Evening Gang: I bought the page yesterday and didn't even know it. No wonder that Vinnie was giving me the look when I walked in.

Rob thanks for the look at the Zebu's. I guess they are minature bramas.

I got some paint on the two gons today. The toughest part was getting the floor in the second one so I could drill the mounting holes. I had to use the grinder to shave down the width so it woild fit. Let me tell you that car is heave with the floor in it. I put a coat of the red primer on the two floors tops and got some on the gons bottoms. Tomorrow if the weather will warm up a bit I'll shoot the bottoms of the floors and finnish the bottoms of the gons.

Well the diner was on Page two when I came in. I'll check out and settle up with Vinnie and hit the sack.

Good Night All

I've got my two switchers converted to DCC, no easy task considering they were straight DC before. The two will be lashed up together with the headlight of the lead unit on full time in forward and flashing in reverse. The cablight on the trailing unit will on steady in reverse and flashing in forward. You gotta think about that for a second to get it straight. They're both hardwired with DZ125's so there were no space issues. It was a bit of speed matching an Athearn and a Proto 2000. The Athearn was way faster. I've got them pretty close now though. The Athearn is set on the switcher speed table and the Proto is flat out on the main line speed table. And that's with the decoder wired straight to the motor, no resistors anywhere.

Bump!  Pg2 again - must be a slow day. At least they gave you a range of times Jeff. My oldest son just moved into his first house and while the electric company shut the electricity off the day before they were due to (necessitating a stay last night with friends), they were only able to give a vague "sometime today" schedule to reconnect.  Back to my paperwork.   J.R.

I'm still waiting on the [pick your expletive] cable tech to show up. I have two switchers (Athearn SW1000, P2K SW1200) that I want to convert to DCC today but I don't want to start something only to have it interrupted. Hopefully they'll get this danged cable problem sorted out soon.

 Good morning.

It's 57 and clear. The high should be around 80 and it will be partly cloudy with a good chance of rain tonight.

Cut the grass yesterday then fixed the outside doorknob on the trailer next door. It just needed a simple lube job. The inner workings were so dry it was all stuck together. I then came home and worked on getting lights into a few more structures. No further progress to report on the coaling station. I still have to cut up the roofing metal. I'm expecting a cable technician to show up today to find out what's up with the wild upload speeds out here. Yesterday my upload speed was 2. It should be over 500. I double checked it on my mother's computer (almost a 1/4 mile from here) and it's doing the same thing. My neighbor was also complaining about slow speeds. That tells me it's not my system doing it but rather some of SuddenLink's equipment. Maybe one of these days they'll find the problem. This has been an issue for about a year now. Things slow down, a tech comes out and works on some of the booster boxes and fixes the problem and everything runs fine for two or three weeks then it starts all over again.

Good Morning All,

A bit warmer this morning at 43F but windy so no gain. I'll have a regular and a donut please Zoe. Not much accomplished last evening though I started on a mould for an O gage portal to use at the museum. I ordered a kit from Micro-Mark with all the release agent and silicone mix so we'll see how it goes. We plan a round house for the museum exhibit and will build it into a hillside to save space so we'll need nearly  a dozen portals in all. Should be a fun project.

With progress on the house we're spending more time watching the DIY channel for ideas on what to do with the heating and insulation systems. We'll end up with all the walls stripped to the studs so we have a lot of latitude on what to use. Right now we're leaning towards cellulose for the walls and attic. We have a cemented stone foundation so most likely we'll end up insulating the inside walls though I'd like to find a way to retrofit extruded styrofoam to the outside walls and then cover that. More research. Here's where some of our tax dollars have been helpful as the Govt has web sites with lots of useful information to wade through, Just google the subject and Bobs' your uncle (or in this case Sam)

Gotta go - lots to do in the shop today.           CUL, J.R.

Philip,  I thought that you had a 69 camero.  The 914 is way different than that.

You mean this beast?  http://i83.photobucket.com/albums/j319/pcarrell/C3.jpg  I got rid of it a while back.  Couldn't afford to feed the beast!  When I was younger I had a few smaller cars (a Fiat 850 Sport Spyder among others) that were a lot of fun.  Those were mixed in with a healthy dose of muscle cars mind you (Trans Ams, Cudas, Demons, Mustangs, Challengers, Cougars, etc.).  These days my 70 Chevelle SS 396 is gone, as is the 68 Camero SS, and my ground stomping Mopar days are behind me as well.  I considered going with a more modern car, like a newer mustang or the camero / firebird twins, but to me they just don't have the soul of those older cars.  I figured I'd give those old sports cars another whirl!

