***Flashwave, sounds like it's Christmas for you there.

***RT, will you have some sort of way to drop in the Diner after the move?

Well, a few smaller items I picked up for the wife arrived today. She was pleased, especially with the W.S. Deer. The other two items included two IMEX trucks:

IMEX Diecast **TRUCKS** ho ScaleFigure her circus/carnival needs a fuel truck to fill the generators with. The crane just happened to be part of the auction. We might repaint them down the road.

Spent an hour or so doing a balancing act to clean some of the barn gutters that had become clogged again. The rain continues here, nice and steady.

CHEERS TO RT! !!!!!

It's time to call out the marching band and make arrangements for a fireworks display!!!!!

The 22nd is just around the corner, but there's plenty of time to plan ahead. I'll dispatch some country ham for the picnic.  Any other contributions will be appreciated.

Anybody live near Columbia, SC I could use help off loading the truck lol. Flip,Fergie what are you 2 sneaking out for its too far for you 2 .

Oh well thought I would ask free pizza ( sorry don't drink but will have coke, pepsi, or what ever type soft drink you want. )

The party will be wild enough in here especially scince its Memorial day weekend.

On a serious note no computor for me as A.T.&T. doesn't offer internet service in that area other than $24.95 dial up I can get net zero for $10.00

May get that once I see how things settle out after I'm there.

Correction: This 2-8-0 will be my wife's second loco, after her DeWitt Clinton (which she adores by the way). I was thinking that train could make a real neat ride (using the smallest degree HO loop available) as the main attraction for her circus/carnival layout. Then this new loco could pull circus/passenger cars to deliver patrons. It's her layout of course, but what do you think?

Sounds like a plan. The Southern green is always a sure bet for special trains. We're lookigna t one to help relieve the Christmas Charity Train

Gee, I wonder how RT's house thing is going... Congrats.

I wish I had my camera. One of the make-do shelves that had the Con Cor NP&S on it gave way, the track went to a nearly impossible grade. But the Con Cor cars have enough free play in the trucks that they're all still on the track. Only 1 derailed form the fall. And their doing an awesome rendition of the Polar Express. Now, to get a GP 40 to be that felxible. Hmm...

Also, Dad and I just recieved a pair of the Athearn Buisness cars. I'm debating articulating them with a baggage car by shortening the body, removing the trucks, and sanding the edges off of the ends so that the screw holes of the baggage car will go on the end screws of the Observation cars. Sort of a Garret Style support. One obs will be a sleeper, the baggae a launry/shower/ the last Obs will be a diner lounge. This will go onto an NMRA Module train, a travelling train show inside Baggae cars.

Finally found an American Orient Express.runs nice, we have another on layaway, so we'll lengthen the train and tack on a second Powered E.

Last night Also gave way for two Ex AHM BL-2s. I say Ex because they were reemotored. The Monon's lights were loose and causing a short, but the Chessie was awesome. Both are directional lighting. And they look like Athearn Motors, which Digitrax sells a DCC kit for.

Lotsa orders coming in at once

Afternoon Gang: Just a quick stop in to mark my place.

Rob that sounds like a great surprise for your wife. It sounds like she needs it.

Jeff sounds like you got what we missed here. That system really didn't get wound up untill it was east of us around Ft.Worth and Dallas.

Tom good lich with the switch change out. Remember that the big boys have to do that once in awhile too.

I'll stop back in later.

***Sue, this loco will be a complete surprise. She has no idea I bought it yet. If she really doesn't like it, I can always sell it off. My guess is she will like it. Besides, if down the road I can steer her towards having a 2 stall engine house, then we can always look at adding a second loco (which she can choose), right? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

***Terry, that Allegheny is gorgeous. Hope you get the bells & whistles worked out to your satisfaction.

Tis' raining here with a chance of thunderstorms later, although nothing severe this time. Mainly a rain producer, which is what we need.

Good Afternoon All

and Greetings from Orphan Knoll, some 300nm NE of St John's somewhere in the Labrador Sea and little wind to boot!

So DICK:How about those Jays?!? They might get somewhere this year one can only hope. Nice to see them beat Boston like the Good Old Days!

Trent: Sorry to hear about your problem but do I detect there may be a faint glimmer of hope? Hopefully this can be worked out and might need third party intervention. It's always good to get an opinion from a party that's not involved.

After a short test run the sound of this loco is very disappointing

The chuff is far too hissy and shallow and the whistle is totally wrong

The bell sound is ok but the rate is way to fast

The Tsunami articulated chuff has this beat by a mile

Hopefully I can find some fixes for this

The loco it's self is smooth as silk and takes 18" radius curves with ease and glides smoothly thru turnouts   it has amazing slow speed performance

I have a 1st generation Allegheny that I installed a Tsunami in and I am very happy with the sound! Well worth the investment. Did the same thing with my Athearn Challenger. Bye Bye MRC as I found that I could only make up so my excuses for the poor sound before I realized I was fooling myself. Anyway just my opinion and Tom hopefully you're DCC compatable if not you'ld better stop drooling as you may short out!

