You are right, it is Varney's 'Casey Jones' 4-6-0. You might be able to order replacement parts for it from Bowser, they inherited the Varney dies and still make the locomotive. It was a little sweetheart in its time, and still makes for a nice-running little loco. Looks to me like you'll need the 4-wheel lead truck, main rods and eccentric gear. Bowser should have them. They're good people to deal with.

I was rather startled to find a cut of about 9 or so former Penn Central X79 boxcars all the way out here in Nebraska, alongside I-80 near 96th Street in Omaha. According to http://pc.smellycat.com/index.html, these were purchased by Kelloggs, which makes sense since this is big grain country. Pretty neat find for an Eastern boy in Uncle Pete's frontyard.

what engine is this?
Holy crap Dave-I remember reading about those PC Kellogg cars on the same website, & maybe the Conrail Cyclo, but I'm not sure (it's late)
They look like primo weathering examples, not to mention the fact they're still existing in their paint jobs in 2008! If you can (without trespassing) get some closeups!!!!
Here's the newest addition to my fleet. an Atlas GP40. According to what I've been able to dig up on it, this model is around 20 years old (perhaps older) and still runs great.
The Rio Grande paint job is about to go away.

Just some recent progress shots of the platform:
Had to do a few color changes to get the colour to match the original plastic color. Got some Altas fencing I'm assembling, once finished I'll paint it and install it.
Indeed, it's Varney's so-called 4-6-0 "Casey Jones", which is a complete misnomer since the real 4-6-0 locomotive operated by Jones looked very little like it. Jones engineered for the IC, while the model is most siimilar to an SP Harriman locomotive. Incidentally, the Varney model came in two versions, a standard one with simple valve gear and the "deluxe" version with Walshaert valve gear. This loco has a very long production record, appearing first in 1951 and still available today through Bowser (including replacement parts).

Here's what I worked on last week. I finaly got tired of using the dining room table for a work bench. Now I'm waiting for the drawer hardware to show up. And a more comfortable chair will be nice.
Tom and CNJ831 thanks for the info. The train show in timonium is in october im going to see if i can dig something up there. If not i will contact bowser.

Adam Thompson Model Railroading is fun!
This Grain Elevator is really cool, how did you make this?
Did you print out the pics you took on card stock and then put it together like a kit?
It is so weird to see one of my local buildings in minature here.
I love it.
Let us know how you made this, I know it didn't take too long from when you took the pic until I was notified that it was done, keep up the great work, very creative and it does look better without the other building attached to it.

You should be fine.
I'm jealous.

lol, Those med bottles are great. air tight and compact. And free. Don,t worry, it's not a weeks supply. we've been saving them for a while. And lots of glue. all types of glue. I have a bank of drawers under the layout that need cleaning out and reorganizing. You know how it is, a place for everything and nothings in it's place........
Thanks for all the nice coments . Make sure you show this to your wife and tell her you need one. Christmas is comming.
I'm envious....
I have some of the stuff that you have already, so I might have a head-start in cloning your workbench. I have the same type of lamp and drawer set.
So far my work bench is a wal-mart folding table (like they type people make N-scale Layouts on). Has a vase for my brushes, scrap material goes into another set of drawers. Other stuff goes into a drawer like you have. I have a small cutting mat. Right now it's full of these projects:
1 P2K SD9, needs a new motor and decoder (again on the decoder, 3rd stinking time; works fine for a while, then Pfft, dead)
3 Kato C425s, needing decoders, paint, and some other modifications. (like making the wieght part of the frame, directional lighting, paint, and making it so the pilots don't bend when pulling a heavy load)
1 P2K Gp30, just some handrail paint, and the piping under the body
1 Athean Gp35. needing the worms and driveshafts (I already know the athearn ones will work, have yet to order them) horn and handrails. The P2k Gp30 handrails will work, the way P2K lists their parts, I can finish the Gp30 and Gp35 externally for cheap.
1 P2K U28B, needs the original coupler boxes, and a horn
I got stuff to do, but not a whole lot of time or money. (Full-time job and Full-time college)

Wants: 1. high-quality, sound equipped, SD40-2s, C636s, C30-7s, and F-units in BN. As for ones that don't cost an arm and a leg, that's out of the question....
2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

I just happen to like oak and have all the tools to make cabinets and finish wood. I made a poor man's OTT light. 6500k/75w daylight bulb from walmart. Sure is nice to work on something and walk away from it for awhile then come back and it's just where and how you left it. I got stuff to do, but not a whole lot of time or money. (Full-time job and Full-time college) same problem. either too much work and no money or no work and no money

As always, the work in this thread is inspiring!
spectratrone, i'm envious! I've saved your photo for future reference when I build my dream workbench (hopefully soon - before the end of the year)
Tyler, glad you went ahead and got it done. It's sad, but you're making way for the bigger and better. We've got your supplies here, so let's plan for you to come up here next weekend.
Nice desk... can we see it again?
At least the images that got repeated over and over last week were trains!
Carry on...

I got an urge to do some modelling, so I made some trees.
Using Aggro's method, I ground down cedar 1/2" dowels to a point. Then I scored the dowels well with three different saw blades, twirling the dowel under it so that I wasn't just making a bunch of overlapping vertical lines. Then, cutting different sized disks of blue natural fiber furnace filter (which I wisely bought three years ago when they were widely available locally), I teased the disks into several thinner plates of fibers, and slid them down the top of the dowel. Then I sprayed it all an acrylic flat brown...rather dark it turns out.
Then I did three sprays of white acrylic paint wash over the works, fibers 'n all. Looks a wee bit heavy.
I let it all dry for about half an hour, and then used Super77 (by 3M) spray glue and did my best to spray the fiber disks...only. My success could only be called modest. Anyway, I then quickly sprinkled "blended turf" ground foam from WS, and then oversprayed it all with some Tresemme hair spray.