Never hurts to have a housecat or two, either.

You don't want THIS cat!

The forum software is still acting a bit weird. I clicked on the little blue arrow that should have taken me to the end of the 'Trackside Photos From the Forum' thread and instead I find myself at the end of another thread looking at a photo of a horse with it's head stuck in a tree. That took me totally by surprise.

Evening all--

Had a pretty full day today.  Had to pick Lowell up at the vets, then a good friend of mine who works part time at a large funeral parlor here in town--they also have a pet cemetery--phoned and told me to bring Lowell down there, they'd cremate him and put him in a little oak box and I could have the ashes to do with what I want, all Gratis.  Seems that little furry buddy of mine made everyone that met him fall in love with him.

Okay, people are just darned NICE!!

Found the Silver Streak caboose, it's going to need a little re-furbushing (I've had it since the sixties, remember, LOL!) and new trucks and wheels, plus a few wire details (stack supports, brake system) and a repainting (haven't decided on which color, but I'm going towards standard Rio Grande steam-era oxide-reddish brown) and some decals or dry-transfers that don't look like the usual Railroad Roman for his name.  I have a kinda/sorta idea, but I want to let it jell for a while.

Jim:  That portrait turned out just BEAUTIFUL!  Thanks so much.  I've never tried making my own decals, but I think I'll give it a whirl just because of the way you cropped it.

The rest of you--I can't thank you enough for your good thoughts--that's why I keep hanging around this forum--you people are so darned THOUGHTFUL!

And of course, I learn a lot about the hobby, too, LOL!

Well, back to the kitchen table--I have a nice little Key Rio Grande Northern that has decided to suddenly get a hitch in its 'git-along'.  Ah, brass!  Brings out the Tinkerer in ALL of us.Tongue

Best to all and God Bless

***Jim, tomorrow & the following day, the folks "we hired" will be out to do 2" spray foam. If you're curious: http://www.wattsaverinsulation.com/spray_foam/spray_foam.aspx

My studio is spray foamed with basically the same stuff, but an earlier version (from a different "foamer"), plus I added fiberglass insulation over it. This time, I am only going to add fiberglass insulation in the floor (above the train room) and in the interior walls of the master bedroom/bath/closet/etc. ...and I am wearing a mask!

BTW, these guys told me we didn't need a 2-ton ac/heat unit for this space with their insulation. Guess we have overkill on that one. Could have saved some money, gosh darn-it.

Our young miniature zebu bull has finally discovered his "ROAR". He has been practising all day.Laugh

That's it from the ol' farm. Have a good night all. Cowboy Rob

PC - the 914 2.0 was my favorite when I worked for the dealership. Except for the 2.0 911S there wasn't anything more fun to drive on a winding road.

A 2.0 is what I'm interested in.  I've done quite a lot of homework on them.  Thanks for the tips though.  Good stuff!

Evening Gang:

Jim I tried the cats. For a year after that I was still getting fur out of the running gear of my steam locomotives. I filled up the shop vac several times sucking up the stuff also. Oh and after that I still had to use traps. This time there is one that chewed through a control wire on the powder rooms low voltage light control. I fised it with a jelly bean connector. So tonight he did it again and took the jelly bean. Since he has now set a time for his antics I'm thinking about setting and waiting for him with my .17 HMR. Just one shot should do it. Of course I'd probably get him and some wiring also. I'll try some sticky traps instead.

Well this afternoon everything worked as it is supposed to on posting. Tonight it's back to running off the right margin and heading for who knows where. At least when I post it comes out right.

I got the floor for one of the gons done and have only to drill the holes for the bolts on the second one. These gons are 6 footers. I also have two 5 footers to do along with three 5 foot flat cars. tomorrow if the rain isn't bad I'll try and get the two gons and one of the flats painted. I moved everything into the tractor shed so it's out of the weather. We do need the rain through.

Well I'm going to hit the showers and get some of this blasting grit out of my hair.

Good Night All

Good Evening All,

The sandwich, chili and root beer look good - make that two orders please ladies. Worked through a bunch of stuff today so maybe New Jersey this weekend won't be so bad after all. Looks to be cold though. The new track is called Thunderbolt and it's in Millville south of Atlantic City. Should be the last hurrah for our vintage racing season.

Can't do anything with it just yet, but I did order up a Turbo train from my not too local hobby shop this afternoon. Good pricing from my bud and still no New Haven HH600 but they should be near. Rapido also announced the Osgood Bradley lightweight coaches (nee American Flyer) so I need to figure out how many of them to order as well. Guess I have a thing for passenger trains, no? The AF's should look the bees knees hooked on behind my I-5 loco.

