Morning all, and a happy, safe and sane ('sane' is optional) Fourth of July to everyone.
Overcast here today in SmokyCal, but it's clouds, not smoke. We're getting a rare Low pressure system that waltzed in off of the Pacific, so hopefully it will help with the fires. Big Sur has been completely evacuated, it looks as if some landmarks are going to be burned--Nepenthe, the Henry Miller House, and some other favorite vacation stops I used to love. Terrible loss of wildlife--the deer and other large animals have noplace to go except toward the ocean, and unfortunately there's no way to get down there--huge sheer cliffs. News reports say that Highway 1, which is closed to traffic, is littered with animal carcasses. According to the news, most of the other fires in the northern part of the state are either under control or close to it, but Big Sur and the fire to the south in Santa Barbara are raging TOTALLY out of control. 81,000 acres so far in Big Sur and close to 60,000 in Santa Barbara.
True to form, the neighbors down at the end of the block set off their 3rd of July fireworks last night, and the rest of us all manned our garden hoses just in case and shook our heads. Those neighbors are totally clueless, anyway, so we kind of expected it. Lots of booms and smoke, but no roofs caught on fire, at least. Tonight should be fun. Suuuuuure!!
Well, that's it from here. Going to work on the Buttes today (STILL, LOL!), then cook up some beef ribs for dinner--INSIDE. No way am I going to 'Weber' outside today.
Watched MEN WITH BROOMS in honor of Canada Day--HILARIOUSLY funny movie--, today I'll watch DRUMS ALONG THE MOHAWK in honor of the 4th.
Have a great Fourth, all. Jeff, I hope you don't get any fire-calls.
Best to all and prayers to those in need.

DOH! I knew that ... I should I have 4 Sante Fe's and a Texas already
Yes CN Charlie it will be DCC Sound and hopefully shake the ground beneath it!
Yes Paul Brass is sweet but truly expensive but i had the money at the time and the CFO's blessings! I haven't decided what to get her but she was heard mentioning a trip to Napa Valley some time.
Tom: Stop your drooling as the last time you did that you shorted yourself out on DCC and it was ugly (never knew a man's tongue could go in so many directions at once and have blinking eyelids for ditchlights) So now that I have to tear the MESS apart and widen it when are ya coming to make the mountains? Excellent job on the scenery by the way. Excellent!
Flash: Hope your Dad's appointment goes well. We are all pulling for ya!
Attaboy: Congrats! I've already talked with Flo to make arrangements for your wake Stag Party! Dick is bringing the supplies.
Lee: We appreciate the Singing of Oh Canada, however... It was picked up by our Sonar out here and we mistook it for Biologics mating! You may see a pod of Orcas on your door steps within the next week!!

Afternoon all,
Had a busy 2 days down in the train room; the paint shop has painted 12 gondolas, 1 refrigerator car, and 1 caboose in L.S.&W red and the MOW department has spread ballast throughout the yard tracks. I hope to get enough sheets of legends completed to start lettering the cars.

