Garry:

I hope "Rosie" does OK at the vet.
..Glad to say, and Praise the Lord, Yes.  she is in very good shape for her age (about98 in people years), and the lump(s...she has two) are beign fatty lymphomas.  They can stay where they are unless they get to be too big and a bother. Removal is a simple op., slit the skin and sqeeze them out like hard boiled eggs!

Thanks again for all the kind remarks about the container crane. The Liquisilk was the wrong glue, it hasn't really worked with the styrene. In any case, I'm having to modify those trucks and have taken them off. I built in too much play in the wheels (too wide a spacer between the side frames) thinking I'd need it for any out of gauge (45' gauge!) track. However, they won't stay on the tracks as they are, so I've glued thin (001") strips behind the wheels so they can't slide back so far. This time I'm using clear silicone caulk as the glue. It's gap-filling, and will end up as a flexible joint, which may absorb some abuse, should the thing get jarred. I may have trouble with painting, but nothing a little dull coat won't cover, I hope.

Lee: I hope I can get some N stairs at the train show this Saturday. Once the boom is fixed in place, the next major part is stairs and railings. On the weather, a year ago tomorrow (11th.) Nova Scotia had about 10 inches of snow.  That wasn't welcomed by the Remembrance Day Ceremonies organizers!

Jerry: That  FA is a sharp looking loco.Thumbs Up

Sue:  Let me try and finish what Jerry started...

sue...Larry's
Tressle is really great! Thanks for the photo ClownWhistling

Paul:

Have you got lots of containers for it to handle?
...We're getting there, especially if I don't ever model the ship!Captain
I still think that the dock face needs some tires hanging on it.
...As you say, but tires cost $s, even in N!  I had the white plastic things on hand, and my story is that the Harbour Grace Port Authority takes such good care of it's client lines that it doesn't want to mark up the hulls of the ships with the black that rubs off tires.Clown  That's not as totally crazy as it sounds, because I'm told the cruise ship industry for instance, is very down on docks that mark up their little beauties!  Hope the  tornado watch proves to be un-necessary.

Evening Gang: I had to go to word to try and get this reply done. I don’t know what is going on with the forum or if it’s my computer but making a reply really got some strange things going on. The right margin disappeared again, no surprise. Then the letters I was typing suddenly started appearing in the search box of Yahoo. After that the cursor would not go where it needed to be and I couldn’t get any thing to work right. Anyway here I am.

We got a bunch of rain here. For a bit it really came down. It let up just long enough for us to get the cows out of the pasture. That got me soaked. Anyway it started raining hard again after we got inside. It sure sounded nice.

Well I’m going to hit the sack.

Good Night All

Paul, oh no the lake trade and the railroads haven’t seen this much action since the 1950’s. The only thing slowing down is the Automotive Industry.  Coal and Taconite are still kings, but titanium and rolled steel are tied for 3rd and the salt trade is booming. So are the road improvement materials.  Semi precious metals are still brought in to Canada from the Seaway until December 15th or so.

My question is where are all these auto racks going?  I see them everyday going up and down the mains but they are all empty.

Robby send me an email.  I just bought 3 data only hopper kits and four 40’ boxcar kits, Accurail new in the box, never opened all 7 with shipping for $50.  This guy has Y6’s for $125 in the original box.  I bet he would give you a good deal on a diesel locomotive.

Ok, time to get to work, I have one more train box to sort through.

Hello ....

Robby ...keep us informed about the b'day engine.

Vincent...the BN plow train is impressive.  Looks like BN repainted it over the summer and it's ready to attack big snow drifts this winter. No global warming in the Cascades!

Lee ... Well, maybe Vincent's plow needs to be divert to your area. I like Jeff's wether better than yours!

Jeff ... Sorry to learn about the foot infection. It's good you have docs who know what to do.

Paul ... I hope you get rain without any tornadoes.

PPC ... that's some transportation there!

Happy Model Railroading.

Lets see...................how about some hot cocoa and a pecan pie.  Yes the pie!!!

Um, 7 inches?  All we had here below Pittsburgh was a dusting.  I am hoping for a nice snow this year.