Hello everybody.....

Yes, Dick, MA is quite a beautiful place. I like Cape Cod. Boston for the most part is a very nice city. I don't think the government numbers are fudged. April was only one month. In that one month food prices increased, and energy prices were flat. Some other items decreased. Looking at year-to-year numbers, milk is up 13% for instance. Personally, I think the news media overstates problems with intent to make people feel miserable. So I look at government data instead of the dismal news media reports. Anyhow, are you still growing rhubarb?  Enjoy the classical music.

I see that Tom is insatalling a trnrout this morning.

I have been weathering some passenger cars for the layout lately. I've been doing too much non-mrr stuff latley, and i see others here who can relate to that. Some people actually work in their yards and break rakes, etc.

Happy Model Railroading

Morning all--

Supposed to hit 103 here in the Valley this afternoon.  I looked at the weather map and this big high pressure system balloons all the way up to British Columbia!  Crandell--better trade your jacket for a T-shirt, LOL!

Rob--if that little Consol is dual/mode, which it probably is, it'll work okay on DC, it'll just take a bit more voltage to get everything going.  At least that's how it works with MY dual/modes (which makes it impossible to run one of them with my straight DC'ers.  By the time the dual mode loco gets moving, my DC loco is acting like the winner of the Kentucky Derby!)

Jeff--looks like you got the weather WE could use out here.  But at least you got the power back on in 3 hours.  Every time it goes out around here, it takes our Utility company about two or three days to find out what happened.  And yes--our little corner of the world in Carmichael is always the LAST to get our power back on.  Hope you didn't sustain any damage from that storm, though.  I remember getting caught in a Louisiana storm up around Monroe about 30 years ago--boy, was THAT one a Whopper!

Well, have to replace a Sinohara turnout.  Seems the little dear WARPED on me at the points!  Uninsulated garage, you know--probably a hold-out from last year's heat wave.  I'd try to repair it, but it's the plastic throwbar that decided to arc up into a half-circle.  Went out and got a Peco instead, since the turnout faces the garage door.  See if that works, I'm installing it this morning, before it gets too uncomfortable out there.

Still working on that Gift Certificate the high school guys got me as a Retirement present--went over to Bruce's and picked up some road signs and wooden RR crossings.  I'm just whittling away at the certificate.  Should have my Cripplebush 'Buttes' in another week--hope the heat wave's over by then, because that's going to be a MAJOR project.

Well, out to the garage to install the turnout.  I PROMISE not to curse so loud this time!

Thought that I would stop by for a quick coffee, Chloe.

Lee,  Diesel hit $4.70 yesterday.  I think that we will start shopping around.  Gas is $3.89.

Rob,  You have been busy with your search.  I hope that your wife is choosing the loco.

Good morning....cloudy day here , 52F and showers due off and on right through the weekend with peeks of the sun at times. One thing about the weather in New England, it is never boring, it changes from one minute to the next.

Heading off this morning to get some of the garden plants, time to plant the veggies, and with food prices going through the roof ( inflation at 0.2% for April? BS!!!, the Fed will tell Americans anything and most will believe these BOGUS numbers ) the bigger the garden the better.  We have lost over 700 Dairy farms in New England last year because the price of feed and utilities is killing the farmers. This is very sad guys, and we are going to pay the price for this in many ways.

CNCHARLIE: All the jet streams converge on the Northeast, so we get some wild weather at times. We don't have praire grass areas, we are surprisingly very wooded. I was talking with a guy who we hired years ago from California who had never been East. He had this mental picture of wall to wall connected cities, like the LA area. He was amassed as he flew over MA to Boston and saw nothing but woods and lakes and hills until he got withing 10 miles of Boston. If you go onto Google maps, and open the northeast area, and go to satellite or birds eye view, you will see what I mean.

Off to get plants, see you guys at lunchtime...

WHAT's THIS?? All of a sudden classical music started playing on my PC while writing this reply!!! Hey Bergie is this something new on the Forum or just the Diner. ?????

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! We had some really nasty weather here last night and early this morning. Heavy rain, high winds, hail, etc. To top things off the power went out at four am. The power company got it back on about three and a half hours later.

Good morning all,

Rob, let's see the decoder is worth about $50 so you bought the locomotive for $9, not too bad I would say don't feel guilty.  If you're not going to use the decoder remove it and sell it on the bay I think if you started the auction at $10 you may get $20 to $45 for it after reviewing like sale comparisons.

