Mornin' everyone!

Flo I'll have my usual dark roast in a Finger Lakes Scenic Railway mug along with a nice bowl of raisin bran.  Yep gotta get back on the old diet.

A gray cloudy day here in the Finger Lakes this morning.  32°F with a high around 38° this afternoon.

GMTRacing
Ray -- is the Finger Lakes Railroad the one that runs around Watkins Glen ? I saw evidence that the tracks up that way are being used again (polished rails - a dead giveaway) last year. Are there secic excursions or is it all just freight ? Inquiring (nosey) minds want to know.

J.R. yep, the FGLK runs to Watkins Glen on the old PRR tracks.  They service a salt mine down there.  They do many passenger excursions as well.  As a matter of fact this time of year there is something almost every weekend.  They are very people friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome.  You can find out more about the line here: Finger Lakes Scenic Railway

Philip sorry to take the last piece of pie on you, but I will be baking cookies next week for the baskets our Deacons take to shut-ins this time of year.  I'll save you some....Smile,Wink, & Grin

Have a great day!

Had a couple rolls left over from the feast and the last of the Pumpkin Pie (sorry Philip).

I can't believe you!

You'd better hide now, 'cause I'm gunnin' for ya!

OK, I'm just kidding!  I'd have nailed it myself if I'd have seen that!

Good Morning All,

Right at freezing again with the usual overcast this morning. At least it looks like the sun will poke through later. I'll have a coffee and a hard roll please Zoe.

Jeff - I hate it when I lose or break my glasses. Mine take a beating here in the shop so I try to keep a pair of driving glasses on hand so I can at least drive to the optomotrists and get more (I have varifocus photograys now so no Walmarts to help out).

Mark - there are a whole bunch of people out there who like to pick on smart people. If you learn to ignore it you'll be a lot better off in the long run and yes it's especially bad in middle and high school where you have to be face to face with immature peers. If it escalates to what you think is bullying then you need to get adults involved but if it's just the usual verbal nonsense, developing selective deafness is probably the best course (can help later when you're married too Whistling).

Well time to get back to it and pick up tools. Prayers for those healing and in need.     CUL, J.R.

Oh boy - top of the page and breakfast time as well! Guess I can hang for a bit while the girls run the card through the machine to start the tab.

 Good morning.

It's 52 and partly cloudy. The high is expected to be in the low 70's and there's a chance of thunderstorms this evening.

Having a bit of a problem focusing on this due to eye strain so I'm having to type it in a little a at time. No luck on finding the glasses yesterday so I'll probably be going to Wal-Mart today to find a cheap pair of reading glasses so that I can at least read the forums a bit better and maybe see to do some detail work. You don't miss something until it's gone. How could I have been so stupid! Oh well, I'll just have to push on.

Evening all.

Just stopping in before bed. Sorry I haven't been in, all sorts of things going on nowadays... Oh, and just for an update, the divorce went through. Official as of Thanksgiving day. Planning was awesome on that one. Get officially divorced on Thanksgiving... At least the Cowboys demolished the Seahawks, eh? Good thing I'm an optimist, right?

On the train side of things, my FEF's decoder turns out to be too big... Won't fit in the slot provided in the boiler. I wish rivarossi would've been normal and put the plug in the tender... Now for another $25 on another bloody decoder. At least I'll have this one for my next engine. (probably a blueline mike) My modular group has the layout at the LHS now. Guess I'll go operate at some point, get to know it better. Haven't officially joined, but I've guest operated and I know the jist of things now.

On school, first trimester ended last week. I know my worst score is math, which is an all new low for me. 85.7%... God I hope the highschools won't take that badly. But I do know I have the highest in my class, which is a bit sad. Our new teacher is horrible, no one can connect with him and he doesn't explain things very well, and teaches on a college level. Not to mention there are some ruddy SoapBox at my school that will make fun of me for just about anything, even random things. They don't even care, and I really really wish I could take a swing at one of them... I would, but that would look bad for getting into highschool...

The fire is burning, and they're just dumping more logs on it.
This rant is over.

Mark.

Insomnia...over tired I guess. While here I'll have some Chamomile tea, please.

***Paul, CONGRATS on the finished master bedroom & no flat tires. Nice you have a guy who will come out into the field and fix those for you.