Holy cow, Lee--you got all THAT done in two days and all I've accomplished is getting up to my elbows in Sculptamold for a foot and a half of rockwork! Boy, do I envy you. It'll sure be nice to get out of the scenery and get back into the TRAINS, LOL!
Fergie: What's the minimum radius on that beauty you just got? Does it mean Major Rebuilding on the MESS? Yes, I'm still drooling, but I haven't shorted anything out--YET! . Still trying to figure out how I could 'appropriate' one of those beauties for the Yuba River Sub. Hmm--how about it accidentally wandered down from B.C. and got kidnapped? Now THERE'S a possibility.
OOPS!! I'm top again. Okay, barbecue's on me today, gang.
Again happy 4th..... I took this photo back when the bicentenail was being celebrated.
Be Patriotic!
Happy Fourth Everyone: The girls went to watch the fire works last night. The 2yr old has trouble telling the difference between fireworks, fire crackers, and fire trucks. Anyway they all had a good time.
JimCG that's the charge for bailing. Because of the fuel prices it pays to check before having it done. I spent $180 for fuel to get our hay done.
I went over to the track to run my diesel today. A friend of mine worked on it and said that it was fixed. He ran it around the track ( that's almost 2 miles ) and it ran fine for him. That was a couple of days ago. Today it was surging again. I managed to get around the track but it wasn't a real good run. Besides that there were quite a few sun kinks in teh track and one big hump. This is all caused by the heat and expansion of the rail. Terry insits on using a ballast that locks the track in place, no movement at all. The pressure of the expansion will find a weak spot and ether kink or hump. To top all that off the turntable is rubbing hard against the transion to the transfere table. I like to have had to get a jack out to get it loose. The joys of really large scale in the outdoors.
I'm going to get going and see what I can get done.
See you all later.
"BUMP" everyone's busy this 4th of July I see.
in a SOUTHERN mug, please & thank you.
***Paul, I think the troubles with your outdoor scale would still be worth the fun when everything is running right.
Well, this morning on the first pitch fork full of old hay I was going to use to hold seed down in a newly scraped area of the pony pasture, my good ankle went out with an audible tearing, crunching sound. Hopped back up to the house on my left leg (already fried that ankle years ago as an athlete and still twist it often, but it's already stretched out). Have been icing & wrapping it most of the day since. Wife wanted me to have it looked at (swollen & turning pretty), but I already know what I did (ligaments ond/or cartilage tears) and know the routine. Casting it is a waste of time and surgery is out of the question right now. Messed it up good, but if I can keep it cold enough and wrapped well, I should be able to funtion enough for now. Ticks me off though. Dang!
Well, going to keep icing it and watch TV tonight. Take care, all. And once more, Thank You to all who Serve our Country!
Rob
Happy July 4th to all Diners to the South!!
We didn't actually celebrate the 4th but today we did go out for a great lunch to celebrate our anniversary that was yesterday. There is a great outdoor patio on the river at a local restaurant and we did have a great lunch--smoked salmon with capers to start followed by sauteed tenderloin with mushrooms and peppers on mashed potatoes. We both had a maple creme brulee for desert. We did celebrate yesterday as my wife is now volunteering on Thursdays at the restaurant where she took her cooking course last winter. She has always wanted to get "backstage" in a French restaurant and so her wish has now come though.
It was warm here today, about 82F and it is supposed to hit 85F tomorrow. I'm sure Jeff would probably think it is cool but for us it is hot.
I did manage to get the boat all set up on Wednesday. It took me close to 4 hours to do it but now we are ready to actually do some sailing which I have planned for Tuesday as I'm on holidays. We don't like to go on weekends anymore as the town in their infinite wisdom decided to put a bandstand right on the harbour front so we get bombarded with loud rock or country music whether we like it or not. Besides 85 is too hot for the dogs.
Tom, I was truly sorry to hear about your cat, Lowell, and can sympathize as we have 2 -13 year old Westies. One is doing great but little Jamie has an enlarged heart so I'm not too hopeful for the future for him. Mind you he has done far better than our vet ever thought as he's had diabetes for 7 years. I do think you owe it to yourself to get a nice brass 2-10-4 and I see that Sunset has a lovely CPR Selkirk that could easily have gotten lost in B.C. and wound up in California. It would probably help as they say "take your mind off things" so it could be called therapy. I have a glass of red wine with my dinner strictly for health therapy as it is good for the heart.
