Rob, great to hear that you got to try out your BigBoy. Yeah, I'm sure your wife will love the sound on HO. Some of my fellow MRR club members have sound on their diesels, and it's excellent. Of course, once you get a few running at the same time, you discover why a small train room has its disadvantages. Wink [;)]

Afternoon, Flo - I'll have some tacos, since Tom's buying - and a RBF, please. Dinner [dinner]Big Smile [:D] Thanks!

Tom, good to hear you got a reprieve from the smoke (even if only for a while). As for the thunderstorms our way, I think God's been quite kind to Cape G. (as opposed to poor Indiana and Ohio lately).

Lee, it wasn't me that had the mice - I was responding to Paul's comment that he had to rescue Mary Ann from a mouse-set fire. Shock [:O] But I don't think I could have cats; I'd always wonder if the cat had been walking through the kitty litter and then across the kitchen counter where I was going to fix my dinner that night. (Ugh! Dead [xx(] Thumbs Down [tdn]) Cats are okay, just not in my home, thanks. Give me a dog anytime (but not one that can jump very high...).Wink [;)] Lee, you'd better watch out for your insurance rates now, with teenage drivers (X2) in the home. You'll be having to wonder on the weekends if you have a car, before you can head for the LHS. Whistling [:-^]

Oh, in case Gav hasn't already answered your question, he lives in Bristol, county of Bristol, England. But I'd have to go look up a map or fire up Google Earth to see whereabouts that is in England...

What, Fergie? The [censored] icon is gone? Dag-nab-it, SoapBox [soapbox] if it isn't gone! But as someone else reminded you - what about your layout? If it's raining, you should be inside working on that until the sun comes out again (and then you could stain the deck), right? Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Hope you get a few days stretch of clear, dry weather to finish up the deck, though.

Inch, you might be about right on you and Jerry being in a test market. I think almost all of the storms that have come through lately were heading up around your way (except for those heading more toward Garry, RT, or Rob's direction, that is). Shock [:O] Hardest part is, after you get a bunch of those rains, the crabgrass in the lawn thinks it has to grow a bunch, and then it's mowing time again! Confused [%-)] Hmm.... Oh, I think Garry's about right on the LHS'es - stop by Chuck's in Marion, IL, and you won't be disappointed by his selection of stuff. He doesn't quite have one or two of everything in the Walthers catalog, but close. Yeah!! [yeah]

Rob, from your description of that 'Hole' you have, you may not need to worry about having a place to put the trash for a long, long while. Whistling [:-^]

Dick, almost all of the property that got water (about 4 to 6 feet max.) when the pump went off, was commercial. There were maybe one or two home garages that got water up in them (there are a couple of homes, but they have garages on the lower level. They just didn't have much time to get the stuff out of the garage, was all). And actually, there aren't that many business on the 'Water Street' (actually that *is* its name, so it was appropriately named way back when. On your question, I'd be saying you had very thick fog; am I right? We get a few days like that during the year, or even some where the temp drops off at night and the water is warmer than the air by morning.

RT, I actually think I may have one whole year of MR that is a duplicate set. I'll see if I can fit them all in a USPS box. Will need to swing by the P.O. on Monday and get one. Email me your (new) shipping address, if you would.

Went by Hobby Lobby this afternoon and picked up some WS figures - their Pedestrians, and I think the other was the Baseball Players I set. Seeing how nice Jeff's park looked, got me wanting a ballfield, too.

About time for me to finish up my tacos and get another helping. Hey, Flo! Another plate on Tom's tab! Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg] Everyone remember to get in some MRR'ing this weekend.Thumbs Up [tup]

Blessings and prayers,

in a UNION PACIFIC BIGBOY mug. Chef [C=:-)]For dinner, grilled scallops with mango, onions & wild rice, please & thanks.

***Jerry, is that a static or operating rig behind the penn car? Always liked those things and hope to have one on a layout one day.

Wife & I have been running errands all day. Finally had a chance to try out the Bigboy. After much frustration (and this is in DC mode), it finally started operating as it is suppose to. I suspect the forward gears had a spec of something in them or just needed to break free. Now all seems well. Will run it for awhile when there are no storms about, just to make sure it's a keeper. The detail is excellent. IMO, the sound is more of a novelty, but a nice first step for N scale. Wife came down to see it run and said she would need her reading glasses to see it.Laugh [(-D] Then she asked about sound for her HO models and I assured her it was not only available, but that she would be thrilled with the quality available in her scale. (right?)

Morning all from SmokyCal--

We have at last count, over 200,000 acres of Northern California burning from Big Sur in the south to Trinity County near the Oregon border.  We've got crews coming in from as far away as Florida to help fight them, our Guv has asked that Texan in the White House to declare California a Federal Disaster Area.

