Good afternoon everyone!!! Cloudy and 41F here this afternoon, no snow storms in sight for at least the next 7 days. Stpped at HD this morning to pick up 5 gallon bucket of ( blue cover ) redimix plaster for the bathroom project ( practice for MRR the way I look at it )
I wonder if Fergie is OK skiing at Sunday River in Maine, no one had made the TV news here yet, so he is not injured bad or lost yet.....someone did run into a moose, but the description did not fit Fergie.
KEVIN: That is some kind of cold up in Prarie River, Calgary, Regina, etc, I hear it so cold that CN Charlie and Johnboy can't even get the keys of their keyboard to depress, so they can't log on....LOL How is your wood stove and wood supply holding up?
DER JOHN: Isn't it fun doing all that TS with a rats nest of wiring? But look at all you accomplished, you got labels made, found out you need a few more 12V relays ( add that to your shopping list ), cleaned up the shop.....man you were a ball of fire !!!
JIM: Is the checking account back in balance? No apologies from the bank? I had that happen way back in 1967, I had checks bouncing all over the place. I could find no error in my accounting so I went to the bank on my lunchtime and the bank manager checked my account and said that I "must" have made an error, I gave him my check book and said, " here, show me". After an hour and no progress, the light came on and he ran downstairs to their records area. He came back a few minutes later with the answer, they credited the name of the person with the same last letter (J's) just in front of my name. But they would not send letters to the companies that received bounced checks, so I said "are you sure you want to take that stand?" He said yes, we don't do that, so I said, " fine, I am closing my account with your bank, and I will be sure to tell all my friends what great service you render to your customers".
MIKE: At least she didn't do what some "numb brain" did here, she placed a propane tank in her oven. The tank was one of the new ones, so it had a pressure release valve, otherwise the tank would have become a bomb with shrapnel flying in the faces of the firemen.
Ok, time to get back to work,

I think Flip still holds that dubious honor, but I don't think I'm far behind!

Now how about that, only took me three years to find out how Phil/Flip got his nickname! Guess I been too busy in the kitchen....

Every part of my body hurts! I had to do my annual swim test today for the Coast Guard; 500 yards in under 12 minutes, followed by push-ups and sit-ups. This getting old thing is a pain!
Next year I'm going to pay Colby to do my swim test for me!

A quick heads-up for those east of me - Inch, Jerry, Garry, Lee, Philnrunt, Bill T., PC, and the rest of the Midwestern crew - watch out for the storm front! We had 70+ mph winds and a tornado was spotted not far from Cape G. It's heading east, and along a mostly north-south line that's moving mostly eastward. Make sure you have somewhere to get under protective cover, and if you have a weather radio, turn it on and listen! We had hail in some areas here (though fortunately, it missed my car).

Lee, that sounds like a good idea - if you can afford an award-winning swimmer's fees...
Got my Frisco covered hopper (PS, 2893 cu. ft.) in today, and Murphy's law did it again! Same exact number as the one I already had. Oh, well... anyone know of some number decals that match the Athearn ones that I could get? If this was an Accurail, I might have a chance to order from them, but I've never heard of Athearn having decals for renumbering.
Cooled off a bunch on the backside of this front - you folks east of me may need your long johns tonight. That, or at least put a blanket on the bed!
'bout my supper time, so I'll go with the beef special, Ryan.
Blessings and stay warm and safe tonight,

Hi SilverSpike,
Shut off those feeder valves to the outside like you did then open the valves outside and drain the water from the pipes. Sometimes the shutoff valves have a small valve witha cap on it to allow easy purging of the water from the pipe. Once that is done, let em freeze. As long as the pipes are not full of water there will be no issues. As for other pipes, insulate, heat tape and use the drip method in extreme cases.
I see the weather has turned balmy now. Only -29C by the thermometer outside my window.
Hi Dick, It's a frosty one out there for sure...supposed to hit -40C overnight. Makes me wish I didn't have to make the trip into Regina tomorrow...I'm gonna freeze my wheaties! I'm starting to worry about Johnboy and CN Charlie...you might be right about the frozen buttons! Guys aim the little womans hair dryer at the K/B maybe it'll thaw out?
Jeff, The lighting looks awesome!
Hope all you guys are staying safe and warm while the storms rage on. Have a good evening.

Speaking of which, WTHR filmed our meet. My hand was in it, I ran a stopwatch, probably for the intro. Lemmee see if mom has the dunking pics.
SilverSpike: thanks I just got the least of it thankfully. Missed Friday. But slept for 8 hours solid.
Storms rolling through here, pretty nasty. (Waitr. It's January! Why are we having Whirlywind drills???) Had to wait it out a bit in school Should be passing or past PC. Hope he's as fortunate.

