Morning all!
I see we have a new face around here!
Welcome Gav!
All,
So check this out! Last night we had to report my sons pizza sales (fund raiser) to the basketball team coach. So we added it all up, and that kid sold 70 (!) pizzas in a week! I don't know if he sold the most, but that's a TON of pizza! Now we have to go make them Saturday morning and deliver them! Should prove to be interesting!
Oh, and Jim mentioned the "fun" weather..........yeah, I could pass on it truthfully. Well, here's the latest:
It looks like snow will spread into central Indiana early this afternoon. We could get a quick shot of an inch or two by the evening rush hour. Allow extra time if heading out later today. After the initial burst of snow, sleet and freezing rain will mix in during the overnight hours. A winter weather advisory remains in effect tonight through Friday. After getting a quick inch or two of snow, sleet and freezing rain will mix in this evening. I think we could see an additional inch of snow and sleet overnight here in the city with higher amounts north of Indy. The morning commute could be a real mess. At least it should only get up to about the low twenties at the highest......before wind chill. Yeah, it's going to be a party!

I was thinking of reporting that stolen just for entertainment value. You know, report it, then sit back and wait to see what happens.
Good (Icy) Morning, Zoe, Jeff! I see JP was in earlier, and looks like Bill T. got the breakfast buffet up and running for us (and TOP...). I'll have a glass of Ed's OJ, cup of coffee and a buffet plate (or two, or...) Thank you.
Got up this morning, didn't hear on one of the radio stations that we were closed at w**k, so I called in (and found out from the one receptionist that yes, we were open... So I get a late start, scrape off the car windows, swing by BK and get a little something to go, and get to w**k.
Then, as I get out of my car and start walking in, one of our admin. people (who was outside clearing off his car's window again) tells me the place is closing today. So I went in and ate my BK goodies, and went downstairs to the Dr.'s office and got an appointment for a client with our Nurse Practitioner (she'd called yesterday, and I figured I might as well get that done before I headed out).
Not a lot of cars out this morning - I probably saw six or so, plus a couple of police cars making rounds along the way. Much safer when the idiots (did I just say that?) stay off the roads and at home... So I'm back home for now, but may go by our Barnes and Noble if they're open, or by Panera's and get a nice danish for dessert after I finish off my buffet plate here. So watch yourselves out there today, especially the other drivers out there!
JP, I was sort of making the standard joke about how you go looking for a suitable basement for the train layout (which happens to have a house on top of it...). Good that you have a short deployment - you'll be able to get back to MRR'ing/house hunting when you get back.
Oh, Gav, I forgot to mention that we have various nicknames for the scales that you may hear in here, too. Your scale has been referred to as iNvisible or Normal, I model in what's called either Horribly Oversized or House Oriented, RT favors what others call Oversize, and there's also Supersized and Gigantuous scales, too. And that's not even counting the large scale trains like Paul or others get into. We sometimes tease each other, but it's not any worse than brothers or sisters would do. I like Santa Fe also - my layout is a fictional line set in the Four Corners area of the Southwest (near the intersection of Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona) and that gives me an excuse to have interchanges with the ATSF and the D&RGW, plus a fair number of cars from SP and UP and even some WP and NP ones passing through. Mine's set in the mid-to-late 1950's, since I like first gen. diesels as well as steam locos.
Well, enough of my talking - time to eat and then go skating a little. As the sarge on Hill Street Blues would say: "Be careful out there!"
Blessings and safe driving (if you have to),
Jim in Cape Girardeau
pcarrell:Mark found PC's card under the booth seat again! Whew...good thing my TOP was just for a few hours! I was thinking of reporting that stolen just for entertainment value. You know, report it, then sit back and wait to see what happens.
PC, you could just mention to Chloe that your card is 'missing', and she might let Vinnie deal with the offender...
that's a lot of pizzas your boy sold, PC! How long do you have to get them all made and delivered on Saturday? And how big is your vehicle (how many pizza boxes at a time can you fit into it)?
Hey, I'm sorry 'bout the weather, but I didn't choose it - if it were up to me, I'd leave it up north with Johnboy and CN Charlie, where that weather belongs. Hopefully, this one will move through and get melted soon. Meantime, stay warm and inside unless you have to get out.
Good Morning Gang,
Hope you all enjoyed the "Eclipse" or at least were out spooning under it. Oh yeah, that probably would only be Cape Jim.........Batchelor Boy.
To Gavin, This is a great place, sure hope you enjoy your time here as much as I do, and by the constant flow of regulars through here I think they feel the same.
Good Day Zoe, I'll have a western omelette and a glass of Cranberry juice seeing that Ed's OJ shipment is late today.. He is probably out golfing before it gets too hot.
Well it is still very cold here (-23)c but at least the last couple of days have been very sunny, so that helps lift the spirits a bit. And with no snow to shovel it is down right great. Mind you when it gets a little milder I have a lot of snow to rake down off the dutch gable eaves that we have here. But have you noticed the Jet Stream, it normally waves up and down but mainly in an easterly direction. Right now it swoops right up into the high artic and comes straight south through Saskatchewan. Just pouring that cold air on top of us. Sure hope that moves out soon.
I have spent the last couple of days putting together (freelancing) a snow shed for the canyon area. It is coming pretty good. I needed to get it ready as I have the upper canyon hardshelled but need to have this in place to get the terra forming right to support it. You sure don't get the amount of time you would like to have to work on it these days. There always seems to be other things that take a priority. Oh well, its the journey not the destination, I keep telling myself.
I hear that Ryan has been eyeing the WP. California Zephyr menu again, I'm wondering what he'll come up with in the next few days. Hurry Ryan, we are salivating here.
I just won a WP. three level auto carrier off ebay. I had one previously only it was a SF. but when it arrived it had been broken and repaired poorly and when I tried to improve it a lot of the plastic just seemed to crumble. I have not seen a WP. one before and thought i would have to decal it. I know a couple of ramps are missing but I have the ones from before, so that will heal that.
I have to go out to get another angle of styrene that I'm short for this snow shed project, but that will be it for the rest of the day. IT IS TRAIN ROOM TIME.
You all have a great day now, Stay safe , we want you all back, ya hear ??
Johnboy out..................
Look out "Wobbly", here I come.
from Saskatchewan, in the Great White North..
We have met the enemy, and he is us............ (Pogo)

