Good evening to all...rain this morning, fog and high humidity all day, but IKE passed well to the West of us and up into northern Vermont, NH and Maine and into Quebec later.

I was able to work on a new mountain for my wife's Dept 56 Christmas Village display. I have an HO track running all through the village, total track length is about 75 feet, and it has a 4% grade up into the mountains. This is just a little to overbearing for the smaller locomotives that I use on the layout, so I reduced the grade to a max of 2% today on part of the layout, the rest I will do as time permits, but before Nov. 1st when the wife says it must be scheduled...hmmmm, sounds like a production boss.

I have been using blue 2" foam for the mountains, stacked as high as is appropriate for looks. The hot wire tool works great for slicing into the foam, no mess as you get with saws. The construction is now in the new work area of the former old garage, so now I have a window and a door for ventillation, as well as a floor fan, just to be on the safe side. I am using sculptamold for final touch-up to the cuts for smooth roadbed.

LEE: Thanks for the phone number, I will give them a call on Monday. I looked all over the place on the web and could not find and Beaver animal figures, plenty of other animals though.

GARRY: Yes, I saw later last night and again today that the death numbers have risen abouve 17. Sad [:(] I just don't understand why an Engineer would blow right through the RED signal unless he had a medical emergency, was drunk, or on drugs, or was mad at the world and decided to end it all. Prayers go out to those effected.

DER JOHN: WOW, $40??? You did real good mon ami!!! The wall should come out fine from what you described.

JEFF: That is a shame to lose such a beautiful Willow tree. From the size of what your photos show, it looks like about 60 to 70 years old.

RYAN: Glad to hear that your dad is doing better, he will have some adjustments to make with eating. My son noticed changes after his GB operation. Without bile from the GB, fats do not get handled very well and they tend to "pass through the system" rather quickly after a meal.

Pax Vobiscum,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! super chief n: I mean that the place goes dead for days on end! C'mon, you should know what I mean!

Hello to all, here's a little breakdown of what I do:

I have space for a 2x8 foot swiching layout, but have yet to start constuction. I am saving to fix my camera and buy an airbrush first.

I am a member of a model railroad club (see my sig).

Up until a little while ago, I modeled just about everything, and everything was ok. I have recently decided to choose an era, and railroads to model. I have desided to model CP from 1989 to the present, and also include a fictional shortline, which interchanges with CN/CSX/CP. I have yet to choose exactly where I model, but I have a rough idea: Somewhere south out of Montreal, down into the Eastern Townships, and into the States.

But I'm not too worried about that right now, since I have a limited amount of space to work with. It would be an industrial switching layout, with a Paper Mill as the main industry.

Any other questions, feel free to ask!

Alex

i know what you mean alex.

well like i said i model n scale. i really don't have an era or anything but i'm about to focus on bnsf and burlington stuff with a super chief on the side. i use modules(still working on my first one.)

also down the line i would like to start to do some freelance modules on a freelance railroad that i'm going to make called the G&K(game and ko) it would be based off of video games and connect to regular modules through a tunnel.

 thats all i think.

Evening, Flo - I'll have a bowl of tomato soup and a grilled cheese sandwich, please. Thanks!

Had a longer post written and closed the wrong tab in my browser. Banged Head [banghead] Banged Head [banghead]Sigh [sigh]

Back from the CD pre-release concert, and I'm a little tired but energized at the same time (if that makes any sense).

Sign - Welcome [#welcome] to the Diner, Railfan Alex and Super Chief N! There are several other MRR'ing teens who visit here in the Diner (like MorganSawyer, Packers#1, Colby and others...). They might be able to help you with suggestions on how to say, negotiate with your folks for more trackage rights, or how to get additional MRR funds, or... Wink [;)] Have a beverage of your choice on me - just tell Flo or another of our virtual servers what you need. Oh, yeah, do be careful about hitting the TOP (top of page) - if you do, you get to pay the (virtual) tab for everyone's food and beverage orders on that page (and - besides me, even - there are some real chowhounds in here. Dinner [dinner]Shock [:O]

Rob, you're making pretty good progress on your work between the workmen's work. Thumbs Up [tup]

Dick, sounds like your shop needs to unionize and get a shop steward, with a supervisor on your schedule like that... Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Of course, maybe you could negotiate

Jeff, that tree must have had some soggy roots and/or some nasty winds, to topple over like that.

