Here in Ohio all outside burning is strictly prohibited! (unless you are burning natural refuse). Kind of a dumb way of wording the law.
Suicide by train is a popular past time here; the rails north of I-90 are in my jurisdiction (100 miles of 4 track main) so I get to go on the investigations. Thanksgiving - St Patrick day is my busy season for those. Not a hard investigation unless they use a car.
Forgot to mention; last night my 0-4-0 dockside I've owned since the 70's died in a glorious flash of sparks, smoke, and flames. Very impressive, but sill sad, I guess I need to buy a 0-6-0 to replace it as my shop goat. Investigation is ongoing.

***Paul, Yup, a Shay & a Berk. Only cost me letting go of a vintage Bigboy, Challenger, Juicejack, a bunch of track, and a few cars to do it. That being said, I think the upgrades will be well worth it, especially since my layout will be a small one, at least until art sales pick up. Speaking of which, I've been tucking away a portion of money (including some from my train fund) for a higher end printer, so I can offer prints of ALL my work. Might generate a better trickle of income compared to the few I offer now. Not ready to buy one yet, but close.
***JR, do I take it that the locos at the museum see a lot of run time? Sorry to hear about that Bachmann with the faulty tender trucks, although I'm not entirely surprised. When I finally have a layout, I'll get to test out two newer Bachmann steamers (2-8-0 & 4-8-2) and see just how well they hold up. What I ordered is all N. I forget, you run HO at the museum?

Haven't burned here since the drought started. I'm a little concerned that it is not raining often enough to keep things going. I don't think anyone in the valley pays any attention to burn bans, but having a backyard right up against the forest (timber company land), it is never worth the risk. We've been burying the past year instead.

We get lots of kids at the museum and the four layouts are all timer button actuated so they are going from opening to closing. We get a real good idea on the durability of stock in a hurry. I think we have three O scale Thomas' in rotation now to keep one and a spare running. We have a lifetime supply of broken down Lionel steam and an ever growing yard of Proto diesels in HO. The G scale logging railroad is Bachman powered and is awaiting the return of its' star Shay. Until then we have some Swiss diesel electric shunters doing the pulling. The N locomotives we have are Proto N diesels, a Kato and an Atlas. The Proto N's work best/longest. The Bachman steamer is the only N scale steam runner just now as the 4 - 10 - 2 threw its rods into a tangle. J.R.

Jerry asked about wethering reefers. Yes, I did look at prototype photos of reefers while weathering.
Ryan mentioned the photos I had in WPF, and asked if soemthing was new. The E5's are new ro me, but old engines.
Here's depot I have under construction. It's a replica of Burlington's Highlands station. I'm still working on paint and weathering. The benches were made by gluing scale luber between the cast metal end pieces.
As you can see from the prototype picture, the Zephyrs did not stop at Highlands. They passed by at 90 mph.

Lee I picked up a Proto 2000 w/sound and DCC HO 0-6-0 from Dallas Model Works for about $192 and that included shipping. That was with a member price and it doesn't cost to become a member and the service was good. I haven't tried it yet because I don't have track down but it was the best price I have seen and I have looked at quite a few sites. He has also posted out in the main room from time to time. The detail on it isn't too bad either.

Lee, on your Dockside/yard goat, there's the Spectrum 0-6-0T (a la former MDC/other mfr's.) saddle tanker (which I like and had one in the MDC, and now have the Spectrum version), or the Proto 0-6-0 with the tender (which is pretty sharp, IMHO). Actually, somebody (Model Power?) still makes an 0-4-0, but not sure how well it runs and such.

JEFF: up here, the DNR has instituted a new program for permits. Used to be you went to the local FW and got a 3 day permit.Now, you get a yearlong permit but it's your responsibility to call when you want to burn.The feelings are mixed. It really doesn't matter to me as all we burn is deadwood and cutoffs from my building jobs in the bonfire pit. Last year there was a "watch" and I called to see if we could have a bonfire. The DNR guy asked if we'd be sitting around it telling jokes and sipping beers.I said that's exactly what we'd planned and he gave us the go-ahead. Probably helps the pit's surrounded by 2-3' boulders,though!(with a hose nearby)See ya later!

Afternoon all,
Looks like I'll be visiting the steel plant every day for a week. They have some really old diesel switchers running in that plant and it's very impressive to watch the workers service these older units. I would have to flip through some of my pictures to find the correct class of locomotives they operate down there.
I do have another 0-4-0 on the shelf and I have 14 new electric motors. I might be able to rebuild this dockside, but the locomotives future may be short lived when I switch to DCC. The one that caught fire is a Rivarossi, and seems most of the damage was inside the cab. Regardless of what happens with it I'm sure after 30+ years I got my monies worth out of it. I'll bet I paid no more than $10 for it.

Ryan, I have a picture of a flatten tank car somewhere. They steam pressure washed the inside of the car and it imploded. I can't remember the cause; I think they closed all the hatches after it was washed.
Another beautiful day here today, really getting things done early this year, and we have another 7 days of good weather according to the weathermen. Still at 72F here at 6:30pm.
We have every fire truck out on fire calls!! One company is in the next town fighting a brush fire, a second company is in the northern part of town with another fire, and company three is fighting a fire across the CSX mainline. The scanner just went off and it was the Amtrak Dispatcher wanting to know how long the passenger train was going to be delayed....30 minutes was the answer. If there is one more fire, we may need Jeff to head north!!!!!