Jeff sorry about the news.  I don't like doctors, and I just don't like going to them either.  Even more when the family doctor in NC couldn't help my grandmother when she ws sick and see her slowly passing away each day.   I just don't like them.  They seem to always have bad news.

On the other hand.  I am currently looking for a new engine for my b-day.  I asked how much can I spend.  Probably around $125-$150.  I didn't wanna spend that much and maybe just get a Athearn and add some detail parts for around $100.  Who knows what I will end up with, but I will put a pic up of it.

Have a good night guys and gals.  Thank goodness I;m off tomorrow.

The visit to the foot doc didn't go quite as well as I'd hoped. Seems there's an infection trying to take hold so he has me on antibiotics for it for a couple of weeks. That ought to nip it in the bud.

Afternoon Gang:

Der that is a really great looking crane. Have you got lots of containers for it to handle? I still think that the dock face needs some tires hanging on it.

Sue give larry my compliments on the bridge.

Lee I'm sorry to hear about you loosing Nikia. It's hard I know from experiance. I hear that some of the boats are laying up early. The cargos have dried up. It was getting to look like a pretty good year too.

I moved the flat car into the shop to put the deck on. It's the black one. When I get the deck on I'll letter it also before I get the yellow one in. Right now we are under a tornado watch. It's thundering in the west and the radar showed thunder storms heading this way. I hope that they get here it's so dry.

Well I should get back to the shop and finish up on the decking on the black flat car.

See you all later.

Well I got a picture from someone who took pictures at the MR club's open house.

There were a few pictures with my equipment in it, but most of them were of my GP9s parked between a PRR PA ABBA set and an C&O Allhegheny.

Vincent

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

Well, I took the plunge!

I bought a 2001 Drifter 1500 this weekend.
She's got almost 19,000 miles on her, but only 200 in the last 4 years.  It came with a solo and a two up seat, Vance & Hines pipes, Kuryakyn grips, saddle bags, windshield, and shop manual.  It was painted not long ago (black), but it has a couple of light scuffs.  I think I can buff those out though.

I figure I can use this winter to buff out the paint, change all the fluids, check out the brake pads, you know, little stuff like that.

I snapped a pretty lousy pic of it this morning.  There's lots of shadows on the garage door behind it, and a few reflections of the overhead lights, but you get the idea.  I'll get some better shots soon.  Anyways, here she is!

BTW, der, HATS OFF!  Awesome modeling!

Good morning all,

Cold and snowing this morning, the snow hasn’t stuck to the ground yet this season, but it will cover the truck.

CN Charlie, Happy belated Birthday!

Jim, if you look at a chart of Lake Erie from Toledo to Buffalo the lake runs fairly straight and parallel  to the jet stream (west to east) and from Toledo to Cleveland the shore line is beaches.  Once you get east of Cleveland the lake turns NE and is mostly cliffs and the land is a higher elevation.  (the NYC - PRR manmade incline from Toledo to Cleveland is less than 1% but it starts in Walbridge, OH).  The Ohio “Primary snow belt” starts in Euclid due to the elevation change and NE track of the shoreline.

Not to mention all that warm humidity fed into Euclid, OH by Leesville, LA mixes with our cold air and really messes things up.

SUE, great work on the layout!

John, I forwarded some of your crane pictures to the local N-scale club, they are waiting with baited breath for your next set of pictures!

Hello everybody!

Der John...the container crane is looking fabulous!  I hope "Rosie" does OK at the vet.

Larry's trestle looks great. I noticed the hand laid track being installed. That's defiantely a first class trestle.

Hello, CN Charlie.  Top of the page, eh.  I'll have milk and cookies please. I'm easy. If Jim CG sees you at the top, look out.

I made progress on the layout this afternoon and evening.  Much of it is bench work for my layout extension. I made lots of sawdust in the woodworking shop. Now I have completed the supports for the track on my lower lever level loop. When done with the lowoer level track, I can bulid the upper level loop. Then both levels will connect to shelves I will build to theh right of the loops. The planned City of Heartland will be the main scenic feature for this section. I'm considering a streetcar line as part of it.

If you followed all of that, hats off to you.

A friend was telling me today that he wants to get a Bose stereo system, but it is too expensive. I said: "Not to worry. Without Bose, you will not need arrows."........... (I wonder why I keep losing friends.)

