I'm pretty sure my GP38-2 fleet is the largest, with 8 of them.  2 Atlas Trainman (Soo) 4 Athearn (CP) and 2 P2K (Conrail)

After that I have 4 Athearn SD40-2s (3 CN & 1 CR)

and 6 Athearn AC4400s (CP)

I have pairs of several engines, including but not limited to, Atlas RS3s (freelance Interport, belt line freight)

P2K RS27s (freelance Interport)

BLI RSD15s (Freelance interport)

Genesis F7s (Freelance Selenian Lines Commission, Commuter)

Athearn P40s (Freelance  SLC)

P1K C-Liners (Freelance SLC)

Among others.

Eventually I'd like to get three more Soo SD60s so that I have two matched sets, and more large Conrail engines, including another SD50 or two, same with more SD70MACs and some C40-8Ws.

Cheers!

Do dummies count?  (Yeah, I know, "only to 10, unless they take their shoes off.")

My duplicate-models are 2 powered F7-A's, and a dummy A and B.  I've got 2 powered GP-9's (P2K), plus one old Athearn dummy, and another non-working unit that needs to be "neutered."  But, my layout isn't big enough to have so many engines, so they mostly sit in boxes down below.

I've got 2 subway trains, too, each of which has 1 powered unit and 3 dummies.  One dummy, normally at the front of the subway train, is the video camera car.  I've thought of installing a camera in the front of a dummy F7 as well.

I don't mind dupicate models, but I try to limit the number of each model per road names to two...

4 RS3 - 2 Reading, 1 D&H, 1 EL

2 RS11 - D&H

2 RS36 - D&H

2 C420 - D&H

4 C424 - 2 Reading (Phase I), 2 D&H (Phase II)

2 GP7 - PRR

1 MP15 - Reading

I have one set of duplicates: two E-R Models RF-16A Sharks, one in BLW demonstrator and one in NYC colors. I tried superdetailing the NYC shell but failed miserably. I found an old Model Power B-unit shell to put onto the NYC's chassis, but it won't fit. I plan on selling both once I get a new shell for the NYC's chassis since they don't fit in with my early 90's layout.

I also have three Athearn BB GP40-2s done differently from each other. One is a Conrail GP40-2, one is a NS GP40 high-hood I plan on stripping and repainting into a fantasy MEC scheme, and a GP40-2 shell I'm working on turning into a GP40-2LW.

At the present time I only have two each of: BLI E7, Stewart FT A, FT B, P1K GP7, BLI NW2. I run GN circa '47-'50 and the 2 E units are on my Empire Builder, the FT's are a 4 unit freight, The 2 Geeps I use separately for locals or MU'd for road switching, and the switchers are used one at each end of the yard and sometimes local industrial work. I have some additional FT's that are not yet converted to DCC that I may do in the future. Enjoy! jc5729 John Colley, Port Townsend, WA

The number of duplicate engines should be in ratio to what your prototype has. So if you model the Virginian in the diesel era you better only have one GE 44 ton and a bunch of FM trainmasters and baby trainmasters since theywere the only diesels they had.  Now I model the PRR and I model the corridor in Philadelphia so I do have 28 GG1's and I need more.  Why?  one for each clocker, one for each name passenger train and two or three for each freight.  So If I have eight freights - four with two each and four with three each that uses up twenty right there.  then there are the 300+ GP9s so I have nine of those and Baldwin switchers were always around Philly. But I don't have any Alcos as they were used elswhere. Now if I modeled the PRR in say Columbus Ohio my roster would be filled with  J1 and Q2 steamers as well as I1 decapods.  The point is if the railroad you model had 83% of one model in your area than 83% of your engines should reflect that.  So if you have ten engines eight should be that class.

Not necessarily, because of different paint schemes and variations.   A specific example is the D&RGW PA fleet.  There were only two ABA sets ordered for the California Zephyr.  However, those locomotives carried 4 different paint schemes through the years.  Three of these were used even if one limits the time period modeled to 1950-1955.  The 4th scheme is picked up in 1961.   This doesn't count the variations in truck color between silver and black.   So if one wants to re-create various famous pictures (scenes) with these locomotives on the layout (such as myself), and one doesn't wish to continually re-paint the models, one needs three times as many locos as the real railroad ever owned.

12 GP40X from Athearn, 7 U25B.

Otherwise, the other 160 locomotives are a mix.

I wasn't talking paint schemes. Those PAs are still PAs.  If you want to break them into a subcategory thats fine but they are still PAs.  My GG1s are green, red, silver single striped and five stripes but they are still GG1s.

I wasn't contending that they weren't.  I was just pointing out that it blows the ratio's of rosters on the model vs. real out of the water.

I dislike 'one-offs'; there have been very few "one-off" diesels but there were a number of "one-off" steamers and they generally did not tend to survive very long. "One-offs" tended to become "roundhouse queens" and the shop forces rationalized that management's decision not to follow up with additional purchases represented a mark of failure of that particular model and, if the beast was a failure, why should they expend good sweat on keeping it running. I know that there are exceptions, of course, but, please, no "The XYZ's number 8479 was a single locomotive and it lasted for 23 years!"

I equally dislike anachronism and I am currently in the process of rationalizing a diesel locomotive fleet; admittedly I have not exercised a great deal of intelligence in my locomotive purchases. Whether I elect to model "now" or elect to model "the 70's" something is going to have to go on the auction block and new purchases made. My personal favorite diesel is the SD40-2; they may very will fit into a "now" environment but I question whether my fleet of SD35s, SD40s, or U30Cs would. On the same token my SD80MACs/SD90MACs, SD60s, C44-9Ws, and dash 8-40s don't fit into a 1970's theme.