Evening Gang: I put a washer in between the truck bolster and the body on the diesel this afternoon. I then took it on a run around the track and now derailments. This morning I took the tractor with the grapple over and moved a pile of brush that had been dumped at Rio Vista. I had all the brush hidden and things looked pretty good. So I'm going around the track with the diesel and someone had dumped a big pile of brush in the grass area between the tunnel cut and Nussbaum Gorge right along the main. There will be a group of folks from Terry's nursing home coming out tomorrow so I have to get the tractor and go over first thing in the morning and clean that up. I want the railroad to look it's best. I guess that 30 years at Six Flags is still affecting me.
RT I hope that you hear something soon. It's hard waiting.
Well I guess I'll head for bed. For the information of the ORF watchdogs I took a couple of breaks today and did some reading. I picked up David McCollogue's 1776 the other day and am deep into it. A really good book if anyone is interested in the Revolutionary War.

***Jim, I was a regular at most of the top wildlife art shows from coast to coast for many years, but stopped doing them soon after moving to GA.. I sell some originals through WildWings and of course out of the studio. Just not the quantity of sales I made prior to 9/11. This printer will allow me to make smaller affordable, quality prints of more painting, without investing in large quantity runs. In other words, print them as they are purchased.
***Paul, folks from a nursing home or assisted living facility? Would like to hear more about it and how that works out for everyone. You're a good soul.
Funny news: My wife took her dad "golfing" today. By the 7th hole, following many complaints, management showed up and escorted them back to the main building. Wife didn't know any golf etiquette and was driving right onto the greens where her dad would hit the ball with his cane. The happy ending is they received a private tour (from a most kind commercial Pilot who saw their plight) of the entire course and learned more about golf than they ever wanted to know. And they talked all about Lockheed planes (my FIL was an engineer for them). The day may have cost my wife over $100., but the joy it brought into her dad's life was indeed priceless. Betcha they were the talk around many a dinner table tonight.

Gav, good to hear some of this nice weather we were having today. Hope it stays nice for you for a while. We're supposed to have chances of (very) scattered/isolated showers the next 2-3 days, then clear up some by the weekend. On your question, are you talking about a crossing, or like the guard rails in the middle of a bridge or trestle?

Terry, (as I posted in your topic) those trees look great, but I'm not so sure that I could get nearly as good of results. You had excellent results, I'd say.
Garry, that magnetic rig is very helpful on my kitbash. I noticed that on one side of the (back/hidden) wall (where the 'entrance' doors are) the column at the corner (which I had to glue on, since I trimmed that side from five window-widths to three) needs a reinforcing piece of sheet styrene on the inside. Guess I thought that the cement would be enough for a butt joint (wrong!)...

44F and clear this morning with the high in the mid 70's. Spent last evening at the museum and got the cork road bed down underneath the Ross O - gauge mainline. Next week I'll try getting the track glued to the cork.
Gavin - for DCC you only need isolators where you have a wye or reverse loop but many of us have the track broken into blocks anyway and run seperate circuit breakers for each block so that a short in one block doesn't shut down the whole operation. I have my layout divided into 4 power districts or blocks plus a separate block for the reverse loop which has its' own breaker. When I get my yards buuilt I'll probably add a block for each since they have lots of turnouts and that is where most of the shorts originate. Hope that helps.
Paul - so why did the spacer cure the derailments? Was the truck fouling the cab?

Gav, to answer your question about parallel tracks with crossing connections, only if there is a reverse loop will you have to put in an isolation gap. From your description it sounds like no gap is required, see my drawing below:

Good morning everyone, 68F here already at 10am, headed for 80F by 3:30pm, and VERY dry. We have a Class IV fire danger day today according to Charlton Fire Tower radio. I received a call from the George Bush last night, he wants to make sure that the $600 economy boost checks that most of us will receive in May, stays in the U.S., so he wants us to buy MRR stuff that is made in the U.S. I guess that means Branchline, ME, Kadee, most of Woodland Scenics...can you guys name more stuff?
JIM: Not carelessness Jim for most of the brush fires here. It is a combination of two things: Kids are home this week for Spring vacation, and, it is extremely DRY here with class IV fire danger. I got my SS check today so thank you for working this week.

Maybe, but pretty early for them to be up on vacation week. Owner doing some maintenance ? Ahhhhhhh top cause.

Didn't get to the MRR stuff last night - got groceries instead (after eating something for dinner first...). May get that bracing attached to the inside of the Roberts kitbash wall tonight, and then work on painting it over the weekend.
Rob, that sounds like an additional 'product line' if you get a good printer and do that with the pictures. Go for it!
Gav, glad you got an answer on your question. When it comes to electrical questions beyond 'what wire goes to where?', I'm clueless.
Waiting on my rustic stonewall (resin) castings to arrive. Bought them off that e-auction site, and hope they'll be here by the weekend. May be starting on painting those over the weekend, along with my kitbash.
