Otherwise, the other 160 locomotives are a mix.

I have one set of duplicates: two E-R Models RF-16A Sharks, one in BLW demonstrator and one in NYC colors. I tried superdetailing the NYC shell but failed miserably. I found an old Model Power B-unit shell to put onto the NYC's chassis, but it won't fit. I plan on selling both once I get a new shell for the NYC's chassis since they don't fit in with my early 90's layout.
I also have three Athearn BB GP40-2s done differently from each other. One is a Conrail GP40-2, one is a NS GP40 high-hood I plan on stripping and repainting into a fantasy MEC scheme, and a GP40-2 shell I'm working on turning into a GP40-2LW.
I don't mind dupicate models, but I try to limit the number of each model per road names to two...

Do dummies count? (Yeah, I know, "only to 10, unless they take their shoes off.")
My duplicate-models are 2 powered F7-A's, and a dummy A and B. I've got 2 powered GP-9's (P2K), plus one old Athearn dummy, and another non-working unit that needs to be "neutered." But, my layout isn't big enough to have so many engines, so they mostly sit in boxes down below.
I've got 2 subway trains, too, each of which has 1 powered unit and 3 dummies. One dummy, normally at the front of the subway train, is the video camera car. I've thought of installing a camera in the front of a dummy F7 as well.
It takes an iron man to play with a toy iron horse.

1 SW9
1 SW8
1 F-7
1 GP7
1 GP9
1 GP18
1 GP20
1 GP30
1 GP38
1 GP40
1 SD40-2
1 2-6-0
1 2-8-0
As you can see, I span several generations... the good news is that each fits in perfectly with the rest of my layout... which is currently in the "pink foam" era...
I have:
I've got two Pacifics, one is a Southern Pacific with a Vandy oil tender and the other is a Santa Fe with a regular box type coal tender. I also have two Southern Pacific A & B Black Widow sets, three Santa Fe GP-38s, two Union Pacific 8-40CWs and three Santa Fe 8-40CWs.
Tracklayer
I'm pretty sure my GP38-2 fleet is the largest, with 8 of them. 2 Atlas Trainman (Soo) 4 Athearn (CP) and 2 P2K (Conrail)
After that I have 4 Athearn SD40-2s (3 CN & 1 CR)
and 6 Athearn AC4400s (CP)
I have pairs of several engines, including but not limited to, Atlas RS3s (freelance Interport, belt line freight)
P2K RS27s (freelance Interport)
BLI RSD15s (Freelance interport)
Genesis F7s (Freelance Selenian Lines Commission, Commuter)
Athearn P40s (Freelance SLC)
P1K C-Liners (Freelance SLC)
Among others.
Eventually I'd like to get three more Soo SD60s so that I have two matched sets, and more large Conrail engines, including another SD50 or two, same with more SD70MACs and some C40-8Ws.
Cheers!

I don't think it's unusual to have two locos of the same model and generally I do. Two Ac6000's, two ES44AC's two GP40x's etc. However some locos are mainstays and it is logical to have a "fleet" of them. To that end, the road has seven SD70's and nine Dash nine's (various types, Kato, Atherarn, Athearn RTR), four SD 90Mac's. If I were running coal out of the powder river, I'd have a fleet of AC4400's.

I keep the MUed groups together, I don't think one engine will haul more than 15 cars up the hills on the club's layout. (I'v gotten around 30 with 2 Gp30s up the hill, these are old athearn BBs with plastci wheels so it could probably be higher.)

2. An end to the limited-production and other crap that makes models harder to get and more expensive.

sfrailfanI was just wondering if a lot of you guys have -I don't know say 12 of the same model loco.
My JNR 'more than one' roster reflects what I saw in 1964:
There are also a couple of one-off steam tank locos (C11 class 2-6-4T and C12 class 2-6-2T), an ED17 class boxcab Bo-Bo motor, an EH10 class Bo-Bo+Bo-Bo motor and a DE10 class C-B diesel-hydraulic.
My freelance coal hauler has a motley collection of one-off tank locos, 0-4-0T, 0-6-0T, 2-6-2T and 0-8-0T, reflecting the locomotive acquisition policies of its management (buy up the junk other people are selling, at scrap prices.) Still in its future, one or more 12-drivered articulateds (supposedly assembled by mixing and matching scrap parts.) Its JNR inspiration had a much more level profile and was operated exclusively by C11 class tank locos.