There's good news and bad news--the smoke has lifted from the Valley enough so that I don't have to go outside with a face mask, and we have a Delta Breeze that is keeping the smoke high above the Valley this morning.  The bad news is that another series of thunderstorms is supposed to roll up the Sierras from the south today and tomorrow.  Went outside this morning and there are actually PATCHES of cloudy sky overhead.

And to top it off, in the "Letters to the Editor" section of the Sacramento BEE this morning, one of the denizens of my home town--Nevada City--wrote in to let everyone know that the fires are God's way of telling California that He's angry at us for letting the State Supreme Court rule on the Gay Marriage situation.  Hm.  So how come Vermont and Canada aren't on fire?

I mentioned that I was suffering from "Cabin Fever" in another post, and Flashwave answered me, letting me know he was sorry that my house had a cold.  Funny guy, that Flash! Tongue [:P]

Jeff:  Next time I'm in Louisiana, I'll bring my 'creeper,' LOL!  That little puppy really works for those hard to get spots.  But I'm finding out that you really have to CLEAN under the layout to get the base-legs in.  Those things are LONG!  Which is a Good Thing, otherwise I'd be taking a header into the scenery.

For my friends in the Midwest:  I hope Tornado Season is over, and QUICK!  This has not turned out to be a good summer for ANYONE!

Well, I'm going to have another cup of coffee (Peet's French Roast, thank you) and then arm myself with Sculptamold and Cripplebush Rubber Rocks and go out and attack the Buttes this morning--FINALLY!!  Just hope the Delta Breezes keep up at least until noon and keeps the smoke high in the sky and not on the ground.  Of course it'll be interesting next weekend to see how many of we Californians actually take the Guv's advice to heart and don't do any fireworks.  Not too many, I'm afraid---Sigh [sigh]

Best to all, prayers for those in need.

Wish I knew somebody here in the columbia area but I don't.e@yahoo.com

RT, how old would they like those mags? Think I have some older ones (couple or so), one that's Model Trains (not sure if it pre-dated MR, or not) and I forget the other one's title. I'll have to see how old my oldest MR's are (and copy any useful articles if any of those would be likely candidates). Should be able to check my mags out tomorrow and email you what I have. So, we now have BridgeTom in California spreading the word on MRR'ing to the young'uns in his neighborhood, all our teenage MRR'ers in the middle who stop by the Diner, and you in SC keeping the vintage MRR'ers still 'rolling' on their way with MR and other mags. Neat! Thumbs Up [tup]

Good Morning.....

What? Did you see that? Dick was trying to sneak Rhubarb to Duke in the bottom of his post! Hmm. ...Bet you didn't think I'd notice, Gray Sly Fox.

Inch Said: "Mother decided we're going camping at Ft Massack state park [Metropolis IL] next weekend. If I remember right it's not far your area. It's been 30 year since I was round there and Mother's never been. Is there any LHS's round there or in Paducah?  " ..... >> I would strongly suggest stopping in Marion,IL at Chuck's depot. I suggest calling ahead for normal hours or to scheduale a visit off hours. There are no LHS's left in paducah. Please consider visiting layouts here (mine, Gus's (ICRR), and Dan's (UPRR). We're about an hour from the I-24 bridge over Ohio River. At this location we have a National Park (Land Between the lakes), three large KY state parks, Numerous privately owned RV parks, and two large lakes.

Lee... Now it's two kids driving. They grow up too fast, right/

Fergie ............What's this about staining the deck?  Non-mrr stuff is not allowed. How's the layout?

Rob ... You mentioned moral support, and you are certainly welcome. The Diner proves that model railoraders are typically good people.

Jeff .... The park scene looks better than great. It's outstanding. I would suggest hiding the AC unit with a temporary backdrop for the pictures.

Happy Model Railroading

Good morning!!! The weather here today? Lets see how weatherwise you guys are: The temp is 69F, the Dew Point (DP ) is 69F and the Relative Humidity ( RH ) is 100%. What conditions do we have here in New England this morning? Hint: The sun is not out, and we look like most days in London. Now I know what it is like in Sue's neck of the woods in the Northwest.

FERGIE: WHAT???  WHAT?  You are staining a deck with the RH at 100% ???? Tsk, tsk, doesn't the instruction on that can say " the weather must be dry for 48 hours"?? Tsk, tsk. READ THE DIRECTIONS !!  Ohhhhhhhhhh, Lisa said get it done now.

JOHN,LUC: Ok , we see you guys at the corner table, lets get up front and tell us what you have been up too.