PC - the 914 2.0 was my favorite when I worked for the dealership. Except for the 2.0 911S there wasn't anything more fun to drive on a winding road. The 1.7 has problamatic fuel injection and the 1.8 can be quirky as well with O-rings on the oil filler breaking and stopping the car (loses intake pressure and closes the flapper on the inlet poteniometer). also the air flow meters used to warp and bind especially on long trips and the result was much like a stuck throttle but not as drastic. Also the rear brakes were prone to corroding making it impossible to reset the parking brake. The latter is easy to fix if you antisieze the adjustor screws before they sieze (just like the VW 411 they took the parts off). When you do find one, check carefully for rust especially around the battery box. The pedal cluster can be a pain if the bushings go, but the fix is cheap if time consuming.  If you have a sense of humor you'll be fine and they are much more reliable than the Brit stuff I prefer. As you said, all the parts are still available new or from the "recycler".    Gotta run, the boss says dinner is served soon so I can just make it home before it's ready.     CUL, J.R.

Fergie, yeah, a Porsche 914.  Two seater (just to put back and forth to work and maybe go for a Sunday drive with the wife), a slightly warmed over VW Type IV motor with a five speed, and carves corners like it's an oversized go-cart so it's not too boring.  Add to that, they're dirt cheap, insurance is cheap, parts are everywhere, you can work on it at home without a computer, and it's going up in value every year instead of down and you've got a real winner there.  It suits me for a daily commuter.

Tom, sent you an email ('What I Had Done') via 'regular' email (not through the forum), so hopefully that'll go through. By the way, looking forward to seeing how your LMC (Lowell Memorial Caboose) looks when you get it all done.

JR, feel free to drop in the Diner during your 'off-season', so to speak. Why should we  be the only ones allowed to come in the Diner and ramble on? Heck, come join us! Smile,Wink, & Grin Was it a pretty good racing season for you?

Rob, how're your contractors doing? Sounds like you and JR are almost single-handedly saving the construction housing and repair fields lately. Wink Hope that both of you get things done and back into your 'new' homes ASAP.Yeah!!

Paul, this is the time of year for checking on any cracks, knotholes or crannies where the li'l varmits are trying to sneak in. Never hurts to have a housecat or two, either.

I'll settle into the corner booth for a while and finish my lunch. Dinner Everyone take care of yourselves!

***CN Charlie, my condolences for the loss of Jamie.

***JR, sounds like a good outing at the races. Congrats!

***Garry, that "My Old Kentucky Dinner Train" is the most realistic train & layout I have ever seen.Wink Seriously though, that looks like a lot of fun.

Good afternoon crew,

I was amazed to see that my region [Mid Atlantic] is now under a Fire Weather Watch - it seems like just a week ago we had some pretty heavy rains, go figure!  In any event it's mighty windy here now.

Paul - bummer about the rodent problem, hope you get that under control soon.  My trainroom seems to attract crickets, but something in there seems to be killing them - I only see their dead carcasses lying near the door...

Jeff - I positively loathe doctor visits! My doctor himself is OK, but the practice management always over-schedules patients, so whenever I have a routine appointment I end up waiting up to ~90mins before I actually see the doc.  For that reason I always schedule my appointment for the earliest time slot on a given day, before the "emergency" walk-ins start showing up.

Fergmiester
Ken, ... How's that layourt of yours? ...

Funny you should ask, Fergie!  One of the local mrr celebs in my area caught wind of my layout, and says he'll recruit a small crew of guest operators from the Four County S.M.E., as soon as I get a few more radio throttles to accommodate them. [They all use NCE and I'm on Digitrax, otherwise they could bring their own.] Now I'm both excited and terrified, scrambling to get the trainroom looking semi-presentable.  Other than that, I'm putting the finishing touches on a diesel servicing facility - scratchbuilding some Snyder fuel cranes to go on the fueling platform.  So you're still dealing with the curve-widening issue, eh? I remember when you posted about that several months ago. [I'll need to build a helix to alleviate my most pressing layout deficiency, and I'm definitely not ready to go there just yet!]

Paul,

I use a 5 gallon plastic bucket with about 3” of peanut oil in the bottom.  The rodents climb the bucket fall into the oil then they can’t get out because their paws are covered in oil (peanut oil has a very strong smell) leave the bucket outside or in your garage.  I use a similar method for grubs; empty tuna cans filled with beer buried under a little bit of wood chips.  No grubs = No skunks. Lee