***CN Charlie & Paul, if this loco can indeed be run on DC (MRC Tech II), that would make me feel much better about having made this purchase. Sent off a quick e-mail to Bachmann.

I personally prefer black locos, but my gut tells me the wife would prefer the "pretty" green version. I have the N scale version (Union Pacific) and like it very much. To be honest, it is the only Bachmann loco I have ever been happy with.

Will have to ask what kind of cars she will want for it. Probably some kind of Circus cars. Whatever she decides is fine with me.

Going to put up my vintage Riv. Mallet and probably one more diesel on the-bay tomorrow. This should more than cover the cost of the wife's new loco. Between her health & family issues, she is having a difficult time these days. Seems to me, it's an ideal time for another surprise gift.

Evening Gang: It's raing here. The radar has it just about finished for us. I don't know how much it rained but maybe a half inch.

Rob I think that loco will run on DC allright. The decorder is most likly a dual type, DCC and DC.

Lee diesel is $4.28 and gasoline is around $3.80. We may have to go back to using horses and mules for the ranch.

Well it's off to bed.

 Good Evening Diners!

Well I've been looking but have been too busy to actually stop by this fine establishment. It's the crazy time of year as we go from winter to a few weeks of spring and then summer so there is a lot of yard work, clean the car, etc., etc.

Tom, I read your post about your Mum and it certainly reminded me of mine who turned 94 this spring. She often calls me worried that she doesn't have enough money, stock market is down and so forth. While she couldn't buy a small country or even a small town she is fine but I guess we should be glad that is all they have to worry about.

JT, sure hope things work out on that mortgage for you. I do financial consulting for small business and I agree with others here who advise against a variable rate mortgage. Rates will go up as the impact of inflation is felt. It hasn't really hit yet but food costs will increase and oil is unlikely to go down. As far as term goes, there is as much danger in going too short as too long as you don't want to have too much of your income going to mortgage payments. I've seen more than one small business get into trouble with cash flow trying to pay off loans too fast. No different for an individual.

Speaking of inflation, gas here is now $4.90 a gallon and for the premium my car says it must have the cost is $5.29 a gallon. Sympathy cards or similar thoughts are appreciated.

Rob, I have a Spectrum Consolidation I bought last November and it is one of my favourite locos. It just looks right and runs great too. While I use DCC I believe it has a dual mode decoder so it should work fine on DC. I have a Southern but in black. Well it was a Southern but it now wears a CN monogram. Actually I picked the Southern version as I wanted the white tires and running boards as CN usually had them painted that way.

Dick, It sounds like your weather is now about like ours. We did have 25 mm of rain on Monday but that has been it for about a month. We don't have a forest fire problem here ( mostly prairie) but in northern Manitoba they sure will. I will get to hear those water bombers a lot as they use an abandoned air force base north of here near where I keep my boat. Love the sound of those radial engines!

Well tomorrow is my LHS night. Have to pick up some ballast I ordered and the gas pumps the service station.

Paul, good luck with the cataract surgery. My mother has had both eyes done and found the worry was the worst part. Recovery was only a couple of days.

Well I had better sign off before I use up an entire page.

Evening,

When I got my ARM I thought I was going to move at the end of the 3rd year, so it was a smart move for me, but I still shopped around for an ARM with limits, a grantee, and a max cap.  So far it's working out.  I would recommend shopping for a 30yr fixed.

Diesel hit $4.50/gal.

I might need to buy a horse to pull my pick-up to and from work, LOL!

I just did something I have buyers remorse for already, only because money is tight. (I'll list some more vintage trains on the-bay tomorrow to compensate) I bought an HO loco for wife and it's DCC. Hope I didn't pay too much for this?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=350056404898&ssPageName=STRK:MEWN:IT&ih=022#ebayphotohosting

Next question, should I convert it to DC or can a real cheap DCC controller be found for it?

Ello ladies and gents.

I'm sitting here being bored out of my mind... Got a signus infection (Pretty sure of it) which is real fun to deal with. So here I am.

Rob:  The first three engines you showed, the mallet, the hiesler, and the shay, are all good. Shay is probably the best. Then the mallet (unless the hiesler is newer, I'm pretty sure its a rivarossi) and then the Hiesler. As for the next two, the 4-4-0 is a great one, that little 0-4-0 is probably not that good, though. As for prices on the Athearn Big Boy... Hows $270 sound? http://www.wholesaletrains.com/NProducts2.asp?Scale=N&Item=bb4884ath

That's $10 more than I paid for my big boy from them.

One rather bored,

Mark

Today is the 20th anniversary of a terrible accident.

A drunk driver drove his truck into a church bus on I-71 near Carrolton, KY killing 27 people.

I see the signs posted each time I drive to Cincinnati from here. It's between Louisville,KY and Cincinnati, OH.

So, please remind others to stay sober while driving.