JIM: Power failure, pumps stop, city floods because Mississippi river is higher than the city...Niccccccccccceeeeeeeeee. I lived along a stream bank as a kid for 18 years, that was enough for me, I made sure I built my home on a hill, the river is 300 feet below me, if it ever gets this high I don't want to be around here. No flood insurance required thank you.

JEFF: Is your fence made from wood, or is it metal?

MIKE: With all those storms and heavy flooding rains, have you been able to get your garden planted? I sure hope so, with food prices going through the roof, this is going to be costly year for staples. I was reading where all the terrible floods in the upper mid west have destroyed over 400 million bushels of corn and grain...this is not good!!

TOM: What's the word from CA this morning on all those fires, making any progress?

ED: I found another door in the garage loft, flat panel, do you need another for an expansion of your layout?

DUKE: Rhubarb is still being picked, we have had enough rain to keep it coming but not for long. I hear the big train show is out your way this summer, all the new products being introduced by the major vendors.

I smell coffee, talk later guys,

Dick If you do what you always did, you'll get what you always got!! Learn from the mistakes of others, trust me........you can't live long enough to make all the mistakes yourself, I tried !! A strongin a UNION PACIFIC mug, please & thanks.

Yesterday I found some more future trees (twigs) around the barnyard. I wasn't thinking when I had the clean up crew take out the dead & dying shrubs above the little carport (slab with rock wall). Thats where I had found the endless supply of model tree armatures. If I had been paying attention, I would have had them leave those shrubs by the edge of the back fence so I could pick through them. No biggie though, around a farm there are always other plants to pull from. That was a huge supply of them lost though.

When the wife & I walked out back to see how big a trash hole the fella had dug with the trackhoe, we new we had better secure the rest of the fence around that area to keep the critters away. We have named it "He!! Hole", because it must reach about halfway there.Evil [}:)]Laugh [(-D] Won't need another for perhaps 10 years. My word it's BIG.

Thanks for all the moral support folks. It has been most appreciated.

Mornin, coffee n a sweet roll please Zoe.

Had a storm come through last evening, dumped 1.9 inches of rain, got most of it in 30 minutes. We had some flooding, but nothing bad this time. A chance of more storms forecast for today.

FLASH,

Sorry to hear bout your dad. Ya'll be getten special thoughts from up in here.

PC,

You folks seemed to have caught the worst of the damage with the tornados. We some how managed to miss that part. The lighting pics look like here that night. Had so much of it, we didn't need a light to get around the house when the electric was out.

On the flooding FEMA finally showed up in Lawrence county yesterday. Now maybe they can get some help. Clyde was down thru there this week and said it stunk like rotten milk and sewer all along there.

ROB,

Hope the mortgage company gets in gear, so ya'll came get started afore winter sets in.

RT, I gave all my extra MR mags away already or I'd send them to ya.

TOM,

Hope they can get those fires under control out your way.

FERGIE,

I'm with you on the rain. I think they're using me n Jerry here for market testing.

GARRY,

Mother decided we're going camping at Ft Massack state park [Metropolis IL] next weekend. If I remember right it's not far your area. It's been 30 year since I was round there and Mother's never been. Is there any LHS's round there or in Paducah?

Best gets round ta chores, We've got kids today so they'll take longer. Hope ya'll has a gooden and thoughts for all those in need.

Good morning,

We only got a very small amount of rain and lightning last night; I guess the guys in the western Great Lakes are keeping all the bad weather to themselves.

Boy am I getting old, my son just bought himself a truck last week, now both of my kids are driving.

Jim, buy a couple of house cats.  Once the mice smell you have cats in the house they won't even bother trying to get in.

I saw the smoke you guys in So Cal are dealing with, I lived through the same thing when Mexico was on fire and I was stationed in Corpus Christi, TX.  I think yours is worse than that.

Flash, we had a very odd cloud here Thursday afternoon; it looked like a round pyramid of tube shaped clouds.  As always I didn't have my camera.   Thursday I was working out of Ashtabula and you should see the coal trains stacked up waiting to send coal to Canada and the upper Great Lakes it was very impressive.  I need to run up there with my camera and just hang out one day.

Rob that is good news I hope the INS and building commence without delay!  I hope the Big Boy runs well for you.  I found smoke shields in the Walt... catalog for BB's and Challengers.

Gav, um you are in London right?  Every time I set foot in that town it's raining, I didn't know you guys had sunny weather.

I guess I had top honors with yesterdays post,  maybe some pancakes and coffee all around is in order for you guys this morning, while I proof some nice fat storm clouds for Dick.