Modeling "now" carries with it it's own special hazard. Sooner or later those SD40-2s are going to become obsolete and become subject to trade-in to be replaced by current models. Eric Brooman was astounded when I visited his layout - a "now" layout if there ever was one - during the 2001 national convention that I would recall a 1970's era photo from RMC of an SD7/9 conversion he had done and he informed me that that particular locomotive was in the process of being removed from his roster because of its age; so also did he recently break his all-EMD tradition and purchase his first GE loke. Allen McClelland made a decision to abandon steam so that he could redate his layout to the era allowing the use of Atlas' new SD24s.

I'm not one who wishes to freeze my modeling to, say, 29 September 1986; I have an acquaintance who wants nothing to do with BNSF and, therefore, models the very last day of Uncle John operations. On the other hand either N-Scale or N-Scale Railroading magazine carried a feature awhile back about an individual who still runs Milwaukee freights through the heart of the Northern Rockies behind a fleet of 1990's era diesels.

Not liking "one-offs" I tend to generally purchase my motive power in multiples of twos and threes. I captured a photograph of two Sufferin' Pacific trains, one stabbed in a siding and being passed by a superior train on the main - poetic license there; I'm not going to swear as to what type of  locomotives were on the point of these two trains but the lead units carried sequential numbers such as 3974 and 3975. I once encountered three sequentially numbered Uncle John SDs on the head-end of a freight going through Flagstaff and you could never model those kind of situations with a "one off" locomotive.

I've noticed that, in some cases, a particular model - say, GP30s and GP35s as an instance - will tend to dominate railroading on a particular stretch of track with enough variation to make things interesting. On the other hand, if I were to go with a 1970's theme it might not be unusual for me to run a solid consist of three GP40-2s meeting a train pulled by, say, a GP30-GP9-U25B-GP40-2 lash-up. To generate a meet of that nature would necessitate a motive power roster of at least four GP40-2s. I would like nothing better than to have a diesel fleet with close to a hundred units but I'm not sure of the rationality of that idea without some kind of hidden storage and that, for the moment, is not in my future plans for my new/next layout.

As an aside, I once encountered a transition era layout with about a 25-stall roundhouse with 20 or more of the bays occupied; because of space limitations this roundhouse was pushed against the wall and only the outermost bays were long enough to accomodate complete locomotives; the center bays were, however, "filled" with tenders giving the impression of a roster that could have been double this individual's roster in reality.

Since my RR is set in 1950's (bridge line between the D&RGW in NW New Mexico, and the ATSF in Holbrook), I have (or will, when I get them all) these steam engines (allegedly the first locos for the line, purchased used):

0-6-0T switcher (for industrial district) (and one non-working one, for the repair track next to the enginehouse)

Shays - at least a two-truck and a three-truck, for the mine run (and maybe the sawmill run, if I build that part - haven't decided yet)

2-6-0 Mogul

2-8-2 Mikado

4-6-2 Pacific - for hauling my heavyweight cars

and my (heavily EMD) diesel roster:

SW-7 (Athearn, to be converted into a pseudo-SW-1200)

2 or 3 SW9/1200's

GE 44 ton switcher (and maybe a GE 70 ton switcher)

F7A (Genesis, supposedly leased from SP/SSW, in black widow colors) (or maybe I'll repaint this for my RR)

5-6 GP7 (1 or 2 ATSF - that my RR connects to, 1 SP (recently purchase and not yet painted by my RR's paint shop - and the rest in my RR's colors)

1 GP9m (D&RGW, other RR mine connects to)

Plus several RDC's (couple or three RDC-1, couple or three RDC-3's, possibly an RDC-2 or RDC-4) - my main passenger run motive power.

Of that list, I don't yet have the three truck Shay, the Mikado, the Pacific, or the GE 70 ton, and I need to paint some of the locos for my RR.

So I don't have a huge roster, and more duplication in the diesels than in the steamers.

Whatever I can get.. I have multiple GP40s, 3 to be exact, and also 3 SD40-2s.  I have several SD50-60 types, varying models.  I used to have several Bachmann -840c locos, but none of them stayed running.  Can't wait for the Atlas one to come out, N scale that is.

I have 2 brass Katsumi 20 T shays, the other 9 are all unique (except that they are all brass).  It's fun to double head the 2 Katsumis up my 1.5% grade curved trestle with a string of log cars.

Having just re-started with this Hobby I can say that my first model was the NH I-5 and I like it so much that I just ordered me another I-5.

I also have pre-ordered 3 of the upcoming NYC Mohawks. Smile [:)]

1 B&M Mogul(to pull my Danbury RR Museum cars)

1 PC GP-38

2 Amtrak F9s from different manufacturers and in different paint schemes

1 UP F7a and b unit pairing

1 F3 Sante Fe in the blue and yellow freight livery

I plan to replace all the freight locos with DCC equipped, undecorated ones so I can completely freelance my imaginary time and location.

Let's see now...with the retirement of the last of the Bachmann F units, which originally numbered 4...

1 F7A

1 F7B

2 E7A

2 F40PH (For the Amtrak runs)

2 GP7s

1 RDC

2 Baldwin RF16s (made by dropping Tyco shells onto Bachmann "train set" F unit drives. Couldn't resist these, since Monongahela had a few.)

1 Alco RS3M

As some of you have already noticed, most of my roster consists of 4-axle power. The exceptions are the E units used on my commuter trains. Local freights are run with F units, GPs, or one of each. I'd like a few more Fs and GP7s, but those will have to wait until I get the layout running again. It's been mothballed the past few months as I've been busy with other projects.