Happy Model Railorading!

Good Evening,

der, That is truly an amazing job you are doing on that crane and to think it's in N scale too! As for the restaurant name, it's named after the owner, Chef Bernard Mirlycourtois. He is actually just one day younger than myself. Anyway, he is from Burgundy, France where he learned his cooking skills. He came to Winnipeg about 20 years ago on a holiday as he heard the fishing was good. It must have been really good as he went home, packed up and moved here. Lucky us as he is truly an outstanding chef.

I'm taking tomorrow as a day of holidays so hopefully I'll get in some RR time.

Good night all,

CN Charlie

Good evening Diners:  I’ll have some ham and scalloped potatoes, a little squash and cauliflower please, with baked apple and ice-cream for dessert, with a JR Regular.  Thanks Luc!  BTW, Luc and Fergie, the Dartmouth Train Show is next Saturday / Sunday (15th./ 16th.)  I’m aiming for Saturday a.m., but the wallet will be light, definitely no brass in the forecast!

Did manage to get as far as finishing the trucks and attaching them to the crane main frame.  Had to used a slow drying glue (Liquisilk this time) because I had to reposition the trucks in relation to the track a fair bit to get everything aligned, then turn the frame upside down, which is how it is right now, in my vise, while the glue sets up. Worst case, they’re not aligned right, and I’ll have to re-do one or more.  Good thing it was slow dry too, as I discovered that in all my planning I had not taken into account the need to have the wheel flanges face the opposite way on the “other” track. Duh!  So, the far trucks now have the exposed ends of the wheel axels showing, but no biggie I hope, by the time the thing’s painted up. I don’t want to glue a cover over the ends to hide them for fear of glueing the axels in their holes!

So, no photos of that yet, but here’s something to be going on with. I had to “park” the boom somewhere, and it only lays flat upside down, so here’s a bizarre shot of the really, really strong cables they use on those cranes. Clown

Lee: Sorry to hear about Nekkia.  How are your kids doing? We’ve give our daughter and grandchildren as Heads Up that we have to take our 13+ rescue dog Rosie(lab + ??)  to the vet tomorrow.  We noticed an odd looking lump on her belly the other day.  We’re hoping it’s not cancer.

LUC, thank you for those pictures, Tuesday here in the States is a day of remembrance for all the veterans.
…Ditto on the thanks.  Same idea here too, but it’s called Remembrance Day, and is on Nov 11th. to recall the end of WWI at
11:00 a.m. on 11/11/1918  The veterans, through the Royal Canadian Legion, sell poppies prior to Remembrance Day as a fund raiser, usually assisted by the local Cadet Corps.

Terry:

I've always wanted to try something like that for a turn table bridge
…I think that that would work just fine. Are you in HO?, then the N wheels would do OK for the bridge, but Z if you need smaller.  I’ve got a jar full of N wheels if you need some, just let me know.
I have a hard time spray painting since my operation as I no longer breath through my nose I have no natural filter so the over spray goes straight to my lungs and I cough a lot
…Would a face mask help?  I used mine a lot this summer in the basement while I was at war with the ants and puffing diatomaceous earth around. I got it for the paint booth, but it’s useful all over. I also use it when I’ve got the table saw running in the basement. (Unfinished, and of course, no layout!!Big Smile )

Mike, Loved the underwear changing one!  Hope you can get the motor you’re after. Great about Sallie. Thumbs Up Angel KenL:
derJohn - That crane is really starting to look exactly like one of the SeaGirt cranes in Baltimore Harbor, I see them whenever I drive past on I-95.
…Thanks! That’s really encouraging to know.  The “local” ones in
Halifax are too far from the road, and the road is a major no stopping route anyway, so I haven’t been able to get any photos of them.  The glue has now dried enough for a test fit, so here’s the latest views. (I’ll separate the photos so the Forum software doesn’t throw them together; and the page here into super-size, like it did overnight with the two I posted yesterday and then separated in Edit, they came back together on their own! In fact any time I go back tothat page, the edit hasn't hed, despite my increasing the separation!Banged Head )

Ed:  the really scary thing about that tractor drive on the cable ferry is the total lack of guards on the drive pulleys and belts, and the apparent total openness of all that to the public!