Oooo, thats good!
that's a lot of pizzas your boy sold, PC! How long do you have to get them all made and delivered on Saturday?
Well, the whole team is getting together on Saturday morning at 8am to make all of the pizzas, assembly line fashion, that the whole team sold. We should be done before noon with the making part of it. Then we deliver all afternoon.
And how big is your vehicle (how many pizza boxes at a time can you fit into it)?
This should do it, don't ya think?
Yeah, they can have it! I'll just hang out in front of the fireplace if you don't mind! Just me and my hot cocoa!
Afternoon, Diners! Zoe, how about the Salmon Rotini, please,
and for dessert, a root beer float, please?
pcarrell:This should do it, don't ya think?
PC, that should work, so long as nobody rides with you except your son in the 'shotgun' passenger seat. Probably about fill the rest of it to the back doors...
Colby, we can use the other Diner as a place for the trolls to go... Glad you found the new place before PC ate us all clean to the walls. [just kidding, PC...]
Johnboy, I never thought about having to rake snow until you mentioned it. And who says that you married guys no longer get to go spooning, anyway? Not if you know what's good for you (and it might translate into more permission for LHS trips). Yep, after seeing what your temp up there is, it could be worse than this. Of course, if it were that cold here, we wouldn't be having this freezing rain today - it'd be snow, or else too cold for snow.
I've been out a bit - went by B&N and looked at some cookbooks, trying to find one that covers general tips and basic, simple recipes ("that good ol' Amurican food!" ). I kind of like one Betty Crocker cookbook with 20-minute meals in it. Some of the others (from their ingredients lists) sound like they'd be spicier than I like. Ryan, any suggestions for a good, basic cookbook (for smaller portions too, since I'm single (or later, meals for two would be good...)?
I did find out from one cookbook, that there are physical differences in the tongues of people who are more sensitive to 'hot' foods (we have more taste receptors per area on our tongues than those with average taste, or those for whom nothing is too spicey - who have almost or no receptors on their tongues).
Roads aren't too bad out, and I got almost all of the ice coating off my car through the morning. Now, so long as we don't either get more tonight, or have glassy roads in the morning...
Been enjoying the "Favorite Scenes" topic in the General Discus. forums. Lot of nice pics in there (some of which I happen to have seen posted earlier in the Diner ). Saving several of those for a little inspiration for later.
What's everybody else been doing today?
Blessings and a warm place,