Rob, good news on the re-build front and hopefully your builder can start soon.
It's getting near time for East Enders so I will have to sign off shortly. I'm sure Gav is familiar with that programme. We are far behind the shows in the U.K. as we are still in 2002 and we falling further behind. I know it is really a soap but one side benefit is that we have no problem at all understanding accents and Brit terminology when we visit, as my Dad used to call it, the Old Country.
See you soon,
CN Charlie
Rob--
TAKE CARE OF THAT ANKLE!!! Oboy, do I feel for you--I have a tweaker of a right one from an old high-school Track injury, and every now and then --even now at my tender age of 68--it lets me know that at 16 I tried too far for the Long Jump (it was called a Broad Jump back then--wonder if the word "Broad" was changed because it started sounding 'sexist'?). At any rate, stay off that puppy for a week or two, ice it up good and use an Ace bandage. A TIGHT Ace bandage. Can the hay wait? Can you rent a Baler? Whatever, be VERY careful of it. Pain is NOT fun!!
Charlie: Thanks so much for your concern about Lowell--actually, the past few days he's been eating better--I found a veteranary cat tuna that has very little phospate content and he seems to really like it. I notice he's not drinking NEAR as much water as he has been the past couple of weeks. If I can get some more weight on him, maybe he'll at least stabilize. He was actually active today, tore the HELL out of a cardboard box I happened to have laying around. We'll see. I'd like to keep him as long as I can--the vet says that sometimes a cat can live out a normal life even despite the kidney thing. We'll see. Sorry to hear about the Westie, but I've found out that our furry friends can be INCREDIBLY resiliant with love, affection and the right diet. Let's both pray, okay?
Hello Diners, just stopped in for a quick root beer with you to celebrate your big holiday. Don't know where my head was yesterday as I wished you all well then. Messed up calander I guess, It couldn't be "oldtimers" could it?? Lol.
ROB: I'm, really disappointed in you. You have had your three problems already this year. That is your share. I didn't expect you to take on another. However, our thoughts and prayers are with you and your wife. Hopefully it will all be smooth sailing now. Take good care of that ankle and don't be over-doing it. If I was closer I would sure love to give you a hand.
CN Charlie: Glad to hear the vessel is ready for the water. If you get our weather that we had today you won't want to have those dogs out . It was 91 here today. And the whole north of our Province is burning up as well. We have fire fighters in here from Ontario, Quebec and the Yukon to try and battle them. You would think that we were in California up there.
FERGIE: Well you old salt, how long are you gone for this time? They sure don't give you much time between sailings. Glad to hear the garden is coming along. We have been re-working some of our back yard as well.
R.J.: You sure sound more relaxed, the new job and home must be quite satisfying for you. We all think you deserve it too.
SUE: It was good to hear from you again, it has been awhile. I thought you got lost and was up that fancy creek that you built, without a paddle.
JEFF: That truly is a classy paint scheme that KCS has chosen. Gives the impression that the car is wearing a tux.
MOUNTAIN TOP WHITE: That is a class act you are preforming on those buttes. I just wish you had turned that section of your layout around so that you could close the door and keep the heat and pollen out, and yet still work on it..
Finally figured out how to get all that darn McAfee out of my computer. It had really screwed things up and slowed things down. I had tried to remove it a couple of months ago and it initially showed that it was gone. But my son came over and got into the inereds of it and had to download a special file to remove the rest of it. It is like a cancer and worms it's way into everything. Stay away from it and you will save yourself a lot of grief. AVG all the way
Well must go, the better half is giving me the evil eye as she wants me to get some errands done this evening before we leave for Spokane. So I will cut this off for now. Will be back in touch in a couple of days, "the good Lord willing and the creek don't rise."