Looks like the storm is already moving through Indiana and Ohio, and on its way toward Dick, JP and JR. Batten down anything loose, fellas!

Ryan, good to hear that the docs are giving your Dad the Thumbs Up [tup] and setting up his follow-up appointment already. Tell him to keep up the good work! Yeah!! [yeah]

Gav, with the sweet'uns coming back now, I guess we won't be seeing you as much, since you may be 'cat-herding' for a bit...Cowboy [C):-)]

PC, have you been busy with work calls a lot this weekend? Haven't seen you in the Diner as much.

Tom, good to hear that you were able to get out to the layout now that you're moving around better. Of course, I'm sure your spiders might disagree...Wink [;)] Is Gizmo almost ready to become a housecat - and have Spooky and Lowell start teaching him the finer points of cabeese-stealing and other fun stuff? Whistling [:-^]

Well, I'd best get finishing up my dinner. I'll be back in the morning!

Blessings,

Evening Gang:

Welcome to Alex and Super Chief n. There are several teens in here as you have seen. Me, I'm about 52+ years past being a teen.

Right now I have a splitting headach. My allergies have been acting up lately. This is the first time in maybe 15 years that they have done that. I'm going to head out and get something for the head.

Jerry and Terry please let us hear from you soon.

The winds got really nasty here and was blowing just the right direction. The tree was already leaning toward the bridge. The winds were around 60 mph when the tree went over.

Yeah, my phone has been ringing off the hook.  I've had several customers down, but the important one is a nursing home that has been bouncing in and out of service for the last couple of days.  When hospitals and nursing homes (and police, fire, etc.) go out of service, all bets are off.  Everything gets moved to the back burner until thats fixed.

JIM: Not to worry about IKE hitting me or J.R etc, the storm went up through Chicago and into Canada...1000 miles West of us.....Ike is no threat to us anymore. Now, as for a shop steward, that does not work when one has been married 48 years. I have other techniques that work far better and I don't have those darn Union dues that only feather the bank accounts of the Union bosses.

Time for bed guys, almost midnight here on the East coast,

Good Morning All,

A regular and a blueberry muffin toasted and buttered please Zoe. Spent yesterday at the museum mostly fixing construction equipment so the trackwork can continue. After that, I went to the house and started tearing out the ceiling and insulation in the train room. From the amount of mold already starting (yes I wore a mask, gloves [unpowdered] and goggles) I'm not optomistic about the stuff behind the walls at all.

Welcome to our new "customers". we're not a teen moddling place here, just a friendly virtual diner open 24/7, frequented by people of all ages where we can talk and listen and sometimes even deal with model trains.

Derjohn - will we see more pics soon?

Dick - glad the storm and heavy rains missed us both.

TrainsRme - Congrats on the new train room. Any chance of pics later?

Jerry - hope they get  you fixed up pronto. Sleep is not something you can do without.

Tom - careful with the cane. My wife refused to use the recommended crutches after her first knee surgery and has had back trouble since from the offset pressure on her spine from said cane.

Ryan - glad your Dads' ops went well. Our prayers for a speedy recovery.

PC - oddly enough I went to school with Steve Perry. We met when he sat behind me in 7th grade math. We didn't get on that well and it wasn't helped when he tried out for our band and wasn't good enough. That was long before the voice lessons and many years of working to become an overnight success. And yes he is a wacko.

Jeff - glad you made out alright with Ike. Count me as another person appalled at your repaint on a classic Rio Grande loco, but it is after all your railroad.

Gavin - good luck with your new charges. Hope it goes better than last year.

Hope the rest of you in the hurricanes' path get back online soon and are ok. Gotta go - w..k calls.

Good morning all.

Well Ike passed through here last night, about 1M people are without power in Ohio. Our power flickered on and off several times but no power loss. There were trees on the highways last night and a couple overturned trucks.  The RR formally known as Conrail had traffic stopped at the bridges due to the winds.

ROB, Nice progress on the house!

JEFF, those willows get pretty massive especially when you have a 12 month growing season.  That wood makes nice jewelry boxes and shadow boxes if you can save and season any of it.

ALEX, welcome to the diner feel free to post almost anything.

DICK, I'm sure it's Preiser or Woodland Scenic's set.  If he can't find it I'll go over and see if I remember where it was.