Our cat is having a wilding tonight. She uses my hand as a sparring partner. It's fun until she catches a claw in the corner of a fingernail or repunctured a previous hole she made. Her nice name is Millie, her various nicknames abound (Little Monster, Little Snake, Vamp Cat, Little Tiger, Tooth & Claw, etc...). She has access to my computer at night, so she might well join in the plotting cat talk after hours. I may never know.

Duke - I almost forgot - you might check this website for possible parts numbers and diagrams for your loco:

http://www.hoseeker.org/

They have a lot of the older brands and instruction sheets, etc., so they may have IHC/Rivarossi (was that the brand?) in there somewhere. Hope that helps you some.

Evening, Chloe - I'll try a cup of that turkey soup Ray's talking about, please. Thanks!

Sawyer, I always heard that (unless one had dynamic brake fans and the other didn't - which varies from RR to RR), it was awfully hard to tell a GP7 from a GP9 without looking at the builders' plates. So you may not have to get a new shell after all. Best wishes on getting the layout and mini-layouts done. Thumbs Up

Sounds like everybody's having trouble with their (or friend's) cats lately - RT's getting a blowgun and tranquilizer darts for his li'l darlings, and Mark has a pre-trained napkin shredder on his hands. Shock Have the Diners' cats been chatting after their 'staff' are sleeping at night? I thought only Spring and Spooky and Remington were doing that, but maybe they've all started going online at night....Whistling

Ray, this soup is fantastic - my compliments! Bow Doesn't even make me think about a big ol' Tom turkey or hen from last Thursday, either. Wink

Flip, I thought maybe at work they were still giving you those split shifts like a while back, with the gap in the middle of the day. Hope things get straightened out on your hours before long. Yeah!!

Jeff, I like that tree you posted the photo of earlier today, too. On your glasses, do you have a Lions' Club in your area of Louisiana? I know around here, they're known for helping people get glasses. That, or Galaxy's suggestion could cut your costs down (and not have to cut out the MRR budget for as long).

Grrroooooannnnn!... Ray, it just hit me about your joke on the jazz musicians...That kind of bridge!Laugh

I'll finish up this cup of soup and then head for home. I'm ready for bedtime tonight (and I don't have any cats to wear me out, either). Prayers for a good night's sleep for all.

Blessings and prayers,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Evening Gang: The right hand margin dissapeared again so I tryed the " compatibility " box in the tool bar and low and behole everything is normal. I have used the compatibility thing on the pages when the pages are so spread out but didn't think about using it when I post.

Jim the layout in MR is HO standard gauge. The beer line was a part of the Milwaukee Road. I use to live very near it and would get to see a many trains on it. It ran from North of Milwaukee all the way to downtown. A very interesting operation.

We moved into our finally finished master bed room today. John actually got the move done while Mary Ann and I were at the doctors. It is very nice and so large. John did a good job on it.

I finally got the last of the mesquite out of the field. One of the last plants had a tap root that went all the way across the 7 foot bucket of the loader. I hate to call the mesquites bushes since when they get full grown they are really big and tree like. When they are small they are more like bushes. Ether way they have the thorns. I've been very happly surprised to not have a flat on this job. I have the tire repair guy on speed dial if you know what I mean. He comes right out into the field and fixes the flat. No way I'm going to take off a rear tractor tire and haul it in.

Well I'm going to hit the sack and enjoy the new digs.

To top things off I lost my glasses. I had placed them on the front of the car between the hood and the windshield while I was working on the car. When I finished I went for a test drive to a neighbors place 3 miles away. It wasn't until after I got back that I realized what I did. I've searched the road side between my place and my neighbors place from the car and on foot to no avail. I guess I'm gonna have to figure out a way to come up with $300 for new glasses. Not an easy trick when your total monthly income is $627. There's not gonna be any train money in the budget for 5 or 6 months I guess.

Jeff, I get my glasses at Sam's club...no membership need to use Optical dept. or prescription Dept. {by law at least in NY}

I got eye exam {partially on my medicare} and lined bifocals for $147.00 with a new set of frames this time.

I can't see without my glasses anyway, but I have learned to never put them anywhere stupid- my fault is putting them down while changing clothes and sitting on them! Or knocking them off the night stand and standing on them! Banged Head

Jeffrey that is terrible!  Hopefully they will show up..........

