Good Night I thought that I would stop in for a hot cider before heading to bed.

Jim,  Things seem to be working fine today.

Dick,  Larry lifts weights at least 3 times per week to help prevent that.  When we cut wood, we limit ourselves to one tank of gas in each of our saws, so we are only out there a couple of hours at the most.  It is easier to go out if it doesn't kill the whole  day.  Since it is our place, we can leave the split wood where it lies if we are lazy.

Dick, I also welcome harsh weather as an excuse to stay indoors - except when it knocks out my electrical power for 4 hours like it did on Tuesday!

KEN: I don't worry about power outages anymore either. After Y2K scare, the generator market was flooded with unsold equipment at bargain basement prices. I picked up a 13.5K generator that runs on either gas or propane. We have used it several times already.

JIM: Please do send some warmer weather, it is a little early for mid December temps, our blood is still thin from summer yet.

SUE: Yup, I remember those days of splitting cords of wood with a wedge and splitting maul. I did that until I was about 42, then I started developing elbow troubles with pain that lasted for months. You can't keep swing 10# head of steel at the end of a 3 foot shaft for ever without causing serious damage to the tendons in your arm. I hope your husband is more fortunate than I.

Time to hit the sack

Evening Gang: I'm happy to hear that I am no longer the only one having time out problems. It doesn't happen all the time but once in a while. I think that it may be connected to using Internet Exployer 8. I down loaded it when the forum was up dated. I think that it was recommended in the notice that the forum was being up dated. Anyway the altest word I have seen is to go back to IE7 and delete IE8. I'll do that as soon as I figure out how or get my buddy the computer guy to come out and help. I may have to get a brick of .22 long rifle or two. That usually works.

I got the first flat car lettered today. I had to get several vinal lettering sets to get the job done. I also got the two 55ft gons almost lettered. I'll have to get some more 1/4in lettering sets to get enough numbers though. They give you dozens of letters but only 2 of each number 0-9. I'll try and get a total number set if they make such a thing.

Right now my shoulders are aching from leaning over the work bench laying out the lettering for the cars. It would be nice if someone made decals in this scale.

Duke I have heard that Michigan got nasty on the boiler inspections. There were a couple of articles in the Live Steam magazine a couple of years ago. From what I have heard one person started the whole thing out of spite. There was a guy down here that tried to get the state to get involved. Fortunately common sence prevailed and the state boiler code exempts model boilers.

Well I think that I'll hit the sack.

Good Night All

Good evening folks, and for the many kind words on the crane progress. I’ve now added a few details to the buildings that sit on top of the boom, vents and such, and will put the doors and windows on as appliqués once the final painting’s done. No mrr today, as I’ve been away. BTW, and I hope it’s safe for all the kids in your neighbourhoods. …well, it ought to be, Halloween or not, and that means…..but I think this weekend is also the one where we put back the clocks. …or for the aeronautically minded among us,

(Different for you Gav, and maybe different for the US.) I haven’t seen much about this on TV, we don’t listen to much radio, and don’t get the paper any more as it got just too biased for our tastes.

I’ll try to reply to more specifics sometime over the weekend, but have a paper to write and email off first. However, CapeJim, you asked for research help on your era.  You may remember that the Coffee Shop answer man was Ed, and I’m sure he’d be more than willing, and way more qualified to suggest sites to browse Bow

Fergie, glad to hear Bob got back to you. I don’t envy  him those hours either.

Goodnight all, and God Bless. Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel

Evenin' everyone!

Figured I ought to at least make an appearance, not much time for chitchat since I've been busier than <<insert your favorite hillbilly expression here>> for the past week.  Both at work, and in the trainroom.

Jim, I always know exactly where my tools and materials are - except at the moment I actually need to use them, then they mysteriously disappear.

Dick, I also welcome harsh weather as an excuse to stay indoors - except when it knocks out my electrical power for 4 hours like it did on Tuesday!

Fergie - poor Molly looks so sad! Hope she gets used to the weenie dog like you're saying...

derJohn nice job on that container crane!

Lee - I see you live near Cleveland.  That's the area I'm trying to model, might have a few brain-pickin' questions for you sometime soon...