Hello out there! Anybody know where it is warm? Ah, I see the diner is still open!
I'd like the blue plate special and a double helping of the peach pie please Chloe! Also something hot to drink or perhaps something that feels hot when it is going down. I hear Ryan has a little stash under the counter.
I haven't been around for a few days and am amazed at all the postings. This is certainly a busy spot which isn't all that surprising considering Ryan's cooking and the very friendly customers.
I agree with Johnboy, enough already with the cold air! Last night and this morning we had blizzard warnings here. There wasn't much snow but the wind was really blowing last night so they closed the main west highway out of the city due to zero visability in blowing snow. The wind chill was only -41C this morning.
Jeff, I know I have previously requested that you stop posting your weather reports. I was only kidding really as it is nice to read them and just pretend that someday it will be like that here, maybe next summer. I look forward to tomorrow's installment. I also like the lighting on your layout. Someday I hope to get to that stage but would be happy to just get my roads done. This Saturday the wife works so the paving crew will be out in force.
Just thought I'd pop in and thaw out in a back booth for awhile.

Evening Gang: I went to see Tony today. I took the train and everything that could go wrong did. I missed the train I wanted by 1min so had to wait 1 ½ hours for the next. Then we got out of the station and to the Trinity River and stopped. There was a grass fire on both sides of the track. We had to wait until the fire department and for the track inspector to get finished. When I got into Dallas I missed the light rail and had to wait another 15 min. On the way back I missed the train by a min again and had to wait another 30 minutes. I finally got home about 6:30pm. From now on I keep a schedule in the truck and one at the computer so I can better plan things. Tony is still hanging in. There isn't much hope but he's at least getting good care.
The weather here started out nice but by 9am the wind had picked up and the temp was dropping. Tonight is supposed to get down to 33F. Tomorrow is supposed to be around 45-50 for a high and not so windy.
The storage container will be coming Friday. They had a bunch of other folks call in to get ones after I told them to hold off.
Lee speaking about fitness, I always tried to get the points before the mile run. I could do the mile in less than 1hour easy but they wanted less than 15 min. Of course my run was mostly walking. They were sadists. I was a helicopter pilot I flew not run.
JimCG: Something like that happened to us once. We had a bunch of checks bounce after we deposited my paycheck. The bank found the deposit stuck in the night deposit chute with a bunch of others. We asked them to write a letter and they didn't so we went to another bank
Well I didn't get to doing any MRRing. I may as well hit the sack.

Good Evening all,

Chip; I never saw the end of the last contest. I had trouble finding the first one and now I can't find the second one. Where do I look ?
Sure hope those January twisters have missed everyone. I think I'll take the cold and pass on the twisters thanks. They have to be a horrible thing to live with when some parts of the country seem to get so many of them.
Spent most of the evening watching some TV with my wife, think I'll spend about 1/2 an hour with the "Wobbly' and then hit the hay.
Colby, That is a great achievement and with your dedication I am sure you will reach your goal.
Hope everyone sleeps well. Keep the fires stoked.

Good Evening Coffee Clubbers,
Another beautiful, if somewhat warm, day down here in Paradise. I think I'll make it without having to turn on the a/c, but it's close. Got up in the mid 80's this afternoon. But I have the windows open and all the fans blowing. It has actually cooled off nicely outside, but the house is still a tad warm for me.
Grocery shopping day today. Squeezed in a very short nap (so short that it almost doesn't count) and went to shoot some pool with my father-in-law in the afternoon.
JR: Not so sure I'd be so sanguine about it all, but whatever works for you is ok with me.
Oh, and I like boiled dinners. But no need to put them on the menu here in the Coffee Shop/Diner, I can make my own here, thanks.
CG Jim: Anyone else notice that today is the 50th anniversary of the Legos blocks?
Oh, and with the talk about Diner/Coffee Shop anniversaries, I went to see when mine was - last November 14th (2007) was my 3rd year, which means there are several others who've been here longer than I have.
Johnboy - Wow, -37ºC? That's a bit nippy, I'd say. Keep that block heater plugged in.
Ryan - I see you decided to join in the Spring Layout Party at TrainBoard. Good for you. Although it doesn't seem to me that you need something like that. You seem to have more than sufficient getup and go to make good progress on the layout.
I'd like to mention that one of Fergie's photos made it into the list of those chosen for "Railfan Photos of the Week" at TrainBoard. You can see the link here:

ED, Just for your information, they had to shut down the whole Syncrude plant at Fort MacMurray, as it was so cold that a lot of the instruments had frozen up and they lost control of some of the units. They believe they will be down for three or four days. That isn't going to help the price of fuel either.
Fergie, Congats on getting your picture posted on the Trainboard. Great shot.
Johnboy out.
Evening folks-not staying long, just a quick coffee before bed.
Mom's still improving-the therapy they've been giving her has been working it's wonders. (I mentioned the thoughts & prayers of all you folks to her also, & that may have helped too!)
Cape Jim-I heard the temp in St.Louis dropped from 70 to about 20 in an hour or so today, & as I write this I'm listening to WSM in Nashville online-it's 50 here but only 37 there-that doesn't happen often! so anyways, preparing for the cold front by putting on my longjohns before bed! We just got put under a severe thunderstorm warning a bit ago, but the line is quite thin & will pass quickly. (I had to bring the garbage cans in the house though so they didn't blow away.)
I better hit it-nite all!