OK everyone, SOUP'S READY!   Turned out gooooooooooooooood!  Nothing like home made hot Turkey soup on a cold evening.  Had a couple rolls left over from the feast and the last of the Pumpkin Pie (sorry Philip).

I was looking for an old humorous e-mail about men saving money so I could barb Jeffrey about the glasses.  Couln'd find it but did run across this old musicians joke...... Enjoy!

Two New York City jazzers got a gig in Chicago but had to drive separate cars.

When the trumpet player arrived at the gig, he was told the sax player had been
killed tragically on a bridge in Indiana.

He looked confused... then said, "Man, there's no bridge in Indiana."

Ok, so I was the confused. After taking a second glance at your comment and looking hard at the switch, is that already a left-hand one? I think I'll keep it because the biggest thing running will be that GP7.

What if you get something bigger in the future?

Well, this isn't taking over for my 4x8, just something that I can build quickly, take to shows if I ever can, and if I get ticked off at my 4x8, I can just run a train on this little one and calm down. But, if I ever get the urge, I can definitely expand this with the interchange siding, just extend the main to another table that has the other town on the line, and the main that runs down will represent the run to a mine. So, this can expand if I ever want to, and I'll have a bigger layout as well, lol.

I got 102 trackplans, and the layout on page 14, I think, is a little 2x4 layout that, with a little modifications (swapping four switches to lefts instead of right, I'd only need one switch, and changing up the scenic aspects of the layout a little),

Not sure how'd you do that.  The plan as drawn has 3 left-hand turnouts and only 3 right-hand turnouts.  You probably mistaked the turnout in front of the station as a right-hand turnout.  The plan's arrangement eliminates an S-curve for the cross-over there.

Mark

Are you sure we're looking at the same plan? It's plan #12, the Montandon Branch, featured in GMR 2002. Where the industries are, the plan as is has a passing siding made of 4 right hand switches. I'll swap it to 4 left hands, b/c all i have is 5 left hand switches, and 0 rights. And yes, I know I need one more switch. Sorry for the confusion!

***Jeffrey, as long as you aren't in horrible agony, it sure beats the alternative. Is your foot still imrpoving?

The feet continue to improve.

I replaced the EGR valve on my car today. It improved things a bit but it's still running a bit rough. Being that the EGR valve I put on is used it may be bad also, so I'll get another one when I can and try it. If that doesn't improve things then I'll have to go over the vacuum lines (groan) one by one to see if there are any leaks anywhere. I'm looking forward to that like I would to a root canal  without anesthesia. To top things off I lost my glasses. This week I'm babysitting my girlfriend's kitten.  I call the kitten "Possum" because that's what her fur length and coloring reminds me of.  She'd pass for a possum if she had a long snout.

The most fun Possum has had was when I sorted through a box of a thousand or so tiny bags of model railroad detail parts I've accumulated over the years.  She jumped at every package as I tossed them in various piles to sort them.  Luckily, Possum hasn't knocked around my half-assembled kits and assorted parts lying on the dining room table.  So far, she's only torn up a couple of paper napkins.  Good thing she sleeps much of the time.

It is COLD way down here south! It's 6:38 pm, and the temp is 37 degrees farenhiet!

Well, I'm probably going to stop working on my 4x8 for a little while (right now you're rolling your eyes and thinking "oh great, ANOTHER layout change. Kid, stick with something!"). However, hear me out:

I got 102 trackplans, and the layout on page 14, I think, is a little 2x4 layout that, with a little modifications (swapping four switches to lefts instead of right, I'd only need one switch, and changing up the scenic aspects of the layout a little), I get a nice small Appalachian shortline set in 1959. Calling it the "Lake Bealuh Western", in 1959 it is a coal hauler. However, from its start in 1874-1903, it was a logging line, but the tree industry dried up. But three months later, coal was discovered in them thar hills, saving the line from abandonment. They dieslized in 1955, buying a GP7. I think the supplies to get this layout sceniced and running will be my christmas list, so I can have something running that I can enjoy while building my main layout. And I find a home for my GP9 (will turn GP7 w/ a new GP7 shell, instead of a new GP9 shell). I'll just need a half dozen frieght cars (3 40' boxcars, 3 55 ton fishbelly hoppers). Paint scheme will include NYC jade green and a dark black. Will draw up a track plan for it (aka plan in RTS 8.0 so I can play around with the scenic features). I can also expand this at some point to include the LBW's other town, but for now, I xcan get the beginning and end into this small layout.