Duke your roundhouse is lookin' good!  I see that Jeff, Sue and Jerry are also working on structures.  I wish I could say the same, that's probably my favorite part of railroading.  But I've been mostly doing cleanup and repair.  Amazing how you never notice how far away from perfect your layout is until you start preparing for guest operators, then all the blemishes hit you like an avalanche!  Gets a bit stressful at times.  But I've set a goal to start doing op sessions, no sense putting so much effort into a layout just to keep it hidden.  I'm heading over to M B Klein's on Saturday to pick up a pair of extra UT-4R radio throttles - that should clear the final hurdle to hosting.

I'll say goodnight now, I'm running on a sleep deficit.

Evening, Diners - Chloe, how about a nice cup of hot cocoa, please? Thanks! Might need another cup, at the rate these Diners are posting in here. Shock Best to catch up, for now, anyway.

sleeper33

Dang

you tryin' to loose this Brit?

lookin all over for this place. Oh well while I'm here I'll have a tea please.

Gav, we figured that with a good Brit foxhound, you'd track us down here. Wink Welcome to the new digs, and have a cup on me.

Sue, I was having problems with the forum servers timing out on me yesterday evening also. I sent them an email and today sent them particulars on my browser, connection, etc. so their alpha geeks can track things down to fix them, hopefully.

Jeff, I got off early today from w**k and got my flu shot as well. I also got a copy of my birth certificate, as Missouri (ever vigilant about those nasty terrorists, I suppose) now requires both a photo ID and a copy of your birth certificate to renew your driver's license (or at least, this first time around - I sure hope they don't make me do it every time from now on...). I found out that the state license bureau had trouble reading my Mom's handwriting on the original certificate; they had her middle initial as 'P' (it's B). So I don't think this will be a deal-killer for renewing my driver's license, but I did suggest to the county health center that they send an email to the state bureau to notify them that they have it wrong.

Terry, thanks for the suggestion & info - my book that I checked didn't get that technical. Besides, I was just looking to be sure what range of wire gauge I could use (and possibly just be able to use the terminal and connectors I already have, and that fit each other). I did find myself wondering today, "WHY did I get 12 gauge wire for my buss wires" (when the book says - for my runs - to allow 14 or even 16 gauge)? I suspect that it may have read that way in the Jerome & Southwestern RR book that I have (both copies... guess who couldn't find his copy and thought it was gone, only to turn up after buying another copy on the 'Bay?)Banged Head About 20 years ago, I was going to build that layout (and industrial yard extension), so the first bunch of plywood and 2 X 4's that I used for building my current sections came from the wood I bought for the J&SW.

Jerry, good job on the building - but I must be used to rust and grime; it looks too clean to me. Might want a little dirt or rust on that roof, y'think? Smile,Wink, & Grin That Saw Pit Store (from what I recall of the kit) is a nice one. Yeah!! Now you have me thinking I should start on my laser kit; I have the KingMill kit of the Nella Country Store, which is supposed to be easier than a lot of laser kits. I also have a Preiser lazy dog for the front porch, too. Zzz

Rob, we got some warmer weather today, too (after what I'd call "dew frost" on the front & rear windshields on the car this morning). I saw one bank thermometer that read 73 (F) this afternoon, which was about 5 degrees warmer than the prediction for the high temp. It was nice out. Cool

Hey, Colby, good pics - but I suspect that first one might be more in 1:1 scale, right?

Dick, I'll try to send along some of our weather to you by the weekend to thaw you out a little.

About that time to head for home again. See you all in the morning! Angel Angel Angel for those with ailing backs/legs/arms and those in need of healing and comfort.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Dick,  I know a couple hours of chain saw work and my back screams.  My log splitter is 6'2" and weighs 220, and that is all muscle.

Mark,  I know, I have a free pass.  We are celebrating Thanksgiving at my brother's that day. I am not sure that we will make it.

It's not quite dinner yet... Maybe some onion rings and coke.

Found a new model club I might join, the Tacoma Northern. It is a 40-70 minute drive, but my sister's reptile club is farther away.

Sue: Just in case you didn't know, the TTE show in puyallup is on the 16th and 17th. They are also going to have Trains, Trains, and More Trains again on April 25th-26th.

Duce

Morning guys,

GREYFOX Sorry about the snow. Its way to early to be throwing around the "S" word.

Hope you guys have a wonderful day. I have to go help my uncle with his layout. Ill talk to you guys later

CARY: We have had snow, up to 10" as early as October 10th, but that was back in 1970's and only happens about every 50 years that early here in central MA. Usually we get our first measureable snows in early November. I actually like the snow because it forces me to stay inside mostly, and work on MRR'g. I love the change of seasons here, never boring. In summer, 1 hour ride to the ocean and 72F water on south facing Cape Cod. Or in the Fall, gorgeous colors anywhere in New England especially the mountains of the three northern states and the Berkshires of CT and MA.