Paul, it's probably good that you got to go to the movies, with all that work. You deserve a break, I'd say. That's one of those strange things with the mouse trying to cook its own meal like that...Whistling [:-^]

Hey, Max sounds like an all right guy. You and Mary Ann just enjoy your mini-vacation (once you have all the mouse traps set).

And if I could send you some rain, I'd vote for it - for you and for Tom in Calif. both.

Blessings and a well-deserved rest for you tonight,

I think that Arnold needs to think a little harder about the fireworks and just put out the ban. If nothing else the mony from violators will help pay for the fire fighting. If anyone gets caught starting a fire they should be made to go around and clean up for preople that get burned out.

Well It's time for bed.

Good Night All

PS Anyone that can send us some rain PLEASE DO. We're getting dry here.

I'd prefer to not have rain. I like the sunny weather. And thanks for the compliment.

Evenin', Chloe - those ribs everyone's been getting look mighty good; I believe I'll have a plate of those, too! And a Dr. Pepper, please. Thanks, Sawyer (Packer#1)Dinner [dinner]

Sawyer (Packer#1), you have a pretty fair-sized layout in your pics. Looks good! Thumbs Up [tup] Careful what you wish for on that rain, though - you might get that - and then some!

PC, I don't know about your R&D department there; looks like they're getting kind of 'wild and windy'...Whistling [:-^] Thanks for explaining the fabrication, Quality Assurance, and the distribution departments there. Smile,Wink, & Grin [swg]

Gav, I don't know that Dick and our Nova Scotian crew can do much about what you get weather-wise - those storms have a lot of water in the pond that they can 'borrow' on the way over to you. So no promises. You could maybe borrow that Canadian high pressure dome from Luc, DerJohn & Fergie for a bit to keep the storms away. Oops [oops] If we could figure how to get the rain clouds to bypass dropping a load on you, and come back around the long way to Tom's area and wet down those dry areas up in the hills above him, we'd have it lined out.

Last night, we had a lightning strike downtown that cut out power for a pumping station (on the 'dry' side of the riverwall), and for a few minutes - until they got it back running again - some downtown buildings got some water in them (coming up through the sewer/water drains, I guess). They were saying on the news that most river flood districts don't have power backup on their pumping stations.

We haven't had much in our area tonight, though there was a tornado warning for a couple of the Illinois counties north of us and across the Miss. River, around 6:00-6:30 p.m. or so. I think they're talking about possibly scattered showers tomorrow. It does seem like usually around July 4th, we get rain, though not usually on the 4th. We'll see, I guess. Speaking of Missouri weather, another levee broke up around Winfield, MO (North a little from St. Louis) today, which the news folks said was at least partly due to muskrats digging holes or nests in the levees (and therefore weakening them). No 'Muskrat Love' for the critters up there, I'm sure. Whistling [:-^]

Okay guys, I need to request a favor from one or two of you and that is a couple of old model railroading mags for a couple of vets in the VA hospital here in columbia . I've been taking some of my clasic toy trains mags in but a couple have asked for something in the ho or n scale line if I knew anybody willing to give up a couple.

Rob, hope you and Barbara get a good deal from your mortgage people. Got the revised plans yet (with the 'improved' MRR'ing space)? Wink [;)] Enjoy testing out that BigBoy once you get to the post office, and good to hear your insurance check is on the way, too. Yeah!! [yeah]

Johnboy, better be careful - from what Dick's saying, those polar bears may want to come visit you and camp out in your icemaker! Wink [;)] That, or maybe some of them will like the water and want to buy your boat? (Or was it CN Charlie that wanted to sell his boat up that way?)

Think I forgot to mention the other night, but I bought some plastic bins with lids to put my MRR'ing stuff in (instead of the cardboard boxes I'm currently using). I'll pick up a few every month or payday until I have things transferred over.

George, that does sound like a good season for your team, and nothing to be too ashamed about. Hope you had an enjoyable dinner out. If all the sports don't keep you young, they'll likely keep you pretty healthy!

Back to my ribs now. Tomorrow will be some straightening (and looking for my oldest model railroad mags), laundry, prepare for Sunday's lesson and preview the DivorceCare lesson on the DVD for that, and (hopefully) start some benchwork for the layout addition. If I get the dining room table cleared, I'll see about putting some kits together, too.

Blessings and prayers for a good night's rest (and nothing too fancy with any twists or turns to the weather) for all of you Diners,

Jim in Cape Girardeau

My baseball season ended a few weeks ago (or a month). We got down by a huge defiecit so we couldn't come back because I stunk it up at third. I had I don't how many errors. I finally got moved to left field.
