Steam vs Deseil

I prefer deseil, I just like the deseil fuel smell, the loud nosie, and the raw power of the Deseil Locomotives. Also I like the colorful paint sceams they put on the locomotives.[:D]

I love steam for the simple reason you can see all the moving parts. To me it's poetry in motion and adds to scene. Diesels to me look too much like the boxcars they pull. Steam engines are very diversified and have personality[:D]

Let's look at both sides

Steam Engines Emplyed more people.

-You needed at least 3 crew ememers, Conductor, Fireman, Engineer even a Breakman
- When steam engines were double or Tripple Headrs, rarely, you would need 2 X 4, or 3 X 4 Crews, thus one Train could possibly have a crew of 8 - 16 people.


Dieasel Engines are all colaberated by Computer

Notch 5 is the same in a GE, or an EMD, Baldwain or an ALCO.

you don't need crews to run the second engine, or the third one... etc.

So.. i don't know... put me down for both Equally.

Diesel's are great, but my heart is with steam. I just love the whistle, the cough of the exhaust, the moving parts, the steam escaping, etc. They were some sight to see, rather they were a masive 4-8-8-4 or a 2-8-0, booming along at 80 mph or yard creaping, they built America.

I was a kid at the end of the steam era and I used to love watching those big locos belching smoke and steam. You just knew they were alive and very powerful, I don't get the same feeling from diesels.

I prefer diesel since that is what actually exists now. When I was a kid my dad always insisted on steam locomotives for my layout. I always felt kind of "out of it" and wanted to run the type of trains I saw and rode on.

So know that I'm the adult and get to choose, I'm running the diesels I wanted to run when I was a kid!

I think my problem is that I have no nostalgic connection to steam. Even though I am 42, I was born after the railroads had all converted to diesel. Steam is interesting, but not special to me. However I was truly impressed when I saw 3985 up close!

I am old enough to have seen the Western Maryland steam locomotives running in my town but I just don't recall them. The F7 units I recall seeing many of. So for this reason I model both steam and diesel in the 50-60s era. Before my dad passed away a couple years ago he said that I use to like watching the steam locomotives.

I voted for diesel because that is what I model, but if I had the space and the money I may have gone with steam[:)]

I model late steam and early diesel and like them both. If I had to choose I'd choose steam. Everything is exposed and you can see them work. They smoke, they belch steam and they make wonderful noises.

I run steam exclusively. I'm not old enough to have seen the steam engines working the mainline but I have allways been fasinated with steam. I have seen some steam excursion trains running and there's just nothing like watching a steam engine pulling a train down the track, the smoke the steam, it just seems like it's alive! I get excited just thinking about it!

After riding in an open vestibule last June behind 2816, nothing compares to steam in my opinion.
It's a breathing, live piece of man-made machinery.
From the moving parts to the aroma of the exhaust.
My heart is set on steam, any day of the week.

As for 1: 1 models, steam rules. Diesels don't have as much character as steam does. All stink pots look the same. Union Pacific's SD40-2 appears basically the same as Burlington Northern's. But with steam everthing has its own special look. Think about how many different shaped 4-8-4s there are. All unique.

Steam all the way. I've got a couple of diesel switchers floating around on my layout, since I'm a proto modeler and the real roads had 'em, but steam rules my mainlines.

Diesels are impersonal boxes with engines in them. Steam was a living, breathing beast that has a LOT more character to it. I'll drive 400 miles to ride a steam fantrip, but not 20 miles to watch modern diesels fly by all day.

Not all of them, dougal. Just looks at SP's GS4 Daylight 4-8-4's, or Southerns green cresents, or the UP's Grayhound scheme on their FEF's and Challengers, or the ATSF Blue Goose, there's TONS of colored steam.

Indeed. Each steam engine has like its own personality. They are so alive. Breathing, groaning, hissing, grunting machines. [^]

Diesel all the way. The amout of power in a realativly compact space is amazing from an engineering stand point. Also is the things my sons see and will remember.

Also I used to work for a company that overhauled turbochargers for EMD, Alco and GE locomotives.

I have a fond liking to steam but grew up on deisel. I model deisel locomotives would not model anything else.Steam is good ,but Desil is better.

Personal Preference is Electric, The Milwaukee Road, New Haven, and a host of others
Diesels won out mostly because of economics. They do on my pike as they did in most cases in real life.
