These forums are way too big for Bergie and Mark Voss to have to moderate on a daily basis. They have to rely on us the users to police ourselves. You say it's too late to police yourself???? If you don't who will? There is an opportunity to preview your post before you send it...there is an opportunity to edit it after you post it, and there is an opportunity to delete it after it has posted also. I have used all three of these tools. If you cannot trust yourself to act in a mature enough manner on the forum...don't post...it's that simple.....and if something someone says makes you mad..real mad.....then type your response and walk away for awhile...then come back and reread it once more before you send it...I'm not saying don't have fun but make sure the intent is there if your gonna flame someone...

Because what I'm writing is going in one eye and out the other..here is a post from Bergie during the last big flamex on the Trains side.......

" Imagine my level of aggrevation when I called into the office today from my business trip and heard that there was a problem in the forums.

Listen, this forum is meant for open discussion between rail enthusiasts. These gutless attacks on other users don't solve any problems and they certainly don't create an environment that most of our users - let alone me or anyone else at Kalmbach Publishing Co. - want to see. It's what makes people hate forums. People use forums for constructive conversations about their interests. Not to read mindless banter.

Think before you type. And if you ever see anything inappropriate in these forums, please let me know. It's impossible for us to keep an eye on every single post, so we need your help.

Fuming...
Bergie"

Dear dougal,
Welcome back.

I'm going to sound like an idiot for asking this, but who's "Bergie?"

Dear Railroading_Brit,
What's an IMHO?

Sincerely,
Daniel

I wouldn't say that it's too late. There's still time to sort this out. Maybe it would be best if all involved cooled off a little, apologised to anyone they have offended, and moved on? We can do without arguments - they tend to discourage newbies from getting into a hobby IMHO.

I would suggest that it's very hard to gauge emotion on the web - I didn't think my original post on this issue was offensive, but clearly it was, and I apologise to anyone who was offended by it. Anyway, my suggestion is that we all stop arguing and try to ignore the threads related to the row. If we stop posting on these threads they will eventually disappear, and we can move on, which is probably the best way to solve this IMHO.
Well put my friend.

Emeraldisle's original post was inappropriate for this section of the forum, and my personal view inappropriate period. He has no excuse for not being aware of that. I called him on it, as well I should and would do again. I am weary of such immature behaviors. They waste everyone's time having to wade through nonsense and off topic posts to glean the information the actual model railroaders read this forum for. Were this an actively moderated forum I am quite sure he would have been called to heel and the topic deleted.

I continue to think, and again propose, the managers of this forum create an additional sub-forum dedicated to nonsense and 'harmless fun', where those so inclined and their intellectual peers can amuse themselves to their hearts content without littering the remainder of the forum with junk posts and personality conflicts.

Response to the above, posted today; See below.........
How ever inappropriate it may have been, your response was totally without tact and reflects very accurately on your attitude and smugness when it comes to having a little fun. Obviously, you don't how too, or you think it's beneath you to do so. I feel sorry for you and anyone else like you. At 58 years of age, and 50 years in this hobby, I'm still having fun and the day I stop having fun in this hobby, I'll leave it and never look back. I've encountered people like you many times before and consider you a detriment to this fine hobby. Your arrogance is a put off to all who enjoy this hobby for the pleasure of it. At least "Railroading Brit" had the HINDSITE to realize he had made a mistake and the COURTESY to appologize. You obviously don't have either. You won't have to worry about a future invitation from me, to anything. It won't ever happen. As for DOUGAL, he's welcome to come back over there anytime, there's no hard fellings over yesterday. It was probably bound to happen anyway. All friends have a blowup once in great while. It's what you afterwards that really counts. Hope to see you over on the other side DOUGAL.

Guys, if you really know who got this started, it's the EIGHTBALL that I responed to above. As I said above, I feel sorry for anyone who is that narrow minded and can't enjoy this hobby for the fun of it. Life is too D@%& short, not to have some fun. DOUGAL is a good kid and as I said above, there's no hard feelings over yesterday. I really think there was a lot of hostility pinned up in a lot of people yesterday just waiting for a catylist to bring it out. A lot of hurtful things were said yesterday and I believe it's time to put it behind us. Don't be like RDA1964. If everyone really wants to put "DOS" and "NEVER ENDING STORY" to bed, then lets do it and get past this,,,NOW. We don't need BERGIE getting here and trying to sort this out. We can police ourselves.

look if you ask me it is too late for to police ourselves[:(!]

Why is it when ever I go to the MR forum homepage now, I always picture it being very dark with a fire burning in the back ground?

Come on, folks, any time anyone posts a message saying they're going to leave an internet bulletin board, they never do.

They either come right back after being told "Oh, don't go," or they change user names and come back anyway.

People who actually leave just do it. They don't announce it.

I mean it! Just because I'm posting dosn't mean I staying.

Okay, so let's see--

You're "quiting the forums."

Except that you'll be posting here.

But you "mean it," you're leaving.

Except you're staying.

How in the world are you quitting or leaving if you're continuing to post and staying?

You are trying to start something[:(!]

Look,

He's just a bitter (sorry....fatally annoyed) dude, who got beat up alot as a kid. Now he's trying to get even with his past by picking on kids. Notice if an adult taks a hsot at him, he makes one little ...Ha, ha ...nice try....whatever..then disengages and goes back to starting something with the kids again......

The idea of you leaving now seems strange, considering how much of my crap you managed to put up with in order to come this far. [swg]

Take care

Hold on a second here.

How come it's okay for the kids to post totally-off topic material on the board but you'd like to exclude "rivet counters,' who post material actually associated with the hobby?

Isn't that unfair?