There's a couch in the back that folds down to a bed at the touch of a button. I'm thinkin' that may be the way to go!
Glad you found the new place before PC ate us all clean to the walls. [just kidding, PC...]
HEY! I resemble that remark!

GAV:You'll enjoy the time here!
Went to wally's yesterday. Picked up some stuff in the craft aisle to attempt my first scatch build project.Years back I bought the rural grain elevator from walthers . Liked it alot, but I need about 3 more for the small towns on line. Long story short, built a copy using the for sale sign styrene, some square stock wood and paint for less than $8. It still needs a little work but all I really wanted to see was if I could actually DO it.I'll try to get a pic posted here and you guys can give me some unvarnished tips!!
Also picked up some paint pens, they were perfect for striping US 53.I used the medium yellow and white. It went fast using a ruler!

Yeah, I figured it was better to show that then to take one of it now all covered in snow!
And yeah, the wife is better, thanks for asking. They've scheduled her next surgery on the other leg for next Thursday.
saronaterry wrote: PC: Boy ,your son never ceases to amaze, huh!?
Oh I don't know about that so much. He just doesn't let much slow him down! Keeps me on my toes too!
Yeah, we might have had to arrange for pick-up, as delivery would have been tough!
PC, I don't have your card. Jim got unlucky. I swapped yours and his.
HEADS UP!
JP, Good luck on your trip, I got the phone call 3 weeks ago but I was able to turn it down.
GMT, did you get the Rexall signs?
Phillip, I like the colors on your pizza REA van!
Gav, Welcome aboard
Welcome back and welcome board to all those I missed.
I think trains.com could buy us a box of doughnuts or something when they shut us down so we can get the galley up and running again.

Hey Flip
Mika is my 2 year old daughter we just adopted. She likes Papa's trains, she can tell the difference between diesel and steam all ready. She also has a hand in the cooking/ she sits on the counters and watches Emma(Emily my 15 year old daughter) bake cookies. She is not spoiled mind you.
Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,
Another beautiful day down here in Paradise. I enjoyed it even if it did get up close to 90º today. Definitely a/c time. Someday I need to work on aclimatizing myself.
Speaking of a/c, we decided it was time for a maintenance call for the upstairs unit, before it needs to really work hard. I also felt that it wasn't cooling adequately. The tech came out a bit late this afternoon, and they're still messing with reassembling the unit. So I have been without a/c during the afternoon. I just hope they get it fixed this evening.
Providing access to the a/c unit (at least the air handler inside) required moving the layout, so that means that no progress was made on the layout for a second straight day. Tomorrow for sure.
New thread, huh? It's not a problem for me if Bergie thinks that 150 is the max length of pages. At least they let us restart and maintain this off-topic thread.
Nick: I figure I can just track down a sheet of cork somewhere like at Lowe's and cut it into strips myself. Where would I find such cork?
Gavin - welcome to the Coffee Shop/Diner. Another Normal scaler. Good choice, Lad. Was that iced tea you were wanting?
Ryan: Did you see the full moon this morning; it was spectacular near the horizon this morning just before and after sunrise.
JP - count me among those who didn't realize you were heading off to Iraq. Two months should be doable. Just watch your step.
PC - Good work by your son on the pizza sales. I didn't realize from your earlier posts that you had to make them too. Where are you making them and do you have access to regular pizza ovens?
Johnboy: He is probably out golfing before it gets too hot.
CG Jim: any suggestions for a good, basic cookbook (for smaller portions too, since I'm single (or later, meals for two would be good...)?