Good morning all,
Yesterday went very well, Dorothy and I cooked out. We had steak, campfire potatoes and corn on the cob. Then the neighbors and I sat out on the front lawn and watched the fireworks. In a few more years the trees will be too tall and we will have to walk down to the High School to watch them.
Rob sorry to hear about the ankle, those really hurt. Don't forget to keep it elevated above your heart.
TWhite, you're doing a great job on those mountains. I'll put the final coat of paint on the rolling stock today and work on the reporting marks Sunday. I ran out of white ink for the printer and currently the replacement cartridge is $32. I need to find a new printer that prints in white ink soon. I did suck up the loose ballast last night and I see there are a few minor bare spots.
Fergie, How is the weather up there? I doubt you heard me sing; I can carry over, carry on, carry a gun, but I can't carry a tune.
Friday I washed the welcome mat and had it sitting here in the computer room (in front of the fan) to dry. Came out looking brand new! Now the cat just walked over to it and threw up. Why do I try?
Rob: I know how a bad ankle feels, been there and done that. I too didn't get anything done about it and ended up in leg braces due to weak ankles. I still have to wear them today, almost twenty years later.

Hunter - When we met in January of 2000, you were just a 6 week old pup who walked his way into this heart of mine as the only runt in the litter who would come over to me. And today, I sit here and tell you I am sorry we had to put you down. It was the best thing for you and also the right thing to do. May you now rest in peace and comfort. Love, Dad. 8 June 2010
I love you and miss you Mom. Say hi to everyone up there for me. Rest in peace and comfort. Love, John. 29 March 2017
John, hopefully you get out of there before the August humidity hits!
I just updated my web site with pictures of the ballasted yard, not finished with it but you can see I've made some progress. I've also added a new group of pictures to show off my rolling stock and locomotive power. Only one picture so far of the paint shop progress on restoring some vintage Bachman and Tyco rolling stock. More to come.

I was just down watching one of my neighbor's kids fishing. He caught three catfish in the nine to twelve inch range and four others in the six to eight inch range. He also caught a bunch of snapping turtles, which he threw back. Fishing holds no interest to me personally but I sometimes enjoy watching others doing it.
Morning everyone. Hope you had a good Fourth.
None of us on the block set off fireworks last night, but someone had a HUGE show down the street from us. Right in the middle of the street, so no roofs caught on fire, LOL! It was pretty spectacular, and I KNOW they were the 'illegal' kind--way too showy for 'safe and sane'.
Big Sur is still burning, and now the fire down at Santa Barbara is really roaring--almost 5,000 houses are threatened, according to the news. No Delta Breeze today, and the weather report says that we're headed for the 100-degree mark by the beginning of the week, and probably a return of smoke in the Valley unless the fires to the south get under control.
Speaking of fires, Johnboy--how big are those fires in Saskatchewan? We haven't heard anything of them down here, but I hope they get put out and FAST! Love your comment about turning the Buttes around--but unfortunately, the OTHER side of them is Yuba Pass, and I've got to get to work on THAT one after I finish the other side. Not as much as the Buttes, just a few rock castings here and there. I think in my next life I'm going to model something FLAT like the Texas Panhandle, LOL!
Rob: How goes the ankle? Ice and elevation. And LOTS of Aspirin.
Lee: I always have little 'holes' after I ballast. In fact, some of the ballast on the track at the Buttes just decided to slide off the roadbed while I was out there working. And I wasn't even NEAR it. Stuff is really CONTRARY, isn't it? Though I love working on scenery, I have to admit that ballasting is NOT high on my list of Favorite Things To Do, LOL!
Well, it's supposed to hit the high 90's today outside, so I guess I'll go out and get some work in this morning before it gets too nasty. Got to carve that trail up the face to where the Lookout tower is going to be. Break out the Sculptamold.
Best to all, prayers to those in need.
***Jeffrey, my grandfather wore a brace on one of his legs for an ankle. When he passed on, one of my brothers inherited it for his own. Doesn't bode well for my long term prognosis. One day I would like to have surgery on both ankles, while I'm still potentially healthy enough to heal after the operations. As you can imagine, recovery time is just one of the obstacles.
Wonder where my free trial issue of M.R.Mag (+ free gift) is? Sent in that card some weeks ago, or at least it seems so. Every time we pass the mag in the store, we pass on it, so we don't buy an identical issue. We're going to subsribe after the free issue arrives, just for the access to the "extras" here on this site. Wife & I keep coming up with more ideas for our (mostly hers) layouts. Should be a lot of fun working on them, except for the patience factor, which neither of us have an abundance of.
We already know hers will be a 4' x 8' table. Mine will likely be a shelf layout (so I can drop one section and use that cool old tressel) with a door-table (or half door) at each end. Then I can still "run trains" for guests. Also want some switching opperations for when I have time and energy for something more hands on. Probably a roundhouse at one end as well.
Hope everyone has a great day. Rob
I just stopped by for a RBF, like the ones that Jim makes.
Johnboy, Yes, I am around. The creekbed is on hold. Larry has to finish the span on his trestle before I put the last of the mud down. He has been side tracked with flight simulator. Oh, happy Canada Day.