Super Chief, Welcome to the diner make your self at home.  I'm working a freelance RR myself but in HO.

PC, after hearing the initial damage reports this morning (wind damage) I imagine you have tons of job security this morning.  Good luck with everything.

GAV, my Mom just retired from the University in Bowling Green, OH (house keeping & cook).  I asked her how she missed all the kids coming back to school; I think she is still laughing evidently she doesn't miss the kids at all.

JR, how is the new roof shaping up?

Lee,

Thanks for asking. The roof is in fact on and has stopped most of the water. The walls and rough openings for the windows still pose a risk but at least we're getting there. nJ.R.

Jeff, let me know how those flat cars turn out.

The TYCO cars are easy to convert but I haven't tried any other brands. I finished the ACCURAIL 89' TOFC kit last night but I think I'll sell it as it dosen't fit well on the steam layout.  I have bids out on two 75' Walther's TOFC and 7 MANTUA & TYCO flat cars.

Haven't been in for some time... Don't know why. School I guess.

All I do know is that the Dallas Cowboys are going to be shooting some pretty birdies out of the sky and I might be winning myself an MTH GS4 tonight. Today is going to be fun.

Time for tea! Earl Grey Hot, (Make it so, Chole!)

A big to the new guys...Alex:

and also include a fictional shortline, which interchanges with CN/CSX/CP.
...if only you weren't in Horribly Oversized instead of Normal like super chief n, my freelance short line the Maritime Trunk (MT... "Service is an MT promise!") could have been persuaded to go as far as Montreal!

Back when this Diner was The Coffee Shop, we had a very talented teen modeller, Noah. (He took great photos too - see http://cs.trains.com/forums/574027/ShowPost.aspx for accolades about that) He dropped out mainly from pressure of school work, I think. (That lad had his priorities straight too!Thumbs Up [tup])  I've been wondering lately if he's still modelling.  If you go to http://cs.trains.com/forums/626533/ShowPost.aspx  scroll down to the fourth entry on that page, and you'll see a post by him.  Why not send an email, invite him over to the (relocated and renamed) Diner? Say Der5997 suggested it.Big Smile [:D]

Jerry: Hope they get that chair back to you ASAP.  What would you sleep in tonight otherwise? Concerned. Angel [angel]

Dick:

DER JOHN: WOW, $40??? You did real good mon ami!!! The wall should come out fine from what you described.
...that's each Dick, which I'm happy about as it's N (I see HO eBay locos going for way less, but for N, it's OK)

JR:

Derjohn - will we see more pics soon?
...thanks for asking.  The plaster pour didn't happen yesterday as lunch and the concert outing overtook it. So I just hauled out he camera. Since it needed fresh batteries, I emptied out the carry bag, and there, Lo and Behold!, was the 2G SanDisk memory stick thing I'd been looking for all over!...So thanks for asking, as I said!  Here's the situation right now.  The overall view

A look at the dam to hold back the plaster made from white spakle

and the mini-dams to keep whatever from clogging up the throw bars of the turnouts, which are way below the finished level of the concrete, and were covered over completely by the old foamboard.

Wolfgang: back also!  Our weather changed that way about a week ago, I'd say.

Got to get that pour done! TTFN.

Good Afternoon All.

I think I'll have a Coke.

Ike hit us early this morning, and caused more sleep deprivation than anything else. I went to bed just after midnight, only to wake up around 4:30. It wasn't the storm that woke me up, it was really the few electronic devices in the house that started beeping because the power went out...
So I pretty much sat around in the dark with a flashlight, and figured I would complete the homework I didn't do over the weekend. Tongue [:P] There was lots of wind, and not much rain. A few older trees did fall in my area. And of course, lots of twigs and LOTS of leaves everywhere.

BTW: Noah does occasionally talk about some modeling, but he has been busy railfanning. He has some very nice photos, as you know, that he posts on the forums, and also on his website.

See y'all later!

Sounds good. I got a bit of SF going, I think I'll habng out west with my Homely Offbeat modelling. Beats trying to see details in Nominal scale. But there's some great N out there, to be sure.

A word of advice: Try to avoid seams where modules meet in or increible close to tunnels It;s that whole accsess issue, and anyplace rail doesn't completely line up and you can't reach is just asking for regular derailments.