Dick,  Are you buying?  Out here it is 9:30, but I could be persuaded to take an early lunch.  I have been working outside and needed a little break.  If you run  out of repairs, I could find a few for you.Laugh

Jerry,  Ah,  a photo.  Laser kits can be fun.Thumbs Up

Sue

SUE, not I, I missed the TOP by 2 nanoseconds, but, I will buy you a lunch anyways. As for repairs, sure , send them by, the rest and relaxation will do me good. I have lifting 32" diameter X 18" long Maple logs up onto my log splitter ( about 16" height lift ) for 2 hours and I am plum tuckered out with sore lower back. You see Fergie & Co. keeps sending this cold Canadian air down south of the border.

FERGIE: Ok, we know that you get all your info from Lisa regarding Climate, weather facts etc., your a sailor not a weatherman. LOLWink

Good Afternoon All!

Hard typing here as "someone" is sitting in my lap! Molly seems to have adjusted with the new addition...

We think anyway

Terry: Must be that "Darn Yankee" weather... No sirree! That's a good old Canadian Cold Front!  Sorry Dick see we nailed you as well! Repeat after me... "G-l-o-b-a-l C-l-i-m-a-t-e C-h-a-n-g-e" it's not getting hotter it's getting more extreme!

Anyway been a couple of busy days here but I got a bit more work done on the MESS plumbing project.

Der John: Good talking to you and guess who called last night!?! Yeppers, Bob. seems his phone was acting up and he didn't know about it. He's got a new job and working between 12 and 17 hours a day. I don't envy him one bit.

Ed: I found the picks of 900 in Pippy park before the makeover unfortunately I am unable to download onto Railimages today

Anyway time to run

later All

Hello again...

If anyone is interested there is a video about California's proposed high speed rail line connecting Los Angeles with San Francisco. It's a link on the home page of http://www.marketwatch.com/  .

I don't know how long they will have the link on the home page. Perhaps, the project would get more votes if the proposal called for SP Daylight colors instead of blue and yellow.

***Jeffrey, just saw what you did with that coaling tower. Nice!

Thanks. That wasn't as easy a build as I thought it was going to be. The hardest part was cutting the rafters from craft sticks.

Good morning.

Sue, I can tell you second hand. Both JR and Rob had house fires. Rob's house burned to the ground. Firemen put out

JR's fire which was upstairs. Water damage to JR's basement was significant. It's my undertsnading that much of JR's layout is salvageable. JR lost his lifetime collection of plastic model cars that were in the attic. JR's house is being rebuilt, and I look forward to seeing his fabulous city scens poste again.

Rob is getting a new house altogether. He will have a dedecated layout room. I'm looking forward to seeing his new layout posted soem day.

They can tell you more.

Meanwhile I'll have black coffee and a pecan roll.

Sue,  We had a house fire Memorial weekend that took out my sons room and smoke damage that necessitated gutting the entire second floor. They took so long getting their act together that the contractors didn't get started until late August. When the remnants of hurricane Hanna came through in early September, they had the roof ripped off and  just the roof joists in place with a tarp over the joists and a second set of tarps on the second story floor. needless to say the tarp failed and the secondary tarps let most of the 6" of rain through to destroy the first floor kitchen, walls and the trainroom below the kitchen. I now get to rip out the rest of the house and start over including the entire finished area of the basement where my hobby bench was and the train room which had enough water to take down much of the ceiling tiles. Other than that, not much has gone on this summer.  That which doesn't kill us makes us stronger.       cheers, J.R.

Good Morning All,

Just above freezing but dry here. Overcast skies but hopefully the sun that does get through will heat things up a bit. I'll have a regular and a cheese danish please Zoe. Still working on the basement clearout. I now have all the boxes of projects moved out and all the buildings boxed up and off the layout. So far I've lost the Laserkit wooden depot, a house, and the barn to mold/damage. The factories will survive as they weren't hit directly by the falling ceiling tiles, but the row houses on "Railroad Ave" are mostly ruined. They will require total rebuilds as the roofs got soaked and then flattened by the soaked tiles. It's discouraging, but it will all come back better than ever once the house is fixed.

Well, gotta run todays project is building a new rear axel for a Lotus 7 out one from an MG Midget. No problem - just cut the brackets off and start over.  CUL, J.R.