What about this one?
Good Afternoon All
Still in the fog and still here, funny how the scenery stays the same when you are in it!?!

I sent a friend an e-mail asking that very question and if it is in keeping with the recent release of the CPR 2-10-4 Selkirk then I'm looking at a minimum radius of 30"
Which means I have 2 x 24"180 degree, 2 x 26" 90 degree curves that will have to be widened (basically hand me the recipricating and kleenex dear) Haven't decided if i will widen the board the layout is on or go with a round the wall layout, which means major recongfiguration. Thied option is a 2nd mainline with 30+" radius curves for the heavy engines and passenger traffic. Isuspect I will land up doing a combination of all of the above.
Sorry Engine is heading east and should be at the Ontario / Quebec border by now

Afternoon, Flo. I'll have a root beer float, please, and a chili dog.
Thanks!
They had pretty good fireworks after the singles bbq/dinner last night. Someone had gone to a fireworks place a couple of towns south of us (the place is called "Boomtown" fireworks, if that tells you something) and brought back 3 or 4 of those big box things (about a foot cube, with about 9 tubes mounted inside of them, 3" diameter each or so), plus some sparklers, couple of Roman candles and such. I think those big cube fireworks things gave as good of a show as some cities' displays were (just not as long for total time)! Good show, and no mishaps (except one of the women's 13 year old son wanted to touch a sparkler (briefly, or he would've been on a trip to the ER (about an hour away). Ah, the stupidity of youth...
Tom, if you and your neighbors hooked your hoses together, could you douse those clueless neighbors' fireworks so they couldn't set them off?? Just a thought... Sounds like you're making more progress there on the Buttes, so that's good. On the ballasting, are you 'wet watering' and then using enough white glue when you glue that down?
Rob, you need to take better care of yourself (and find a less strenuous way to get the critters fed somehow). Don't push your body too far - Tom's comment about taking care of yourself, or you'll have to go to the ER!!
Jerry, good to hear that the dialysis place still gets Sallie's treatment in, holiday or not! Twilight Zone marathon, huh? Sounds good to me.
Ryan, I'm sorry I missed the big feed (and your fireworks) yesterday. From the menu, it looked mighty tasty (the food, not the fireworks).
Garry, you are (fire-)cracking me up!
Let's see, Packer#1 - that would be 64 hotdogs in what, 15 minutes tops (even if they took a break between the main round and the playoffs)? That's a lot of dogs!
Fergie, I think you hit the key elements on acquiring new locos/rolling stock: 1) having the , and 2) (very important!) Having the CFO's blessings on the venture. Will you be adding onto the house to make the additional room for all those beauties to fit into? And any MRR projects you've brought along on this cruise? From your last post, looks like you are doing some forestry on this cruise, eh? It doesn't sound like your layout reworking will be fun, no matter how you end up doing it.
Lee, that's a passel of paintin'! No wonder Tom was a bit jealous - I know I couldn't get that many painted in so little a chunk of time! But then again, from what I've seen, scenery always takes more time than any painting does. And good luck, Lee, with finding another printer (sounds like you have one of the Alps printers. I'm not even sure if they're still making them. As for the cat and the Welcome mat...
Johnboy, hope that you get some rain up there to help 'em put those fires out. It does sound strange for you to be having weather in the 80's (F) up there.
JP, good to hear your tour is a brief one. C'mon home and enjoy the humidity here!
I'd better get this posted soon, or I'll be buying the RBF's for everyone.
Blessings on your Saturday,
Jim in Cape Girardeau