JIM-No not lunch break. In order to cut o.t. we work 4 days. Three of my normalQuestion days are 11 or more hours on the clock. Mondays, on the clock, is 8 to 10 hours. Used to get 110 hours average for my two weeks, now lucky to get 83 or more. Usually leave home befor 6 and get home around 7:30. Doesn't leave much time to get on 'puker. About every two months I rotate on a saturday to do dialysis. Otherwise I do laundry and other things to help Deb.

Best wishes to all and Prayers offered also.

Okay I'm now looking for a stun gun for cats I don't want to hurt my babies just mellow them out a little . Remember the Xmas tree ( yes I know its all of 26") well they took off with it last night as we were trying to sleep . Pulled it out of its base over the trains ( the trains were all still on the track lol) and took the tree to the den. (I think they were thinking of putting it in the fireplace and roasting marshmallows )

Or I'm going to have to get them tranquilizers and give it to them each night

Well I'm getting ready to take track into the VA so I can make 2 loops one around each tree on the 3rd flood ( community living centers) nursing homes (we have 2 wings up there thats for our fultime residents.)

Afternoon, Zoe - I'll have a root beer float and a cheeseburger, please. Thanks!

Docs say I'm doing good for someone in my condition. I guess that's good.

Uh, Jeff, did they mean 'alive', or something else? Smile,Wink, & Grin

Jury duty for 'free' (or, worse yet, costing several days' worth of wages) should at least recognize that it may be our civic duty, but that cases that drag on (and on, and on...) - often needlessly - don't make sense for anyone. Suprisingly, I have never been called for jury duty (yet). Go figure!

Galaxy, you're right on the cost of those lamps. I hadn't seen any word on studies of their effectiveness in a long while, so I can't speak to that part. Do be taking care of yourself, though.

Ray, hope you get your teeth taken care of quickly today.

Paul, is that Beer Line a narrow gauge layout? I'd looked at the preview of the issue online, and for some reason I was thinking it was G narrow gauge...

Rob, good to hear that things on your house are getting closer to 'done'.

Duke, hope you get the drive on that loco figured out as how to fix it. Might take some jury-rigging (no, not the illegal kind...) to get it working again. I think at home I have a website that has directions for various older locos and stuff, so it might have a part number on that site for you to use in trying to get thngs running again.

Flip, good to see you in the Diner again. On lunch break? Dinner

Cold day in Cape G. today, but at least we have some sunshine Cool This morning was move-to-the-other-end-of-the-building time, as the crane was hear to lift our old furnace/air unit off and the new one in. Really fun, trying to find a place to take phone calls and to see one person who came in with a medication question for her doctor. Luckily, they were done fairly quickly.

I'll be in the window booth, enjoy watching the afternoon peddler freight do its thing. Yeah!!

Blessings and good health,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

Lee I tried the link you had and it gave me different places to go but not to a hobby shop and I checked the MR and that shop isn’t listed. So maybe it is as Garry said, they have gone out of business.

Garry I will give your suggestion a try and I think I have some 2-56 screws and nuts around here someplace and I will have to take a run over to P & D hobbies to see if they have anything.

Thanks to you both for the help

JR Sounds like you are coming right along on the house.

Rob You will have the train room before you know it now.

John All I can say about your crane is,WOW!!!!

in a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

***Jeffrey, as long as you aren't in horrible agony, it sure beats the alternative. Is your foot still imrpoving?

***Robby, Jury Duty can be a costly pain, but is important. Sat on a couple trials when much younger. Back then I was working 3 & 4 part time jobs to get buy. Since then I figured out the mention of my father having been in the CIA would automatically get one of the lawyers in each case to have me dismissed from the selection process.Cool

With colder temps the grout on the tiles in the back have not completely dried yet. Want to finish putting up the ceiling fans today, but might have to wait another day.

Stripped four stalls & filled with fresh shavings.  Made all the hay runs except for the miniatures pasture (horses/donkeys/cow). Taking a coffee reak before heading back out to finish up.

Have a good day all. Cowboy Rob