CapeJim:

…On the dreaded Bay doubtless, but Lee wouldn’t like it!
DerJohn, your eyes must be way above normal, from all the work you've been doing on the crane and subassemblies
…Couldn’t do it without my trusty $Store 2.5 Reading Glasses, and an extra light on the workbench.Blindfold

CN Charlie:  Sorry to have missed your Bd.  That’s an unusual name for the restaurant you went to for the later celebration.  Our weather is supposed to chill down a bit tomorrow and into the week, but not as far as you’ve been already.

Well, it’s bedtime, so I’ll book mark where I’ve caught up to, and see you all later.  Goodnight and God Bless.  Prayers for all in need of healing, comfort and peace.Angel

Good Evening All,

Been out for a few days as I've been busy. Well, tis done. I have all my train stuff packed up and stored in the shed we built along with the layout. Much of the layout came apart ok and is hanging from the cross ties in the roof. Two of the larger pieces are laying sideways on the floor of the shed and part of it we ended up cutting off the benchwork so mere mortals could actually carry it. Used one of my old rip saws and hurrah for 2" foam board. Most of the upper levels were 1/4" luan bonded to 2" foam hung from angled shelf brackets and cut apart at the joints fairly easily. I had to pull out all the bridges (15 in all) and many of the cuts occured under the bridges. The bottom level was another story as much of it was recycled 3/4" plywood and OSB from previous layouts. What wasn't water damaged was too unweildy to move and now resides in the dumpster along with the basement walls and celings all of which had water damage or mold started. One thing that hurt was pitching the swing bridge as it had mold all the way up to the ballast. Much of the scenery didn't have any problems probably because I've usually mixed some Lysol into the water for thinning the glue or making the plaster covers. The wooden benchwork was more of a problem so when it goes back in I'll coat it all with urethane sealant - both sides of any new stuff. I'm impressed with the strength of the 1/4" luan glued to the styrofoam and will stick with that as well. Now to start negotiating for more space!!

Love the progress pics. The gas station is too cool. as is Larrys' bridge! Tom avoided temptation at the train show (I should ever be so lucky) so maybe a new feline companion would be a nice reward, no? And what can we say about Ders' crane build? Perhaps if they ask nicely he can loan the finished project to Canso or the Halifax marine terminal. Looks good enough to be real.

Well halftime for the Giants game which is my cue to turn into a tree and leave it's been a long day.    CUL, J.R.

Evening Gang: I finished the deck on the box car red flatcar. I was going to do the black flat next when I noticed the the primer was showing at a few places. So out comes the spray gun again and I gave it another coat. By then it was time to get the cattle out of the pasture. We are supposed to get some ran possibley by morning so I had to put everything under cover. I had to leave the black flat out because the paint was still wet and couldn't be handled.

Inch congrats on your going to be a great grand pa. I know that it is a bit early for your granddaughter but it can't be changed. I know that you will be a great great grand pa.

Tomorrow we are supposed to get some rain. I sure hope so since it is very dry.

I guess I'll head for bed.

GEEZ YA'LL, THE TOP OF PAGE 2?!?! WAKE UP!!! LOL, sorry, just had to do that. I'll take some water right now, my gut hurts from eating Dominoes Pizza (what's funny is one of my friends' dad owns the local franchise here, lol). Well, I've decided to build a small main-line diorama w/ some code 80 track and other stuff I've got, to see what I can do w/ my fall foliage. It'll have the mainline, a forest in back, and grassland in front, because there will be a road right in front (but just out of view of the track). There will also be a country road crossing (dirt road). I've got the track down, now need to paint it, apply the basic layer of ground cover, ballast, and find my dang road ruler so I can build the road. Till tommorow ya'll, I'll have that water to go, lol.

I thought that I would stop in for a quick coffee before I work out.  I helped a friend cut some boughs for Christmas swags.  Somehow one of the limbs managed to wack me in the face and draw blood.  I should have a nice bruise at work tomorrow.  That should be good for a few war stories.

Jerry,  Thanks for posting your standard oil photo.  I should get that kit before they discontinue it.

Jim,  With the backlog of kits that you have, you should never lack something to do.