Evening Gang:
Welcome Gav and Railroadnut675.
Railroadnut675: So tell us a bit about yourself. What scale, period, freelance prototype, location, etc? We're just a nosy bunch but real friendly. As for topics we talk about everything but politics, religion, and the "s" word. As for myself I'm in HO modeling a freelance ore hauling road in the upper peninsula of Michagan. It's set in the early 1950s and steam with a smattering of first generation diesel. The diesel is mainly on the Milwaukee Road and Chicago & North Western. I also am interested in the Great Lakes and the shipping going on there. I am from Wisconsin, the Milwaukee area. I am now in Texas where my wife and I have a small ranch rasing cattle. I'm retired from Six Flags Over Texas after 30 years as an animations technician. I also have 7 1/2 inch gauge live steam. I'm just nuts about trains.
Enough about me. It's getting close to bed time.
Good Night All
Sorry it's not ice tea Ed. But a nice mug of good old English char. am really enjoying it here I might just have another mug. I do know about the great chilli cook off Pcarrell as I was one of the one's who congratulated you on winning. still like the hat but didn't try the chilli
SORTED
Gav,
Please, it's Ed. The username is just a formality. Do I go around addressing you as Sleeper33?
Ed (who knew all along that you weren't looking for iced tea....)
Evening, Chloe - I'll have a hot fudge brownie sundae
and a cup of coffee, please.

I have the 'wooden' one, but haven't built it yet, so I might be interested in how you did it (pics?). Also, whose brand of pens are you using - Sharpies, or some other one? ('cause that sounds like a simpler way to do centerline stripes to me. ) That's a good idea on making more of the grain elevators. I should probably check at our Wally's for those signs before there's a run on them...

Ed, I'll check those links, but I already have cookbook software and a lot of recipes. What I'm looking for is a (physical) cookbook (call me old school ) with some tips and techniques along with basic recipes that can be varied, or even those where I don't have to start from scratch. I skimmed a couple of Sandra Lee cookbooks (the titles are something like Semi-Homemade...whatever), but her recipes are a little too fancy for my liking. I do like that she starts from available food items that you can get in stores, instead of from scratch. The Betty Crocker cookbook I liked had simpler recipes. Bear in mind, I have a somewhat limited repertoire of dishes I can cook (without having to go to the recipe card/cookbook page). So I'm nowhere near even Ryan's assistant's level. Thanks for the links. Hope they get your A/C done tonight.
to the Diner, railroadnut675! Ed covered the big stuff on the Diner, and he's right about reading a few pages (in this version or in the two earlier ones) will help you get a good sense of what it's like in here. Have a cup/glass of your favorite beverage on me.
I'm hoping the roads over in Illinois are cleared up by Saturday, so I can go by Chuck's Depot and see the place.
I'll be at the table by the wood stove for a bit, warming up and finishing my hot fudge brownie a la mode. Everyone take care or yourselves with the yucky weather out!
Blessings and prayers,
Hello everybody.
We had our model railroad get-together this evening. Outside temps stayed above freezing and so the rain did not freeze. There were three guys who drove over from Hopkinsville, and the three of us out here at the lake. Gus's layout is doing fine. His Proto 2000 IC E8 is still sidelined because so far, the repair parts are on back order. (This engine fell off the layout onto the floor two months ago.) Dan is just starting his layout, and I'm sure it will be a good one.
While getting my layout ready early today, all the gremlins showed up, and it seemed a train would go off the track with out even running. However, with guests here, there were no derailments or any other problems at all. Murphy must have been confused today, I concluded.
I do have a section of the layout with new scenery that includes some rock strata. In a few days I hope to have time because, I would like to share my methods for making rock strata in the forum. I took pictures while in progress. So I'm part way there.
Happy Model Railroading.
