shape of a guitar. We had a really good breakfast this morning. Custom made omlets bacon, sausage, fruit, rolls, coffee, and orange juice. To top it off it was all you can eat. I did manage to control myself.

Robby those are really good looking trees. Tell you wife that she can do chain link fence for the whole crowd here. I likt the way it is kind of bent and used or damaged. That is a really great effect.

Ken it's good to see you back over on this side of the street. One of these days I'll go DCC also but first I need a layout that warrants it. I have three locomotives that have decorders and when I buy new ones I'm getting decorders in them.

Well it's getting late and I'm sore and tired.

Morgan, that Type 52 is different - are those cooling fans on the tender? You have my curiosity up, all right!Confused What's the story on that engine?

Actually, the story is that I was told wrong. The engine is in fact a Borsig, and possibly the largest Drawing Board loco never built. The fans are part of a Condenser. Steam was piped off the exhauset, run the length of the engine, and vented into the tender to be condensed back into water, since  liquid water is a better coolant than air is. The fans on top are cooling fans that further help the process. Teh Borsig was never built, but similar cooling tenders had an economy rating of 85% more water and 15% more coal efficent than a typical steam locomotive. I've alsop read them as being compared mechaically to the heat tiles on the space3 shuttle

Evening,

Went to the Sold Out “Boo at the Zoo” tonight with Dorothy.

Here is one of the projects I completed today; this is the lumber yard I bought at the train show for under $20.  I took it apart as much as possible, re-painted, and assembled and lettered it using my ALPS printer to make the water slide decals.

Jim, I’m still working on the (wood sided) refrigerator cars (7), I’m painting them with CSX yellow and it’s a very thin color.  I’m using the American Foundry colors with the LS&W logo under the “lease to” herald.  Dale is working on the same idea but he is doing 2 in the PFE orange leased to LS&W.

I’m a little miffed!  I assembled the Branchline P&LE box car kit today and the roof was missing!!!!!!!!  I’ll be calling LHS tomorrow.

Hey folks-I'm going to call it an early nite, so stopping in now for some quick java.

I have no idea why I'm hitting the sack early, since I'm taking some vacation time this week. But Dawn's already in bed, so I might poke around on the comp a bit then hit it. Actually I'm waiting to see if a fellow posts on my weathering forum about ID of a covered hopper I had got a proto pic of.

Cape Jim, the auction will run for a week, starting tonight at 10. I really hope I can get it sold as it'll take a lot of $$$ pressure off of me. My only wish is that it was a rare big block or Hemi car, but then again, I wouldn't have been able to afford to buy it in the 1st place in 1986, as that's when the prices on those started to skyrocket.

I couldn't resist sharing that pic-I was tempted to label them from L-R; Tony, Mitch, Rex. (2 guys I railfan with-Tony's just completing his conductor training with CSX right now at Willard & working yard jobs)

I went to see Mom a few hours ago-she's ok & in good spirits this evening. I think (at least I hope) that she's realizing that I'll do what I can to help her, & giving me a difficult time isn't going to help things.

I also talked to a friend of mine's daughter online last night, who's in her 1st year of college. I told her about my Mom, & said she's going to try to stop in & see her. Her dad & I grew up down the street from each other, & her mom is an employee where I work. Her dad was nearby when we were talking, & he's going to try to stop by here sometime this week, as I haven't seen him in a year or 2. Upon reflection, it's by God's grace that this young lady is talking to me, as she has had the odds stacked against her terribly healthwise at a young age. About the age of 5 or 6, it was found she had a rare & virulent form of cancer, which somehow to the doctors' amazement, she beat, & has been in remission ever since. & if that wasn't bad enough, she had other health problems, including a vision problem that's left her blind in 1 eye. But she's done well in school, learned to drive, & now is college, & her goal is to become a special ed/special needs teacher. Her reasoning for that is she feels she can relate to them with all the health & physical problems she's dealt with.  I give her a lot of respect & credit for that.

(finishes coffee) well I better hit it folks, Nite all!

Good afternoon, Diners.  I thought that I would stop by for one of Jim's famous RBF's.

Afternoon, Janie, Diners. I'll have a root beer float

Sue - Larry's about ready to finish up his trestle? Is that the one to the logging camp that you've been waiting on, or something new?

Jim,  He is getting closer, and yes, it  is to the logging camp.  He got the girders made and the bents to hold them.  Isn't that life?  Watching glue dry.  The next stage will be  to stain them, and glue them in place.

I spent the better part of the day working on my Walthers coaling tower.  I had started it is April when I was sick, and lost interest.  I am moving along again.  It is probably too detailed for someone's first kit.  But you know me, I realize that after it is too late.Sign - Oops

Later,  Sue

PS.  You knew that I would like the NP 40'.

Robby, great job on the trees, and that chainlink fence looks like it's been there a lonnnng while. Might want a touch of rust here and there, perhaps (knowing how you like the stuff...).Wink Oh, yeah, I like your gondola, too - may need to make one of mine that decrepit. Yeah!!

Killing frost warning this morning.  (I walked right up to the frost this morning and I’m still here).

Laugh
Lee, you're wearing me out, just reading all the stuff you did this weekend!Wow!! Any pics of all those cars (on WPF or in here?). Inquiring minds (who'd like some great ideas/inspiration, that is) and all that... Hope you did well on your auctions! Thumbs Up

And Mitch, hope your auction on the car does well, too - how long will yours be running for that? It's no easy road when health problems (or memory, or not being able to make oneself understood, etc.) start up. Hang in there, and know that you're doing what you can (as you've told your Mom). Funny pic with your monkeys - hey, who says animals can't be railfans, anyway?Evil

Garry, our AngelAngel for the mother and other family members (not in the house at the time). I'd think life in prison wouldn't be quite fair enough for that guy. But that's just my My 2 cents

Jeff, love what you're doing with that coaling tower - the aluminum roof is coming along nicely, and I like the rafters, too. Bow

Morgan, that Type 52 is different - are those cooling fans on the tender? You have my curiosity up, all right!Confused What's the story on that engine?

Sue - Larry's about ready to finish up his trestle? Is that the one to the logging camp that you've been waiting on, or something new?

LUPO! Good to see you again! What've you been up to lately (or since last time through the Diner)?

(For those newer to the DIner, Lupo was known for having probably the *best* collection of gifs and images used in the Diner. He also did pretty well at the Diner 'celebrations', but didn't get in as much trouble as some of the rest of us...)

C&O 2-6-6-6, your photo didn't show up - guess the forum gremlins got it. Wanna try again?

Went to put the spade terminals on my buss lines for the layout earlier this afternoon, but they're not big enough inside for the 12 gauge wire. Sigh I'll have to try to find some different terminals for the wire this week, or else go to 14 gauge wire (which might fit into the terminals). Rats, foiled again!

Time for me to head for home. I'd like to work on a structure, since the wiring got the best of me for today. Want something for my MRR'ing time this weekend. Well, I did get a Roundhouse AAR 40' boxcar (NP, Sue Smile,Wink, & Grin) at the LHS on Saturday for under 8 bucks. It looks pretty good, but too clean right now for my tastes.

Blessings on your evening (and a warm spot to sleep),

Hello sports fans,

Flo, I'll have a carafe of plain black coffee to go. Only have time for a quick post-n-run, I'm in the process of ballasting the track in my engine terminal; not terribly difficult, just S-L-O-W and tedious.  Now I can see why Loathar always says how much he hates ballasting!
