Of course it all evens out, members of "minority" scales or gauges look at themselves as superior, as having found something 'special' that the rest of the hobby missed. IIRC the logo for O Scale News was/is a big "O" wearing a crown with the notation "King of All Gauges" underneath it.

If Jerry Ryan's helping on the layout, count me in! I don't care what scale it is!
As I get older, the scale gets bigger. Hopefully an 0n30 logging layout some day! Tight turns, short trains, steep grades and details I can actually see!

It's NOT TUNA HALF!!
No, indeedy. It's On762!
Or (fillintheblank)762. Or, best of all, 762 followed by mm, with no prefix at all.
The one I liked best (and am planning to incorporate into my twice-N layout once I build out to visible track) hauled cedar logs, not tuna. Not many tuna in the mountains of Central Japan, and those few that are there got there in JNR reefers.
As for scale, I like 'em all - but I model what I already have and can afford. Let's hear it for 1:80.

Well that depends really. Whats the velocity of tuna flung from the claws of Godzilla as he takes down Tokoyo or Osaka. The other possiblity is a rain of fish and a third, which is by far more problematic...which is a tsunami.

To address your concerns (not mine ) in order:
The key is, I'm modeling a real location which I have visited, simulating train consists I've seen, operating to a real timetable which I can hold in my hot little hands. My dream world has no space in it for movie monsters or supremely improbable natural events. If the sushi chef at the local seafood restaurant wants maguro (tuna,) he orders it from the main fish market in Nagoya and it arrives a few hours later behind a JNR 2-8-2. It doesn't fall out of the sky, with or without a parachute [although today (43.3 years after my time), it might be delivered by helicopter.]
Chuck (modeling the reality of Central Japan in September, 1964)
I'm not so concerned about the scale I model, as I am about my mother-in-law referring to my layout as a "choo choo train."

All scales are created equal. Some are just more equal than others. That said I model in H0, N, and Z.

Um, Dave I think your gonna open a can of worms on this subject! But! It does have some just to it, the older people here remember the dark days of "N" scale when it almost vanished. It has takens years for it to recover from those times.
I myself prefer HO, do I dislike N? No I don't. Do I prefer N for me? No I don't. Do I make fun of other N MR's? No I don't. I like my scale because of it size. I do have some N track, cars engines and a few buildings. But! the little buggers just won't work for me because of my large fingers! "N" scale takes a type of person that has better eye site than me also, I can see just fine, its just to small though for me.
I have seen some well built N layouts that captured everything in the scene perfect, these are just as good as any other highly detailed layout big or small. Does N have less products to choose from? Yes they do! So this makes it more difficult for the N modeler to find what he is looking for.
All in all N is just as good as the other scales in my eyes,But! Thats me thoough!
I model in HO, but I will admit I have lusted after N in my heart! :)

This thread does conjure images of trains of all scales joining couplers and humming "We Are the World," and "Kum Ba Yah" while swaying in unison on rocky trackwork.

You're right, Paul, S is the true minority scale. N-scalers don't know what oppression is. Fight the power.

No wonder why the Borg seemed to go out of their way to get her back in the collective!
On a more serious note, I think those who practice 'Scale-ism' are probably not spending enough time with their trains. It's a hobby folks - enjoy it!
I changed from HO to On30 a few years back. most of the flack I get is that I like little tea kettle engines, in both Ho and On30.
Why is it On30? if 3 foot is On3 and 2 foot is On2? I think maybe MRR has it right. On21/2

I am a "straight" HO scaler, though I have to admit that I "experimented" with S scale when I was 10 or 11 years old.
I have friends who are N scalers, but I don't think I would let my daughter date one......
You know, it's the natural order of things. The way God intended.....
Now where did I leave my stripped hat, I have to attend a rally.
We are burning some railroad ties later tonight.

I've seen relapses that aren't pretty. Cutting all of your locos and rolling stock in half with a bandsaw is a good indication that you've hit bottom again.