Survived the storms ok here, but the countys south of us had a lot of wind damage. Temps dropped 22 degrees in an hour before the decline slowed, got 7 here now. Today is supposed to be bout 24, sun, with 20 mph W winds.
DICK,, I've seen a film of a welding shop fire and the tanks going off and taking flight or just sailing cross the ground. Wasn't anything could do, but try n stay of off the way of one.

Good morning!
A bit chilly and really windy here in PA. At least i don't need to go anywhere until this afternoon. Maybe I'll work on my layout. I've yet to have an op session, and the track needs cleaned and paperwork prepared. its a Timetable-train Order type RR.
I'll have a Irish coffee and five or six Donuts, angel-cream filled.

Good Morning All,
Just a regular to go and a donut in a bag please. Late night last night sorting out more stuff from under the museum layouts. If a single model railroader can be untidy, imagine a group of six with no mommie to make them clean their messy mess. I'm trying to get all the senic stuff together so we can continue with the N display and start on the O scale. It looked like we'd used the F. L. Ingit system for sorting.

J.R. Imagine having dozens of "piggies" poking through the scenery stuff.... Now I tell anyone doing certain projects to keep the supplies they need in their own cart of box and hide it somewhere.
So a reg coffee and I'm off, have a nice day.

Good morning, Diners! Zoe, a cup of the Tim Horton in a go cup, please. Thank you.
Well, the storms (which I, ahem, did not send along to the rest of you...) have moved through, and it's 16 F here today. Yesterday afternoon, only half hour or so until leaving w**k time, they had all of us go downstairs to a meeting room (interior lower level room, no windows, our usual place for nasty weather drills). Except in this case, it was the 70+ mph winds, not a drill. So I grabbed my bag and coat, so I could leave once it was done (well, it was really too early once the storm passed us). Had the car windows fogged up from the temperature drop.
Then it was windy most of last night, and when I got back home after dinner and my class at church, the power was off in our whole side of the block. I asked the next door neighbor, and he said it'd been off about a half hour. Found some candles for a little light, but couldn't get online to notify you all here. Oh, did I mention our apartment building is all-electric (including heat)? So after brushing my teeth by candlelight, I put out the candles, went to bed (leaving the bedroom light on, so I'd know about when the power came back on). It was about 9 p.m. or so when I went to bed, and I woke up around 10:30 with the lights on. Got up long enough to set the alarm clock, and went back to bed. This morning, reset the microwave's clock, and turned on the VCR and TV - so it would re-scan for the broadcast stations. I'll set the clock on the VCR and the stereo later. Need to find some bigger candles this week, for better light the next go-round.
I'm thankful that with the hail around this area and the wind, that I didn't get any damage on the car. Hope everyone else made it through the storm okay. I just ducked and sent the heads-up on to those of you likely in its path.
Oh, for those who asked, still no word from my bank yet. I did deposit a check on Monday, but they have a hold on that (out of town check), so I'm still in the hole for the bank. I will be talking with the bank once they get me the credit back, if they don't also credit me back all of *their* charges against my account for the loan agency's snafu. And likely changing my account elsewhere. I'm hoping the drive-up teller (who let me get some cash when I deposited the check) didn't get in trouble for letting me have some cash out of the check. I've been thinking about, well, y'know, sort of.., asking her if we can meet for coffee/tea/soda some Saturday afternoon. She is nice on the eyes, appears to be the appropriate age, and no rings on either hand. We'll see, anyway.
Better get myself ready for the 'w' thing this morning. See everyone later!
Blessings and a safe and warm day,
Good morning everyone.
Loss power this morning around 4am. Temp inside the house is down to 60F, came to work late but will need to leave early to check on the house, maybe run the stove a while.
Darn near got my ____ kicked last night. Was working on a City Classic building and went out to the garage to find suitable material for a loading dock. Out of the corner of my eye I saw (what I thought was) the local stray cat wander in the garage. I found what I needed (I have a sheet of plywood across 2 saw horses in the middle of the garage) and started tapping the plywood and saw horses to chase the cat out, well it wasn't a cat!!!! A 34-40 pound raccoon stood up from under the plywood and told me he was displeased with my stick banging and unpleasant language. The raccoon departed at his own pace and I'm no worse for wear other than a few more grey hairs.
RT, there are a few Federal Jobs opening up in Cleveland, OH if you're interested, one in my office after I leave.
Paul, I hear you loud and clear. I can run 1.5 miles but I would have to do it in under 14:29. I ask you; how many Coast Guard boats have you seen over 400 feet???

Congrats Fergie!
The idea of asking the Electronic Engineer from NASA friend of mine to help with animated semaphores and detection blocks hit a minor snag. His plan involves using a 20MHz CPU board for detection and activation of the block signals. Parts alone would cost $500 for each block. So we are going to hash something out on the phone since he mentioned if I wasn't up to the challenge we could work out a simple analog detector and motor for $5 each block.