Virtually all of my duplicates are from the NKP. No wonder, since that's the road I'm modeling!
Large railroads rarely bought "onesie-twosies" of steam engines, and usually assigned large numbers of few classes to the same division to make maintenance easier on the shop forces. Those 22 NKP steamers represent 95% of the NKP power that will appear on my layout on a regular basis (I've got one 2-8-0 and one 44-tonner as well, besides my NKP "collection fleet" that won't normally run on the layout). It might be a bit monotonous, but it is realistic!

I try for a realistic model roster.
The only locos I have that are singles are switchers, P2K 0-8-0 and 0-6-0 and Atlas/Kato S2 and an SW900, The reason behind having only one switcher is that typically a yard would have the same switcher(s) allocated to it for years. I only have two small yards. The 0-8-0 switches the larger yard and the 0-6-0 the smaller. The S2 and SW900 rarely get used, until I rebuild the GER that is. The only other solo unit is a single Spectrum doodlebug. Again, because they were typically seen singly.
Everything else I have at least two. When I make the initial purchase, I always purchase a minimum of two of the same type of locomotive, except switchers as outlined above. In many cases I have three or four or more of the same locomotive. I have six Spectrum 2-8-0s for example. The reason for this is the fleet look. I don't collect "toy trains". I run a model railway and railways have many of the same class of locomotive. So when a through freight arrives in Granville Junction from Adirondack Yard near Montreal, the operator can't say "Oh, here's THE 4-8-2 because, there isn't one 4-8-2, there's something like six of them, three light and around three heavy. I haven't checked lately.
Many of the steam locos in particular have been kitbashed so that there are minor variations between engines of the same class, just as in the real world.
The fleet look of a model railway. Not a toy train collection.

In HO, by far and away my Lionel HO Challengers are the ones that I have the most duplicates of, a total of 37, done in three different Railroads, UP, Rio Grande and Clinchfield, The DRGW and Clinchfield are one paint scheme with two road#s each, and the UP has four versions with Two #s each for a total of 6 versions / 12#s. I have at least one of all 12#s, and in the UP, I have at least three of each, with at least one of 7 of the 8 #s still factory sealed, these are the only trains that I have ever bought, just for the collector value alone( the ones that I have still factory sealed). I have two large display cases that when I decide where they are going, will display all twelve versions, plus the 4 of the 6 Veranda #s that I have from the Lionel HO Veranda Turbine runs. This will let have at least one of each UP# down at the club to run, in addition to the displayed and sealed ones that I have, plus some more duplicates for possible trading stock. These Lionel HO Challengers are my All Time Favorite HO Locomotives, They Look, Sound and Run GREAT.

May your flanges always stay BETWEEN the rails
The Ma&Pa had a small roster, for the early 50's there were 1 SW1, 2 NW2's, 1 SW9, 3 2-8-0's, 2 0-6-0's, 2 4-6-0's, 1 4-4-0, and 2 gas electrics. The steam engines were similar with a wheel arrangement but not identical (except maybe for the 4-6-0's, I don't know about them yet.) So far I have 2 of the diesels (and the other 2 on order) - they need decals, striping, and the SW9 needs repainted. I have kits for the 3 2-8-0's. I have another SW1 lettered for PRR which I'll use for interchange, a B&O 2-8-0 RTR also for interchange, and a GG1 - don't know where I am working that in. For the narrow gauge I have MDC kits for 1 two-truck shay, 2 inside frame 2-8-0's, and 1 outside frame 2-8-0. I also have 1 brass Forney RTR. So some duplicates but not many.
Enjoy