Well tomorrow I gotta go see the foot doc again. I'll be glad to get that out of the way.

Afternoon, Flo, I'll have a bowl of chili, with cheese and some onion bits, please. Oh, sure, and a root beer float, too. Thanks!

Luc, thanks for the reminder on remembering. In church today, the pastor had all the veterans stand up, and I was kind of surprised there weren't more. It felt  a bit awkward, because I never had to go to 'Nam and all my service was in the continental US. Others had it much rougher than I did. My Dad didn't talk much about his service, but I do recall that he was in WWII in Germany and was in the Communications Corps (think he might have gone in on or soon after D-Day to set up lines for communications). So I feel like I got off with 'light duty'. I got out on Sept. 1, 1971 and started back in college about the next day.

Inch, even if she is too young, hope your Beth has a healthy great-grandbaby for you & Deb. Good to hear that they got it all out for Jamie. Thumbs Up Hope you find a suitable engine block for Deb's bus. I'm guessing the other stuff on the bus is still w**king okay, right? Good story there on the Gunny. And do you have cows there, or are you just getting up when the cows would?Wink

Jerry, sounds like you and Inch are having some colder weather than we have. I think we were supposed to reach 45 F (7 C) and dropping off to 26 F (-3 C?!!) tonight. Guess I might see some frost to scrape in the morning, maybe. Hope you get the chair seat changed or some other solution found. Getting those sores is not good, I hear.

Terry, best wishes on getting things all lined out for the train tour at your place. Good that you have friends to help with some of the things. From what I've heard, it's a lot of work even when a fella isn't tuckered out. Will look forward to seeing the pics (though they might be after the tour, since you'll likely be sorta busy between now and then).Yeah!! Good to have your own tech in house to manage your computer repairs.

Lee, do you still have snow on the ground? I always forget that your area can get some lake effect snow. I'm used to thinking of Pennsylvania or New York getting it, but don't think of Indiana and Ohio so much that way.

CN Charlie, sounds like an excellent birthday dinner. Big Smile I think I've only had veal a couple of times in my life, let along having veal cheeks. Hey, you get that Photobucket account - I'd love to see what kind of shape that GP9 is in, after fifty years of service (even with repairs)! Flo, could you bring me a ATSF mug and I'll help Charlie out with that coffee pot a little...

Diners? We might need some help here...Shock How about if Flo has the cook make up a batch of brownies to go with the coffee?

Pass me that coffee pot, please... Dinner

Hope everyone's been having a good weekend. I'll be heading for home in a bit, and resume hunting down that elusive grain bin kit. Prayers for those fighting colds and other stuff, and for a healthy week.

Blessings,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Good Afternoon Diners,

It seems like a quiet day so a pot of coffee in a back booth please Chloe.

Last night my wife took me out for my birthday dinner. My birthday was last Monday but we rarely celebrate on the day. We went to the restaurant, Mirlycourtois, where she helps out Thursdays. It was a really great meal! I had Coquille St. Jacques for starters and veal cheeks done in a wine reduction sauce for the main course. This is the only place where I've seen veal cheeks and they are really terrific so if you ever get a chance, do try them. My wife had fresh oysters which she does love.

I was talking to a local train expert at the LHS yesterday who told me that BNSF runs a high hood GP9 here that has been in Winnipeg since new (1958). I thought I was seeing things a few weeks ago when I saw it running on CN's line not far from here. It's operated by a short line in the city that originally belonged to NP & GN. One of these days I'll have to set up a Photobucket account and learn how to post pictures as I wouldn't be surprised if it is the only high hood Geep operated by BNSF.

Another cool day here, with a high of about 25F and cloudy.

Hope everyone is well today and please join me in the back booth as that pot of coffee is large!

Morning all !  I got the layout uncovered yesterday first time it's seen daylight since the storm

since i already had it covered it was a good time to ad clouds to the sky board so my friend art came over and sprayed some using stencils.

I have a hard time spray painting since my operation as I no longer breath through my nose I have no natural filter so the over spray goes straight to my lungs and I cough alot

I'm very pleased with the look and will try to get some photos posted when my son brings my computer back

Right now I'm using his lapto as a loner while he puts a new hard drive in mine

Hope every one enjoys thier Sunday
